AUG 2019 – JUL 2020
THE WORLD AS IT IS – OR AS WE MIGHT MAKE IT? I am delighted to share my first season as Artistic Director here at the Unicorn. This has been an incredible opportunity to programme the playwrights, artists and theatre companies that I love, and to consider deeply what this theatre stands for and why it is so important that children have a creative environment in which to be challenged, engaged and inspired. There is nowhere more exciting or relevant to be creating theatre in London right now. So my first season is themed around imagining other possibilities – from dystopian visions to flights of pure imaginative fancy to exploring the untameable freedom of the natural world. It’s also vital to me that everyone can visit us regardless of financial circumstance. Young people have a right to experience great art of the same quality that we adults seek for ourselves. It’s more urgent than ever to defend and champion children’s creative education and a creative and fulfilling life. In response to both the brutal cuts faced by schools and the uncertain political climate, we have maintained our £10 tickets for state-funded schools for the eighth consecutive year, alongside subsidising more school trips than ever before. Our new REACH community programme will also welcome refugee families, children in care and children living in poverty to experience the joys of live theatre. So our Pass It On scheme – where you can donate to enable another child to have the same great experience at the Unicorn as you and your family – is more important than ever. We very much look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful Tooley Street home and to sharing in our journey with you.

ANANSI A Unicorn Production
THE
SPIDER
THE GREATEST TALES EVER SPUN. Created and directed by Justin Audibert
People say that in a time long, long ago, animals walked on two feet and spoke with words, like we do. And back then it was known by everyone that the cleverest of all the animals in the kingdom was a spider – the infamous Anansi – the original trickster and the master spinner of yarns. But sometimes Anansi could be a little too clever for his own good… In celebration of Black History Month, these classic West African and Caribbean tales about the spider hoaxster are brought vividly to life in Artistic Director Justin Audibert’s newest production for the Unicorn. “THE BEST THING WE HAVE IS OUR IMAGINATION…” Based on the novel by Sally Gardner Adapted for the stage by Jemma Kennedy Directed by Jesse Jones
In a sinister 1950s Britain, the country is under the rule of the violent and oppressive Motherland. Dark government forces are at work. Spies and surveillance are everywhere, and the truth is difficult to discern. Meet our hero, Standish Treadwell. He is 15, he lives with his grandpa, and although his teachers are part of the regime, together he and grandpa are safe. But then one day, Standish’s best friend disappears. And suddenly all their lives are in terrible danger. Can Standish be the hero who will save them all? Live drawing, cameras and projection bring Sally Gardner’s dazzlingly original, award-winning novel to life, in this story about protecting the ones you love and having the courage to stand up for what you believe. OSCAR WILDE’S THE
CANTERVILLE
GHOST
GET INTO THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS... Adapted by Anthony Weigh Directed by Justin Audibert
This wonderfully witty, delightfully spooky retelling of Oscar Wilde’s 1887 comic novel is brought to life this Christmas with spine-tingling magic, spectacular illusions and ghoulish effects. Mr and Mrs Otis and their boisterous children arrive from America to move into Canterville Chase – a rather old, rather creepy Gothic mansion. Of course, like all the best old mansions, the Chase comes with its own ghost – the rather tormented Sir Simon Canterville. The spectral knight does his best to spook the trespassers from his ancestral home, but his ghostly machinations hold no fear for this rational modern family. Sir Simon succumbs to utter despair until he meets young Virginia Otis, who sees him for who he really is… Age guide: A festive family show for everyone aged 7 and over Duration: Approx 2 hrs (incl. interval)

THE WOLF, THE DUCK A Unicorn and New Perspectives Production
AND THE MOUSE INSIDE A MODERN FAIRYTALE. By Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen Adapted by Jack McNamara One day Mouse is gobbled up by a wolf. ‘Oh woe’ says Mouse, who fears this must be the end. But then we discover Duck, who was, until Mouse arrived, taking a nap. As it turns out, it’s pretty nice living inside the belly of the beast with a new friend. There’s delicious food, dancing and – better still – no more fear of being eaten! Meanwhile, outside in the forest, things aren’t quite as rosy for Wolf, who is being stalked by a hunter. Realising their fates are intertwined, Duck and Mouse hatch a winning plan… Join us this Christmas for the stage adaptation of Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen’s brilliantly subversive picture book, which finds joy and friendship in the darkest and most unusual of places. This brilliantly clear introduction to Julius Caesar is a unique and warmly engaging solo show about words and actions, art, protest and power. Imagine that robots are very much like humans, but maybe smarter, stronger and NEVER cross or tired or sad. Your best friend is a robot. Actor Guy Rhys (Aesop’s Fables, Not Now, Bernard) and director Sarah Argent (Seesaw, Scrunch, Baby Show) are teaming up to create this high-energy, enquiring, sci-fi inspired summer show, which asks us to consider what makes a human ‘human’ and a robot a robot. CRITICAL CONVERSATIONS As the world wakes up to the climate emergency, we want to hear what you, our young audiences, are feeling, thinking and saying. What changes are you making – at home, with your family, with your friends? What should adults and governments be doing to make a better world? We’ll be setting up a range of platforms to listen to young people and ask how we can help you make change happen – watch this space. In the meantime, email us at hello@unicorntheatre.com – we’d love to hear from you.
HELPING TEACHERS KEEP CREATIVITY AT THE HEART OF PUPILS’ LIVES We know that cuts are affecting schools across the country, and we applaud the teachers and schools who continue to go the extra mile to stand up for a rich and balanced education, finding ways to make creative learning and creative experiences part of pupils’ lives. We know that isn’t easy. We share your tenacity, belief and commitment to making a difference to young people. If you are a teacher who wants to make the arts core to your curriculum planning, we would love to hear from you to discuss how we can work together. If you are looking for creative professional development for your colleagues, to boost skills and confidence in using drama and creative learning approaches in the classroom, then we have free CPD sessions and resource packs that will help. We have also kept our prices at £10 for the eighth year for state-funded schools, and have introduced even more subsidy schemes to assist schools-in-need in order to help you to keep making trips to us. Make us your creative partner for the year ahead – we would love to work with you. Contact us at schools@unicorntheatre.com / 020 7645 0560 or visit unicorntheatre.com for more information.

INTRODUCING REACH – OUR NEW COMMUNITY PROGRAMME We want the work we do onstage to serve our widest possible community and reflect where we are. Through REACH we will be working with young people who are at risk, children and families who rely on food banks, and those who are excluded. Through specialist partnerships and projects we’ll offer free or heavily subsidised tickets, workshops and long-term creative projects that will open up new avenues for young people. We believe that everyone should have access to our programme, regardless of socio-economic barriers. As part of REACH, Phosphoros Theatre Company joins us as an Associate Company. They work solely with Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children and Refugees, and will be delivering their young company sessions in our building every week. We are also embarking on a new collaboration with Great Ormond Street Hospital to bring the special and unique energy of the Unicorn to young patients. And this is only the beginning… If this is something you want to be part of, email our REACH Community Officer, Lauren, to discuss further at lauren.larocque@unicorntheatre.com
HELP US REACH EVEN MORE YOUNG PEOPLE We need to raise £500,000 every year in order to keep doing what we do. In the last year alone we have distributed nearly 12,000 tickets to schools for free – or almost free – through the Unicorn Learning Programme with the support of our generous supporters and The McGrath Trust, run year-long projects with 30 partner schools and delivered Professional Development sessions for nearly 200 teachers. And now we want to be able to achieve the same impact for children in communities who have even less, through our redeveloped REACH community programme.
HOW CAN YOU HELP? Donate to Pass It On online or when buying tickets to our shows, to help give the gift of theatre to a child who wouldn’t otherwise be able to visit us. Come and talk to like-minded colleagues about the future of theatre. Dates throughout the year – see our website for details and to apply. Tickets £10 (limited availability).

MAKE A DAY OF IT! Our Unicornershop is always open an hour before and 30 minutes after each performance. This is your one-stop shop for ethically sourced refreshments and light snacks, toys, books and gifts – all at pocket money prices. Pre-show and interval treats, packages and show-themed merchandise can also be bought online along with your tickets. There are plenty of family-friendly food options nearby, from supermarkets to coffee shops, restaurants and Borough Market. We’re also close to the river (and some fun fountains!), a park with a small playground and visitor attractions such as the Fashion & Textile Museum, HMS Belfast and Tate Modern (around a 20-minute walk along the river).
