CHARGER SOCCER 2016 COACHES 2016 PLAYERS 2016 OUTLOOK 2015 REVIEW

After a subpar year in 2014, the University of New Haven women’s soccer team rebounded to make the Northeast-10 Conference Championship in 2015 and enters 2016 with a solid mix of both established veterans and young talent. This edition of the Chargers looks to build off a 10-win season a year ago and make a return trip to the NE-10 postseason. Laura Duncan returns for her seventh season at the helm. She has led the squad to five winning seasons in her previous six years and holds an overall record of 56-42-12 with the Blue and Gold. Forwards New Haven returns several players up front. The most experienced in the group is senior Danielle Widmann who has appeared in 43 career matches and finished fourth for the Chargers with two goals and five points a year ago. She will also be counted on for leadership, both on and off the field. Also returning to the fold are Emily Morello and Marisa Pacapelli. Morello appeared in all 18 matches last season, starting two, and recording a game-winning goal on her first collegiate marker against Dowling. Pacapelli was an All-State selection as a senior in high school and played in 11 matches a year ago. Nicole Caruso also returns and will look to provide depth up front. Two players returning from medical redshirt seasons in 2015 should bolster Chargers’ front line. Sarah Bosco was an All-State and All-Conference performer as a senior at Berlin High School. Josette Breeden comes to West Haven following a stellar career at Vanden High School in Vacaville, Calif. where she led the Vikings in goals and assists in each of her four seasons. She was named All-Solano County Athletic Conference in each of her four seasons as well, garnering First Team honors as a junior and senior. Joining the team is freshman Peggy Kennedy who will see minutes in a reserve role.

Entering the mix for New Haven will be freshmen Sorcha Ni Bhraonain and Megan Georges. Both are expected to see playing time this season with the pair each expected to fight for significant minutes. Tana Tufts and Grace Scorcia also enter as a freshman and will be asked to provide depth in the midfield. Kelly Quigley also returns for the Blue and Gold, but will sit out the year with a medical redshirt. Defense Despite graduating a pair of starters, the Chargers boast an experienced back line, returning senior Carlie Schecht and sophomore Annie White, who each logged more than 1,700 minutes last season. Schecht finished second on the squad with three assists in 2015 while White was a Northeast-10 Conference All-Rookie Team and a NEWISA All-New England Second Team member. Also returning to the back line are Danielle Matassa and Lauren Low, who will each be asked to increase their roles from previous seasons. Entering the fold are freshmen Megan Fischer, Samantha Bostdorf and Danielle Cicolini. Fischer is projected to vie for a starting role right away after earning All-State accolades as a senior at Island Trees High School. Goalkeepers In net, New Haven will be led by junior goalkeeper Deandra Nash who posted an 8-5-4 record and a 1.31 goals against average in 17 matches last season. She ranked second in the NE-10 with 108 saves and a .824 save percentage while finishing the year with six shutouts. Returning for her second season between the pipes is Kyra Wolonsavich who is expected to back up Nash in 2016.

Schedule Midfield The Chargers are slated to play nine games at Kayo Field in 2016. They alternate The Blue and Gold will look to once again be strong through the middle with the non-conference home and road contests to start the year, taking on Queens (Sept. return of several key performers. New Haven looks to seniors Sierra Stein and 1) and Saint Thomas Aquinas (Sept. 8) at home, sandwiched around a road date Shannon Enright to help control the ball while also getting key contributions from at NYIT (Sept. 3.) New Haven opens Northeast-10 Conference competition on Alison Morgan, and Rachel Dempsey. Stein was a NEWISA Second Team All-New the road at Le Moyne (Sept. 10) before playing its first home conference match England selection and ranked second on the team with five goals and 11 points against Adelphi on Sept. 14. The NE-10 schedule dominates the remainder of the last season. Dempsey scored the first goal of the season for the Chargers in 2015 matches with only a break on Oct. 18 to play at Mercy in a non-conference tilt. just a minute into the year when she tallied against Georgian Court. Enright scored a game-winner in a key match at Southern Connecticut in early October.

UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University President

Since becoming president of the University of New Haven in 2004, Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D. has led the University of New Haven through a period of remarkable growth and development. In the past seven years alone, enrollment has grown by 42 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students, who hail from 35 states and some 45 countries. Full-time undergraduate enrollment has grown by 86 percent and applications have increased by 176 percent. During this time, the University has completed over $110 million in construction projects and has launched 17 new academic programs. UNH now ranks among the top comprehensive universities in the North and boasts nationally ranked programs in a number of majors across business, criminal justice, engineering, forensic science, and the liberal arts and sciences. In recognition of his contributions to transforming the University, Dr. Kaplan was named “Businessman of the Year” by Business New Haven magazine in 2008. President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. The award recognizes President Kaplan’s efforts to make UNH a national leader in experiential education, requiring every undergraduate student to complete an internship, an academic service learning experience, international study or a faculty-mentored research project before graduation. Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch

campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report. Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies. Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University. In addition to earning his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at EberhardKarls Universität, Dr. Kaplan holds a Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German and English) from EberhardKarls Universität and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

to more than 30 countries during their 35 years together, including Tanzania, where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters. Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. Irv Glovin was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and film form (he was associate producer of the film), and is President of the Oskar Schindler Humanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the Foundation. Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan grew up in Southwest Germany. She holds the equivalent of an American M.A. in Secondary Education and taught at a German high school. She is a ceramics artist and taught German and pottery as an adjunct faculty member in Colorado and Virginia.

Dr. Kaplan is the author of a book on American translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke; a book on Tim O’Brien’s fiction, published by the University of South Carolina Press; and an anthology of international war stories, published by the University Press of Colorado. He also has written a number of scholarly essays. Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled

2015 REVIEW

Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation Deborah Chin became the University of New Haven’s fourth Director of Athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 16 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair of the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008 and currently serves as Chair of the NCAA Division II Membership Committee. She was promoted to Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation in 2010. UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament over 75 times in 20-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of state-of-the-art blue and gold synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. During the previous two years, the Chargers have seen great accomplishments on the playing field and in the classroom. In each of the previous two athletic seasons, at least 14-of-16 teams advanced to the postseason and the New Haven student-athletes have boasted over a 3.10 cumulative grade point average. In 2007, Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals

60

were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. After a five-year hiatus, the Charger football team returned to the gridiron in 2009, and have since won three conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame (Inducted October, 1998), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (April, 1999), and the Athletics Hall of Fame at her alma mater, SUNY-Cortland.

A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979.

In a 19-year career (1975-93) as head coach for the Chargers, she posted a 578-179 record (.764) and was at that time only the fifth Division II coach to win 500 career matches. The Chargers made 10 trips to the NCAA tournament during Chin’s reign, reaching the top five four times. Her awards include six AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year distinctions as well as eight New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. Chin coached the Chargers to twelve 30-win seasons, including six straight. She is also recognized internationally as a top volleyball clinician.

Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 1998-99 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award. In 2010, she was honored as an Elm City Legend, an event which recognizes the greater New Haven region’s best in sports and community dedication. As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a Hall of Fame

As an administrator, Chin has served on over 30 national and regional committees. In addition to her current position as Chair of the NCAA Division II Membership Committee, her resume includes terms as Chair of the NCAA Division II Management Council (2008), chairperson for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Committee (1988-92), the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee (1997-2001), the NCAA Northeast Regional Football Committee (1999-2003), and the NACDA John McLendon Minority Scholarship Committee (1999-present). She also served four years on the NACWAA Board of Directors (1993-96), and acted as the Volleyball Commissioner for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games held in New Haven. A graduate of SUNY-Cortland with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education, Chin earned her Master’s of Science degree in Physical Education from UNC-Greensboro.

DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987, becoming the first team from the Northeast Region to win the title. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger athletics history. Shannon Gagne won an unmatched five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship meet - the highest finish in program history. • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 twenty times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight thirteen times. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky”Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 33 Regional appearances, including their most recent run in 2013. • Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies and First Round Draft Pick Cameron Drew. • The football program has appeared in six NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. At the time, the title-game appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. Most recently, the football program has appeared in the NCAA tournament in both 2011 and 2012. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation. • Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA finals in 1976 as has appeared in three Final Fours. • Women’s Lacrosse has appeared in the NCAA regional championship four times, most recently in 2016.
