AUG 2018 – JUL 2019

WELCOME Welcome to the Unicorn’s 2018/19 season. We are proud once again to present a full and diverse programme that showcases the most exciting theatre from the UK and abroad with something for everyone – from 6 months to adult. We are also delighted to be touring our work extensively in the coming year both in the UK and internationally. Here at the Unicorn, it’s central to our mission to offer the highest quality work for the lowest possible prices. We know that education budgets are being slashed across the country but we strongly believe every child has a right to experience the exhilaration of live theatrical performance. That is why we are proud to say that for the sixth year running, our schools’ prices remain at a standstill £10 per ticket. We are reaching the widest possible audiences through our extensive ticket subsidy schemes and inclusive community projects. And with every show we offer a varied range of workshops and activities to engage all ages. We hope that you will join us at the Unicorn this season. Try something new or unexpected with us – you might find that it makes you see the world in a different way… We look forward to welcoming you. The Unicorn

THE END OF EDDY A Unicorn / Untitled Projects Production

CAN WE CREATE OUR OWN FREEDOM?

Based on the book En Finir Avec Eddy Bellegueule by Édouard Louis Adapted by Pamela Carter Directed by Stewart Laing ‘My crime wasn’t doing something. My crime was being something. Being different in a way everyone else could see.’ Born into poverty in an isolated village in rural France, a boy grows up amongst hard men and women living hard and violent lives. Bullied relentlessly for being gay, this is the story of Eddy’s struggle to understand who he is, who he might become, and of his fight to escape.

Age guide: 16 – adult Contains explicit sexual references and frequent use of strong language Duration: Approx 1 hr 30 mins Unicorn Lates / Events / Schools Activities 2

By Katrin Lange Translated by Purni Morell Directed by Cressida Brown Here, where pleasant cottages stand colourful in the friendly village and a gentle breeze wafts through the air, children play in the square laughing and shouting – but Icarus, oldest son of the builder Daedalus, does not play with them. He sits looking out over the sea and thinks about his father. His country is in turmoil. His family is falling apart. His father, far away across the sea, is forced to work for the tyrannical King Minos. What can one boy do against injustice? Will he save his family? Will he save his father? Will he save himself?

Directed by Purni Morell Conducted by Valentina Peleggi

English National Opera and the Unicorn join forces for the very first time to create a new production of Purcell’s powerful and emotional masterpiece, Dido and Aeneas, for teenagers and adults.

Directed by the Unicorn’s former Artistic Director Purni Morell and conducted by ENO’s Valentina Peleggi, this contemporary production will be an incredible first experience for some, and for others a chance to see a familiar and much-loved opera in a new light. Age guide: 11 – adult Duration: Approx 1 hr 15 mins Sung in English

AESOP’S FABLES A Unicorn Production

ALL THE MOST INTERESTING THINGS ARE AMBIGUOUS. Directed by Justin Audibert As far as we know, Aesop was a slave and storyteller who lived in ancient Greece between 620 and 564 BC. But although we don’t know much about the man himself, we do still have over 725 of his stories – passed down from generation to generation. We considered doing all 725 fables and then thought better of it. What we’ve done instead is asked a few of our favourite writers to select one fable and to re-tell it for today’s audience. We’re presenting two versions of the results: one for ages 4 – 7 and one for ages 8 – 12. Accompanied by events and workshops, this is a celebration of young and old, ancient and new – a tribute to how fresh, bold and vibrant the classics remain today. Age guide: 4 – 7 and 8 – 12 Duration: Approx 1 hr

FOR TEACHERS We work closely with schools to ensure that every visit is meaningful and enriching. We create free resource materials to introduce you and your pupils to themes and ideas within the show, including interviews with the creative team and ideas and outlines for how to use drama techniques for creative exploration. We also offer in-school workshops from £120 a session and free CPD sessions for teachers to help unpack the play and the resources further. We do everything we can to help schools make a trip to us: all of our prices are heavily subsidised. We actively support schools who wish to make creative learning a core part of the school ethos through our Unicorn Schools Club membership scheme (lower rate tickets from £7 – £8.50 per pupil). And we offer additional subsidy to schools in financial need where there is a high level of free school meals and pupil premium funding. Visit unicorntheatre.com/schools or email schools@unicorntheatre.com for more information. Where we can, we also love to visit schools – let us know if you would like to meet us!

UNICORN COMMUNITY We ensure that our doors are open to everyone, and that our building represents the diverse and tolerant city we want to live in. Throughout the year we run bespoke projects with young people and their families from across London, from a huge range of cultures and communities.

22

Image ŠiBRODIEfoto

Over the next year we are continuing our ongoing programme with young mums and their babies. We are working closely to develop the skills and interests of our Young Creators. And we are undertaking projects with young refugees, elders and many more friends and neighbours. To find out more visit unicorntheatre/community

YOUR ROLE ‘I don’t want this week ever to end! After this week at the Unicorn creating our own shows in the theatre, we don’t need anyone to believe in us – we’ll believe in ourselves!’ At Risk Young Participant For the past 70 years, the Unicorn has been seeking out great artists, writers and directors to create theatre that is thought-provoking, inspiring and that opens minds and imaginations. But behind the scenes, we work hard to make theatre accessible to the widest possible community. We seek out schools who can’t afford to attend and we enrich visits through workshops and long-term partnerships. Each year, over 10% of our tickets are part- or fully-subsidised for thousands of young people and their families. Through bespoke projects we work with excluded, vulnerable and under-represented groups from our communities: young mums, refugees, young carers, those with disabilities and others. The impact can be life-changing. As a registered charity, we need to raise £550,000 every year in addition to ticket sales in order to keep our doors open. Make this the year that you choose to support the Unicorn and help us touch the lives of even more children. There are a number of ways to get involved. You can support our 70th anniversary Pass It On initiative by buying a ticket that will support a young person’s visit to the Unicorn. You can become a Member from just £60 a year, donate online or become a corporate supporter through your business. unicorntheatre.com/SupportUs development@unicorntheatre.com 020 7645 0527

MAKE A DAY OF IT!

Our Unicornershop is always open an hour before each performance and 30 minutes after. This is your one-stop shop for ethically sourced refreshments and light snacks, toys, books and gifts – all at pocket money prices. Pre-show and interval treats, packages and show-themed merchandise can also be bought online along with your tickets. There are plenty of family-friendly food options nearby, from supermarkets to coffee shops, restaurants and Borough Market. We’re also close to the river (and some fun fountains!), a park with a small playground and visitor attractions such as the Fashion & Textile Museum, HMS Belfast and the Tate Modern (around a 20 minute walk along the river).
