AUG 2017 – JUL 2018
WELCOME TO OUR 70TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON Theatre for children has changed beyond recognition since the Unicorn was founded in 1947. But Caryl Jenner’s founding philosophy still applies – the theatre you will see here this season is no different from what you might expect at any other theatre; in quality, in writing, in production values, we aim to be the very best. The only difference between us and anyone else is: our audiences are young. When I’m putting together a season, I imagine the people who will come and I choose the shows that excite me, that in some way feel exceptional or fresh. My hope is always that you will love them too, and be as excited by the performance as I was by the original idea. I believe that children and adults share something fundamental, which is that none of us knows what tomorrow holds. That’s why the plays in this season all address some aspect of that unknown, asking questions about the world we live in and how it could be different. Everyone I’ve ever met believes the world can be better than it is, and I think that’s why we gather at the theatre, a place where we are both individuals and at the same time a small society imagining a different possibility for everyone. I hope you will join us in celebrating our anniversary season and that you will visit us often. Tell us what you felt, whether you agree, and most of all, I hope you enjoy each new enquiry. I hope that you and your family and friends find plenty of reasons in the following pages to visit us over the coming months.

OTHELLO A Unicorn Production
IS BEING YOURSELF ENOUGH? By Ignace Cornelissen Inspired by William Shakespeare Directed by Ian Nicholson
Othello, the bold, brash, confident solider, and Desdemona, the Senator’s daughter, are truly in love – but not everyone is happy about it. And that is where the problem begins and tolerance ends. Inspired by William Shakespeare’s great tragedy, this is a modern, playful and inspired play by Belgian playwright Ignace Cornelissen (Henry the Fifth, The Hunting Lodge) that brings the story of Othello to life for younger audiences and reflects on the nature of relationships, friendships and how our flaws and feelings can blind us to the truth. BEGINNERS A Unicorn Production
LET’S DISCUSS THIS LIKE ADULTS. Written and directed by Tim Crouch
Beginners bɪˈɡɪnəs / plural noun 1. a person who has just started to do or learn something. 2. a call given to prepare to start a play. Beginners tells the story of three families trapped in a waterlogged holiday cottage over summer. The children are bored. The adults are down the pub. So far so normal. Renowned award-winning writer and director Tim Crouch (National Theatre, Royal Court, Unicorn) presents this joyous and imaginative new play for families everywhere. Beginners is an exquisite, funny and moving story that reminds us that the adult we’ll become – and the child we were – is always with us. An extraordinary show for everyone who has ever wanted to be understood. Age guide: 9 – adult Duration: Approx 1 hr 30 mins Accessible Shows / Schools Activities / Unicorn Lates

FIVE EASY PIECES A CAMPO / IIPM production
‘Rau’s piece explores how we construct personal identity at times of national trauma.’ The Guardian
POWER, THEATRE AND HUMANITY. By Milo Rau
Since 2012, the Unicorn has programmed a strand of work for adults that invites us to think about how children experience our society. This year’s show by highly regarded and controversial Swiss director, Milo Rau, deals with some of our greatest fears and taboos. In Five Easy Pieces, seven children aged 9 – 14 recreate the interviews and statements of those affected by Marc Dutroux, Belgium’s notorious serial killer. Moving and at times funny, this remarkable, sensitive and politically-charged show interrogates the darkest corners of society and questions our assumptions. Age guide: 14 – adult Duration: 1 hr 30 mins (no interval) In Dutch with English surtitles
14
This play refers to real life accounts from the Dutroux case which some audiences may find upsetting. Visit the webpage or contact the Box Office for more information.

YOUR ROLE ‘I don’t want this week ever to end! After this week at the Unicorn creating our own shows in the theatre, we don’t need anyone to believe in us – we’ll believe in ourselves!’ At Risk Young Participant For the past 70 years, the Unicorn has been seeking out great artists, writers and directors to create theatre that is thought-provoking, inspiring and that opens minds and imaginations. But behind the scenes, we work hard to make theatre accessible to the widest possible community. We seek out schools who can’t afford to attend and we enrich visits through workshops and long-term partnerships. Each year, over 10% of our tickets are partor fully-subsidised for thousands of young people and their families. Through bespoke projects we work with excluded, vulnerable and under-represented groups from our communities: young mums, refugees, young carers, those with disabilities and others.
The impact can be life-changing. As a registered charity, we need to raise £550,000 every year in addition to ticket sales in order to keep our doors open. Make this the year that you choose to support the Unicorn and help us touch the lives of even more children. There are a number of ways to get involved. You can support our 70th anniversary Pay It Forward initiative by buying a ticket that will support a young person’s visit to the Unicorn. You can become a Member from just £60 a year, donate online or become a corporate supporter through your business. unicorntheatre.com/SupportUs development@unicorntheatre.com 020 7645 0527

MAKE A DAY OF IT! Our Unicornershop is always open an hour before each performance and 30 minutes after. This is your one-stop shop for ethically sourced refreshments and light snacks, toys, books and gifts – all at pocket money prices. Pre-show and interval treats, packages and show-themed merchandise can also be bought online along with your tickets. There are plenty of family-friendly food options nearby, from supermarkets to coffee shops, restaurants and Borough Market. We’re also close to the river (and some fun fountains!), a park with a small playground and visitor attractions such as the Fashion & Textile Museum, HMS Belfast and the Tate Modern (around a 20 minute walk along the river).
