Campus Welcome Guide 2019

A Warm Welcome

Professor Terry Perk Head of UCA Canterbury

On behalf of UCA, I would like to give you a warm welcome to our Canterbury campus. Situated in the heart of Canterbury, a cathedral city exuding historic charm, our campus presents a wealth of opportunity. At the hub of an incredible network of local and regional arts organisations, you will be instantly connected to professional opportunities and projects in and outside of your course. From partnerships with galleries to connections with festivals, there’s something for all our creatives. Bursting with student appeal, it’s no wonder that so many of our students fall in love with the city. The warm, friendly atmosphere both on and off campus will make you feel right at home. Last year saw UCA students exceed expectations, from award-winning design to international architecture. Alongside these incredible achievements, our students are also engaged in helping shape our local environment in Canterbury. Amongst these last year was MA Fine Art student, Gloria Treseder, who won an open art competition to transform Canterbury East

Network Rail Footbridge with her communityinspired designs. Here at UCA, we will also encourage you to collaborate with different courses across our campus to enhance your skills and experience. One thing I am personally looking forward to for the coming year is our campus celebration of the 100-year centenary of the Bauhaus, which has had such an influence on Art and Design education in Europe. In October, a series of shared projects and guest lectures across our courses at Canterbury will give new and existing students and staff new opportunities to work collaboratively, bringing our already wonderful community even closer together. Progressive and traditional, historic and futurethinking, UCA really does have it all to offer. Our environment here at Canterbury makes the overall UCA experience a remarkably diverse, stimulating and enjoyable one. As such I look forward to you joining us and helping shape your creative future together.

UCA Canterbury

The campus Our Canterbury campus is a short walk from the picturesque city centre and has a range of purpose-built studios, workshops and lecture theatres. With on-campus accommodation, a café, a newly refurbished bar and a range of art facilities including a specialist library, an art shop and the Herbert Read art gallery, the campus is a relaxed and creative environment. We pride ourselves on being a part of Kent’s vibrant and dynamic international art scene. Our campus is perfectly set in Kent’s glorious countryside and offers a wide range of places to live and things to do. With a buzzing student population, there are lots of living options, making it an attractive place to study. In addition, we have well-established community links which enable grants, paid apprenticeships and internships, involvement with events such as the Folkestone Triennial, and the availability of studio spaces for art and design students and graduates in the area. The campus has a warm, welcoming community that will allow you to fit right in. Watch our video to see what it’s like at UCA Canterbury.

The city Canterbury is an unexpectedly small city brimming with student appeal, with a distinctive mix of ancient culture and contemporary charm. Being home to three universities makes it a lively place, with no shortage of entertainment or good food. A stroll around the city will reveal historic architecture, eclectic bookshops and characterful cafés, alongside lively pubs, bars, clubs and restaurants, so you’ll never run out of things to do! Why not book a visit to Canterbury Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, or go punting along the river? Canterbury’s rich cultural feel attracts a diverse creative crowd, making it the perfect student hub. The nightlife is one of the city’s main draws for its student residents – with DJs, clubs, comedy, cocktails, live bands and more, you’ll find plenty that will appeal to all tastes. Canterbury has fantastic transport links, so you’ll also be within easy reach of London, as well as the towns of Ashford, Maidstone and Rochester, if you fancy going further afield.

Why choose Canterbury?

Canterbury really does have it all to offer. The charm of the city is ignited by architecture, history and culture and it proudly boasts a variety of attractions, from museums to theatres, cathedrals to river tours. There really is something for everyone, so whatever you like to do for fun outside of your studies – and whatever your budget – you won’t be disappointed. The cost of living in Canterbury allows you to enjoy one of the UK’s quaintest towns on a student-friendly budget.

Students’ Union welcome

Marta Szurmiej UCASU President

We’re here to make your time at UCA amazing! We’re led by and for students, and each year everyone gets a vote to elect a President and VicePresidents for Surrey and Kent. This means you are at the heart of everything we do, and always will be. We’ve won national awards for our work, but we’re always trying our best to do new and better things. We know it’s not all about studying! To ensure you get the most out of your UCA experience we work closely to organise social events, including Freshers’ Fair and work with local venues to ensure you get the best deals on activities and nights out in the area. Over 500 people run or take part in our clubs and societies across our four campuses. UCA Canterbury has a range of existing clubs and societies and we encourage you to get involved and make the most of your time here with us. There are plenty of ways to get involved with us, whether you want to enjoy the events we host, change something about your course, or become a bigger part of your campus community. For instance, we run a Course Rep programme, which puts two students from every year of every subject in a position to give feedback about how the course is run.

Part of what we do is to meet with students directly, to discuss the issues affecting you. This helps us to only work on things that you want, as well as provide support and information about personal or academic concerns. Though we’re run independently to UCA, we work closely with every area of the University to ensure your best interests are integral to everything that happens. As a result, we’ve achieved agreements to pause tuition fee rises, provide student input on the design of campus common areas, and remove the need to spend big on materials to get a good grade. We also know that sometimes things don’t go as planned, so we offer support around course and welfare issues. From academic appeals to help around resubmitting work, we can help simplify the process for you. You’ll get a warm welcome in the Students’ Union, where everyone will always do their best to help you with any issue that you have. See you soon, Marta Szurmiej UCASU President

SU Clubs & Societies UCA Canterbury encourages you to be an active member of the UCA community. Your student body has established several clubs and societies to help enhance your overall experience, enable you to meet new people, and most importantly have fun! We welcome all sorts of activities, from competitive sports clubs to cultural, political and artistic societies and much more!

School Reps In order to provide greater representation within the UCA community we also have one School Rep for each of the eight Schools. School Reps attend School Boards, where they can discuss wider academic issues and trends. They also sit on the Students’ Union Executive Committee, where they are involved in making political decisions that relate to student issues. Learn who your Reps are and what they’re up to

Information is subject to change, so please check the ucasu.com website for a live list. Can’t see something you’d like to join? Why not start your own! For more information, please visit: ucasu.com/clubs/lead Course Reps At the start of each year, we ask students to nominate themselves to become a Course Rep, putting you at the heart of your studies and enabling you to be proactive about change. Each course has reps who are selected near the start of term. As a Course Rep you’ll pass on student feedback and get extra info about your course at meetings called ‘Course Boards’. From tiny problems to really big issues, if things could be improved, Course Reps can represent student views to Course Leaders – meaning students don’t just consume their university experience, they create it. For more information, please visit: ucasu.com/coursereps

Freshers’ Week 23–27 September 2019 To welcome you to life at UCA Canterbury, our SU organises a wealth of fun activities and events especially for you during your first week. With a thriving student population, there will be no shortage of Freshers’ activities for you to get involved with around the city. This is the perfect induction to university life and will give you the opportunity to meet other students and have fun before you start your course. To access your email please visit: mail.uca.ac.uk or go online via the MyUCA homepage. Please note the mailbox is limited to 1GB.

Your UCA username and password will give you access to: –– IT facilities across campus. –– The Student Portal (myUCA) –– Email services –– Print and copy services –– Wireless services. Your UCA email address and password will give you access to: –– Office 365 (free Microsoft Office) –– LinkedIn Learning (creative skills) –– Student discounts. Study Abroad

Broaden your horizons with international opportunities Your university experience at UCA can reach far beyond the South East of England. At UCA we offer you the opportunity to study abroad as a fully recognised and accredited part of your degree course. We pride ourselves in having strong collaborative links with partner institutions worldwide, and our experienced team can help you take advantage of the opportunities available to study outside the UK.

There are two types of exchange options available – a funded Erasmus+ exchange or an international exchange, each of which normally lasts three to five months. If you are on an undergraduate degree, exchanges tend to take place during your second year in spring term.

Studying abroad can be a life-changing experience. Living in another country, you’ll experience new places, people, cultures and possibilities. You’ll develop initiative, independence, motivation and, depending on where you go, a working knowledge of another language, all important skills for employability. Choosing to study abroad can open up a world of career prospects and allow you to develop links with key emerging economies and form networks to set you up in your future career.

Find out more about our study abroad programme at: uca.ac.uk/study/study-abroad

For help and advice, our Study Abroad Co-ordinator is here to help you through the process and make sure that you are fully set up for your time away.

Financial support

UK students have access to a number of sources of funding to help with the costs of studying for a degree, which can be divided into two types – loans and grants. If you have a disability, you may be eligible to apply for support with the costs of study. Look at gov.uk/disabled-studentsallowances-dsas to get an idea of what you can access. Our Specialist Advisers can guide you to potential funding sources and offer you information and advice. You can find full details about the funding sources available to you on our website at: uca.ac.uk/financial-support

Payment of deposit and tuition fees for international students If you are from outside of the EU, you need to pay a tuition fee deposit of £2,500 to secure your place. If you haven’t paid your deposit yet, you can do this using our online payment system: uca.ac.uk/life-at-uca/fees/how-to-pay As the fee for international students is higher than the fee for UK and EU students, you will receive a discount if you pay your tuition fees in full before the published start date of the course. If you wish to pay your tuition fees in instalments (maximum of six instalments) you will pay the standard fee. Alternatively, you can pay at the Cashier’s Office on campus.

Financial support for international students See our financial support web pages for more information about the support available to international students: uca.ac.uk/financial-support If you have any queries about International fees, please contact our admissions team: T: 01252 892838 E: internationaladmissions@uca.ac.uk

Getting to campus The following pages give you our recommended directions to campus via various methods of transport. To view this information on our website, along with our address and postcode, a map to campus and directions from UK airports, please visit: uca.ac.uk/contact-us If you have any questions about travelling to campus, please contact our enquiries team T: 01252 892883 E: enquiries@uca.ac.uk UCA Canterbury New Dover Road Canterbury Kent CT1 3AN +44 (0) 1227 817302 By rail Take a National Rail train from London Victoria to Canterbury East, which is the nearest train station to campus, then take a taxi to the University (make sure that you ask for the University for the Creative Arts in New Dover Road – Canterbury has several colleges and universities and sometimes the taxi drivers get them confused!).

By road From London, take the M2 towards Dover, then take the exit at Junction 7 and follow the A2 towards Faversham. Exit the A2 at the A2050 to Canterbury. At the outskirts of the city, take a right at St Peter’s Roundabout and follow the A290/A28 Ring Road. Turn right at the third roundabout by the cinema (signposted A2050 to Sandwich) into New Dover Road. Immediately after the traffic lights turn left into the University drive – look for the signs to Canterbury College and to UCA. Follow the drive round to the right, UCA is on your left. If you’re using a satnav, please use the postcode CT1 3AN rather than searching for UCA Canterbury as some satnavs may take you to the wrong campus. Parking Student parking is only available for blue badge holders, and anyone with special requirements should contact the campus directly on 01227 817302 to arrange this.

Alternatively, take a National Rail train from London St. Pancras International or London Waterloo East to Canterbury West, changing at Ashford International if necessary, then take a taxi to the University.

We recommend that you use the Park and Ride car park which is on New Dover Road (CT1 3EJ). The bus journey to the campus only takes about five minutes. If you mention to the driver where you’re headed they can help you get off at the right stop. You can also look out for the large Canterbury College sign as the UCA campus is located to the left of this.

Eurostar passengers can get off the train at Ashford International in Kent. This station has direct rail links to Canterbury.

By air It takes between one and two hours to drive from Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton airports to UCA Canterbury. The same journeys take between two and three hours by train. There are rail and coach connections from all airports via central London to all our campuses. By sea The English Channel ferry crossing arrives at Dover and the Eurotunnel at Folkestone. Both Dover and Folkestone are around 30 minutes from Canterbury. From Dover you can take a National Express Coach from Dover (Ferry Port) to Canterbury (Bus Station), or you can catch a National Rail train from Dover Priory to Canterbury East. From these stations, you can catch a taxi to the University. From Folkestone, you can take a Stagecoach Gold number 16 bus from Folkestone Central Railway Station which stops at St. Augustine’s Road. UCA is only three minutes’ walk from here on the righthand side before the traffic lights – turn right into the drive signposted ‘Canterbury College/UCA’ and then right again. Alternatively, you can catch a National Rail train to Canterbury East or Canterbury West, changing at either Dover Priory or Ashford International. If you choose to drive, from Dover take the A256 north, which leads onto the A2 towards Canterbury. From Folkestone, take the M20 east, which turns into the A20. Exit onto the A260, then take the A2 towards Canterbury. Exit the A2 at A2050, take the third exit at the roundabout and follow the New Dover Road towards Canterbury. UCA is on the right-hand side before the traffic lights – turn right into the drive signposted ‘Canterbury College/UCA’ and then right again.

Buses Stagecoach South East operate bus services in and around Canterbury. For details of routes and discounted tickets for students (studentrider) see their website stagecoachbus.com/regionaltickets/south-east/ canterbury/unirider

Enrolment

Step one Before beginning your studies, you’ll need to enrol with us. The enrolment process is in two stages. The first stage can be done via the Applicant Portal before you arrive. The enrolment task will be available from the week commencing 21 August 2019 (pre-degree courses) and 28 August 2019 (undergraduate and postgraduate courses). You can access the Applicant Portal at: registryonline.ucreative.ac.uk Step two The second part of the enrolment process will take place during your induction week once you’re with us on campus. At your enrolment session, a member of the enrolment team will check your qualifications and identification so you’ll need to bring the following with you:

–– All of your original exam certificates –– Passport (or a driving licence AND birth certificate if you don’t have a passport) –– If you are from outside the UK, you must also bring details of your visa, if you have one. You’ll need to complete both of these stages in order to be a fully enrolled student. We will send you an email with information about your enrolment and induction in August. Need help with your enrolment? Visit: uca.ac.uk/enrolment

Step three – Your induction Your induction is a series of sessions specific to your course, which will introduce you to life at UCA and provide you with the information you need to know about our facilities and resources. Your Welcome Week timetable will be emailed to you separately. This provides more information about when and where these sessions will take place. You’ll receive your full course timetable during your Welcome Week. Step four – Your Student ID Card Over the summer, an ‘ID photo upload’ task will be available on the Applicant Portal for you to upload a photograph for your Student ID Card. We encourage you to make use of this option, as it allows you to select your preferred photograph. Unlike a UK passport picture, you are allowed to smile! Once you’ve enrolled, this photo will be used to create your Student ID Card, which will give you access to our buildings and facilities. ID Cards must be worn and be visible at all times whilst on UCA premises. If you can’t upload a photo, there will be an option to have your photograph taken when you arrive. However, you will not have the opportunity to review this photo, and no other methods of submission will be available.
