Unicorn Theatre Season Brochure | 2015 - 2016

Page 1

AUG 2015 – APR 2016

WELCOME 2015 sees the 10th anniversary of the Unicorn’s arrival on Tooley Street. We hope you will join us over the August Bank Holiday Weekend and throughout this season to celebrate. We are proud to bring you some incredible writers and theatre-makers, from Timberlake Wertenbaker and Tim Crouch to collaborations with Actors Touring Company and Kabinet K from Belgium. Our belief, that great theatre for children should have the same status as great theatre for adults, infuses every page in this brochure and we hope you will be as excited as we are by the range on offer. In 2016 I will also be curating On The Edge, a festival of international children’s theatre that will be held in Birmingham. Being always on the look out for the very best national and international work, I’m very excited to be able to bring our audiences some of my favourite artists and shows, both here at the Unicorn, for the festival and on tour. I hope that you find plenty in our season to tempt you and your family into the building.

By Marius von Mayenburg Translated by Maja Zade Directed by Ramin Gray Benjamin won’t do swimming at school. His mum thinks he’s on drugs or has body issues. This topical production follows Actors Touring Company’s highly acclaimed The Events, seen at the Young Vic last year. Wed 18 Nov – Sun 3 Jan A Unicorn / Sheffield Theatres / Dancing Brick production

A WINTRY TALE FULL OF WARMTH THIS CHRISTMAS. By Valentina Ceschi and Thomas Eccleshare Once upon a time there was a man and his wife who loved one another dearly, and although they were content and they lived happily there was just one thing they longed for: a child of their own. So one cold, white winter’s day, they sculpt a daughter out of snow and something magical and extraordinary happens.

This beautiful and inventive show by award-winning company Dancing Brick will transport you into the wintry world of this gorgeous Russian folktale. Age guide: 3+ Running time: Approx 50 mins

FAIRYTALE VILLAINS AS YOU’VE NEVER SEEN THEM BEFORE... Tue 3 Nov – Thu 24 Dec Book and Lyrics by Nancy Harris Music and Lyrics by Marc Teitler Story by Nancy Harris and Marc Teitler Directed by Purni Morell

Sure, I eat people’s grandmothers once in a while, but that doesn’t make me a bad person… it makes me a good villain. So you think that being bad is wrong? Think again. In fact, it’s actually fine – and absolutely necessary if that’s your job. Which it is for the likes of the Big Bad Wolf and Captain Hook. Thing is, how do you know who is really good at being bad and who is really bad at being good? Sometimes it’s a little hard to tell… Step into the real lives of the fairytales’ most villainous characters in this sublimely entertaining, larger-than-life new musical for children and adults that features live music onstage. This is sure to be the baddest musical in town! Age guide: for everyone aged 6 and over Duration: Approx 2 hrs (including an interval) Fairytale Fun £8

Teacher resources, CPD and in-school workshops available #BaddiesTheMusical
