CHARGER VOLLEYBALL

THE COACHES ROBIN SALTERS HEAD COACH

A former setter for the Chargers and a 1991 graduate of the University, Robin Salters continues to uphold the proud winning tradition of New Haven volleyball started by her former head coach and program founder, Deborah Chin. Since taking the helm in 1994 as only the second head coach in program history, Salters has posted a 586-163 record and .782 winning percentage.

Individually, Salters guided setter Kaulana Ane to AVCA All-America Honorable Meniotion honors, while Ane was joined by Kristen Lee and Kristy Atufunwa on the AVCA All-East Region First Team. In addition to those honors, four Chargers were named to the NCAA East Region All-Championship team; Ane, Lee, Atufunwa and Kea-marie Olaso, with the same four also earning All-Northeast 10 laurels.

She became head coach at her alma mater in 1994 after serving as an assistant coach at Central Connecticut State University in 1993. Previously, she coached the Junior Olympics team for the Western Michigan Volleyball Association. While earning her Master’s degree at Western Michigan University, she also coached the Kalamazoo Central High School freshman team. A former student-athlete at Lake Michigan College where she earned an associate of arts degree, Salters transferred to UNH in 1989 and was the starting setter in 1989 and 1990. During her playing career at UNH, she earned All-Region honors and was named the school’s Female Athlete of the Year for the 1990-91 academic year. Salters concluded her career by winning the University’s NCAA Woman of the Year Award in 1991. An active member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), Salters has served as the chair of the Northeast Regional selection committee, was a member of the Division II Head Coaches’ Committee and a voter for the organization’s weekly Top-25 poll. Robin has also served for 12 years as a member of the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee, including eight years as chair. In 2009 she served as the national chair of the NCAA Division II Women’s Volleyball Selection Committee. In 2009, Salters was also inducted into the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame.

2015 OUTLOOK

Salters continued to lead the New Haven women’s volleyball program to national prominence in 2014 as the Chargers advanced to the NCAA Elite 8 for the ninth time under her leadership and the 13th time in the history of the program. After leading the Chargers to a 24-9 overall record and an upset of Bridgeport in the NCAA East Regional finals, Salters was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) East Region Coach of the Year for the seventh time in her career (1996, 1996, 2002, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2015).

Salters opened her coaching career by taking UNH to the NCAA postseason in 10 straight seasons from 1994 to 2003, including six berths in the NCAA Elite Eight and six conference championships. Salters guided UNH to the Elite Eight in her first four seasons and five of her first six.

2015 PLAYERS

Salters’ 586 victories following the 2014 season is the most ever in school history as she passed former coach and current Director of Athletics Debbie Chin as the all-time winningest coach. Her 586 career victoryes rank her 26th all-time in Division II coaching wins and 11th among active coaches. Her success is even more outstanding in terms of winning percentage, where her .782 mark against Division II competition is 11th all-time among coaches with 10 or more years at the Division II level.

THE UNIVERSITY

She posted a record of 576-178 (.764) as coach and at the time of her retirement her winning percentage was ranked among the top five all-time. She led the Chargers to 10 NCAA Division II tournaments (and three AIAW tournaments), and New Haven was ranked in the top five four times. Chin’s teams won 30 or more matches 12 times, including six straight years. Six times she was named Northeast Region Coach of the Year, and eight times she was named New England College Conference Coach of the Year. In 10 of her final 11 seasons, Chin led the Chargers to at least the Sweet Sixteen, including four trips to the Elite Eight.

HISTORY & RECORDS

Deborah Chin, who is currently the Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics at UNH, is the program’s founder and was the Chargers’ head coach for the first 19 seasons. During that time, she fashioned herself a Hall of Fame career - literally. Chin was a member of the fourth class to enter the AVCA Hall of Fame, the sport’s highest honor, in December of 2006.

They have a son and three daughters. Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. Irv Glovin was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and film form (he was associate producer of the film), and is President of the Oskar Schindler Humanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the Foundation. Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan grew up in Southwest Germany. She holds the equivalent of an American M.A. in Secondary Education and taught at a German high school. She is a ceramics artist and taught German and pottery as an adjunct faculty member in Colorado and Virginia.

Dr. Kaplan is the author of a book on American translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke; a book on Tim O’Brien’s fiction, published by the University of South Carolina Press; and an anthology of international war stories, published by the University Press of Colorado.

2015 OUTLOOK

President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. After a five-year hiatus, the Charger football team returned to the gridiron in 2009, and have since won three conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY Higher education has lasting importance on an individual’s future success. For this reason, the emphasis for the student-athlete experience at the University of New Haven is a comprehensive program of learning and development in a personal setting. As an NCAA Division II program, our approach provides growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and development of positive societal attitudes in service to community. The balance and integration of these different areas of learning opportunity provide our student-athletes a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead. The University of New Haven seeks to provide the world with leaders who can make a positive difference in a global society. Studentathletes are afforded unique opportunities for leadership because of the visibility provided through athletics competition. UNH’s intercollegiate program provides opportunities for its student-athletes to develop moral virtues, such as courage, self-confidence, and integrity and to learn communication and teamwork skills associated with outstanding leadership. Thus the Department of Athletics helps the University satisfy its primary aspiration, which is to prepare students to lead purposeful and fulfilling lives in a global society through experiential, collaborative, and discovery-based learning. The Department of Athletics is committed to delivering intercollegiate athletics programs that are consistent with the University’s mission and generates the trust and support of its various constituencies. The goal of the department is to field sports teams that compete successfully against other NCAA Division II teams while upholding the academic standards of the University of New Haven. The department is also committed to conducting its programs in strict adherence to the policies, rules and regulations set by the University’s administration, Board of Governors, the NCAA and the Northeast-10 Conference. Through its programs, the department gives its student-athletes of different genders, races, religions, national origins and sexual orientation opportunities to participate in intercollegiate competition. The intercollegiate program will function free of discrimination with a University commitment to the adherence to Title IX and the Office of Civil Rights guidelines. A major goal of the Department of Athletics is to help student-athletes realize the full potential of their athletic abilities while also increasing their intellectual capabilities and providing them a meaningful opportunity to earn a baccalaureate degree. The department will not compromise its commitment to educate and graduate its student-athletes. Department of Athletics personnel are expected to represent the University in a manner consistent with UNH’s principles and values. All personnel are expected to perform their responsibilities with the highest standards of integrity, ethical behavior and sportsmanship at all times. Coaches and staff are expected to treat student-athletes fairly and with respect and to facilitate leadership that helps them mature physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987, becoming the first team from the Northeast Region to win the title. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger athletics history. Shannon Gagne won an unmatched five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship meet - the highest finish in program history. • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 twenty times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight thirteen times. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 33 Regional appearances, including their most recent run in 2013. • Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies and First Round Draft Pick Cameron Drew. • The football program has appeared in six NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. At the time, the titlegame appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. Most recently, the football program has appeared in the NCAA tournament in both 2011 and 2012. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation. • Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA finals in 1976 as has appeared in three Final Fours. • Women’s Lacrosse has appeared in the NCAA regional championship three times, most recently in 2015.
