TEXTILES&SURFACE DESIGN This year’s final year students on the BA (Hons) Textiles and Surface Design programme exhibit a diverse approach to the design and application of textiles for both industry and craft based practices.
‘Anthropocene and Urbanities’ is a collection based around environmental issues. Sophie Roberts began by looking at urban scarring surfaces of ground texture and road markings. Further focus on architecture provided Sophie with key shapes to take into design for a range of contemporary surface designs for the contract and hotel market. Sophie observed and extracted abstract shapes and forms found within buildings by photographing structural features, surface pattern and textures that have been caused through erosion and oxidization. Sophie was supported through this project by Area Rugs in Yorkshire who provided pieces of traditional gun-tufted rugs, and Shaws who kindly produced sample pieces using the latest digital print technologies for contract carpets used in the hotel industry.

‘Exotic Botanical’ is a co-ordinated collection of drawn and painted botanicals and fruit, found within hot-houses and tropical settings. Drawings and paintings have been gathered from primary and secondary images recreating the large-scale forms through application of flat and bold colour, combined with a wide approach to mark making. Inspiration has come from Tropical World Leeds, Wythenshaw Hot House and Nature Gardens. Original paintings were worked up on a large scale before taking through to the computer to rework digitally, translated using colour palettes including light and airy soft hues of greens, dusty pinks and pastel shades through to deep hues of rusts, deep greens, clarets and golden yellows.
As a graduate of Textiles and Surface Design you will have a range of career options to pursue within the creative industries. We have an exciting array of projects which enable you to gain real experience of freelance and studio practice. During her second-year Leanna Kershaw won a live project competition with Gohar Textiles, designing bedding suitable for the domestic market, and is now embarking on a career with them as a Junior Designer. ‘Macro Aesthetic’ is a collection inspired by the life, structures and flamboyant colour palette of the micro colonies and organisms living on Coral Reefs. Leanna has created artworks inspired by the intricate elements found within the marine ecosystem; producing original hand-drawn artworks for a range of designs which captures the essence of the deep blue marine life.

A keen interest in history and architecture has inspired Rebecca’s work, informed by research visits to the Duomo in Milan, Matthias Church in Budapest, York Minster and National Trust properties including Lyme Park. The Gothic and Classical style of these buildings has provided her with a broad range of inspiration, from the detailed exterior stone work, to the tiled and patterned interiors. In response to the traditional aspects of ecclesiastical architecture Rebecca has experimented with wooden floorboards using laser etching and engraving, 3D elements and image transfers. Aiming towards the high-end interior furnishings and wallpaper market, her work shows design featured on a range of products including repeat wallpaper, fabric lengths and resistant materials. Rebecca has undertaken workplacements at Standfast and Barracks, supporting preparations for Heimtex Frankfurt, Trade Show and was shortlisted for the I-Dott Wallpaper competition. More recently Rebecca’s work was selected by Turnbull prints for development into printed sample fabrics, using their specialist hand printing factory in Thailand, where they print specifically for the higher end of the furnishings market. Bespoke ceramic tiles contrast soft furnishing fabrics exploring a range of media and materials which reflect Rebecca’s applied design working style.

Visiting cacti farms within the UK was the starting point for Leanne Bellis to create a collection of womenswear and swim fabrics aimed at Spring/ Summer 2019. An eclectic selection of prints in 3 colourways directs the brief towards highly commercial designs that can lend themselves well to both apparel and homewares products. During her studies Leanne was able to produce a professional based portfolio in order to source work placement opportunities at both Lemon Ribbon Designs in the UK and Liz Cassella New York.

Georgia Ragnall also undertook a work placement with Lemon Ribbon and has been particularly inspired with creating designs for the childrens market, spanning both fashion and interior collections. Her work focusses on illustrative qualities which are taken towards individual products including stationery, greetings cards, cushions, panels and clothing. Imagery collected from forests, woodland creatures, camping equipment and summer camp activities such as kayaking, hiking and more. For adults and children alike Wilderness explores our return to nature within the 21st century, balancing technology with a time for escape and reflection outdoors. Inspired by the bright and vibrant colours found in Kew Gardens, Ameyo has developed a body of work that explores a range of techniques and processes for the domestic furnishings market. Taking hand-drawn and painted imagery of a range of flowers from her visit to Kew, into traditional and contemporary processes, Ameyo has explored screen printing, digital embroidery and surface print to develop a range of half-drop and block repeat fabrics and designs for wallcoverings. This wider collection, inspired by iconic designers such as Josef Frank, consists of panel designs and cushions which employ both machine and digital embroidery, printed samples developed into panel designs, lampshades and cushions. Cotton velvet lampshades have been digitally printed and laser-etched to allow light to shine through.
