THE COACHES JEN STAREK HEAD COACH NINTH SEASON SPRINGFIELD ‘01
Jen Starek enters her ninth season as head coach of the Chargers’ softball program in 2015. The winningest coach in program history, Starek has been at the helm for the club’s most successful season as a part of New Haven’s first-ever string of four consecutive trips to NCAA postseason from 2008-11. The 2014 season marked Starek’s second Northeast-10 Coach of the Year honor as the Chargers won the NE-10 Southwest Division regular-season title for the first time since divisional play began in 2013. The Chargers came one win shy of recording Starek’s second back-to-back 30-win season at 29-18 overall. With an 18-8 conference slate, New Haven hosted the conference championship, but fell to eventual champion Southern New Hampshire. The Chargers also earned the fourth seed in the NCAA East Region Championship and hosted the tournament on campus. The appearance was the sixth in a seven year stretch. Three players earned All-Region Second Team honors by Daktronics. In 2013, Starek produced the Chargers’ seventh-straight winning season – a stretch that began when she took over the program in 2007. The team finished 38-15 and reached both the Northeast-10 and NCAA Regional championship games. New Haven earned its first NFCA national ranking (No. 24) since landing at No. 21 in the 2011 preseason poll. Starek also guided the program’s first-ever NFCA All-America First Team selection, Christina Gelardi, to Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year laurels. Gelardi led the nation with a .649 on-base percentage. Pitcher Micah Stonesifer and first baseman Jess Spivey alos collected All-Region accolades in 2013.
Earlier in her New Haven career, Starek guided the Chargers to the 2009 Division II East Region Championship final and an underdog run to the 2008 East Region final that included wins in four consecutive elimination games. Starek took over the Chargers’ program in 2007 and led the team to a 26-19 record – an eight-win improvement from the previous campaign. Prior to her arrival at New Haven, Starek spent two years as head softball and field hockey coach at Simmons College in Boston. The Sharks’ 2006 softball team won the Colleges of the Fenway Tournament and scored an opening-round win in the Great Northeast Atlantic Conference (GNAC) Playoffs. The team posted a 19-19 record overall, including wins in seven of the team’s last nine games, to improve upon a 17-22 mark from 2005. She was also the co-head coach of Pressure Softball’s 16U Team during 2005 and 2006. Previously, Starek has been head softball coach, assistant athletic director and an adjunct professor of sports management at Mount Ida College (2003-04). She was an assistant softball coach at her alma mater, Springfield College, from 2001-03. In 2003, the Pride went 33-12 overall to register its second-highest win total in a 17-year span.
The Chargers finished 29-19 in 2012 and earned the seventh seed in the Northeast-10 Championship, going on to knock off second Adelphi and advance to the championship weekend tournament. Starek mentored Shannon Angehr to First Team All-NE-10 and Second Team NFCA All-East Region laurels in the outfield.
Starek graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in athletic training from Springfield College in 2001, and earned an MS in athletic administration in 2003.
In 2011, New Haven advanced to the Northeast-10 Championship as the fourth seed and was one of three teams left standing on the tournament’s final day of action. The Chargers also claimed the seventh seed in the NCAA East Region Championship, marking the club’s fourth-straight NCAA postseason trip. After concluding the season with a 34-19 overall record, Chelsea Harold and Christina Gelardi both earned NFCA All-America honors and were two of the four Chargers to claim All-Northeast-10 recognition.
Starek was a standout softball and field hockey player at Springfield. As a catcher and outfielder in softball, she was twice a NEWMAC First Team All-Conference selection (2000, 2001), NFCA All-New England Second Team (2001), and NEISCA Division III second team All-Star (1999). The Pride won their first-ever NEWMAC Tournament in 2000, advancing to the NCAA Tournament with a 30-17-1 record. The following season as a senior, Starek led Springfield to a 41-10 record, their highest win total in at least 17 years.
The 2010 campaign was a landmark season for the Chargers. Starek claimed Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year honors after guiding New Haven to its first NE-10 Regular Season Championship. Despite being upset at the NE-10 Championship, the Chargers’ regular season résumé merited the top seed in the NCAA Division II East Region Championship. New Haven swept the competition at the regional before dropping the Super Regional to Molloy in the deciding game of a best-of-three series. The Chargers won a program-record 42 games and made the longest NCAA postseason run in program history, finishing the spring ranked No. 16 in the NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll.
Starek led the Pride field hockey team to NEWMAC titles 1998, 1999 and 2000. They advanced to the national championship game in 2000, her final season. She is an NATA certified athletic trainer and an NSCA certified strength and conditioning coach.
The 2010 season also marked the end of arguably one of the best four-year
4
careers in New Haven softball history. Breanne Gleason was a two-time All-America honoree and only the second player in Northeast-10 history to earn Pitcher and Player of the Year in the same season (2010). She was also the 20th NCAA Division II pitcher to record 1,000 career strikeouts and the 22nd to register 100 wins. Gleason was a four-time All-Region selection, a two-time First Team All-NE-10 honoree and recorded the most recent perfect game in New Haven history – a 3-0 win over Dowling on March 17, 2010.
New Haven’s all-time wins leader on the softball diamond at 260-139 (also her Division II head coaching record), Starek is 303-201 (.601) overall in ten seasons as a collegiate head coach. Starek is a native of Holliston, Mass., and currently resides in West Haven, Conn.

After making its sixth NCAA Division II East Region Championship appearance in the last seven years, the University of New Haven is eyeing its 11th national postseason bid in program history. The Chargers won the Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division Regular Season Championship and hosted the East Region Championship a year ago. Ninth-year head coach Jen Starek will look to guide a Charger squad which features five returning starters, seven returning letterwinners and eight newcomers this season.
King enters her third season with the Chargers and looks to continue her All-Conference numbers from a year ago. She started 27 games and boasted a 15-9 record in the circle. The Front Royal, Va. native’s 2.23 ERA and 153 strikeouts were the best of her career and she moved herself into the top 10 all-time at UNH with 287 career strikeouts. She threw a no-hitter against Southern Connecticut State on March 25, 2014 and struck out double-digit batters on four occasions.
The program’s all-time leader in wins, Starek was named the NE-10 Coach of the Year and recorded her 300-career victory as a head coach last year, while third baseman Lindsey Couturier concluded a prolific career at New Haven as the all-time leader in RBI (157) and assists (444). The Chargers will also need to fill the hole left at first base by three-year starter Jess Spivey who will not see action during her senior season after discovering an injury in the offseason.
The two juniors will be joined on the rubber by Moravian (Pa.) transfer Carsin Conner who has two years of eligibility remaining. The Howell, N.J. native boasted a 1.69 ERA and a 7-2 record in 14 appearances with the Division III Greyhounds last season. She was second on the team with 37 strikeouts, while adding one complete game shutout.
PITCHING With both starters back from last season and the addition of a transfer, the Chargers 2015 pitching staff will be one of the most experienced in the nation this season. Juniors Nicole King and Victoria Cabral were both selected to the NE-10 All-Conference Third Team and recorded 14-plus wins. Cabral, also an All-East Region Second Team honoree, posted a 14-9 record with 20 starts and a team-best 1.25 ERA. She held opponents to a .189 batting average and tossed seven shutouts and 17 complete games. Cabral threw a nearly-perfect game with one hit, eight strikeouts and no walks against Franklin Pierce on April 6, 2014.
The staff will also include a trio of freshman – Cassie Griglock, Alyssa Monteverde and Heather Ferranti. All three will look to supply the Chargers with much needed depth out of the bullpen. Griglock and Monteverde were both All-Conference honorees during their high school careers, while Ferranti helped lead the Amity softball team to the Class LL State Championship as a sophomore. INFIELD Without Couturier at the hot corner for the first time in four years, the Chargers will feature a young but experienced infield this year. Julie Devlin and Gabby DeLeo will return as seasoned sophomores in 2015. A NE-10 All-Rookie Team honoree last year, Devlin started all 47 games at shortstop and posted a .208 batting average. Her rookie campaign included six home runs, 15 RBI and 26 runs scored. Second baseman, DeLeo also started all 47 games a year

Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation
32
Deborah Chin became the school’s fourth Director of Athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 16 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008 and was promoted to Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation in 2010. UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament over 50 times in 17-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of stateof-the-art blue and gold synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. In 2007, Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. After a five-year hiatus, the Charger football team returned to the gridiron in 2009, and won three-straight conference championships and
made a pair of NCAA appearances. A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979. Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 199899 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award. In 2010, she was honored as an Elm City Legend, an event which recognizes the greater New Haven region’s best in sports and community dedication. As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a Hall of Fame resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall
of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame (Inducted October, 1998), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (April, 1999), and the Athletics Hall of Fame at her alma mater, SUNY-Cortland. In a 19-year career (1975-93) as head coach for the Chargers, she posted a 578-179 record (.764) and was at that time only the fifth Division II coach to win 500 career matches. The Chargers made 10 trips to the NCAA tournament during Chin’s reign, reaching the top five four times. Her awards include six AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year distinctions as well as eight New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. Chin coached the Chargers to twelve 30-win seasons, including six straight. She is also recognized internationally as a top volleyball clinician. As an administrator, Chin has served on over 30 national and regional committees. In addition to her most recent position as Chair of the Division II Management Council, her resume includes terms as chairperson for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Committee (1988-92), the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee (1997-2001), the NCAA Northeast Regional Football Committee (1999-2003), and the NACDA John McLendon Minority Scholarship Committee (1999-present). She served four years on the NACWAA Board of Directors (1993-96), and acted as the Volleyball Commissioner for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games held in New Haven. A graduate of SUNY-Cortland with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education, Chin earned her Master’s of Science degree in Physical Education from UNC-Greensboro.

NCAA Division II presidents and chancellors affirm that athletics events should reflect the values of higher education and the mission of each institution. Division II emphasizes learning and development in a personal setting. As chancellors and presidents, we are concerned about the uncivil behavior exhibited at college athletics contests and thereby pledge to work together to make respectful, familyfriendly events a standard of the Division II experience.

DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY Higher education has lasting importance on an individual’s future success. As an NCAA Division II program, our approach provides growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and development of positive societal attitudes in service to community. The balance and integration of these different areas of learning opportunity provide our student-athletes a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead. The University of New Haven seeks to provide the world with leaders who can make a positive difference in a global society. Studentathletes are afforded unique opportunities for leadership because of the visibility provided through athletics competition. UNH’s intercollegiate program provides opportunities for its student-athletes to develop moral virtues, such as courage, self-confidence, and integrity and to learn communication and teamwork skills associated with outstanding leadership. Thus the Department of Athletics helps the University satisfy its primary aspiration, which is to prepare students to lead purposeful and fulfilling lives in a global society through experiential, collaborative, and discovery-based learning. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987, becoming the first team from the Northeast Region to win the title. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger athletics history. Shannon Gagne won an unmatched five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship meet - the highest finish in program history. • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 twenty times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight twelve times. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 33 Regional appearances, including their most recent run in 2013. • Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies and First Round Draft Pick Cameron Drew. • The football program has appeared in six NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. At the time, the titlegame appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. Most recently, the football program has appeared in the NCAA tournament in both 2011 and 2012. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation. • Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA finals in 1976 as has appeared in three Final Fours.
