Pupavac, the tallest Charger on the roster standing six-foot-eight, played for the Geelong Supercats in the Victorian Youth League where he averaged 12.8 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game this past season.

New Haven closed out the 2014-15 season as one of the nation’s premier defensive teams, ranking 11th in Division II with 62.7 points per game allowed, while it was among the top-10 in the country in fewest personal fouls committed per game, 15.3. Individually, Eric Anderson earned All-America distinction for the second-straight season after leading the nation in rebounding at 13.1 per game, while also leading the Chargers in scoring at 16.7 points per game.

Joining Pupavac in the incoming class is Ben Vezele (Providence, R.I.), Najee Larcher (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Tyler Reynolds (Syracuse, N.Y.). Larcher will enter his rookie season after earning All-Brooklyn First Team accolades last year, averaging 12.9 points per game as a senior. Reynolds is coming off of a pair of Class-B First Team All-State honors, helping lead Westhill High School to a pair of state championships.

FRONTCOURT In the frontcourt, Hotaling is tasked with replacing the large presence of Anderson. Looking to make the biggest impact on that loss are the two returning senior’s on the squad, Samir McDaniels and Joshua Guddemi. McDaniels returns after starting every game last season, averaging 5.6 points and 4.5 rebounds. He also added 20 steals, third most on the team and 30 assists. Guddemi appeared in every game last season, starting in four, averaging 14.5 minutes per game. For the season, the native of Nottingham, England averaged 1.1 points and 1.7 rebounds per game. In addition to McDaniels and Guddemi, four new faces will battle for positioning in the frontcourt for the Blue and Gold,

Vezele rounds out the newcomers in the front court, entering New Haven after a season at Wilbraham and Monson Academy last year. The year prior to that, Vezele earned All-State recognition after averaging 19 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and 2.5 blocks per game at Hope High School. BACKCOURT In the backcourt, the Chargers return a pair of key threats in Jemal Mosley and Tommy Hunt who each started every game. The biggest loss in the Chargers backcourt is Cyrus James who started 20 games and shot the ball at an impressive 60 percent clip. Mosley is the leading returning scorer for Hotaling’s squad after finishing his sophomore season averaging 14.8 points. The leading three point threat on the team, Mosley finished

Hunt returns as the second leading outside threat with all but six of his 49 field goals from outside the three point arc. For the season, Hunt averaged 5.7 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. Joining Hunt and Mosley in the returning guard rotation will be sophomores Jayson Cethoute, Levy Gillespie and Joseph Doganiero. Gillespie played in every game in his rookie campaign, averaging 4.7 points per game, while dishing out 58 assists. Cethoute averaged 1.2 points over 20 games while Doganiero appeared in one game.

The month of December opens with a rivalry game for New Haven as it hosts Southern Connecticut State in a doubleheader with the women’s team on Dec. 2. One additional conference test comes on the road at Pace (Dec. 5) before returning to non-conference with four-straight match-ups to close out the 2015 portion of the schedule.

The Chargers first non-conference tests will come on Thanksgiving weekend, both on the road. The first comes against a member of the East Coast Conference, the Dowling Golden Lions on Friday, Nov. 27. That match-up in Oakdale, N.Y.

For the second-straight season, the Chargers will open their regular season schedule with three-straight NE-10 contests. First on the docket will be a trip to Syracuse, N.Y. for a date with the Le Moyne Dolphins on Wednesday, Nov. 18. The home opener for New Haven will come four days later when Saint Rose visits West Haven (Nov. 21), while the final of the first three conference games is a trip to Adelphi on Nov. 24.

The top-five teams each in the Northeast and Southwest divisions of the Northeast-10 advance to the 2016 Northeast-10 Conference Championship with first round action slated for Feb. 26. The 2016 Champion will be crowned on Saturday, Mar. 5, with all games in all rounds to be played at the highest seeded team’s home court.

HISTORY & RECORDS

Not included among the regular season schedule is a preseason exhibition match-up against 2014 NCAA Division I National Champion, UConn. The Chargers will travel north on Interstate 91 to meet the fellow Nutmeg State team on Saturday, November 7 at the XL Center. Tip off in that game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

New Haven closes the regular season with six games in the month of February, four of which are slated to be played in the friendly confines of Charger Gymnasium. All six games in February come as the second half of home-and-home matchups with AIC (Feb. 3), Saint Rose (Feb. 6), Adelphi (Feb. 13), Southern Connecticut State (Feb. 17), Pace (Feb. 20) and Le Moyne (Feb. 23).

2014-15 REVIEW

SCHEDULE This year’s 26-game schedule features eight contests against teams that qualified for NCAA postseason play in 2014-15, including the top seeds from last season’s East region, fellow Northeast-10 Conference member and 2015 NE-10 Champion, American International.

2015-16 OUTLOOK

The lone newcomer in the backcourt for the Chargers will be Andy Fleurantin who was named to the All-Area team following his junior and senior seasons at West Orange High School in West Orange, N.J.

The first three tests come against CACC competition as all three take place away from West Haven with visits to Concordia (Dec. 9), Georgian Court (Dec. 18) and Post (Dec. 20). The non-league slate ends as the Blue and Gold close out 2015 at Charger Gym on December 30 with a visit from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s (PSAC) East Stroudsburg University. Last season, the Warriors finished first in the East Division of the PSAC. New Haven doesn’t waste time after the New Year rolls over to re-open its conference play with the first of two meetings against American International College (Jan. 2) who, last season, was one of five NE-10 teams that advanced to the NCAA tournament. The month of January is the busiest for the squad with nine games scheduled, four of which will take place at Charger Gym. In addition to AIC three other league teams who participated in the NCAA postseason are included in the month of January, with Saint Anselm rounding out the month on Jan. 30.

2015-16 PLAYERS

Making his first appearance on the hardwood for the Chargers will be sophomore Michael Bourke who missed the 2014-15 season due to a preseason injury. Prior to that, Bourke led the Hun School with 13.4 points per game and also topped the squad in assists and steals, helping lead the Raiders to a 2014 MAPL Tournament semifinal appearance.

2015-16 COACHES

with 78 of his 140 baskets from outside the 20-foot, 9-inch arc. He also led New Haven with 22 steals and was second on the squad with 67 assists.

UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University President

Since becoming president of the University of New Haven in 2004, Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D. has led the University of New Haven through a period of remarkable growth and development. In the past seven years alone, enrollment has grown by 42 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students, who hail from 35 states and some 45 countries. Full-time undergraduate enrollment has grown by 86 percent and applications have increased by 176 percent. During this time, the University has completed over $110 million in construction projects and has launched 17 new academic programs. UNH now ranks among the top comprehensive universities in the North and boasts nationally ranked programs in a number of majors across business, criminal justice, engineering, forensic science, and the liberal arts and sciences. In recognition of his contributions to transforming the University, Dr. Kaplan was named “Businessman of the Year” by Business New Haven magazine in 2008. President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. The award recognizes President Kaplan’s efforts to make UNH a national leader in experiential education, requiring every undergraduate student to complete an internship, an academic service learning experience, international study or a faculty-mentored research project before graduation.

Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report. Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies. Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University. In addition to earning his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Dr. Kaplan holds a Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German and English) from Eberhard-Karls Universität and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

He also has written a number of scholarly essays. Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to more than 30 countries during their 35 years together, including Tanzania, where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters. Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. Irv Glovin was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and film form (he was associate producer of the film), and is President of the Oskar Schindler Humanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the Foundation. Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan grew up in Southwest Germany. She holds the equivalent of an American M.A. in Secondary Education and taught at a German high school. She is a ceramics artist and taught German and pottery as an adjunct faculty member in Colorado and Virginia.

Dr. Kaplan is the author of a book on American translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke; a book on Tim O’Brien’s fiction, published by the University of South Carolina Press; and an anthology of international war stories, published by the University Press of Colorado.

Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation Deborah Chin became the University of New Haven’s fourth Director of Athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 16 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair of the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008 and currently serves as Chair of the NCAA Division II Membership Committee. She was promoted to Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation in 2010. UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament over 75 times in 20-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of state-of-the-art blue and gold synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. During the previous two years, the Chargers have seen great accomplishments on the playing field and in the classroom. In each of the previous two athletic seasons, at least 14-of16 teams advanced to the postseason and the New Haven student-athletes have boasted over a 3.10 cumulative grade point average. In 2007, Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic

aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. After a five-year hiatus, the Charger football team returned to the gridiron in 2009, and have since won three conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

Fame resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame (Inducted October, 1998), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (April, 1999), and the Athletics Hall of Fame at her alma mater, SUNYCortland.

A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979.

In a 19-year career (1975-93) as head coach for the Chargers, she posted a 578-179 record (.764) and was at that time only the fifth Division II coach to win 500 career matches. The Chargers made 10 trips to the NCAA tournament during Chin’s reign, reaching the top five four times. Her awards include six AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year distinctions as well as eight New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. Chin coached the Chargers to twelve 30-win seasons, including six straight. She is also recognized internationally as a top volleyball clinician.

Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 1998-99 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award. In 2010, she was honored as an Elm City Legend, an event which recognizes the greater New Haven region’s best in sports and community dedication. As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a Hall of

As an administrator, Chin has served on over 30 national and regional committees. In addition to her current position as Chair of the NCAA Division II Membership Committee, her resume includes terms as Chair of the NCAA Division II Management Council (2008), chairperson for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Committee (1988-92), the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee (1997-2001), the NCAA Northeast Regional Football Committee (1999-2003), and the NACDA John McLendon Minority Scholarship Committee (1999-present). She also served four years on the NACWAA Board of Directors (1993-96), and acted as the Volleyball Commissioner for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games held in New Haven. A graduate of SUNY-Cortland with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education, Chin earned her Master’s of Science degree in Physical Education from UNC-Greensboro.

Shannon Gagne won an unmatched five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship meet - the highest finish in program history. • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 twenty times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight thirteen times. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 33 Regional appearances, including their most recent run in 2013. • Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies and First Round Draft Pick Cameron Drew. • The football program has appeared in six NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997.
