Stahl-Sells figures prominently in the school’s pitching record book, as she is seventh in career wins with 37, fifth in career earned run average at 1.83, ninth in career appearances with 64 and 11th in career innings pitched with 390 1/3. Her UNH career culminated with her selection as the University’s Female Athlete of the Year in 1987. After wrapping up her playing career, she served her alma mater as an assistant basketball coach for two seasons from 1988-1990.
As a freshman, Whalen wasted no time making an impact on the volleyball and softball teams. She helped lead the UNH volleyball team to the program’s first ever NCAA tournament. On the field, Whalen played in all 34 games, while making 21 appearances on the mound. She boasted a team-best 2.02 earned run average and six wins. Whalen also led the team with 96 assists during her freshman campaign. During the 1984-85 sports season, Whalen once again helped lead the volleyball team to the NCAA’s and the Elite Eight. She recorded 172 kills, 119 blocks and 233 digs during her sophomore volleyball season. After a run for the NCAA volleyball title, Whalen hit the softball field and recorded another stellar season at second base and on the hill. She posted five saves and five shutout appearances from the mound, while ranking second on the team with 15 RBI’s. Whalen’s junior season would prove to be one of her most successful on the volleyball court. As the team captain, she led the squad with 249 kills and 224 digs. She was named to the All-Conference First Team and helped lead the Chargers to their second-straight NCAA Elite Eight appearance. Whalen also enjoyed a successful season on the diamond. She played in 38 games, primarily at second base, and batted .252 with 14 RBI’s and 24 runs. She was named to the All-New England Collegiate Conference First Team at second base.
HISTORY & RECORDS
In an era when volleyball statistics were rarely kept, Whalen totaled 421 kills and 457 digs in her final two seasons on the court. Originally from Cheshire, Conn., Whalen was also inducted into the Connecticut Softball Hall of Fame in 2004. Her career softball statistics rank her second all time at UNH with 338 assists and tenth all time with 77 runs scored.
2014 REVIEW
Success followed Whalen during her senior season as she made a transition from the volleyball court to the tennis court. Her fall season concluded as she won the New England Collegiate Conference Singles Championship. Another record-setting softball season ensued as the team captain boasted a career-high .287 batting average and 24 runs. Whalen also earned her second-straight All-New England Collegiate Conference honors as a senior, while also earning All-ECAC honors.

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF WOMEN’S ATHLETICS AT NEW HAVEN
Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University President
President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. The award recognizes President Kaplan’s efforts to make UNH a national leader in experiential education, requiring every undergraduate student to complete an internship, an academic service learning experience, international study or a faculty-mentored research
Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report. Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987, becoming the first team from the Northeast Region to win the title. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger athletics history. Shannon Gagne won an unmatched five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship meet - the highest finish in program history. • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 twenty times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight thirteen times. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 33 Regional appearances, including their most recent run in 2013. • Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies and First Round Draft Pick Cameron Drew. • The football program has appeared in six NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. At the time, the titlegame appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. Most recently, the football program has appeared in the NCAA tournament in both 2011 and 2012. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation. • Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA finals in 1976 as has appeared in three Final Fours. • Women’s Lacrosse has appeared in the NCAA regional championship three times, most recently in 2015.
