That season, Hotaling’s Chargers led the NE-10 and ranked 10th nationally in fewest turnovers committed per game (11.0) and slotted at 13th in the country in scoring defense with an NE10-leading 61.1 points per game allowed. New Haven also finished second in the conference and 38th in Division II in free throw percentage (74.3). Individually, Hotaling mentored 2012-13 Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year Eric Anderson, who finished second in the nation with 18 double-doubles while ranking third with 12.0 rebounds per game and ninth in blocked shots at 2.45 per game. In 2012-13, Hotaling mentored the Chargers to a 20-9 record – their first 20-win campaign since 2003-04. New Haven reached the NCAA postseason for the first time since 2004 and earned its first win on the national stage since 2003 with a victory over Dominican in the NCAA Division II East Region Quarterfinals.
THE HOTALING FILE
HISTORY & RECORDS
Statistically, Anderson led NCAA Division II in rebounds per game (13.1) and defensive rebounds per game (9.85). He was also among the top-10 in the nation in double doubles (8th) and total rebounds (5th).
Individually, Hotaling mentored Anderson to NE10 Defensive Player of the Year and All-America Honorable mention recognition - the first such mention for UNH in 24 years. Anderson finished his junior season leading the Northeast-10 Conference and ranked second in Division II in defensive rebounds per game (8.97). He also ranked third in the nation with 20 doubledoubles. Anderson was joined by Jeffery Adkins and Justin Exum and two-time All-Northeast-10 honorees.
2015-16 REVIEW
Hotaling’s 2014-15 Chargers finished the season with a 15-12 overall record, the fourth-straight season with a plus-.500 record. Among the highlights is senior Eric Anderson who was named Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year for a third-straight season, the first time in NE-10 history a player has earned Defensive Player of the Year accolades in three-straight years. Anderson was also a repeat member of the NE-10 First Team All-Conference and stands as the only Charger to earn first team honors. In addition to his NE-10 honors, Anderson was named a Daktronics/Division II Conference Commissioners Association Third Team AllAmerican. Following the season, Anderson signed a contract to play with the Gladiators Trier in Germany’s Basketball Bundesliga ProA League.
The 2013-14 squad led the nation in personal fouls per game (13.6), while the Chargers ranked second in Division II in fewest turnovers per game (8.9). New Haven also ranked in the top 10 nationally in scoring defense (6th) and field goal percentage defense (9th).
2016-17 OUTLOOK
In 2015-16, Hotaling coached the Chargers to arguably the biggest win in program history when New Haven knocked off crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State University. The Blue and Gold led the Owls for all but six minutes as they defeated the No. 2 ranked team, according to the NABC Coaches Poll, 79-66. The Chargers would close out the season with an 8-18 overall record, while redshirt freshman Michael Bourke scored the only postseason accolade for the Chargers, named to the Northeast-10 All-Rookie squad after averaging 13.4 points per game.
Hotaling’s 2012-13 and 2013-14 teams finished with back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since 2002-03 and 2003-04, while also earning back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Postseason. Hotaling’s 21-9 record in 2014-15 stands as the most wins in a single season under his leadership, while the Chargers’ 14-6 record in the NE-10 that season was the second-best since joining the conference in 2008-09.
2016-17 PLAYERS
The ninth head coach in program history, Hotaling ranks fourth in program history in winning percentage and overall wins, entering 2016-17 13 wins shy of becoming the fourth coach at New Haven to reach the 100 win plateau. Of the nine head coaches in New Haven men’s basketball history, eight of them have coached at least 100 games for the Chargers. Hotaling’s 55-45 mark through his first 100 contests was the best since 1995.

Exum also each claimed All-Northeast-10 honors. Hotaling led the Chargers to a 15-13 record in 2011-12 - a seven-win improvement from the previous campaign and the club’s first winning season since 2004-05. New Haven also qualified for the Northeast-10 Conference Championship, winning a First Round contest at Pace before falling in a 54-51 heartbreaker at Adelphi in the Quarterfinals. In his first season as head coach, the Chargers posted an 8-18 overall mark and a 6-16 record in the Northeast-10 Conference. Throughout the season, New Haven ranked among the top three-point shooting teams in Division II. Freshman Justin Exum concluded the season ranked 17th nationally in three-point field goals per game. He was also the highest ranked freshman in that category. As a team, UNH ranked 31st in three-point field goal percentage and 32nd in three-point field goals per game. With over 15 years of college coaching experience, Hotaling most recently spent five seasons as an assistant at Eastern Kentucky University. While at EKU, the Colonels enjoyed a number of record-setting seasons, including two postseason runs. Hotaling’s main responsibilities at EKU included working with the guards and coordinating the program’s recruiting efforts.
In 2010, EKU ranked in the top 10 in threepoint field goals made, turnovers per game and assist/turnover ratio. The Colonels also broke the Ohio Valley Conference record for three-pointers made in back-to-back seasons (2008-09 and 2009-10). Prior to arriving at Eastern Kentucky, Hotaling served four years as a full-time assistant at Yale University from 2001-05. He also served one season as an assistant at UNH in 2000-01. The Niverville, N.Y. native began his coaching career at Adelphi University in 1998 where he spent one season as an assistant. Hotaling earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from University at Albany in 1995 and later earned his master’s degree from Adelphi University. In the fall of 2012, he was inducted into the University at Albany Great Dane Hall of Fame as both an individual student-athlete and as a member of the 1993-94 men’s basketball team that advanced to the NCAA Division III Elite Eight. After graduating from Albany he went on to play professionally in Europe for the Cardiff Phoenix Basketball Club in Cardiff, Wales, and the Plymouth Rotolok Raiders in Plymouth, England. Hotaling and his wife, Keely Garden, have two children – Owen and Susan.
In 2007, the Colonels earned a berth to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship tournament. EKU was selected to the College Basketball Invitational this season after amassing a 20-11 regular season record. The Colonels were one of the best offensive teams in the country during Hotaling’s tenure as well.

2016-17 PREVIEW Entering his seventh season at the helm of the New Haven men’s basketball team, head coach Ted Hotaling returns five players from a squad that finished 8-18 last season. Hotaling complements the five returning players with nine new faces, including a pair of transfers, highlighted by Bridgeport, Conn. native Danny Upchurch who relocates after playing at Division I Charleston Southern last season. BACKCOURT In the backcourt, redshirt sophomore Michael Bourke and junior Tommy Hunt look to lead the team offensively, after finishing second and third on the squad in scoring last year. Bourke, a Northeast-10 Conference All-Rookie Team member, finished last season averaging 13.4 points per contest while in just over 30 minutes a game. Appearing in 23 games, Bourke led the team in three-pointers made with 53 and finished second in steals with 16. Hunt, the only returner to play in all 26 games, averaged 9.1 points and 3.1 rebounds per game while playing just over 27 minutes per contest. Also returning to the backcourt is Joseph Doganiero. The junior played a career-high 29 minutes in the final match of the season against Le Moyne and shot an impressive .333 from beyond the arc for the season. Joining the three returners in the backcourt is Upchurch. The junior saw action in every contest last season at Charleston Southern, averaging just over 11 minutes per game. Also looking to provide depth in the backcourt will be freshmen Elijah Bailey, Darius Roundtree, D’Nathan Knox, Adam Beaton and Derrick Rowland.
26
Bailey (Freeport, N.Y.) graduated as a member of the 1,000 point club on his way to being named Tri-State Player of the Year and First-Team All-New England at The Hotchkiss School. Roundtree (Plainfield, N.J.) comes to West Haven after playing at Coastal Academy last year, while Knox (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) was a two-time All-League Player at Half Hollow Hills East as well as an All-Long Island Honorable Mention and All-New York State Honorable Mention. Beaton (Ansonia, Conn.) was a Shoreline Conference Honorable Mention and CIAC Scholar-Athlete at Hyde Leadership. Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y.) was a three-year member of the state-ranked varsity team at Green Tech Charter High School. FRONTCOURT In the frontcourt, sophomores Jacob Pupavac and Najee Larcher will look to fill in the production lost by graduating seniors Samir McDaniels and Joshua Guddemi. Last season, Pupavac appeared in 24 contests for the Chargers, all off the bench. He averaged 8.8 minutes per game to go along with 1.0 points and 1.3 rebounds per game while shooting .435 from the field. Larcher started all 16 games he appeared in, averaging 4.4 points and 3.4 rebounds over 19.9 minutes per game. As a rookie, he set career highs with 11 points against crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State University (Dec. 2) and twice recorded six rebounds (Nov. 24 against Adelphi and Jan. 12 against Stonehill). Joining the pair of returning faces in the frontcourt rotation will be Serbian transfer Mihailo Vasic, freshmen Kessly Felizor and Roy Kane, Jr. Vasic, who hails from Novi Sad, Serbia, previously played

at Harcum Junior College where he started 22 of 32 games. In 22.7 minutes per contest, he averaged 11.9 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.1 steals while shooting .664 from the field. Vasic twice surpassed the 20-point plateau, including a career-high 21 points on Jan. 29.
The Chargers close out the opening month of the season when they meet crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State University for the first of two scheduled meetings on Nov. 30 at Moore Field House. The road match-up against SCSU represents the final game away from Charger Gymnasium for the remainder of the calendar year as the five contests in the month of December will all be played in West Haven.

The next three games represent the opening of a 20-game Northeast-10 Conference schedule with the league opener coming as the first appearance at Charger Gymnasium when UNH hosts Le Moyne on November 16. UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University President Since becoming president of the University of New Haven in 2004, Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D. has led the University of New Haven through a period of remarkable growth and development. In the past seven years alone, enrollment has grown by 42 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students, who hail from 35 states and some 45 countries. Full-time undergraduate enrollment has grown by 86 percent and applications have increased by 176 percent. During this time, the University has completed over $110 million in construction projects and has launched 17 new academic programs. UNH now ranks among the top comprehensive universities in the North and boasts nationally ranked programs in a number of majors across business, criminal justice, engineering, forensic science, and the liberal arts and sciences. In recognition of his contributions to transforming the University, Dr. Kaplan was named “Businessman of the Year” by Business New Haven magazine in 2008. President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. The award recognizes President Kaplan’s efforts to make UNH a national leader in experiential education, requiring every undergraduate student to complete an internship, an academic service learning experience, international study or a faculty-mentored research project before graduation. Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the
only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report. Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at EberhardKarls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies. Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University. In addition to earning his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Dr. Kaplan holds a Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German and English) from Eberhard-Karls Universität and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.
and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to more than 30 countries during their 35 years together, including Tanzania, where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters. Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. Irv Glovin was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and film form (he was associate producer of the film), and is President of the Oskar Schindler Humanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the Foundation. Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan grew up in Southwest Germany. She holds the equivalent of an American M.A. in Secondary Education and taught at a German high school. She is a ceramics artist and taught German and pottery as an adjunct faculty member in Colorado and Virginia.
Dr. Kaplan is the author of a book on American translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke; a book on Tim O’Brien’s fiction, published by the University of South Carolina Press; and an anthology of international war stories, published by the University Press of Colorado. He also has written a number of scholarly essays. Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike
Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation Deborah Chin became the University of New Haven’s fourth Director of Athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 16 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair of the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008 and currently serves as Chair of the NCAA Division II Membership Committee. She was promoted to Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation in 2010. UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament over 75 times in 20-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of state-of-the-art blue and gold synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. During the previous two years, the Chargers have seen great accomplishments on the playing field and in the classroom. In each of the previous two athletic seasons, at least 14-of-16 teams advanced to the postseason and the New Haven student-athletes have boasted over a 3.10 cumulative grade point average. In 2007, Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both

Shannon Gagne won an unmatched five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship meet - the highest finish in program history. • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 twenty times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight thirteen times. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 33 Regional appearances, including their most recent run in 2013. • Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies and First Round Draft Pick Cameron Drew. • The football program has appeared in six NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997.
