RESIDENTIAL LIFE Making you feel at home is a priority at UNH. Our on-campus housing is available in eight residence halls. Residential Life staff members live in each hall and help promote an atmosphere conducive to study and social interaction among students. Residence Hall Councils, composed of students elected by their peers, plan social and recreational activities and serve as representatives for students living in each hall. Room accommodations range from traditional residence halls (equipped with a fitness room and campus convenience store) to multi-bedroom, apartment-style residences. The David A. Beckerman Recreation Center was made possible by a generous donation from alumnus David A. Beckerman. The Center includes basketball courts; a multi-sport court for rollerblading, roller hockey, volleyball and indoor soccer; a fitness center with aerobic equipment, weights and televisions; a multi-purpose room for yoga, step aerobics, Pilates and other activities; an elevated running track; and a lounge area for relaxation.

Laura Duncan has posted winning seasons assistant for the Fairfield University women’s soccer team. Duncan in each of her first two campaigns at New was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program, Haven. While at Fairfield, the Stags were twice crowned the Metro Atlantic Duncan’s 2011 Chargers defeated three teams that advanced to the Athletic Conference (MAAC) Champions (2005 & 2008) and Northeast-10 Conference Tournament en route to a 9-8-0 record. advanced to the NCAA Division I Tournament. Duncan also mentored Her club produced two All-Northeast-10 student-athletes – Amber two MAAC Players of the Year for the Stags. Simms ’15 and Monica Yanez ’14. Simms, a midfielder, also earned a place on the conference’s All-Rookie Team. A 2005 graduate of Central Connecticut State University, Duncan was a four-year letterwinner for the Blue Devils. She helped The fifth head coach in 19 seasons of New Haven women’s soccer, Central Connecticut to three consecutive Northeast Conference Duncan is the first to boast a winning record in her first two seasons, Championships and three straight NCAA Tournament appearances. having led the Chargers to a 9-8-2 mark in 2010. That squad won Duncan was a defender on the 2003 Blue Devils’ team that posted three of its final four matches to finish with a 7-6-2 conference 10 shutouts en route to a 16-win campaign and a victory over Boston record and qualify for the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. Duncan was also a two-time First Before coming to New Haven, Duncan served five seasons as an Team All-NEC honoree during her 57-match career in New Britain.

THE COACHES CASEY FROBEY

ASSISTANT COACH Casey Frobey joined the UNH women’s soccer coaching staff in the spring of 2012 as a graduate assistant coach.

After graduating from Fairfield in 2010 with as a major in Marketing and a Management minor, Frobey played with Asker FK in Norway. Frobey earned NSCAA All-America laurels as a scholastic athlete at Newtown High School. She was also two-time All-New England and All-State and earned slots on both the Connecticut Post All-Star Team and Danbury News-Times All-Area squad. She led Newtown to a Class LL State Championship in 2004.

Frobey was a two-time All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference honoree at Fairfield University, where she graduated as the program’s all-time leader with 84 starts and co-holder of the Stags’ record with 84 matches played. The 2006 MAAC Rookie of the Year and a two-year team captain at Fairfield, Frobey is also among the Stags’ all-time leaders in career points, goals and game-winning goals.

BEN WEISS

ASSISTANT COACH Ben Weiss is in his first season at New Haven in 2012. Weiss brings over five years of coaching experience at the scholastic and club levels to Laura Duncan’s staff.

during which time the women’s varsity program won three state championships. As a student-athlete, Weiss was a member of the 2006 ODAC Champions at Lynchburg College (Va.). He played scholastically at Joel Barlow High School in Redding, Conn., winning a CIAC Class ‘M’ State Championship in 2001.

After being left out of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament by a single point in the standings last season, the New Haven women’s soccer team takes the pitch this fall eyeing a return to the postseason and to prominence as a regional power. Laura Duncan, the first head coach in program history to post a winning record in each of her first two seasons with the Chargers, has assembled a group of 18 returners and seven newcomers for her third campaign on the sidelines at Kayo Field. Offensively, the Chargers welcome back five of their top six point scorers from last season, including sophomore midfielder Amber Simms, who led the club with six goals and 14 total points in 2011. Simms was recognized regionally as a NEWISA Division II Second Team All-New England honoree in addition to conference laurels as a Third Team All-Northeast-10 and All-Rookie Team pick. NEWISA Division II First Team All-New England selection Lucy Francisco and Second Team choice Monica Yanez, who also earned a Third Team All-Northeast-10 distinction, will return to the front line. Francisco scored four goals with 10 total points last fall and enters her senior campaign ranked 11th all-time in career goals (16) and 13th in career points (41) in program history. Yanez was the team leader with five assists in her sophomore season and also scored the game-winning goal in the Chargers’ 1-0 blanking of Bentley during conference play.

The attack will be supplemented by junior Alyssa Zargos and incoming freshmen Ashley Dawson, Marisa Garcia and Emily Hoffman. The Chargers’ back row boasts three defenders who started all 17 matches last season: seniors Danielle Iacono and Lauren Primovic and junior Heather Timmons. Fellow junior Amanda Hathaway started 16 matches on the New Haven defensive end, and graduate student Ali Español has taken the pitch for 55 career matches in a Charger uniform. Spelling the defensive starters in both the back row and the midfield will be returners Hannah Allen, Shelbi Guimond and Jenn Dobrodziej as well as newcomers Kayla Brewer, Becca Sierejko, Miranda Smith and Taylor Szyarto. The biggest vacancy to be filled will be between the posts, as Duncan looks to replace goalkeeper Kim Taylor ’12. Taylor, who played every minute in net for the Chargers in each of the last two campaigns, graduated ranked second in program history in career goals-against average and goalkeeper minutes played. Natasha Purchla and Moriah Saidel, both sophomores who spent last season behind Taylor, will compete during the preseason for starting goalkeeper duties.

•Massachusetts-Lowell and Merrimack joined the Golden Knights in the NCAA Tournament. •Four student-athletes from Saint Rose earned All-America status, including NSCAA Division II Player of the Year Carmelina Puopolo.

•Saint Rose’s Christina Cuffari - the NE-10 Player of the Year - was one of just three student-athletes to earn back-to-back Academic All-America nods. •Saint Michael’s earned an NSCAA Team Academic Award for the fourth consecutive season.

2012 PLAYERS

Christine Huber, a four-time all-conference selection, is second all-time in scoring at UNH. Her totals of 63 goals and 144 points were both school records until after the 2006 season. She burst onto the scene with 20 goals and 45 points in her first season, en route to one of her two First Team All-NECC awards, and led the program to a No. 6 ranking in the New England region. Huber still holds school records for goals (5) and points (10) in a single game. She later played professionally in the W-League in 2002 and 2003.

2012 COACHES

A four-year captain, Mireille DeRose-Esponda immediately starred in the first year of the program in 1993. She finished with 37 goals and added 19 assists for a total of 91 points in four years. She helped the 1996 team to a 13-5-1 record and the program’s first-ever postseason appearance (ECAC Tournament). She was selected to the New England Senior Bowl, and as a junior was All-New England Collegiate Conference and on two All-Region teams.

Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University President

Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies. Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University. In addition to earning his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Dr. Kaplan holds a Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German and English) from Eberhard-Karls Universität and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to more than 30 countries during their 35 years together, including Tanzania, where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters. Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. Irv Glovin was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and film form (he was associate producer of the film), and is President of the Oskar Schindler Humanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the Foundation. Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan grew up in Southwest Germany. She holds the equivalent of an American M.A. in Secondary Education and taught at a German high school. She is a ceramics artist and taught German and pottery as an adjunct faculty member in Colorado and Virginia.

President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. The award recognizes President Kaplan’s efforts to make UNH a national leader in experiential education, requiring every undergraduate student to complete an internship, an academic service learning experience, international study or a faculty-mentored research

Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report.

Since becoming president of the University of New Haven in 2004, Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D. has led the University of New Haven through a period of remarkable growth and development. In the past five years alone, enrollment has grown by 34 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students, who hail from 35 states and some 45 countries. Full-time undergraduate enrollment has grown by 59 percent and applications have increased by 176 percent. During this time, the University has completed over $100 million in construction projects and has launched 15 new academic programs.

As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a Hall of Fame resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame (Inducted

In a 19-year career (1975-93) as head coach for the Chargers, she posted a 578-179 record (.764) and was at that time only the fifth Division II coach to win 500 career matches. The Chargers made 10 trips to the NCAA tournament during Chin’s reign, reaching the top five four times. Her awards include six AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year distinctions as well as eight New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. Chin coached the Chargers to twelve 30-win seasons, including six straight. She is also recognized internationally as a top volleyball clinician. As an administrator, Chin has served on over 30 national and regional committees. In addition to her most recent position as Chair of the Division II Management Council, her resume includes terms as chairperson for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Committee (1988-92), the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee (1997-2001), the NCAA Northeast Regional Football Committee (1999-2003), and the NACDA John McLendon Minority Scholarship Committee (1999-present). She served four years on the NACWAA Board of Directors (1993-96), and acted as the Volleyball Commissioner for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games held in New Haven. A graduate of SUNY-Cortland with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education, Chin earned her Master’s of Science degree in Physical Education from UNC-Greensboro.

Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 199899 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award. In 2010, she was honored as an Elm City Legend, an event which recognizes the greater New Haven region’s best in sports and community dedication.

UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament over 50 times in 17-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of stateof-the-art blue and gold synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. In 2007, Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. After a five-year hiatus, the Charger football team returned to the gridiron in 2009, and have since won back-to-back conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979.

Deborah Chin became the school’s fourth Director of Athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 16 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008 and was promoted to Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation in 2010.

DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY Higher education has lasting importance on an individual’s future success. For this reason, the emphasis for the student-athlete experience at the University of New Haven is a comprehensive program of learning and development in a personal setting. As an NCAA Division II program, our approach provides growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and development of positive societal attitudes in service to community. The balance and integration of these different areas of learning opportunity provide our student-athletes a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead. The University of New Haven seeks to provide the world with leaders who can make a positive difference in a global society. Studentathletes are afforded unique opportunities for leadership because of the visibility provided through athletics competition. UNH’s intercollegiate program provides opportunities for its student-athletes to develop moral virtues, such as courage, self-confidence, and integrity and to learn communication and teamwork skills associated with outstanding leadership. Thus the Department of Athletics helps the University satisfy its primary aspiration, which is to prepare students to lead purposeful and fulfilling lives in a global society through experiential, collaborative, and discovery-based learning. The Department of Athletics is committed to delivering intercollegiate athletics programs that are consistent with the University’s mission and generates the trust and support of its various constituencies. The goal of the department is to field sports teams that compete successfully against other NCAA Division II teams while upholding the academic standards of the University of New Haven. The department is also committed to conducting its programs in strict adherence to the policies, rules and regulations set by the University’s administration, Board of Governors, the NCAA and the Northeast-10 Conference. Through its programs, the department gives its student-athletes of different genders, races, religions, national origins and sexual orientation opportunities to participate in intercollegiate competition. The intercollegiate program will function free of discrimination with a University commitment to the adherence to Title IX and the Office of Civil Rights guidelines. A major goal of the Department of Athletics is to help student-athletes realize the full potential of their athletic abilities while also increasing their intellectual capabilities and providing them a meaningful opportunity to earn a baccalaureate degree. The department will not compromise its commitment to educate and graduate its student-athletes. Department of Athletics personnel are expected to represent the University in a manner consistent with UNH’s principles and values. All personnel are expected to perform their responsibilities with the highest standards of integrity, ethical behavior and sportsmanship at all times. Coaches and staff are expected to treat student-athletes fairly and with respect and to facilitate leadership that helps them mature physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 eighteen times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight 11 times, including an Elite Eight appearance in 2008. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 32 Regional appearances. Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies. • Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987. • The football program has appeared in five NCAA playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. That title-game appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger history. Shannon Gagne won five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 National Championship meet. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation.
