CHARGER SOCCER
The University of New Haven women’s soccer team enters 2015 in a much different position than it was in a year ago. This edition of the Chargers looks to replace one of the top players in program history, but will do so with a strong returning corps and a highly touted group of newcomers as the team looks to make a return to the Northeast-10 Conference Championship.
Goalkeepers Both Natasha Purchla and Deandra Nash return between the pipes for 2015. Purchla went 4-6-1 with a 1.88 goals last season against average after coming back from an injury. Purchla is one of the more accomplished keepers in program history, entering the season ranked third all-time at New Haven with a 1.34 goals against average, fourth in wins (20) and fifth in saves (221) and shutouts (8). After a redshirt season in 2013, Nash posted a 1-2-0 record with a team best 1.50 GAA in 2014. Boston-area native Kyra Wolonsavich joins the program for 2015. As a senior at Beverly High School, she was named an All-Star by the Boston Globe, Salem News and the Northeastern Conference while helping to lead the Panthers to the NEC Championship.
HISTORY & RECORDS
Schedule The Chargers are slated to play nine games at Kayo Field in 2015. They will open competition with non-conference home matches against Georgian Court (Sept. 3) and 2014 NCAA Regional Finalist Mercy (Sept. 5). After a road contest at Dowling (Sept. 9), New Haven opens Northeast-10 Conference competition at home against Le Moyne (Sept. 12). The NE-10 schedule dominates the remainder of the matches with only a break on Oct. 20 to play Queens (N.Y.) in a non-conference tilt.
2014 REVIEW
Midfield The midfield looks to be a key point of strength for New Haven entering the 2015 season. The trio of senior Ashley Dawson and juniors Sierra Stein and Shannon Enright each accumulated more than 1,000 minutes of field time last season. Dawson is the most experienced of the group, starting 35 of 36 matches in the last two seasons. Stein started all 17 contests a year ago and tied for second on the team with three goals scored in 2014. Enright earned a starting spot near the beginning of October and did not disappoint, delivering a goal and an assist in a 2-1 win against Merrimack.
A lot of talent, but not a lot of experience follows the three starting backs as junior Cassidy Haigh and sophomores Danielle Matassa and Lauren Low all return with another year in the system under their belt. Freshman Annie White joins the fold in 2015 and will look to earn minutes after earning All-State accolades at Pearl River High School in Rockland County, N.Y.
2015 OUTLOOK
The Chargers will look to get contributions from newcomers Josette Breeden and Marisa Pacapelli. Breeden comes to West Haven following a stellar career at Vanden High School in Vacaville, Calif. where she led the Vikings in goals and assists in each of her four seasons. She was named All-Solano County Athletic Conference in each of her four seasons as well, garnering First Team honors as a junior and senior, Second Team accolades as a sophomore and Honorable Mention recognition as a freshman. The trip was much shorter for Pacapelli, who comes from West Haven High School. She was a Class LL All-State performer as a junior and senior for the Blue Devils. Freshman Sarah Bosco will also join the team in 2015, but will sit out the season with a medical redshirt.
Defense The back line is solid for New Haven, as it returns junior Carly Schecht and senior Miranda Smith. The duo led the team in minutes last season with 1,562 and 1,484 respectively. Also rejoining the defense is senior Taylor Szyarto who appeared in 15 games, starting 13 of them a season ago.
2015 PLAYERS
Forwards Two-time Northeast-10 Conference Third Team and two-time All-new England performer Marisa Garcia leads the Chargers up front. She is coming off a season where she scored three goals and four assists to total 10 points. Her 13 career assists rank 10th on the New Haven all-time career list. Joining Garcia at the top is junior Danielle Widmann who tallied the game-winner against NYIT to open last season and sophomore Erica Silhan. Nicole Caruso also returns for New Haven and will look to provide depth at the forward position.
Adding depth to the midfield is freshman Emily Morello who was an Academic All-American at Kings Park High School on Long Island.
2015 COACHES
Laura Duncan returns for her sixth season at the helm of the Chargers. She has led the squad to four winning seasons in her previous five years and holds an overall record of 46-37-8 with the Blue and Gold.
Joining Dawson, Stein and Enright is senior Kelly Blank and sophomores Kelly Quigley, Allison Morgan and Rachel Dempsey. All four appeared in at least 14 matches a year ago and helped the attack with Dempsey scoring both goals in a victory against Bentley.

Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University President
Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies. Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University. In addition to earning his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Dr. Kaplan holds a Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German and English) from Eberhard-Karls Universität and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.
Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to more than 30 countries during their 35 years together, including Tanzania, where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters. Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. Irv Glovin was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and film form (he was associate producer of the film), and is President of the Oskar Schindler Humanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the Foundation. Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan grew up in Southwest Germany. She holds the equivalent of an American M.A. in Secondary Education and taught at a German high school. She is a ceramics artist and taught German and pottery as an adjunct faculty member in Colorado and Virginia.
2015 OUTLOOK

DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987, becoming the first team from the Northeast Region to win the title. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger athletics history. Shannon Gagne won an unmatched five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship meet - the highest finish in program history. • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 twenty times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight thirteen times. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 33 Regional appearances, including their most recent run in 2013. • Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies and First Round Draft Pick Cameron Drew. • The football program has appeared in six NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. At the time, the titlegame appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. Most recently, the football program has appeared in the NCAA tournament in both 2011 and 2012. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation. • Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA finals in 1976 as has appeared in three Final Fours. • Women’s Lacrosse has appeared in the NCAA regional championship three times, most recently in 2015.
