Winston Churchill
Painting on the French Riviera Paul Rafferty, Foreword by HRH The Prince of Wales Discovering painting at the age of forty, Sir Winston Churchill revelled in his new pastime. He went on to produce over 550 paintings, with more than 130 of them on the French Riviera. The fellow artist and Riviera resident Paul Rafferty has tracked down many of the locations Churchill used in Provence, an area the great man so aptly called ‘paintatious'. Many of these locations are newly discovered and his 'fearless impressions' stand to illustrate how Churchill captured them on canvas. Paul Rafferty, then a musician, moved from London to California in 1989, writing, recording and performing with Rod Stewart, Peter Frampton, Pat Benatar and Johnny Hallyday among others. Later, as an artist, he moved to the French Riviera in 2008, where he became familiar with – and fascinated by – Winston Churchill’s paintings in Provence. A highly successful artist in his own right, Rafferty has exhibited around the world and is represented by the Portland Gallery in London. He also has his own gallery in St Paul de Vence on the Riviera where he lives with his wife and three children.

Dangerous to Show Byron and His Portraits
Geoffrey Bond and Dr Christine Kenyon Jones ‘Don’t look at him. He is dangerous to look at,’ said Lady Liddell to her daughter in 1817. Handsome, charismatic, aristocratic and famously ‘mad, bad and dangerous to know’, Lord Byron (1788-1824) is one of the most captivating and recognisable figures of the Romantic Age. His face, figure and appearance added greatly to the appeal of his poetry and the close association of the man with his poetic creations encouraged a wide range of artists to create portraits during his lifetime and to memorialise him after his heroic death in Greece. This book explores Byron’s life through the intriguing stories behind these images and for the first time reproduces in colour all the key paintings, miniatures, sculptures, drawings and sketches, with a selection of prints, cartoons, engravings and other representations. It uses Byron’s own wit with words to recount his attempts to manage his own image through the way he was presented in his portraits, as well as through fashion, weight control and the disguise of his lameness. Geoffrey Bond is a polymath, having had careers as a solicitor, businessman and broadcaster. His special interests now are the creation and promotion of education initiatives for young people in the heritage, law and engineering sectors. He has written and lectured on heritage matters and chaired a variety of heritage organisations at regional and national level. A collector and antiquarian, living in an historic house, he is a Fellow and former member of the council of the Antiquaries Society of London. He has one of the best collections of Byron first editions and Byron memorabilia in the country. Dr Christine Kenyon Jones is a writer and lecturer, and an expert on Lord Byron and the Romantic period. She has been published widely on Byron’s image and his portraiture; on his politics and his pronunciation; on his disability and his dieting; on his relationship with his publisher John Murray, his religious background and his afterlife as a science-fiction character. 5

A King Among Ministers
Fifty Years in Parliament Recalled Tom King Tom King’s personal memoirs range across a life of exceptional activity and interest. Aged nineteen, he found himself commanding a military company against Mau Mau terrorists in Kenya; at thirty he became the youngest ever general manager in a major printing and packaging group, in charge of a factory with a staff of 700 and dealing with nine different trade unions. Elected as an MP in 1970, nine years later he took through the legislation that transformed London’s vast derelict docklands into the thriving business district of Canary Wharf. Subsequently his five Secretary of State roles saw him carrying through the law that gave union members the right to a secret ballot before a strike, then facing IRA terrorism and Unionist opposition when he launched what became the start of the peace process, then watching the fall of the Soviet Union and the Iron Curtain and being responsible for the massive UK deployment to help liberate Kuwait. Told with a sharp recollection of his fifty years in Parliament, Tom King’s memoirs cover a particularly interesting period of history and his part in shaping the events that led up to the world we live in now. Tom King, Lord King of Bridgwater CH, was Secretary of State for five different departments in the Cabinets of Margaret Thatcher and John Major. He was Secretary of State for Employment during the miners’ strike, and for Northern Ireland during one of the worst periods of terrorism; he was responsible for launching the Anglo-Irish Agreement, a controversial initiative that helped start the peace process. Later, when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, King was responsible for the biggest deployment of British troops and heavy armour since World War II. He was appointed by John Major as first Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee, overseeing MI5, MI6, and GCHQ, and on the change of government was reappointed by Tony Blair. 6

Vanity Project
A Tale of Fashion and Celebrity Styled by Dave Thomas Dave Thomas, Introduction by Lionel Ritchie, Afterword by John Legend In 1988 Dave Thomas was an unemployed plumber with a seemingly impossible dream: to enter the world of fashion. Dave worked weekends washing dishes in a café and evenings as a lavatory attendant in a West End nightclub, and in every spare moment he hammered on the doors of fashion editors, until one of them opened a tiny crack. Having seized the chance to be an unpaid dogsbody at Riva magazine, he found his niche in the contemporary music scene, working with legends of style Judy Blame and Isabella Blow, dressing artists like Lisa Stansfield, Boy George and Kylie Minogue. In the intervening decades the business of styling has ascended from the pavement to the penthouse. What began as kids playing dress-up with ribbons and safety-pins has evolved to become the backbone of a multi-billion-dollar style and clothing industry. Dave Thomas is now one of Hollywood’s most successful stylists. Vanity Project takes a behind-the-curtain look at the glamour, the tantrums, the comradeship, the rivalries, and the surprisingly hard graft of celebrity styling. Dave Thomas always dreamed of a glamorous life in fashion. He moved to London and became the youngest Fashion Editor in the world for British Esquire. He ultimately moved on to edit fashion at Vogue Homme, Vanity Fair, and Interview, and his work has since been published in a raft of international magazines. With clients that include John Legend, Henry Golding, Calvin Harris, Kane Brown, David Guetta, and Lionel Richie, Dave Thomas is considered one of the pioneers of celebrity styling.

Light and Love
The Remarkable Developments of Julia Margaret Cameron and Mary Hillier Kirsty Stonell Waler When fourteen-year-old Mary Hillier delivered a message to Julia’s door little did she know what her life would become. Beginning as Julia’s parlour maid Mary went on to become the photographer’s leading model and the focus of the artist’s creative passion. For Julia, Mary personified the heavenly qualities of her quiet corner of England. For Mary, Julia’s influence would echo throughout her life. This is a biography of two women who experienced beauty, love, loss and fame, and created photographs that, in Julia’s own words ‘should electrify you with delight and startle the world’. Spanning the French Revolution until the 1930s, Light and Love tells the story of a rare partnership of a pioneer and her muse and how their relationship would change the course of both of their lives. Kirsty Stonell Walker’s research on Pre-Raphaelite women spanned a quarter of a century, the rest of which was Pre-Raphaelite Girl Gang (2017). A fascination for the lives of the women of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, Kirsty wrote a biography of notorious artist’s model Fanny Cornforth Stunner: The Fall and Rise of Fanny Cornforth in 2006. Since 2011, she has written a blog, The Kissed Mouth, where she publishes original research on the many models of the Pre-Raphaelites. She has also written two novels about Victorian artists as well as giving talks to art groups and museums on her subject.

Lion
Mar Adlington Lion follows internationally collected artist Mark Adlington’s three-year mission to find lions in six very different habitats across East and Southern Africa. The resulting body of stunning paintings, drawings and sketchbooks represent the countless months of patient waiting, observation and interaction which have given the artist a unique insight into this most beautiful of big cats. With written contributions from frontline lion conservationists, without whose help and support the project would have been impossible, this is a book which will delight and inform art and nature lovers alike. Mark Adlington has always travelled extensively in search of wildlife; his principal obsession since early childhood. He works extensively on site before returning to the studio to recreate the immediacy of his responses to the animals, using various and often mixed media. Mark exhibits regularly both in London and abroad, and is represented by the John Martin Gallery in Mayfair, London, and by the Bridgeman Art Library, which whom he is one of their most downloaded contemporary artists. Mark Adlington’s fluid watercolour otters were used to illustrate Unicorn’s bestselling centenary edition of Gavin Maxwell’s Ring of Bright Water, while in Painting the Ice Bear, his long held ambition to visit the arctic is documented in a lavishly illustrated book of polar bear studies and paintings.

Only Us
A Celebration of Humanity Stuart Dunn Only Us is a comprehensive, photographic portrait of humanity; a tapestry of mankind. As a species we are incredibly diverse, yet remarkably similar in so many ways. Our ability to adapt is unrivalled; from the four corners of the planet there are few places we have not succeeded in inhabiting. Only Us is a unique look at what essentially makes us human. Intended to expand the appreciation of its audience, drawing upon parallels we all have, transporting the viewer from their living room to far flung lands full of colour, inspiration and natural beauty. Stuart was born in Newcastle 1977. He studied at the Northern Media School where he gained a Masters degree in Screen Arts. Upon completion, Stuart embarked on his first expedition with fellow student and friend Pandula. On a shoestring budget and completely unpaid, they travelled to the Tamil Tiger controlled regions of Northern Sri Lanka in an attempt to tell the story of the civil war that had raged for over twenty years, and give voice to the 500,000 refugees displaced by the conflict; a true baptism by fire, professionally. Since then Stuart has become a multi-award-winning photographer and filmmaker. His assignments have taken him around the world, photographing a wide range of topics, from critically endangered animals to remote tribes. He regularly works for the prestigious BBC Natural History Unit, as well as National Geographic and Discovery Channel, filming internationally acclaimed documentaries that are screened to audiences across the globe.

Truth and Beauty
The Art of Sophie Chang Ian Strathcarron Sophie Chang has been actively pursuing her artistic exploration in recent years. Her works incorporate Western painting style into the freehand style (or xieyi) of Chinese ink wash paintings, and integrate expressive use of colours into metaphysical spirituality. Chang has focused her studies on ink wash and calligraphy in recent years, and has employed the techniques of collage to merge Eastern subtleties of ink in her works with Western influences. Sophie Chang’s artistic journey progresses from realistic imagery to spiritual abstract languages; and through her works she expresses her inner maturity and clarity (“a mountain seen remains a mountain being”). Ch’an philosophy looks through the land of the soulful heart, mirroring the spirit of compassion and universal love through years of life experiences. Ian Strathcarron is the author of the travel biographies Vasco da Gama's Grand Crusade, Joy Unconfined! Lord Byron's Grand Tour Retoured, the Mark Twain travel trilogy Innocence and War, The Indian Equator and Mississippi Mayhem and the philosophy works Living with Life and Mysticism and Bliss. He is also Chairman of Unicorn Publishing Group and a mediator with the cultural property ADR service Art Resolve Ltd.

A Voyage Through Time
The Masis Collection of Horological Masterpieces Richard Chadwic The Masis Collection is one of the most comprehensive privately owned assemblages of pocket watches in the world. Focusing on the watch as a work of art, it encompasses over four hundred years of the watchmakers', enamellers' and goldsmiths' craft. This lavishly illustrated book takes the reader not only on a journey through the development of the mechanical watch, but for the first time, shows the artistic progression of watch case decoration in the fashionable styles that walked hand in hand with wider European artistic movements. Beginning with some of the earliest surviving portable timepieces, the Masis Collection includes watches that can be considered among the greatest European miniature works of art to ever be created. The collection is especially rich in examples of gloriously painted Geneva enamels, particularly those of the Huaud family working in the baroque period. Its strength also lies in the breathtakingly beautiful enamel watches made for export to China and Turkey in the early years of the 19th century. This book aims to inform the reader not only of the richness and diversity of the Masis collection itself but to adequately display some of the watchmaking masterpieces that have enthralled their owners down the centuries. Richard Chadwick is one of the most renowned watch specialists in Europe and a consultant to Christie’s Geneva. His career began over thirty years ago in the Clock and Watch Department of Sotheby’s in London. In 1994, Richard joined Christie’s London, where he became head of department and was widely recognised as a pioneer in the development and promotion of specialist watch auctions. With a particular knowledge of pocket watches and traditional watchmaking, in 2015, he was chosen by Vacheron Constantin to describe for its public unveiling, the Reference 57260, the most complicated watch in the world. 18

Sovereign of the Isles
How the British Isles Were Won by the Crown Iain Milligan This is the story of how the territory of the British nation was won and parts of it were lost. It was the English who by conquest, treaty and ruthless colonisation won sovereignty over what are known as the British Islands – the United Kingdom, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. It was England’s aggressive predations which led to the formation of the uneasy union with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, perhaps explaining the commonplace confusion between “English” and “British”. The looser federal relationship with the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands perhaps explains why they are happier with their lot. Iain Milligan was privately educated read law at Cambridge. He practised throughout his professional life at the Bar, taking silk in 1991 and retiring recently. He is married with three children and an ever-growing number of grandchildren. He divides his time between his home in London, a farm in Scotland and a chalet in the Alps. He is passionate about trees (thousands of which he has nurtured over the years), walking (particularly in the Alps) and his books, of which he is an avid reader.

Under the Olive Tree
Memories and Flavours of Puglia Anna Maggio Many of the recipes in this book were never written down – they were demonstrated by mothers to their daughters. In the same way the reader, trying out the recipes, can use their own imaginations, but remembering that Italians have very specific ways of cooking, varying from region to region. Puglia is known for the quality of its olives, vegetables and fruit: the traditional recipes use these ingredients, cooked simply and deliciously. Each season is different and the recipes passed from generation to generation celebrate, rather than disguise, the intense flavours and colours of the raw ingredients. This is not a simple cookery book; it is enhanced by beautiful illustrations in pencil and ink by Emma Hobbins. Anna Maggio was born in a small village in Puglia, Southern Italy. Her early childhood memories are an essential part of her life, and the simple and traditional recipes inherited from her mother sparkle with love and flavour. When she was ten, her family migrated to Milan where she was educated. She moved to London in the 1970s, where she married a musician and had two children, who are both musicians. Anna shares her time between London and her trullo 'Il Paradiso' in Puglia, described by Rick Stein as ‘an amazingly atmospheric house set in an olive grove’.

Shepherds, Sheep, Hirelings and Wolves An Anthology of Christian Currents in English Life since 550 AD Tim Williams For many today the Church stands picturesquely in the background of modern life, but its timehonoured place has always been firmly in the foreground; it has been intimately woven into the unfolding fabric of English society and culture for one and a half thousand years. This may be largely lost to view, but the legacy is everywhere. The people ideally placed to bring this past to life – what it stood for, what it achieved, as well as the upheavals it has caused – are those whose first-hand stories speak directly to us. This anthology has assembled a crowd of witnesses, starting from Christianity’s rugged, pioneering times when its role in the shaping of England was so influential, continuing through the great flowerings of enlightenment and times of turbulence, right up to this present, less certain age. These are the voices of saints and sinners, dignitaries and dissidents, shrewd observers and ordinary parishioners. Tim Williams grew up in and around Cambridge, where he went on to study Classics and English at Trinity College. His teaching career started in York and was largely spent at Bedales School in Hampshire, where he became housemaster. He subsequently had a psychotherapy practice in London for fifteen years. His main interests are literature, cultural history, music and the countryside. He is married, has one son and a fine spread of stepchildren and grandchildren; he now lives between the West Country and London.

Time to Heal
Tales of a Country Doctor Michael Dion Time to Heal is the thirty year tale of a country doctor, Dr Michael Dixon, who when he started was an intrinsic part of the family and community. It follows his progress from a young doctor determined to prove himself to the older doctor developing new healing methods to fill the gaps in his medicine; gaps that required doctors to have good intuition, resourcefulness and nerves of steel. The stories, sometimes sad, sometimes funny, often terrifying and always colourful also illustrate the central importance of human relationships. But there is a sting in this tale. Today’s GPs are stressed and far from satisfied in their work. The personal doctor whom we all knew and trusted has all but vanished. This betrayal is a toxic mix of vested interests, bureaucratic ineptitude and systematic neglect. Time to Heal proposes urgent solutions that would restore the family doctor in a modern context and release his untapped potential as guardian of health and healing for the whole community. Dr Michael Dixon has been a country GP in Devon for thirty-five years. His surgery, now called 'The Culm Valley Integrated Centre for Health', has its own café, health garden and complementary therapists with the same ethos of involving patients and the community that is described in this book. In 2010 he founded the College of Medicine, which explores approaches to health and healing beyond drugs and procedures. He holds a number of academic and honorary positions including Visiting Professor at University College (London) and The University of Westminster (London). He has co-authored several books including The Human Effect (2000). He spends his free time working in the garden or fishing by his house on the river.

Cadogan
The Lives, Loves and Legacy of a Chelsea Family Tamsin Perrett Celtic chieftains emerging from the mists of ancient Wales, the ‘battle-keen’ Cadogans play their part at Blenheim alongside Marlborough, on board Pellew’s Indefatigable, with Wellington at Mondego Bay and Vittoria; at Balaklava and Sevastapol; at Ypres, Gallipoli and El Alamein. But opening the family archives – private letters, diaries and albums – we also find multilingual spies, evangelical clergymen, watercolour artists and society ladies who defy convention for love; illegitimacy, duels and gambling. There are diplomats, courtiers and confidantes. They share their stories with institutions from Chelsea Physic Garden and the British Museum to the British Olympic Association and Chelsea Football Club; from the Gaiety Theatre and the Jockey Club to the United Nations and the BBC. Woven throughout is the parallel history of Chelsea: a riverside farmland estate transformed into a visionary Georgian new town, and again into the recognisable red-brick of Pont Street Dutch, surviving riots and near-bankruptcy to become a thriving London community. Told with affection and humour, interweaving world events and private dramas over a thousand years, this book brings to life the story of one family that is also to the story of the British Isles. Tamsin Perrett is a writer and editor with a particular interest in cultural history. She studied at the University of Exeter and Winchester School of Art; after learning her craft at Thames & Hudson and Phaidon Press, Tamsin gained additional experience at the National Portrait Gallery and Frieze Art Fairs, and with boutique publisher Violette Editions. Since 2009 Tamsin has worked independently, as a specialist in pairing words and pictures for such internationally renowned public institutions as the Victoria and Albert Museum and Hayward Gallery, and select private and commercial clients. This is her second book about the Cadogan family and estate, following Cadogan: The Heart of Chelsea (2016). 29

For Valour is produced with support from the Army Museums Ogilby Trust The Army Museums Ogilby Trust is a charitable organisation which exists to support the Regimental and Corps museums of the British Army. We represent over 140 collections across the United Kingdom, offering funding, training, specialist advice and advocacy. The Army Museums Ogilby Trust was founded in 1954 by Colonel Robert J L Ogilby DSO DL TD. Having served with the London Scottish Regiment during the First World War, Colonel Ogilby’s experiences made him a passionate believer in the power of regimental identity on a British soldier’s fighting spirit and sense of belonging. His Trust was set up to support the rich heritage of the individual Regiments and Corps through the objects, archives and stories which are represented within the network of Army museums. Originally focusing on research and publications, the Trust has expanded since its founding in response to the needs of the network. In the early 1990s a grant giving programme was established and introduced, and further investment was made in providing training and specialist support. We exist to help with the long-term care and support of the rich military and social history represented within the many Army museums across the UK. www.armymuseums.org.uk 31

Bluebottle Goes to War
Peter Sellers & the RAF Gang Shows PJ Brownsword Peter Sellers was one of the biggest stars of the 1960s and 70s. His career began with characters such as Bluebottle on BBC radio’s The Goon Show and who achieved global fame as Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther series. What is less well known is that he served in the Royal Air Force Entertainment Units (known as Gang Shows) for over three years. Now, for the first time, this story can be told, a tale of the formation and education of his remarkable talents, as well as a small corner of Second World War history that seems uniquely British (groups of servicemen – and women sent around the world with hampers full of theatrical props and costumes, to rally the troops in distant outposts of Empire). This book reveals previously unknown film footage, photos, performances, broadcasts and recordings, from the very beginning of Sellers’ career. PJ Brownsword was born in Sussex and studied music history at Oxford, with an avid interest in research for local history publications as a student. With interests of photography, cars and cricket these are by coincidence also listed as Sellers’ hobbies in “Who’s Who”, 1967.

The Story of the 5th Bn Coldstream Guards 1944–1945 Catain Jocelyn Pereira Jocelyn Pereira’s vivid and colourful narrative of the 5th Battalion’ Coldstream Guards advance from Normandy to Cuxhaven in 1944–45 is a priceless piece of regimental history and a tribute to those who served in that final, testing phase of the war. It is a story of war, an intensely human endeavour, with its bursts of extreme activity interspersed with long periods of relative inactivity; with its highs and lows, good times and bad. It is a story of Guardsmen, of professionalism and discipline in the most demanding of circumstances, of initiative and resourcefulness, of determination and stubbornness, of fortitude and stoicism in adversity, of comradeship and consideration for others, of humour and unbreakable morale, of extraordinary gallantry and sacrifice. With a light touch, a dose of irreverence, modesty and understatement, and an evidently healthy disregard for dress regulations, Jocelyn Pereira captures that enduring Coldstream spirit. A Distant Drum also contains useful appendices for the historian, these include: a Roll of Honour, citations for awards and medals and lists of orders of battle throughout the campaign. Jocelyn Pereira 1920-1985, came from a distinguished Anglo Portuguese family, his father was Sir Cecil Pereira, a Coldstream Major General from the First World War. He served as the Intelligence officer of the 5th Battalion Coldstream Guards in 1944-45. His book A Distant Drum was first published in 1948. After the war he trained as a geologist.

The Reconstruction of Ypres A walk through history
Dominie Dendooven Jan Dewilde During the First World War the old medieval City of Ypres was the centre of one of the most notorious battlefields of war: the Ypres Salient. As early as 22nd November 1914, the most famous monuments of the town, the Cloth Hall and St Martin’s Church, were ablaze. Over the following four years, the entire town centre would be wiped off the map. In the winter of 19181919, a man on a horse was able to look right across the town. There remained just a few houses more or less still upright here and there. During the war, the whole population of Ypres fled or, from May 1915, was forcibly evacuated. But the first residents were already returning several weeks before the armistice. Those willing to return found themselves living in a totally destroyed town where all but nothing remained. They used fragments of the debris and abandoned war machinery to build their first homes. Ten years after the armistice, it looked like the town had never been witness to any war. Practically all houses had been rebuilt. Today Ypres is generally considered one of the best examples of post-conflict reconstruction. Full of stories of resilience and regeneration, this informative book and guide to the city – takes you by the most typical examples of Ypres’ postwar architecture, but also shows the most striking deviations.

In Which They Served
The stories of five men and women of the Great War as told by their medals Richard Cullen There are many books about Great War heroes. Relatively few are written about survivors and even fewer detail their whole lives or the wider context of their service. In this approach to the Great War, Richard Cullen takes the reader through history, led by the medals of five who served, each decorated for distinguished service; to wide-ranging political and military contexts, the personal side of their lives in war and peace, and the untold contributions that they made. What do the medals tell about the people who wore them? Where did they serve? How full were there lives? What wider historical and tactical contexts surrounded them? Readers will learn of aspects of service, battles and ways of making war that they might otherwise not have found in one place; philanthropy, volunteering, care for the injured, supplying an army, the dangerous monotony of the trenches, the Allied Intervention in the Russian civil war. Each of the subjects covered here led diverse lives. They served on land, in the air, and later at sea. Their stories are untold and open our eyes to the struggles that so many faced without formal recognition. In these varied and multi-layered accounts are tales of sadness, power struggle, modesty and compassion, bravery and a fulfilled post-war life. Richard Cullen caught the collecting bug as a young schoolboy while spending hours rummaging around junk shops. This included books about armies and battles, spawning a lifelong interest in military history. After forty years of international consulting work, he began to research the recipients of medals in his own collection and years of writing technical reports made way for crafting stories about them. Richard lives in Oxford where he is a member of a writers’ group and he also produces the Journal on behalf of the Orders & Medals Research Society. 36

Clouds of Love and War Rachel Billington Occasionally panoramic, more often intimate, in Clouds of Love and War author Rachel Billington balances a detailed and highly researched picture of the life of a Second World War Spitfire pilot with the travails and ambitions of a young woman too often on her own. The result is both a gripping story of war and a sensitive story of love, a love that struggles to survive. Eddie and Eva meet on the eve of the Second World War. Eddie only wants to be a flyer, to find escape in the clouds from his own complicated family. However, the Battle of Britain makes a pilot's life a dangerous way to flee reality. Eva has her own passionate longing: to become a painter. When Eva's Jewish mother disappears to Germany, she is left alone with her elderly father. Both Eddie and Eva come of age at a time that teaches them that happiness is always fleeting, but there are things worth living – or dying – for. Through the connecting stories of these young people and their wider families, and against a background of southern county airfields, London, Oxford, Dorset and France, Rachel Billington brings the world of war time England, now eighty years in the past, back to life. Rachel Billington has written over thirty books. In 2012 she was awarded an OBE for Services to Literature. Her most recent books were the historical novels, Maria and the Admiral and Glory: A Story of Gallipoli. As a journalist, columnist and reviewer, she has contributed to numerous newspapers and magazines worldwide, including the Daily Telegraph, the Guardian, the Daily Mail, the New York Times, The Spectator and The Oldie. She is Associate Editor and contributor to Inside Time, the national newspaper for prisoners. She is a trustee of the Longford Trust and the Tablet magazine. She was President of English PEN from 1998-2001. A German Boxer, a Jewish Assassin and Hitler’s Revenge Stehen Deutsch Dark haired, slight, with deep-set haunted eyes, Herschel Grynszpan is an undocumented Jewish alien living in Paris. He receives a postcard from his parents – recently bundled from their Hanover flat, put on a train and dumped, with 12,000 others on the Polish border. Enraged, Herschel buys a gun and kills a minor German official in the German Embassy. The repercussions trigger Kristalnacht, the nationwide pogrom against the Jews in Germany and Austria, a calamity which some have called the opening act of the Holocaust. Intertwined is the parallel life of the German boxer, Max Schmeling, who as a result of his victory over the then ‘invincible’ Joe Louis in 1936 became the poster boy of the Nazis. He and his movie-star wife, Anny Ondra, were feted by the regime – tea with Hitler, a passage on the airship Hindenburg – until his brutal two-minute beating in the rematch with Louis less than two years later. His story reaches a climax during Kristalnacht, where the champion performs an act of quiet heroism. Stephen Deutsch was born in New York and moved to the UK in 1970, becoming a naturalised citizen in 1978. He was trained as a pianist and composer, spending the first part of his career composing music for concert hall, theatre, television and film. He has been a lecturer in film sound and music, and has edited a journal on that subject, The Soundtrack, and later The New Soundtrack. He is the co-author of a coming book Listening to the Film: A Practical Philosophy of Film Sound. He has written plays for television, broadcast on the BBC. For twenty-five years he composed the music for all stage, film and TV works of the playwright Peter Barnes.

The Name Beneath the Stone Secret of the Unknown Warrior Robert Newcome Three generations, one family, connected by an historic secret. 1917 – Private Daniel Dawkins fights at Messines Ridge and Passchendaele. He writes home to his true-love Joyce, but reveals little of his extreme bravery, his kindness, his loyalty to his comrades and the horrors they experience on the Western Front. 1920 – Captain Peter Harding is tasked with a secret mission to assist in the selection of a body dug up from the battlefields of Flanders to be buried in Westminster Abbey as the 'Unknown Warrior'. Events take place on that expedition that come to haunt him for the rest of his life. 2011 – Sarah Harding discovers Daniel’s letters and Peter’s diaries. Together with historian James Marchant she pieces together the hidden truth behind the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior and must decide what to do with it. Values are challenged and characters are tested in this gripping novel which asks ‘what if the identity of the Unknown Soldier was discovered - and should that secret ever be revealed?’ After five years serving as an officer in The Light Infantry, Robert studied Political Philosophy at Exeter University. Following this he had various management positions in the John Lewis Partnership, finally running management training. He then spent a number of years working for management consultants before setting up his own business with a colleague in 2007. Throughout this period he was writing articles, short stories and novels in his spare time.

In this centenary year of the interment of the Unknown Soldier on Armistice Day, 1920 in Westminster Abbey, Robert Newcome’s debut novel The Name Beneath the Stone: Secret of the Unknown Warrior asks ‘What if the identity of the Unknown Soldier was discovered and should that secret ever be revealed?’ “This breath-taking book is an absolute must read, I really can’t recommend The Name Beneath The Stone highly enough; I’d give it 888,246 stars if I could, one for every military fatality of World War I. Every once in a while, a book comes along that renders me speechless and The Name Beneath The Stone did just that. Stunning and imaginative, it took my breath away. Absolutely outstanding and perfect in every way; this is a book I will be recommending for many years to come.” – The Book Magnet “The blending of fact and fiction makes for a compelling narrative that educates as well as entertains. The level of reality in the depiction of army life and the quality of research that has gone into The Name Beneath The Stone is exemplary.” – Linda’s Book Bag “I cannot express how beautiful and heart-wrenching this book is. The attention to detail is incredible. I was lost in the vivid and exquisite descriptions...strong, informative and engaging, I was completely transfixed.” – Chicks, Rogues and Scandals “A remarkable story that’s insightful, thought provoking, poignant filled with raw, authentic images and scenes. I was completely enthralled… totally transfixed by this fictional story based on a remarkable event in history. The author, Robert Newcome, did not spare us any details and we witness the raw reality of war. The story was gripping, authentic and absorbing and the ending left me with shivers of emotion and with a whole heap of desire to know more.” – Kraftireader “I’ve read a lot of novels set during World War I, but none of them have moved me or challenged my think-ing as much as Robert Newcome’s The Name Beneath the Stone. It is so well written and cleverly plotted that the ending, the final twist in the tale, left my thoughts and emotions in turmoil.” – A Darn Good Read

Beneath My Feet Writers on Walking Duncan Minshull Walking and writing have always gone together. Think of the poets who walk out a rhythm for their lines and the novelists who put their characters on a path. But the best insights, the deepest and most joyous examinations of this simple activity are to be found in non-fiction – in essays, travelogues and memoir. Beneath My Feet rounds up the most memorable walkerwriters from the 1700’s to the modern day, from country hikers to urban strollers, from the rationalists to the truly outlandish. All of them analyse our need to put one foot in front of the other. Follow in the footsteps of William Hazlitt, George Sand, Rebecca Solnit, Virginia Woolf, Will Self and dozens more. Keep up with them - and be astonished. ‘Beneath My Feet is a collection of writings on pedestrianism, shrewdly selected by Duncan Minshull, who, as the editor of two previous books on the subject, is emerging as the laureate of walking.’ – Country Life Duncan Minshull is a freelance audio producer and anthologist. He has previously published two books on walking, While Wandering (Random House) and The Burning Leg (Hesperus Press), and written about the subject for a variety of newspapers and magazines including The Times, Financial Times, The Daily Telegraph, Slightly Foxed, Conde Nast Traveller, Psychologies, and The Lady.

Brazil That Never Was Andrew Lees As a boy growing up near Liverpool in the 1950s, Andrew Lees would visit the docks with his father to watch the ships from Brazil unload their exotic cargo of coffee, cotton bales, molasses, cocoa. One day, his father gave him a dog-eared book called Exploration Fawcett. The book told the true story of Colonel Percy Fawcett, a British explorer who in 1925 had gone in search of a lost city in the Amazon, and never returned. The riveting story of Fawcett’s encounters with hostile tribes, his mission to discover an Atlantean civilization, and the many who lost their own lives when they went in search of him, inspired the young Lees to believe that there were still earthly places where one could ‘fall off the edge’. Years later, after becoming a successful neurologist, Lees set off in search of the mysterious figure of Fawcett. What he found exceeded his wildest imaginings. With access to the cache of ‘Secret Papers’ Lees discovered that Fawcett’s quest was far stranger than searching for a lost city. There was a ‘greater mission’, one that involved the occult, and a belief in a community of evolved beings living in a hidden parallel plane in the Mato Grosso. Andrew Lees is a Professor of Neurology at The National Hospital, London. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the American Academy of Neurology Lifetime Achievement Award. Lees’ articles have appeared in New York Review of Books, The Literary Review, Brain’s Dorsal Column, and the Dublin Review of Books. He is the author of several books, including Ray of Hope; The Silent Plague; and the Notting Hill Editions bestselling Mentored by a Madman: The William Burroughs Experiment.

Happy Half Hours A.A. Milne A.A. Milne, best known as the author of the classic Winnie-the-Pooh stories, was a successful writer long before his children’s stories launched him to overnight success. Milne himself disliked being relegated as a children’s author. At the age of twenty-three, he was appointed the Assistant Editor of Punch. He claimed ‘I know no work manual or mental to equal the appalling heartbreaking anguish of fetching an idea from nowhere.’ Milne had a talent for regularly turning out a thousand whimsical words on lost hats and umbrellas, tennis, dogs, faulty geysers, dotty maids, the English obsession with rank and titles, cheap cigars, and any amount of life’s other little difficulties. He was praised for being able to produce ‘with apparently effortless ease and the utmost gaiety’ articles notable for their ‘enchanting ingenuity’. But there was another, more serious side to Milne. After serving in the First World War, where he survived the Somme, Milne was invalided home with trench fever in 1916. His experiences made him a committed and vocal pacifist. War was nothing but ‘mental and moral degradation’. His fiercely argued pacifism was ahead of his time, and forms some of his most powerful work. This selection of Milne’s articles, spanning over four decades of his life from 1910 to 1952, are collected for the first time in this volume, including his passionately argued writings on pacifism. The writings demonstrate his trademark wit, varied genius, little-known political views, and nostalgia for a lost era. A treasure of a book.

What Time Is It? John Berger and Selu Demirel ‘There is the galactic time of the stars, there is the geological time of mountains, there is the lifetime of a butterfly.’ Visionary thinker John Berger and Turkish artist Selcuk Demirel came together for the last time to create this precious little volume about time. What Time Is It? is a playful meditation on the illusory nature of time. Our perception of time assumes a uniform and ceaseless passing of hours, yet time is turbulent. It expands and contracts according to the intensity of the lived moment. We talk of time ‘saved’ in a hundred household appliances - time, like money, is exchanged for the content it lacks. In this beautiful essay in pictures, Berger posits the idea that by experiencing the extraordinary, we can defy time itself. Illustrated throughout in full colour by Selçuk Demirel in his inventive style and introduced by Berger’s friend Maria Nadotti. This title completes a trilogy of illustrated books by Berger and Demirel, including Cataract (2011), and Smoke (2017). John Berger, storyteller, essayist, screenwriter, dramatist and critic, was one of the most internationally influential writers of the last fifty years. His many books include Ways of Seeing (1972), the Booker prize-winning novel G (1972), Here is where we meet (2005), From A to X (2008), Confabulations (2016), and Smoke (with Selçuk Demirel, 2017). He died in 2017. Selçuk Demirel was born in Artvin, Turkey, in 1954. He trained as an architect and moved to Paris in 1978, where he still lives. His illustrations and books have appeared in many prominent European and American publications. Demirel’s work ranges from book illustrations, magazine covers, children’s books, and from postcards to posters. 48

Royal Greenwich
From the Plantagenets to the Windsors Pieter van der Merwe The royal history of Greenwich stretches back to the mid-fifteenth century, when it was the site of a major royal palace. The beautiful Queen’s House, completed in the 1630s, is the last remnant of this sprawling Tudor palace. From 1676 Charles II’s Royal Observatory made it a centre of pioneering work for the improvement of navigation and global time-keeping, and the Royal Hospital for Seamen, begun in 1696, was a national institution for maritime welfare before it became the home of the Royal Naval College (1873–1998). Pieter van der Merwe is Curator Emeritus at Royal Museums Greenwich. He has written extensively on British maritime history and culture, as well as the history of Greenwich.

D-Day and Normandy A Visual History Anthony Richards Operation Overlord, the codename given to the Allied invasion of German-occupied Western Europe in 1944, was arguably the most challenging, complicated and risky military operation in history. It began on 6th June with Operation Neptune, the largest seaborne invasion ever seen, when 150,000 troops crossed the Channel and attempted to land on the beaches at Normandy. This assault would lay the foundation for the Allied victory on the Western Front, and is now commonly known as D-Day. This highly illustrated book, published in hardback to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day in 2019, will reconstruct the historic landings and the resultant battle for Normandy using artefacts, documents, interviews, film, art and photographs from the archives at Imperial War Museum. Importantly, it will feature firsthand accounts of the action from the vast documents and sound collection, allowing the reader to follow a personal narrative throughout and experience what it was like to live through what was one of the most significant campaigns of the Second World War. Anthony Richards is Head of Documents and Sound at Imperial War Museum, and is the author of The Sunday Times bestseller D-Day and Normandy: A Visual History (2019). His other books include The Somme: A Visual History (2016) and The War on Paper (2018).

Wartime Christmas Anthony Richards Christmas has been regularly celebrated during wartime. From the Christmas truce of 1914 out in no-man’s land on the Western Front, to POWs cooking up their very unique Christmas dinners with whatever they could get their hands on in German prisoner of war camps in the 1940s, the privations and difficulties caused by conflict has never stopped people indulging in a little Christmas cheer. This highly illustrated gift book tells the stories of those who lived through these challenging times, when wrapping paper was banned, rationing was in force and children were separated from their families. Also included are tips and tricks to create recycled presents and greetings cards, and recipes to cook a delicious wartime Christmas meal. Wartime Christmas explores the dichotomy apparent in celebrating ‘peace to all men’ while continuing to fight a war of aggression. Anthony Richards is Head of Documents and Sound at Imperial War Museum, and is the author of The Sunday Times bestseller D-Day and Normandy: A Visual History (2019). His other books include The Somme: A Visual History (2016) and The War on Paper (2018).

Patrol
Imperial War Museum Wartime Classics Fred Madalany 1943, the North African desert. Major Tim Sheldon, exhausted and battle weary, is asked to carry out a futile and unexpected patrol mission. Fred Majdalany’s intimate, tense novel puts this so-called minor mission centre stage, as over the course of the day and during the patrol itself, Sheldon reminisces about his time as a soldier, his own future, and what it means to confront fear. 'He stared desperately into the dark trying to force his eyes to see, so that they ached more than ever... He sensed that the eyes of men were drilling into the back of his neck, so that it felt prickly. Being lost when you are the leader is the worst thing of all. He hated them because he was lost… Rage and despair were welling up inside him…'

Warriors for the Working Day Imperial War Museum Wartime Classics Peter Elstob Based on Peter Elstob’s own wartime experiences, Warriors for the Working Day follows one tank crew as they proceed from the beaches of Normandy into newly liberated Western Europe, brilliantly evoking the claustrophobia, heat and intensity of tank warfare. 'Brook was overcome by the most powerful feeling of sheer animal terror. It was as though his whole body and soul had suddenly rebelled against what he was doing and where he was. For a fraction of a second he wanted to scream and fly in panic, and only the physical impossibility of getting out of the tank stopped him. A moment later it passed, and he found himself obeying Donovan’s orders automatically.' Already available:

London at War 1939-1945 A Nation’s Capital Survives Alan Jeffreys London was a city on the front line in the Second World War. It suffered hits from nearly 19,000 tons of bombs, with nearly 30,000 civilians killed by enemy action. The Blitz changed the landscape of the city. Many famous landmarks were hit, including Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London – even the Imperial War Museum. Some areas, such as Stepney, were so badly damaged that they had to be almost entirely rebuilt after the war. But it wasn’t just the city’s physical landscape that was transformed. With the arrival of large numbers of Commonwealth and overseas service personnel, London became much more cosmopolitan. After 1942, vast numbers of American servicemen were deployed in the UK, and London was a busy transport hub and a popular destination for troops on leave. This book tells the story of these momentous years in London’s history through Imperial War Museum’s unique collections. Using personal accounts from letters and diaries, objects, photographs, maps and documents it gives an up-close and revealing insight into those turbulent years in the capital, experienced by those who lived there. Alan Jeffreys is Senior Curator at Imperial War Museums.

Defence of Houses
Home Guard Training Series Colonel G. A. Wade Houses are found in infinite variety. Some are suited for defence, others are absolute death-traps. Make your defences so good and so cunning that when the enemy begins to attack you can heave a sigh of relief and say, ‘He’s going to ask for it, and he will get it!’ Defence of Houses is one of a series of training books written in 1942 by Colonel G. A. Wade for the newly recruited Home Guard. This reproduction from the Royal Armouries’ archive shows how Second World War trainees learnt to defend themselves amidst the threat of enemy invasion. Colonel G. A. Wade was a British soldier and author who wrote a series of training manuals for the British Home Guard in the expectation of a German invasion. The series was originally published by Gale & Polden. Already available:

Only Water Between
A Family Story from the Great War Angela Clare Taken from a family archive held at the Royal Armouries, Only Water Between tells the story of Captain Jack Adam and his family. Deployed to France in 1918, Jack leaves behind his beloved wife Gert and their three children. Separated by war, letters from home are a lifeline. Containing unpublished extracts and images of personal letters and photos, Only Water Between depicts a unique – yet all-too-common – story of family separation during the First World War. It describes the impact of soldiers missing in action, and the remarkable resilience of families left behind. Lost for many years, even the letters themselves offer a unique story of discovery and reunion. Angela Clare portrays a relationship of intimacy, trust and strength under pressure. As Jack writes to Gert, it was a time when there was ‘only water between’. Angela Clare worked for the Royal Armouries for several years and has shared this story through theatre, talks and in print. She works in museums, sharing historical collections, archives and stories with audiences through a variety of media.

Spanish New Orleans and the Caribbean La Nueva Orleans y la Caribe Españoles Alfred E. Lemmon New Orleans thrived under Spanish rule (1762–1803), linked through trade and empire to the nerve centers of the circum-Caribbean. Curator Alfred E. Lemmon’s introduction explores the far-reaching ways in which the Spanish influence is evident in the city to this day, in architecture, agriculture, science, and the arts. Two additional essays by noted scholars examine other facets of the city’s development during this period: Light Townsend Cummins reflects on the city’s role as an outpost of the Enlightenment in the Americas, while Richard Campanella explores the growth of city planning and urbanism. The Spanish period saw shifts in the legal landscape surrounding slavery, as well as the dramatic growth of the city’s population of free people of color. The daily lives of New Orleanians, and the city’s constant interaction with the Caribbean and the greater Spanish empire, are documented in the surviving examples of material culture, maps, manuscripts, and artworks presented here. Alfred E. Lemmon is director of the Williams Research Center of The Historic New Orleans Collection. He holds a doctorate in Latin American studies from Tulane University. An authority on French and Spanish colonial cultural history, he has been published in numerous books, encyclopedias, and scholarly journals in the United States, Europe, and Latin America.

Enrique Alférez Sculptor
Katie Bowler Young Enrique Alférez, born in Zacatecas, Mexico, lived nearly the entire 20th century. After service in the Mexican Revolution as a youth, he emigrated to Texas; studied in Chicago; and, in 1929, first made his way to Louisiana. For almost seventy years, he worked in New Orleans. His lasting imprint is seen among figurative sculptures, monuments, fountains, and architectural details in prominent locations from the Central Business District to the shore of Lake Pontchartrain and beyond. Author Katie Bowler Young has gained unprecedented access to Alférez’s personal and family holdings and has crafted a poetic evocation of the life and work of this preeminent artist. Enrique Alférez: Sculptor is the latest entry in the well-received Louisiana Artists Biography series. The book, featuring more than 100 images of Alférez’s work in New Orleans and beyond, will be the first in the series to center on sculpture and public art. Katie Bowler Young is the author of Through Water with Ease (Louisiana Literature Press, 2019) and State Street (Bull City Press, 2009). Her work often focuses on art and culture, with a special interest in human interactions. She is director of global relations for UNC Global at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, overseeing international partnerships, academic and cultural programs, and global communications. Among other honors, she has earned a Fulbright-Nehru award and was a finalist for the Marble Faun Poetry Prize. Young received an MFA in creative writing with a concentration in poetry from Warren Wilson College, where she was awarded the Lisel Mueller Scholarship and the Friends of Writers Scholarship. Guarded Words
Prison Writing in England, France, Russia Eric de Bellaigue In Guarded Words Eric de Bellaigue has attempted to answer questions inspired by his reading of Isaac D’Israeli’s short essay ‘Imprisonment of Learned’, from that author’s Curiosities of Literature. He asks: ‘Can prison writing lay claim to a distinctive chapter in histories of literature? Is there a thread linking prisoners’ output across the centuries? Can confinement provide the ideal environment for literary creativity? Is there common ground among the subjects treated? Alternatively, does diversity ride rough-shod over the shared experiences of imprisonment?’ The author’s Preface explains the self-imposed restrictions that have determined his choice of writers and how the sequence of chapters has largely been governed by geography and chronology. The main sections of the book are: Incarceration in England; Incarceration in France; Incarceration in Russia; Convicted Murderers. Born in France, educated in England and Canada (McGill University), Eric de Bellaigue’s career has taken him into finance and publishing. After a brief spell as a journalist, he has spent some forty years studying the past and forecasting the future of publishing in Britain. His own works include The Business of Publishing: The Bellaigue Report (Hutchinson, 1981); British Book Publishing as a Business since the 1960s, (The British Library, 2004), and numerous articles, notably in the international journal LOGOS, now owned by Brill, the Dutch academic publisher, and the trade journal The Bookseller. He served for several years as a non-executive director of the Quarto Group.

Travels of a Painter JAMES REEVE Since 1961 James Reeve has been exhibiting and selling his paintings, first in Florence, then in Madrid. From 1974 onwards he has travelled widely, often with subsequent London gallery exhibitions. Here he vividly describes and illustrates the characters he meets and the adventures which unfold in Haiti, Madagascar, India, Australia, Jordan, the Yemen and Mexico. Travels of a Painter is a series of self-contained short stories recalling travels, anecdotes and encounters which he has illustrated with his vividly colourful vignettes. Always travelling with the purpose of work, in Italy James meets Mrs Acton (Harold’s mother). In the Australian Outback he draws among other things a Dump, and there too is Madam Tonguere catching a Witchetee grub. He meets Princess Elizabeth of Toro in Uganda and is captured by pygmies in the Congo forest. He paints the fearsome Mrs Gilbert Miller’s portrait in Palm Beach and travels in Rajasthan with Diana Wordsworth, a last relic of the Raj. At last, weary of wandering, he discovers a distant cloud-forest village in Mexico, where Edward James, as the only other Englishman, had preceded him. There he built a house. James Reeve studied in Oxford and then Madrid at the Real Academia Bellas Artes de San Fernando, a unique art school providing instruction in Anatomy through observing the dis¬section of vagrants’ corpses in the morgue. He then entered the enclosed Order of the Jeronomites in Segovia as novitiate until he decided to rejoin the world and begin in earnest to paint. From a slum house in London, James Reeve set forth to work in (then) remote places: Uganda, Jordan, the Australian Outback, Haiti, Madagas¬car, Rajasthan, the Yemen until finding his home in Mexico for over twenty-five years. James Reeve now lives in Somerset where he continues to paint and write. 66
