The 2012 campaign saw the Chargers advance to their 12th NCAA Elite Eight, as Salters was recognized by her peers as the AVCA East Region Coach of the Year for the sixth time in her career. Led by All-America honorees Keidy Candelaria and Amber Cannady, the 2012 Chargers finished at 30-2, winning the Northeast-10 and NCAA East Region Championships with the best record in all of NCAA Division II. Candelaria was named the NE-10 Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and was joined by Cannady on the conference’s First Team. Ane and Kristen Lee also garnered NE-10 major awards as Setter and Rookie of the Year, respectively.

HISTORY & RECORDS

Salters again led the New Haven women’s volleyball program to national prominence in 2014 as the Chargers advanced to the NCAA Elite 8 for the ninth time under her leadership and the 13th time in the history of the program. After leading the Chargers to a 24-9 overall record and an upset of Bridgeport in the NCAA East Regional finals, Salters was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) East Region Coach of the Year for the seventh time in her career (1996, 1996, 2002, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2015).

Individually, Salters mentored Amber Cannady to an outstanding senior season that included Daktronics First Team All-America and AVCA Honorable Mention All-America selections. Cannady was also lauded individually as Daktronics East Region Player of the Year, AVCA All-East Region, Northeast-10 Player of the Year, First Team All-Northeast-10, Most Outstanding Player of the Northeast-10 Championship and a member of the NCAA East Region AllChampionship Team.

2015 REVIEW

During a 2015 season in which Salters led the Chargers to a 10th straight appearance in the NCAA Championship, the programs all-time wins leader joined an elite group of coaches at the Division II level when New Haven defeated Southern New Hampshire earning Salters her 600th career victory. The win was part of 18 total for the Blue and Gold in 2015 as the Chargers advanced to the Northeast-10 Conference Championship game for the fifth time since joining the league in 2008.

In 2013 the Chargers won their second consecutive Northeast-10 Championship and fourth in six seasons as a member of the conference. The Chargers also completed their sixth-straight unbeaten trip through the NE-10, increasing their all-time mark to 88-0 in regular season conference play. The 2013 club made its eighth consecutive NCAA Championship appearance and the 18th in Salters’ 20-year tenure, reaching its third straight NCAA Division II East Region Championship Match.

2016 OUTLOOK

Salters’ 604 victories following the 2015 season is the most ever in school history as she passed former coach and current Director of Athletics Debbie Chin as the all-time winningest coach. Her 604 career victories rank her eighth alltime in Division II coaching wins. Her success is even more outstanding in terms of winning percentage, where her .770 mark against Division II competition is 13th all-time among coaches with 10 or more years at the Division II level.

Kea-Marie Olaso, with the same four also earning All-Northeast 10 laurels.

2016 PREVIEW The University of New Haven women’s volleyball team enters 2016 looking to build off a 10th straight appearance in the NCAA Championship after making a run to the Northeast-10 Conference title match in 2015. Entering the 23rd season under head coach Robin Salters ’91, the Chargers return nine letterwinners including four starters from last season. Salters returns to the sidelines of Charger Gymnasium after setting a milestone in 2015, earning her 600th career victory, the most in program history. Hitters Leading the Chargers attacking efforts in 2016 will be senior Meghan Kennelly who returns to the Blue and Gold after setting the pace on both ends of the ball last season with career-highs in kills (420) and digs (417). The Northeast-10 All-Conference Second Team selection finished second in the league in total kills, while her 3.16 kills per set was sixth most in the conference. Joining Kennelly on the outside will be a pair of returners, sophomore Nicole Morales and junior Meagan Anderson, and junior transfer Caroline Martins. Both saw limited time in 2015 with Morales appearing in 26 matches and collecting 55 total kills and 28 digs. Included was a career-high nine kills in a pair of non-conference matches against LIU Post and Georgian Court. Anderson closed out the season with 27 kills over 18 matches while adding 60 digs. One of two Brazilian players to join the Chargers in 2016, Martins comes to West Haven from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M where she finished second on the team with 275 kills which came on a .329 hitting percentage last season. She helped lead NEO to an appearance in the NJCAA national tournament in 2015 while also finishing among the team blocking leaders with 49 total. The Blue and Gold will have a pair of returning middle options in 2016, led by junior Alex Bussey who closed out her sophomore season with 165 kills while adding 94 total blocks, second most on the team. The Atlanta, Ga. native capped off last season earning Northeast-10 Conference All-Championship team honors after averaging seven kills over the three tournament matches while also contributing seven in the first round of the NCAA Championship against Bridgeport. Joining Bussey in the middle will be classmate Lexis Peterson who started 10 of the 22 matches she appeared in last season. Overall, Peterson chipped in 54 kills and 31 blocks, setting a career-high with 10 kills against Bentley. Rounding out the middle options will be a junior college transfer, Fernanda Da Silva. The second incoming Charger who hails from Brazil, Da Silva comes to West Haven from Franklin Phillips College where she finished with 242 kills and a team-high 191 total blocks which was fourth best in the nation in the NJCAA. In her one season at Franklin Phillips, she led the Lady Plainsmen to the Western Junior College Athletic Conference Division I Championship, earning Honorable Mention All-WJCAC honors.

Setters The Chargers will rely on a pair of experienced setters to lead the offense in 2016. Making her return to the court after a preseason injury last year will be senior Annika Hacker. The native of Bayreuth, Germany collected 365 assists over her freshman and sophomore seasons. She is also a service threat, combining for 72 aces in her first two years, including leading the team as a sophomore with a career-high 45. Sophomore Kristine Rios also returns after starting all 34 matches in 2015 as the primary setter. Rios closed out her rookie campaign with 1,108 assists, third most in the Northeast-10 Conference. She was also second on the team with 396 digs and added 167 kills and 50 total blocks. Defensive Specialists On the defensive side of the ball, the Chargers have a pair of returning options in sophomores Brianna Mirmina and Lindsey Kim, while freshman Charleigh Crews bolsters the roster. Both Mirmina and Kim put up solid defensive efforts in their rookie campaign with Mirmina earning the starting libero role halfway through the season. In her initial campaign for the Blue and Gold Mirmina finished with 327 digs, just shy of three per set. She also added 19 aces and 51 assists. Kim closed out her freshman campaign with 157 digs to go along with 20 aces. Crews comes to West Haven after leading the Seacrest Country Day Stingrays to the Florida 2A State Championship in 2013 and a runner-up finish in 2014. She was a four year varsity starter who earned All-Area accolades as a junior and senior. The Naples, Fla. native played her club volleyball with the USA South Volley Center where she helped lead the team to the USAV Junior Nationals in three straight seasons from 2011-2013. Schedule The Chargers will open a 24-match schedule with their only in-season tournament when they travel to St. Petersburg, Fla. for the Eckerd College Invitational. In addition to the host Tritons, the season-opening event will include dates against Kentucky State, Oklahoma Baptist and UNC Pembroke. Among the 24 total matches, 11 will be played in the friendly confines of Charger Gym with the home opener scheduled for September 9 when UNH welcomes Queens to West Haven. In addition to Queens, the Blue and Gold will also play Post, LIU Post, NYIT, Bridgeport and Bloomfield in non-conference play. Included in the Chargers 24 matches are 14 Northeast-10 Conference match-ups, with a road date against Assumption (Sept. 17) set to open the conference slate.

The Chargers are searching for their eighth regular season conference title in nine seasons in the league. The top eight teams in the conference standings qualify for the NE-10 Championship, which opens with a quarterfinal on Nov. 15 at the site of the higher seed. The semifinals and championship match take place on Nov. 18-19 with the final four The opposite side for the Chargers will include a pair of transition play- hosted by the highest remaining seed following quarterfinal play. ers in Martins and Peterson while UNH welcomes an incoming option in the form of freshman Mallory Nowicki. Hailing of Grand Rapids, The NCAA Division II East Region Championship will take place Dec. Mich., Nowicki was an All-Conference and All-Division volleyball player 1-4 and the season culminates with the NCAA Division II Elite Eight at Northview High School. As a senior she received First Team All- being contested Dec. 8-10 in Sioux Falls, S.D. Conference and All-County accolades while leading the Wildcats in kills.

EXPECTATION OF EXCELLENCE The University of New Haven boasts one of the all-time best Division II women’s volleyball programs in the nation. Since joining the NCAA in 1982, UNH has appeared in the NCAA Tournament 29 times in 33 seasons. That string includes 21 appearances in the Sweet Sixteen and 13 berths to the Elite Eight. Overall in 39 seasons, the Chargers have posted a record of 1,162-342 - a winning percentage of .773. Two outstanding women are responsible for guiding the program to these astounding heights, recruiting top student-athletes and coaching against the best the country had to offer. The résumé of current head coach Robin Salters is highlighted on page 4. Deborah Chin, who is currently the Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics at UNH, is the program’s founder and was the Chargers’ head coach for the first 19 seasons. During that time, she fashioned herself a Hall of Fame career - literally. Chin was a member of the fourth class to enter the AVCA Hall of Fame, the sport’s highest honor, in December of 2006. She posted a record of 576-178 (.764) as coach and at the time of her retirement her winning percentage was ranked among the top five all-time. She led the Chargers to 10 NCAA Division II tournaments (and three AIAW tournaments), and New Haven was ranked in the top five four times. Chin’s teams won 30 or more matches 12 times, including six straight years. Six times she was named Northeast Region Coach of the Year, and eight times she was named New England College Conference Coach of the Year. In 10 of her final 11 seasons, Chin led the Chargers to at least the Sweet Sixteen, including four trips to the Elite Eight.

President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. The award recognizes President Kaplan’s efforts to make UNH a national leader in experiential education, requiring every undergraduate student to complete an internship, an academic service learning experience, international study or a faculty-mentored research project before graduation. Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the

only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report. Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation Deborah Chin became the University of New Haven’s fourth Director of Athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 16 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair of the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008 and currently serves as Chair of the NCAA Division II Membership Committee. She was promoted to Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation in 2010. UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament over 75 times in 20-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of state-of-the-art blue and gold synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. During the previous two years, the Chargers have seen great accomplishments on the playing field and in the classroom. In each of the previous two athletic seasons, at least 14-of-16 teams advanced to the postseason and the New Haven student-athletes have boasted over a 3.10 cumulative grade point average. In 2007, Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both

goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. After a five-year hiatus, the Charger football team returned to the gridiron in 2009, and have since won three conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals. A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979. Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 1998-99 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award. In 2010, she was honored as an Elm City Legend, an event which recognizes the greater New Haven region’s best in sports and community dedication.

As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a Hall of Fame resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame (Inducted October, 1998), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (April, 1999), and the Athletics Hall of Fame at her alma mater, SUNY-Cortland. In a 19-year career (1975-93) as head coach for the Chargers, she posted a 578-179 record (.764) and was at that time only the fifth Division II coach to win 500 career matches. The Chargers made 10 trips to the NCAA tournament during Chin’s reign, reaching the top five four times. Her awards include six AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year distinctions as well as eight New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. Chin coached the Chargers to twelve 30-win seasons, including six straight. She is also recognized internationally as a top volleyball clinician. As an administrator, Chin has served on over 30 national and regional committees. In addition to her current position as Chair of the NCAA Division II Membership Committee, her resume includes terms as Chair of the NCAA Division II Management Council (2008), chairperson for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Committee (1988-92), the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee (1997-2001), the NCAA Northeast Regional Football Committee (1999-2003), and the NACDA John McLendon Minority Scholarship Committee (1999-present). She also served four years on the NACWAA Board of Directors (1993-96), and acted as the Volleyball Commissioner for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games held in New Haven. A graduate of SUNY-Cortland with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education, Chin earned her Master’s of Science degree in Physical Education from UNC-Greensboro.

DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS

• Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987, becoming the first team from the Northeast Region to win the title. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger athletics history. Shannon Gagne won an unmatched five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship meet - the highest finish in program history. • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 twenty times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight thirteen times. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 33 Regional appearances, including their most recent run in 2013. • Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies and First Round Draft Pick Cameron Drew. • The football program has appeared in six NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997.
