Welcome to UCA Rochester
Campus Welcome Guide 2019
A Warm Welcome
On behalf of UCA, I would like to give you a warm welcome to our Rochester campus. Our campus is perched high on a hill overlooking the River Medway, a historic area rich in culture. The warm, friendly atmosphere both on and off campus will make you feel right at home. At the hub of an incredible network of local and regional arts organisations, galleries and museums, coming to Rochester means you will be instantly connected to professional opportunities and projects both on and outside of your course. From partnerships with galleries to connections with festivals, there’s something for everyone in our creative community.
Last year saw UCA students exceed expectations, from award-winning design and photography to the hottest new high-street trends. Amongst these was student, Angelo Mikatos, who since graduating from UCA has worked for ASOS, Russell & Bromley and currently holds the position of Senior Fashion Assistant at GQ Magazine. Here at UCA, we will encourage you to collaborate with different courses across our campus to enhance your skills and experience. Progressive and traditional, historic and future-thinking, UCA really does have it all to offer. Our environment here at Rochester makes the overall UCA experience a remarkably diverse, stimulating and enjoyable one. I hope you will join us so we can shape your creative future together.
Professor Thomass Atkinson Head of UCA Rochester
UCA Rochester
The campus Our campus is bursting with artistic energy and offers an inspirational environment for your study. Rochester overlooks the Medway area, home to some of the most creative people in the country. Our Zandra Rhodes Gallery provides a focus for local interest in the arts as the campus hosts important exhibitions and contemporary art and design events throughout the year. UCA Rochester is at the heart of a vibrant community of creative arts organisations that produce, promote and retail the very best in contemporary design, craft and media – making Medway a lively centre for all creatively minded people. Watch our video to see what it’s like at UCA Rochester.
The town Rochester is an historic town with a reputation as a centre of culture, learning and new technologies. By day, students at our Rochester campus can enjoy discovering the town’s rich literary heritage and beautiful architecture, browsing the quirky streets lined with boutique shops, or heading down to the river for some water sports. By night, Rochester’s impressive selection of bars, clubs and restaurants become the main attraction for our tight-knit student community. If you’re heading further afield, Rochester is wellconnected – you can get to London in 40 minutes by train, to nearby Chatham, Gillingham, Strood or Maidstone by bus, or to Ebbsfleet International in just 20 minutes by car if you’re taking a trip to the continent.
Why Rochester? Rochester really does have it all to offer. The home of Charles Dickens for many years, the town proudly boasts a variety of attractions, from arts festivals to its imposing Norman cathedral. There really is something for everyone, so whatever you like to do for fun outside of your studies, or whatever your budget, you won’t be disappointed. The cost of living in Rochester and the surrounding area allows you to enjoy one of the UK’s most vibrant areas on a student-friendly budget. You can make huge savings compared to living in London, plus surrounding towns such as Chatham offer even more value for money.

Students’ Union welcome
Marta Szurmiej UCASU President
We’re here to make your time at UCA amazing! We’re led by and for students, and each year everyone gets a vote to elect a President and VicePresidents for Surrey and Kent. This means you are at the heart of everything we do, and always will be. We’ve won national awards for our work, but we’re always trying our best to do new and better things. We know it’s not all about studying! To ensure you get the most out of your UCA experience we work closely to organise social events, including Freshers’ Fair and work with local venues to ensure you get the best deals on activities and nights out in the area. Over 500 people run or take part in our clubs and societies across our four campuses. UCA Rochester has a range of existing clubs and societies and we encourage you to get involved and make the most of your time here with us.
There are plenty of ways to get involved with us, whether you want to enjoy the events we host, change something about your course, or become a bigger part of your campus community. For instance, we run a Course Rep programme, which puts two students from every year of every subject in a position to give feedback about how the course is run.
Part of what we do is to meet with students directly, to discuss the issues affecting you. This helps us to only work on things that you want, as well as provide support and information about personal or academic concerns. Though we’re run independently to UCA, we work closely with every area of the University to ensure your best interests are integral to everything that happens. As a result, we’ve achieved agreements to pause tuition fee rises, provide student input on the design of campus common areas, and remove the need to spend big on materials to get a good grade. We also know that sometimes things don’t go as planned, so we offer support around course and welfare issues. From academic appeals to help around resubmitting work, we can help simplify the process for you. You’ll get a warm welcome in the Students’ Union, where everyone will always do their best to help you with any issue that you have. See you soon, Marta Szurmiej UCASU President
SU Clubs & Societies UCA Rochester encourages you to be an active member of the UCA community. Your student body has established several clubs and societies to help enhance your overall experience, enable you to meet new people, and most importantly have fun! We welcome all sorts of activities, from competitive sports clubs to cultural, political and artistic societies and much more!
School Reps In order to provide greater representation within the UCA community we also have one School Rep for each of the eight Schools. School Reps attend School Boards, where they can discuss wider academic issues and trends. They also sit on the Students’ Union Executive Committee, where they are involved in making political decisions that relate to student issues. Learn who your Reps are and what they’re up to.
Information is subject to change, so please check the ucasu.com website for a live list. Can’t see something you’d like to join? Why not start your own! For more information, please visit: ucasu.com/clubs/lead Course Reps At the start of each year, we ask students to nominate themselves to become a Course Rep, putting you at the heart of your studies and enabling you to be proactive about change. Each course has reps who are selected near the start of term. As a Course Rep you’ll pass on student feedback and get extra info about your course at meetings called ‘Course Boards’. From tiny problems to really big issues, if things could be improved, Course Reps can represent student views to Course Leaders – meaning students don’t just consume their university experience, they create it. For more information, please visit: ucasu.com/coursereps

Study Abroad
Broaden your horizons with international opportunities Your university experience at UCA can reach far beyond the South East of England. At UCA we offer you the opportunity to study abroad as a fully recognised and accredited part of your degree course. We pride ourselves in having strong collaborative links with partner institutions worldwide, and our experienced team can help you take advantage of the opportunities available to study outside the UK.
There are two types of exchange options available – a funded Erasmus+ exchange or an international exchange, each of which normally lasts three to five months. If you are on an undergraduate degree, exchanges tend to take place during your second year in spring term.
Studying abroad can be a life-changing experience. Living in another country, you’ll experience new places, people, cultures and possibilities. You’ll develop initiative, independence, motivation and, depending on where you go, a working knowledge of another language, all important skills for employability.
Find out more about our study abroad programme at: uca.ac.uk/study/study-abroad
Choosing to study abroad can open up a world of career prospects and allow you to develop links with key emerging economies and form networks to set you up in your future career.
For help and advice, our Study Abroad Co-ordinator is here to help you through the process and make sure that you are fully set up for your time away.
Financial support
UK students have access to a number of sources of funding to help with the costs of studying for a degree, which can be divided into two types – loans and grants. If you have a disability, you may be eligible to apply for support with the costs of study. Look at gov.uk/disabled-studentsallowances-dsas to get an idea of what you can access. Our Specialist Advisers can guide you to potential funding sources and offer you information and advice. You can find full details about the funding sources available to you on our website at: uca.ac.uk/financial-support
Payment of deposit and tuition fees for international students If you are from outside of the EU, you need to pay a tuition fee deposit of £2,500 to secure your place. If you haven’t paid your deposit yet, you can do this using our online payment system: uca.ac.uk/life-at-uca/fees/how-to-pay
As the fee for international students is higher than the fee for UK and EU students, you will receive a discount if you pay your tuition fees in full before the published start date of the course. If you wish to pay your tuition fees in instalments (maximum of six instalments) you will pay the standard fee. Alternatively, you can pay at the Cashier’s Office on campus. For details of other public car parks nearby, please visit the Medway Council website: medway.gov.uk/information/findmynearest.aspx
By sea The English Channel ferry crossing arrives at Dover and the Eurotunnel at Folkestone. Both Dover and Folkestone are around an hour from Rochester.
By rail, take a National Rail train from Dover Priory to Rochester or Chatham and then walk to the University. By road, take the M20 northbound then exit at junction 6 onto the A229, heading towards Rochester. Take this road into town before taking a sharp right turn at Old Patten’s Lane, then left up Boundary Road. At the T-junction turn left on Fort Pitt Hill which will take you up to our campus.
Enrolment
Step one Before beginning your studies, you’ll need to enrol with us. The enrolment process is in two stages. The first stage can be done via the Applicant Portal before you arrive. The enrolment task will be available from the week commencing 21 August 2019 (pre-degree courses) and 28 August 2019 (undergraduate and postgraduate courses). You can access the Applicant Portal at: registryonline.ucreative.ac.uk
Step three – Your induction Your induction is a series of sessions specific to your course, which will introduce you to life at UCA and provide you with the information you need to know about our facilities and resources. Your Welcome Week timetable will be emailed to you separately. This provides more information about when and where these sessions will take place. You’ll receive your full course timetable during your Welcome Week.
Step two The second part of the enrolment process will take place during your induction week once you’re with us on campus. At your enrolment session, a member of the enrolment team will check your qualifications and identification so you’ll need to bring the following with you:
Step four – Your Student ID Card Over the summer, an ‘ID photo upload’ task will be available on the Applicant Portal for you to upload a photograph for your Student ID Card. We encourage you to make use of this option, as it allows you to select your preferred photograph. Unlike a UK passport picture, you are allowed to smile!
–– All of your original exam certificates –– Passport (or a driving licence AND birth certificate if you don’t have a passport) –– If you are from outside the UK, you must also bring details of your visa, if you have one.
Once you’ve enrolled, this photo will be used to create your Student ID Card, which will give you access to our buildings and facilities. ID Cards must be worn and be visible at all times whilst on UCA premises.
You’ll need to complete both of these stages in order to be a fully enrolled student.
If you can’t upload a photo, there will be an option to have your photograph taken when you arrive. However, you will not have the opportunity to review this photo, and no other methods of submission will be available.
We will send you an email with information about your enrolment and induction in August. Need help with your enrolment? Visit: uca.ac.uk/enrolment
