The all-time winningest softball coach at the University of New Haven, Jen Starek enters her 11th season as the head coach of the Chargers in 2017. Overall in her tenure, the Chargers have made six NCAA postseason appearances including the program’s first appearance in the Super Regionals in 2010. That same season, the Chargers set a school record with 42 wins and an .840 winning percentage. As the longest tenured coach in program history, Starek enters the 2017 season one win shy of hitting the 300 win plateau with a career record of 299-170-2 (.634). The Native of Holliston, Mass. is a two-time Northeast-10 Coach of the Year, most recently in 2014 when she led New Haven to the NE10 Southwest Division regular-season title for the first time since divisional play began in 2013.

Over her career, Starek has coached four All-Americans including 2010 graduate Breanne Gleason who is a three-time All-America and the Daktronics East Region Pitcher and Player of the Year, the only player under Starek to earn that distinction. Additionally, 13 of Starek’s players have been named to All-Region teams, while 19 have earned All-Conference distinction, including Gleason who was the NE10 Pitcher and Player of the Year in 2010 as well as Pitcher of the Year in 2009 and Christina Gelardi who earned NE10 Player of the Year accolades in 2013.

Additionally, 17 of Starek’s current or former players are scattered throughout the All-Time record books. Starek’s former players also account for the alltime leader in at-bats (Gleason), hits (Nicole Downs), runs (Gelardi), doubles (Gleason), home runs (Downs), runs batted in (Lindsey Couturier), stolen bases (Chelsea Harold), walks (Gelardi), pitching appearances (Gleason), pitching wins (Gleason), innings pitched (Gleason) and strikeouts (Gleason).

As Starek hit the decade mark in 2016, she led the Chargers to the NE10 Conference Championship for the sixth time in seven years and closed out the campaign with a 23-15 overall record and a 12-11 mark in conference play. Five Chargers earned All-Conference honors for New Haven, highlighted by freshman Taylor Luzzi who along with Third Team All-Conference honors was also named the NE10 Rookie of the Year, the first under Starek. Joining her in earning league distinction was Nicole King, Julie Devlin, Marissa Colby and Jen Palase who also garnered All-Region honors from the D2CCA and the NFCA. The All-Conference honors for Palase and King in 2016 marked the second straight year the pair scored the accolades as each were named to the AllConference Second Team in 2015 as well. That year, which included King becoming the fifth player with 400 or more strikeouts, the pair helped lead New Haven to a 16-16-12 record.

THE UNIVERSITY

The 2014 season marked Starek’s second Northeast-10 Coach of the Year honor as the Chargers won the NE10 Southwest Division regular-season title closing out the year with a 29-18 overall record. With an 18-8 conference slate, New Haven hosted the conference championship, but fell to eventual champion Southern New Hampshire before earning the fourth seed in the NCAA East Region Championship and hosting the regional on campus. In 2013, Starek produced the Chargers’ seventh-straight winning season – a stretch that began when she took over the program in 2007. The team finished

38-15 and reached both the NE10 and NCAA Regional championship games. New Haven earned its first NFCA national ranking (No. 24) since landing at No. 21 in the 2011 preseason poll. Starek also guided the program’s first-ever NFCA All-America First Team selection, Christina Gelardi, to Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year laurels. Gelardi led the nation with a .649 on-base percentage, while pitcher Micah Stonesifer and first baseman Jess Spivey also collected All-Region accolades. The Chargers finished 29-19 in 2012 and earned the seventh seed in the Northeast-10 Championship, going on to knock off second Adelphi and advance to the championship weekend tournament. That season, Starek mentored Shannon Angehr to First Team All-NE-10 and Second Team NFCA All-East Region laurels in the outfield. In 2011, New Haven advanced to the Northeast-10 Championship as the fourth seed and was one of three teams left standing on the tournament’s final day of action. The Chargers also claimed the seventh seed in the NCAA East Region Championship, marking the club’s fourth-straight NCAA postseason trip. After concluding the season with a 34-19 overall record, Chelsea Harold and Gelardi both earned NFCA All-America honors and were two of the four Chargers to claim All-NE10 recognition. The 2010 campaign was a landmark season for the Chargers highlighted by earning the program’s first NE10 Regular Season Championship and the top seed in the NCAA Division II East Region Championship. Starek claimed NE10 Conference Coach of the Year honors for the first time as she guided the Blue and Gold to a program-record 42 wins and made the longest NCAA postseason run in program history, finishing the spring ranked No. 16 in the NFCA Division II Top 25 poll. After sweeping the regional, the Chargers advanced to their first ever Super Regional, falling to Molloy in the deciding game of a best-of-three series. The 2010 season also marked the end of arguably one of the best four-year careers in New Haven softball history. Breanne Gleason, Starek’s only former player currently inducted in the New Haven Athletics Alumni Hall of Fame, was a two-time All-America honoree and only the second player in Northeast-10 history to earn Pitcher and Player of the Year in the same season (2010). She was also the 20th NCAA Division II pitcher to record 1,000 career strikeouts and the 22nd to register 100 wins. Gleason was a four-time All-Region selection, a two-time First Team All-NE-10 honoree and recorded the most recent perfect game in New Haven history – a 3-0 win over Dowling on March 17, 2010. Starek took over the Chargers’ program in 2007 and led the team to a 26-19 record – an eight-win improvement from the previous campaign. She followed that up by guiding the Chargers to the NCAA East Regional Championship final in 2008 and 2009. Prior to her arrival at New Haven, Starek spent two years as head softball and field hockey coach at Simmons College in Boston. The Sharks’ 2006 softball team won the Colleges of the Fenway Tournament and scored an opening-round win in the Great Northeast Atlantic Conference (GNAC) Playoffs. The team posted a 19-19 record overall, including wins in seven of the team’s last nine games,

She was also the co-head coach of Pressure Softball’s 16U Team during 2005 and 2006.

A standout softball and field hockey player at Springfield, Starek graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in athletic training from Springfield College in 2001, and earned an MS in athletic administration in 2003. As a catcher and outfielder in softball, she was twice a NEWMAC First Team All-Conference

Coming off its sixth appearance in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship in the last seven years, the University of New Haven softball team is expected to once again contend for a berth in the postseason as it brings back a strong corps of returning players in 2017. The Chargers will also have some big shoes to fill following the graduation of multiple All-Conference players. CATCHER Returning at catcher is junior Marissa Colby who appeared in all 38 games for New Haven last season, garnering Third Team All-NE10 recognition following a season where she hit .322 and had a .415 on-base percentage. Joining the Chargers behind the plate is junior transfer Alycia Marsello who hit .286 in two seasons at Georgian Court, leading the Lions with a .306 average, three home runs and 24 RBI in 2016. Providing depth will be freshman Samantha Errera who was a two-time All-Conference performer at Cedar Creek High School. INFIELD New Haven returns all four starters in the infield, including a pair of All-Conference performers. Up the middle, seniors Julie Devlin and Gabby DeLeo make up the Chargersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; double play tandem. Devlin was named Northeast-10 Second Team All-Conference and NE10 Academic All-Conference, hitting .340 while leading the team with 10 doubles, smacking three homers and driving in 16. DeLeo is one of the surest-handed fielders in school history, entering 2017 with a career .983 fielding percentage, committing just one error last season. Also adept with the bat, she hit .257 last year with 14 RBI.

Team member hit .392 last season with three home runs and 28 RBI, the latter total ranking ninth in the NE10. Junior Kristine Liptack is expected to patrol first base. She has been very durable for the Blue and Gold starting 71 of 72 possible games in her career entering the season. Junior Erin Stever and sophomore Madison Derosia also return for New Haven and will be counted on for speed around the infield. Both were valuable in reserve roles last season, scoring a combined 13 runs. Joining the Chargers are senior Senior Sade King and freshman Allie McGrory. King will play her final semester in a softball uniform after completing a successful basketball career for the Blue and Gold. OUTFIELD Junior Tori Schiebe and sophomore Sierra Whitlock are expected to return to their starting positions for the Chargers. Schiebe has started all 72 games of her career, hitting .284 last season while finishing third on the team with 17 RBI. Whitlock jumped right into the lineup last season and hit .300 while starting all 38 games, stealing six bases. Joining Schiebe and Whitlock are freshmen Alexandria Cunkle and Catherine Vaughan. Both are expected to vie for playing time as Cunkle was a Mid-Penn Commonwealth First Team member at Central Dauphin High School. A strong all-around player, Vaughan will see time in multiple positions all over the diamond.

Adding to the strong corps in the outfield are sophomores Rachel Gilmore, Vanessa Strohm and Jolie Morrell. Gilmore went 5-for-10 last season in a reserve role with two RBI. Strohm appeared in 10 On the corners, Taylor Luzzi is back at third base for her sophomore games off the bench for New Haven and Morrell singled in a run in season. The Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Year and Third her only at-bat of the season against Molloy on Feb. 21.

April begins with three straight dates against teams that participated in last season’s NCAA Tournament. New Haven travels to Caldwell (Apr. 2) and Molloy (Apr. 6), sandwiched around a home DH against Pace on Apr. 5. Following road doubleheaders at Assumption and Merrimack on Apr. 8 and 9, the Blue and Gold plays exclusively against NE10 Southwest Division competition for the remainder of the regular season. New Haven heads to Pace for a single game on Apr. 11 prior to returning home for a weekend series against American International on Apr. 14 and 15. A midweek set at Southern Connecticut follows on Apr. 19 before another home weekend series, this time against Saint Rose on Apr. 22-23. Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University President Since becoming president of the University of New Haven in 2004, Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D. has led the University of New Haven through a period of remarkable growth and development. In the past seven years alone, enrollment has grown by 42 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students, who hail from 35 states and some 45 countries. Full-time undergraduate enrollment has grown by 86 percent and applications have increased by 176 percent. During this time, the University has completed over $110 million in construction projects and has launched 17 new academic programs.

UNH now ranks among the top comprehensive universities in the North and boasts nationally ranked programs in a number of majors across business, criminal justice, engineering, forensic science, and the liberal arts and sciences. In recognition of his contributions to transforming the University, Dr. Kaplan was named “Businessman of the Year” by Business New Haven magazine in 2008.

Dr. Kaplan is the author of a book on American translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke; a book on Tim O’Brien’s fiction, published by the University of South Carolina Press; and an anthology of international war stories, published by the University Press of Colorado. He also has written a number of scholarly essays.

President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. The award recognizes President Kaplan’s efforts to make UNH a national leader in experiential education, requiring every undergraduate student to complete an internship, an academic service learning experience, international study or a faculty-mentored research project before graduation.

Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University. In addition to earning his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Dr. Kaplan holds a Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German and English) from Eberhard-Karls Universität and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to more than 30 countries during their 35 years together, including Tanzania, where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters.

Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actresscomedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at EberhardKarls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University

Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan grew up in Southwest Germany. She holds the equivalent of an American M.A. in Secondary Education and taught at a German high school. She is a ceramics artist and taught German and pottery as an adjunct faculty member in Colorado and Virginia.

The Northeast-10 Conference is an NCAA Division II conference that was established in 1979. The conference consists of 15 member institutions located throughout the Northeast in the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. With the addition of women’s golf in 2014-15, the NE-10 now sponsors a total of 24 sports. Two champions from the NE-10 were crowned at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships during the winter season. Then Merrimack’s Carly Muscaro won the women’s 400-meter dash title with a time of 52.34 the following night.

DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987, becoming the first team from the Northeast Region to win the title. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger athletics history. Shannon Gagne won an unmatched five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship meet - the highest finish in program history. • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 twenty times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight thirteen times. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky”Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 33 Regional appearances, including their most recent run in 2013. • Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies and First Round Draft Pick Cameron Drew. • The football program has appeared in six NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. At the time, the title-game appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. Most recently, the football program has appeared in the NCAA tournament in both 2011 and 2012. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation. • Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA finals in 1976 as has appeared in three Final Fours. • Women’s Lacrosse has appeared in the NCAA regional championship four times, most recently in 2016.
