The 2015-16 season marks the 40th year of women’s athletics at the University of New Haven. Throughout the year, the Chargers will pay tribute to the women whose pioneering efforts laid the foundation for athletics to become an integral part of a woman’s experience at New Haven. The proud tradition of Charger women’s athletics dates back to the 1975-76 academic year with the Chargers fielding women’s basketball, softball and women’s tennis programs. In the fall of 1976, volleyball was added to the mix while Cross Country and Track and Field followed shortly thereafter. Women’s soccer was the next program to be added in 1993, while women’s lacrosse was added in 2001.

HISTORY & RECORDS

Following its back-to-back trips to the NCAA Championship and its first Elite Eight appearance since 1989, the University of New Haven women’s basketball team has some big shoes to fill following the graduation of five senior starters. The cupboard isn’t bare, however, as the 2015-16 team returns several key players and brings seven new players into the fold for first year Head Coach LaTonya Watson. The Chargers look to exceed expectations this season after being picked fifth in the Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division in the preseason coaches’ poll. ON THE PERIMETER Leading the way for New Haven is senior guard Briana Bradford, who earned Northeast-10 Honorable Mention accolades for the second straight season in 2014-15. Bradford has averaged 12.3 points per game throughout her career and eclipsed the 1,000 point mark with her first basket against Franklin Pierce in the NCAA East Region semifinals. Her place in the women’s basketball team’s memory was forever cemented when she came up with a steal and layup for the winning basket against Stonehill with four seconds left, sending the Chargers to the Elite Eight.

against Dominican. Quana Smith is back for a second season with the Blue and Gold after playing in 25 games a year ago. She scored a career-high seven points against Pace a week before posting a personal-best seven rebounds against Dowling. Also returning to the backcourt is Sade King. A transfer from Division I Hampton University, King appeared in all but one game for New Haven a year ago, averaging 2.5 points per contest. She delivered a season-high nine points on two occasions and will be counted on for her leadership on the court. Among the newcomers, Alexandria Kerr is expected to make an impact for the Chargers. She was a Second Team All-State performer at Montclair High School in Montclair, N. J. in addition to earning First Team All-County and All-Conference accolades. Several other newcomers are expected to vie for minutes in Coach Watson’s rotation. Sianna Van Dyke comes to New Haven from Kingston High School in New York where she won the Section 9 Championship and was a BCANY All-Star as a junior. The Blue and Gold also welcomes Allieyah Cubbage from North Plainfield, N.J. Rounding out the perimeter are Aliyah Christy from nearby Stratford, Conn. and Oluwaseun Shittu from Johnston, R.I.

IN THE POST The post will be led by India Dotson who appeared in 30 of 32 games for the team, starting three of them. The Monmouth transfer had a key five-game stretch in January that displayed her potential, scoring in double figures twice while averaging 7.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.

THE SCHEDULE First-year head coach LaTonya Watson announced a 26-game slate for the 2015-16 University of New Haven women’s basketball team. Included in the Chargers schedule are 13 home contests in the friendly confines of Charger Gym.

2014-15 REVIEW

Following a non-conference game against Dowling on Nov. 15, the Chargers jump into Northeast-10 Conference play with games at Le Moyne on Nov. 18, against Saint Rose on Nov. 21 and at Adelphi on Nov. 24. The Saturday after Thanksgiving, they are back in action with two games in a row at home, taking on CACC opponent Goldey-Beacom on Nov. 28 before a rivalry showdown with cross-town foe Southern Connecticut State on Dec. 2.

The top-five teams each in the Northeast and Southwest divisions of the Northeast-10 advance to the 2016 Northeast-10 Conference Championship with first round action slated for Feb. 26. The 2016 Champion will be crowned on Saturday, Mar. 5, with all games in all rounds to be played at the highest seeded team’s home court.

2015-16 OUTLOOK

New Haven opens the season at home on Friday, Nov. 13 with a non-conference matchup against Bloomsburg out of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The Huskies finished last season 26-5 and advanced to the Atlantic Region Championship Final before seeing their season end to eventual National Champion, California (Pa.).

The Blue and Gold return to West Haven to play five of their final seven games, beginning with home matchups with Saint Anselm on Jan. 30 and AIC on Feb. 3. It will head out on the road for a Feb. 6 game at Saint Rose prior to playing Adelphi at home on Feb. 13. The final away tilt of the season is a short trip as the Chargers head to cross-town rival Southern Connecticut State on Feb. 17. The remaining two games on the regular season schedule take place at Charger Gym against Pace on Feb. 20 and Le Moyne on Feb. 23.

2015-16 PLAYERS

Two newcomers combine with the post returnees as Katia Oge and Nyanna Slaughter join the team. Oge was a BCWCA All-County Team member as a senior at Immaculate Heart Academy who delivered the winning basket in the NJSIAA State Girls Basketball Championship.

The Chargers enter cross-divisional play starting with a pair of home games, taking on Merrimack on Jan. 6 with the Chargers’ Fourth Annual Class at the Court event. Bentley follows, coming to West Haven on Jan. 9. Four of the next five contests are on the road as games at Stonehill on Jan. 12 and Assumption on Jan. 16 as well as contests at Southern New Hampshire on Jan. 23 and Saint Michael’s on Jan. 26 sandwich a Jan. 20 date at Charger Gym against Franklin Pierce.

2015-16 COACHES

Khayla Trowell also comes back for her sophomore year. Her best game for New Haven arguably came at the most critical time of the season when she scored her first career basket, pulled in a rebound and had a crucial block that led to a layup, giving the Chargers the lead in the NCAA East Region Championship game against Stonehill.

A Saturday, Dec. 5 game against Pace is the last NE-10 contest for nearly a month as 2015 rounds out with a date against ECC foe Saint Thomas Aquinas on Dec. 18 before New Haven heads out for its longest road trip of the season, playing three games in a row away from West Haven. On Dec. 20, the team travels to CACC opponent Georgian Court before having 11 days off prior to a trip to New Hampshire to take on Saint Anselm in a nonconference tilt on New Year’s Eve. The Chargers conclude the road swing and return to Northeast-10 play on Saturday, Jan. 2 at American International.

UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University President

Since becoming president of the University of New Haven in 2004, Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D. has led the University of New Haven through a period of remarkable growth and development. In the past seven years alone, enrollment has grown by 42 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students, who hail from 35 states and some 45 countries. Full-time undergraduate enrollment has grown by 86 percent and applications have increased by 176 percent. During this time, the University has completed over $110 million in construction projects and has launched 17 new academic programs. UNH now ranks among the top comprehensive universities in the North and boasts nationally ranked programs in a number of majors across business, criminal justice, engineering, forensic science, and the liberal arts and sciences. In recognition of his contributions to transforming the University, Dr. Kaplan was named “Businessman of the Year” by Business New Haven magazine in 2008. President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. The award recognizes President Kaplan’s efforts to make UNH a national leader in experiential education, requiring every undergraduate student to complete an internship, an academic service learning experience,

international study or a faculty-mentored research project before graduation. Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report. Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies.

translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke; a book on Tim O’Brien’s fiction, published by the University of South Carolina Press; and an anthology of international war stories, published by the University Press of Colorado. He also has written a number of scholarly essays. Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to more than 30 countries during their 35 years together, including Tanzania, where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters.

Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University.

Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. Irv Glovin was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and film form (he was associate producer of the film), and is President of the Oskar Schindler Humanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the Foundation.

In addition to earning his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Dr. Kaplan holds a Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German and English) from Eberhard-Karls Universität and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan grew up in Southwest Germany. She holds the equivalent of an American M.A. in Secondary Education and taught at a German high school. She is a ceramics artist and taught German and pottery as an adjunct faculty member in Colorado and Virginia.

Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation Deborah Chin became the University of New Haven’s fourth Director of Athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 16 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair of the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008 and currently serves as Chair of the NCAA Division II Membership Committee. She was promoted to Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation in 2010. UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament over 75 times in 20-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of stateof-the-art blue and gold synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. During the previous two years, the Chargers have seen great accomplishments on the playing field and in the classroom. In each of the previous two athletic seasons, at least 14-of-16 teams advanced to the postseason and the New Haven student-athletes have boasted over a 3.10 cumulative grade point average. In 2007, Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were

accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. After a five-year hiatus, the Charger football team returned to the gridiron in 2009, and have since won three conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

Hall of Fame resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame (Inducted October, 1998), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (April, 1999), and the Athletics Hall of Fame at her alma mater, SUNY-Cortland.

A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979.

In a 19-year career (1975-93) as head coach for the Chargers, she posted a 578-179 record (.764) and was at that time only the fifth Division II coach to win 500 career matches. The Chargers made 10 trips to the NCAA tournament during Chin’s reign, reaching the top five four times. Her awards include six AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year distinctions as well as eight New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. Chin coached the Chargers to twelve 30-win seasons, including six straight. She is also recognized internationally as a top volleyball clinician.

Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 199899 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award. In 2010, she was honored as an Elm City Legend, an event which recognizes the greater New Haven region’s best in sports and community dedication. As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a

As an administrator, Chin has served on over 30 national and regional committees. In addition to her current position as Chair of the NCAA Division II Membership Committee, her resume includes terms as Chair of the NCAA Division II Management Council (2008), chairperson for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Committee (1988-92), the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee (1997-2001), the NCAA Northeast Regional Football Committee (1999-2003), and the NACDA John McLendon Minority Scholarship Committee (1999-present). She also served four years on the NACWAA Board of Directors (1993-96), and acted as the Volleyball Commissioner for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games held in New Haven. A graduate of SUNY-Cortland with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education, Chin earned her Master’s of Science degree in Physical Education from UNC-Greensboro.

The department will provide growth opportunities to achieve in a nationally competitive intercollegiate program that attracts, nurtures and graduates student-athletes who under the guidance of a quality staff, represent the University of New Haven with character and integrity while achieving academic excellence, serving the community and pursuing excellence in their respective sports. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY Higher education has lasting importance on an individual’s future success. For this reason, the emphasis for the student-athlete experience at the University of New Haven is a comprehensive program of learning and development in a personal setting. As an NCAA Division II program, our approach provides growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and development of positive societal attitudes in service to community. The balance and integration of these different areas of learning opportunity provide our student-athletes a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead. The University of New Haven seeks to provide the world with leaders who can make a positive difference in a global society. Studentathletes are afforded unique opportunities for leadership because of the visibility provided through athletics competition. UNH’s intercollegiate program provides opportunities for its student-athletes to develop moral virtues, such as courage, self-confidence, and integrity and to learn communication and teamwork skills associated with outstanding leadership. Thus the Department of Athletics helps the University satisfy its primary aspiration, which is to prepare students to lead purposeful and fulfilling lives in a global society through experiential, collaborative, and discovery-based learning. The Department of Athletics is committed to delivering intercollegiate athletics programs that are consistent with the University’s mission and generates the trust and support of its various constituencies. The goal of the department is to field sports teams that compete successfully against other NCAA Division II teams while upholding the academic standards of the University of New Haven. The department is also committed to conducting its programs in strict adherence to the policies, rules and regulations set by the University’s administration, Board of Governors, the NCAA and the Northeast-10 Conference. Through its programs, the department gives its student-athletes of different genders, races, religions, national origins and sexual orientation opportunities to participate in intercollegiate competition. The intercollegiate program will function free of discrimination with a University commitment to the adherence to Title IX and the Office of Civil Rights guidelines. A major goal of the Department of Athletics is to help student-athletes realize the full potential of their athletic abilities while also increasing their intellectual capabilities and providing them a meaningful opportunity to earn a baccalaureate degree. The department will not compromise its commitment to educate and graduate its student-athletes. Department of Athletics personnel are expected to represent the University in a manner consistent with UNH’s principles and values. All personnel are expected to perform their responsibilities with the highest standards of integrity, ethical behavior and sportsmanship at all times. Coaches and staff are expected to treat student-athletes fairly and with respect and to facilitate leadership that helps them mature physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987, becoming the first team from the Northeast Region to win the title. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger athletics history. Shannon Gagne won an unmatched five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship meet - the highest finish in program history. • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 twenty times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight thirteen times. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 33 Regional appearances, including their most recent run in 2013. • Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies and First Round Draft Pick Cameron Drew. • The football program has appeared in six NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. At the time, the titlegame appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. Most recently, the football program has appeared in the NCAA tournament in both 2011 and 2012. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation. • Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA finals in 1976 as has appeared in three Final Fours. • Women’s Lacrosse has appeared in the NCAA regional championship three times, most recently in 2015.
