THE COACHES JEN FALLON

HEAD COACH NINTH SEASON SACRED HEART ‘96

Jen Fallon, the 2008 Inside Lacrosse Division II National Coach of the Year, enters her ninth season as the head coach of New Haven women’s lacrosse in the spring of 2015. The longest-tenured coach in program history, Fallon is the Chargers’ all-time leader with 95 career wins and a .655 winning percentage (95-50). Entering the season, she ranks ninth among active Division II coaches by winning percentage and 10th by number of wins. She’ll become the ninth active coach with 100 career victories with five victories this spring. Behind Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year honors for Fallon, the 2014 campaign tied a program-record for wins (16) and set a new record with an 11-1 NE-10 slate. The Chargers played the ninth toughest schedule in Division II and the second toughest in the NE-10 with eight games against teams ranked in the top 15. New Haven earned its highest-ever national ranking at No. 4 - a position it held for five-straight weeks starting on April 7. UNH finished the year with its highest ever national ranking at No. 6. Junior midfielder Kathryn Campbell became the program’s third All-America First Team selection and was New Haven’s first NE-10 Midfielder of the Year honoree. Brittany Ast and Nicole McKee were All-America Second Team selections as well - making 2014 one of the most decorated years in Charger history. The three joined seven others who received postseason awards from the conference. The Chargers’ postseason run began with their second appearance in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship Game and finished in their second NCAA Division II quarterfinal apperance. Playing one of the toughest schedules in the nation in 2013, the Chargers finished with a record of 12-7 and climbed as high as No. 8 in the national rankings. Rachel Resnick and Natalie Lieberman were both named Second Team All-America by the IWLCA, with Resnick garnering Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year honors. In total, five New Haven student-athletes claimed year-end accolades. All seven of New Haven’s losses came against nationallyranked competition, and the Chargers also won two contests against ranked opponents en route to an NE-10 postseason win and trip to the conference semifinals. In 2012, Fallon guided the Chargers to a 13-5 record and a national ranking as high as No. 6 from the IWLCA. The season included a victory over No. 3 and eventual national champion C.W. Post as one of New Haven’s four triumphs over nationally-ranked opponents. Ashley Ferrandiz, Aubrey Duncan and Alexis Gabbe all earned IWLCA All-America status and headed a list of six Chargers to earn All-Northeast-10 laurels. Fallon was recognized by her peers as the conference’s Coach of the Year for the second time in four seasons as a member of the NE-10.

Fallon previously earned NE-10 Coach of the Year laurels in 2009 – New Haven’s first season as a member of the prestigious Division II conference. In that campaign, the Chargers won the Northeast-10 Conference Championship to garner the program’s first-ever NCAA Championship berth. Fallon’s 2009 club finished at 16-4 with a 9-1 NE-10 record – setting the program record for wins and conference wins in a season and starting the streak of four consecutive trips to the Northeast-10 Championship that remains active through 2012. She guided New Haven to seven wins in 2010 and notched a winning season in 2011 with a 10-8 tally. The 2008 campaign saw Fallon named the Inside Lacrosse Division II National Coach of the Year in her second season at the helm after leading the Chargers to the program’s first-ever winning campaign with a then-program-record 14 victories and just three losses. Fallon, who was also named the East Coast Conference Coach of the Year, mentored Brigid Brady ’09 to the program’s first Division II All-America honor following her third-consecutive 50-goal season. Fallon took over the Chargers’ program in 2007 and, in her first spring at New Haven, matched the program record with seven victories. Before coming to New Haven, Fallon served as the head girls’ lacrosse coach and physical education teacher at Greens Farms Academy in Westport, Conn., with additional duties in the areas of policy & curriculum and athletic game management. Fallon started her coaching career at her alma mater in 1997 as Sacred Heart University’s head women’s soccer coach from 19972000. Fallon also served as the school’s assistant compliance coordinator for two years while coaching. As a collegiate lacrosse player, Fallon was a three-time Division II AllAmerica selection (1994-96) and is Sacred Heart’s all-time scoring leader with 264 career points. She scored 212 career goals with 52 assists and, in her All-America seasons, posted three of the school’s top-four single-season point totals. She is 20th on the Division II national career scoring list, and is ninth all-time in goals scored. A native of Milford, Conn., Fallon earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Sacred Heart in 1996. She is a member of the U.S. Lacrosse Association, the CGSCA and NSCAA, and is CPR and AED certified. She currently resides in Fairfield, Conn.

The Chargers went 11-1 in conference play to earn the second seed in the conference championship. UNH defeated four nationallyranked opponents during the season, including No. 4 Le Moyne. After making their way to the NE-10 Championship game against Adelphi, the Chargers earned their second at-large bid to the NCAA postseason. The Blue and Gold finished the season ranked No. 6 in the IWLCA Division II Coaches’ Poll, tying the program’s highest ranking in the final poll.

2015 PREVIEW

ATTACK Now in their junior year, Courtney Ackland and Maya Szymanski will anchor a large group of returners on the offensive end. The two will see an increased role with the graduation of All-American Nicole McKee in the offseason. The team’s third leading scorer last spring, Ackland started 18 games and scored 58 points with 30 goals and 28 assists. Szymanski started 19 games a year ago and finished sixth on the team with 28 points off 16 goals and 12 assists. The Framingham, Mass. native added 21 ground balls and 11 draw controls. Senior co-captain Ashley Travis will be a big contributor on the offensive end this season as well. Her role will expand this spring after playing in 14 games a season ago. She scored three goals and handed out one assist as one of the Chargers’ top reserves in 2014. Sophomore lefty Caitlin O’Brien will see more time this year after

30

playing in 17 games last year and demonstrating her versatility around the net. She finished her rookie campaign with six goals and two assists, while picking up six ground balls. Junior Devon Previte will add to an experienced group of attackers for UNH. She tallied four points with a goal and three assists last year. Sophomore Lindsay Lare scored a pair of goals last year and will provide depth to the attack, while newcomer Jessica Mazliah will look to make an impact as a freshman. She comes to UNH after earning All-Division selection four years at Sachem North High School in the lacrosse hotbed of Long Island. MIDFIELD Back for her final season in the Blue and Gold, senior co-captain Kathryn Campbell will lead the midfield. An IWLCA All-America First Team selection last year, the Mansfield, Mass. native scored a program-record 102 points and moved into fourth all-time at UNH with 218 career points. She started all 20 games and recorded one of the best stat lines in program history – 56 goals (sixth), 46 assists (first), 88 draw controls (first), 54 ground balls (sixth) and 33 caused turnovers (seventh). She’ll again take a majority of the team’s draws after posting a program-record 88 draw controls as a junior. Junior Corinne Fisher stepped into a starting position last year and excelled, ranking fourth on the team with 36 points. She was an All-Region selection and started all 20 games in the midfield. The Jackson, N.J. native recorded 28 goals, eight assists, 41 ground balls and 20 draw controls. After making an immediate impact as a freshman, Nicole Belanger will look to increase her role in her second season. The UNH Female Rookie of the Year and a Northeast-10 Conference All-Rookie Team selection, appeared in 18 games and finished seventh on the team

with 26 points off 21 goals and five assists. She also grabbed 26 ground balls, 23 draw controls and 10 caused turnovers in her first year.

GOALKEEPER Much like the previous two seasons, New Haven’s goalkeeper position has been tightly contested between juniors Alyssa Gianotti and Marissa McDermott. The two will likely split time once again this season with the possibility of changing depending on the opponents.

Senior Brittany Ast was named a Player to Watch by Inside Lacrosse this preseason and was an IWLCA All-America Second Team selection last spring. An All-Conference First Team selection she started 19 games last year and ranked third on the team with 40 ground balls last year. A force in transition, Ast will use her speed to move the ball from the defensive end to the attacking end.

Gianotti started 14 games a year ago and totaled over 720 minutes between the pipes. She recorded an 11-2 record, 84 saves and a 7.75 goals against average. The Monkton, Md. Native was twice named the NE-10 Goalkeeper of the Week and was a member of the NE-10 Academic All-Conference Team.

An NE-10 All-Conference Second Team honoree, Clyne started all 20 games on defense last season. She recorded seven ground balls and five caused turnovers. The final senior on the back line is Daina Catanese who will see more time in her final season. She appeared in 13 games with one start last year, while recording four ground balls, four caused turnovers and two draw controls.

McDermott started five games, but combined for 467 minutes in 13 total appearances in goal. She tallied a 5-2 record with 58 saves and a 10.15 goals against average.

2014 REVIEW

Sophomores Meredith Michel and Hannah Johnson both started all 20 games last season. Michel scored a goal and handed out one assist, while grabbing 27 ground balls, 13 caused turnovers and nine draw controls. Johnson tallied 28 grounds balls, 12 caused turnovers and 10 draw controls.

2014 2015 OUTLOOK

DEFENSE With the return of all four starters on the back line, the Chargers’ defense will be the most experienced on the field. The defense, which ranked 17th in Division II with an 8.70 goals against average in 2014, features three senior co-captains and a pair of sophomores who started as rookies.

2015 PLAYERS

Freshmen Nicole Martin will look to make an immediate impact after playing her scholastic career at Delran High School in New Jersey. She was a team captain and was also a member of the Bears’ soccer and cross country teams.

Freshmen Courtney Duffy and Alex Zapatka hope to make an immediate impact as well. Duffy comes to UNH after a scholastic career in Merrimack, N.H. She was named an All-State honorable mention honoree and captained her team to the 2012 state championship. Zapatka was also an All-State selection in Connecticut at Newington. She was the Indians’ team captain and a member of the basketball, cross country, indoor track and soccer teams.

2015 COACHES

Junior Alicia Busco will add depth to the midfield after seeing a start and action in 11 games last year. She total eight points off four goals and four assists in her sophomore campaign.

Juniors Christina Luca and Maria Troisi along with sophomore Alicia Mortali will primarily come off the bench on the defensive end. The three combined for 17 appearances last season, including six games played by both Troisi and Mortali.

UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University President

Since becoming president of the University of New Haven in 2004, Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D. has led the University of New Haven through a period of remarkable growth and development. In the past seven years alone, enrollment has grown by 42 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students, who hail from 35 states and some 45 countries. Full-time undergraduate enrollment has grown by 86 percent and applications have increased by 176 percent. During this time, the University has completed over $110 million in construction projects and has launched 17 new academic programs. UNH now ranks among the top comprehensive universities in the North and boasts nationally ranked programs in a number of majors across business, criminal justice, engineering, forensic science, and the liberal arts and sciences. In recognition of his contributions to transforming the University, Dr. Kaplan was named “Businessman of the Year” by Business New Haven magazine in 2008. President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. The award recognizes President Kaplan’s efforts to make UNH a national leader in experiential education, requiring every undergraduate student to complete an internship, an academic service learning experience, international study or a faculty-mentored research

project before graduation. Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report. Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation

42

Deborah Chin became the school’s fourth Director of Athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 16 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008 and was promoted to Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation in 2010. UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament over 50 times in 17-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of stateof-the-art blue and gold synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. In 2007, Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. After a five-year hiatus, the Charger football team returned to the gridiron in 2009, and won three-straight conference championships and

made a pair of NCAA appearances. A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979. Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 199899 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award. In 2010, she was honored as an Elm City Legend, an event which recognizes the greater New Haven region’s best in sports and community dedication. As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a Hall of Fame resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall

of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame (Inducted October, 1998), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (April, 1999), and the Athletics Hall of Fame at her alma mater, SUNY-Cortland. In a 19-year career (1975-93) as head coach for the Chargers, she posted a 578-179 record (.764) and was at that time only the fifth Division II coach to win 500 career matches. The Chargers made 10 trips to the NCAA tournament during Chin’s reign, reaching the top five four times. Her awards include six AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year distinctions as well as eight New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. Chin coached the Chargers to twelve 30-win seasons, including six straight. She is also recognized internationally as a top volleyball clinician. As an administrator, Chin has served on over 30 national and regional committees. In addition to her most recent position as Chair of the Division II Management Council, her resume includes terms as chairperson for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Committee (1988-92), the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee (1997-2001), the NCAA Northeast Regional Football Committee (1999-2003), and the NACDA John McLendon Minority Scholarship Committee (1999-present). She served four years on the NACWAA Board of Directors (1993-96), and acted as the Volleyball Commissioner for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games held in New Haven. A graduate of SUNY-Cortland with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education, Chin earned her Master’s of Science degree in Physical Education from UNC-Greensboro.

DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987, becoming the first team from the Northeast Region to win the title. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger athletics history. Shannon Gagne won an unmatched five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship meet - the highest finish in program history. • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 twenty times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight twelve times. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 33 Regional appearances, including their most recent run in 2013. • Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies and First Round Draft Pick Cameron Drew. • The football program has appeared in six NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. At the time, the titlegame appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. Most recently, the football program has appeared in the NCAA tournament in both 2011 and 2012. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation. • Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA finals in 1976 as has appeared in three Final Fours.
