Welcome

Professor Bashir Makhoul – Vice-Chancellor

At UCA, all of our campuses are wholly devoted to creative courses and our pre-degree students are an integral part of university life, working with the same industry quality equipment as our undergraduate and postgraduate students. You’ll be part of a community where creative ideas and passions are shared on a daily basis. Where students of all levels inspire one another to create extraordinary work.

Our pre-degree (further education) courses offer you the opportunity to explore the wide range of art, craft, design and media subject areas we offer – before choosing a specialism for undergraduate study. You can discover your artistic strengths and expand your portfolio by exploring a wide range of subjects, including fashion, textiles, graphic design, fine art, animation, photography, film and media.

We are the number one specialist university for the creative industries in the Complete University Guide and The Guardian University Guide league tables. We are also a top 25 university, ranking 21st in the UK by The Guardian. Studying with us at pre-degree level will provide excellent opportunities for progression. With access to our Diploma 2 Degree scheme, specialist advisers and careers services, we’ll help to develop you as a creative professional to truly build a foundation for your future career.

You’ll learn in a university environment with access to high-spec facilities, and be taught by dedicated teaching staff – most of whom are practising artists and designers. You’ll enjoy our art and design studios, and benefit from using extensive facilities that you won’t find at most schools, along with exceptional library and learning centres. Our aim is to help you identify your passions and prepare you for the next stage of your creative arts education. 5

94.6% of our graduates are employed (or in further study) within six months

6

Create a foundation for your career The creative economy is growing at almost twice the rate of the wider UK economy, with 1 in 11 jobs across the UK now belonging to the creative industries. For the next generation of promising creatives, there has never been a better time to take a creative course and delve into an exciting career. By studying at UCA, you’ll become part of our creative community, which incorporates a network of alumni that includes nationally and internationally renowned creative figures, Oscar-winning filmmakers and animators, fashion designers and Turner Prize winning artists. By taking a pre-degree course, you’ll be able to explore the subjects that you have a real passion for, which will then help you choose a degree that builds on your talents and artistic strengths. After exploring the different artistic mediums, you’ll choose a specialism in an area you feel comfortable with and want to learn more about. Your tutor will be able to make a recommendation at the end of the term and help you secure a place on an undergraduate course through our Diploma 2 Degree scheme (see pages 10-11).

Choosing the right journey for you In the arts, most universities will assess whether a student is ready to study on a degree programme by examining a portfolio of their creative work. This is very different from other subject areas where academic qualifications are the main deciding factor. Pre-degree courses give you the opportunity to build your portfolio, whilst exploring a range of disciplines and developing yourself as an artist. Where are you now and where do you want to go? – Have a think about your strengths and weaknesses. Is there a subject or specialism that really appeals to you? Is there a future career that you can see yourself pursuing? It’s always worth remembering that you’re more likely to do well studying a course you really enjoy and that you know will help you to fulfil your ambitions. So, ask yourself what subject you feel the most committed to and passionate about as a creative individual. How do you want to get there? – The diagram opposite shows you the different further and higher education routes that are available to you here at UCA. There are a number of routes you can take, depending on where you are in your journey, and where you want to go.

8

If you have GCSEs, but not A-Levels… – You can come straight to university after completing your GCSEs aged 16. Our Diploma and Extended Diploma courses are an alternative to AS and A-Levels, where you’ll develop your skills and creativity in a university setting. You’ll gain the same number of UCAS points as studying A-Levels, but you’ll also develop a portfolio of work that will help secure you a place on a degree programme.

If you’ve completed your A-Levels… – Our Diploma in Art & Design – Foundation Studies is globally recognised as bridging the gap between A-Levels and a creative degree course. It’ll give you the chance to explore specialist subjects that aren’t covered by A-Levels, such as crafts, fashion, graphic design, animation and fine art. After receiving a grounding across a range of subject areas, you’ll work with our Course Leaders to build an impressive portfolio of work in your main area of interest. If you’re an international student and you need to develop your English language skills… – Our International Foundation in Art, Design & Media blends creative development with English Language Teaching, enabling you to reach your IELTS target for undergraduate level study as well as developing your portfolio. If you’re returning to education… – Our Access to Higher Education Diploma is offered on a part-time basis and is designed to prepare those returning to education for a degree course. Question? Ask us – For more information, come to one of our Open Days – see page 1 or visit: uca.ac.uk/opendays Or ask us a question online: uca.ac.uk/ask-uca

Portfolio advice

Preparing your portfolio – Depending on the course you’re looking to study, you’ll be asked to present a portfolio as well as your exam results as part of your application. A portfolio is also a great way for you to present your creative ideas and showcase the techniques you’ve used, the choices you make such as the materials you prefer, and your personal style. Your portfolio should represent a selection of your work – it could include short films you’ve made, photography, paintings, illustrations or sketches. It’ll demonstrate your artistic skillset and capabilities which we’ll use to assess your creative potential. Most portfolios are made up of 16 to 20 pieces of work, particularly if they’re in a traditional A1 black portfolio. No doubt you’ll have a lot of work that you could include, but cutting it down to those 16 to 20 pieces of work is really essential.

12

Think about how you might put ideas together, and how your work might flow through the portfolio. How you document and develop those ideas are the elements we want to see. The areas that you’re interested in need to really come across in your portfolio, you should aim to show us who you are, your individuality.

It’s important to make sure that your work is concise and consistent to show us that you’ve taken the time to consider what you want to display. A good way of doing this is to choose a theme that will run throughout your portfolio, helping to show the creative journey that you’ve been on so far. Depending on the course you apply for, a portfolio may not be required, but we’d love to see your creative work if you wish to include examples in your application. You can submit either a physical or digital portfolio depending on your circumstances (international students can send digital files). We also have an Online Portfolio Upload system where you can submit your completed portfolio to us. Good luck with your application! Check out our library of portfolio videos for further information on how to prepare: uca.ac.uk/study/portfolio-advice

Tip: Try to avoid creating any confusion in your portfolio – keep the layout simple.

Our Canterbury campus is a short walk from the city centre and has a range of purpose built studios, workshops and lecture theatres. The campus is a relaxed and creative environment to study in with a café, student bar, and a range of art facilities including a specialist library, an art shop and the Herbert Read Gallery. We’ve forged strong links within Canterbury and East Kent’s vibrant international art scene with festivals, grants, paid apprenticeships, studio spaces and internships available for art and design students and graduates in the area. We have a strong relationship with the Turner Contemporary and the Whitstable and Folkstone Bi & Triennials. Canterbury even has its own Arts and Creative Development team, offering advice and information to arts practitioners, groups, businesses and members of the public.

16

Epsom

UCA Epsom is a hive of creativity across a range of Fashion courses as well as Graphics and Music, plus the UK’s first MBA in Fashion Business. With multiple technical facilities on site, you’ll have a truly enriching learning experience. Our campus is a 10-minute walk from the train station, where you can travel into London in just over half an hour. Epsom has an established and vibrant arts scene, boosted by exhibitions and activities organised by Surrey Arts, Surrey Contemporary Arts and Surrey Artists. With a long tradition in the local youth services for performance and creative arts, the town has a strong arts presence and works hard to promote new talent, often seeing students work showcased in many venues across the town.

17

Farnham

With over 2,000 students, Farnham is the biggest of the UCA campuses and has an incredibly strong community feel. The campus offers courses across a range of subject areas, including Animation, Crafts and Product Design, Media and Advertising, Film, Fine Art, Graphics and Illustration, Journalism and Media Production, Music, Performing Arts, Textiles, Photography and Computer Arts.

18

Farnham is also home to the James Hockey and Foyer galleries which host a range of exhibitions by visiting artists as well as our staff, students and graduates. A number of research centres are also based on campus, including the Centre for Sustainable Design and the Crafts Study Centre, an internationally-renowned museum and gallery for crafts.

Farnham enjoys a long-standing association with the creative industries and has a variety of independent boutiques along with several art galleries and crafts shops. Arts venues such as the Farnham Maltings support the local creative community by hosting many comedy, theatre, cinema, craft and music events. However, the craft culture in Farnham is one of its most defining features – thanks to its exceptional arts facilities, the town boasts the accolade of Craft Town England. You can also discover a handful of local potteries, several independent art galleries, a sculpture park, and many more unique gems in the local area.

Rochester

Our Rochester campus is a creative hub for students studying a rich variety of courses in Fashion, Photography, Jewellery, Design for Theatre, Film and Performance and Digital Animation. Rochester is also the link campus for the Maidstone Studios TV Production course. UCA Rochester is at the centre of a busy community of creative arts organisations that produce, promote and retail the very best in contemporary design, craft and media. A 10-minute walk from the town centre and five minutes away from Chatham station, the campus is bursting with artistic energy and offers an inspirational environment to begin your creative studies. The Medway area is home to some of the most creative people in the country. Our Zandra Rhodes Gallery provides a focus for local interest in the arts as the campus hosts important exhibitions and contemporary art and design events throughout the year.

19

Accommodation

Many of our pre-degree students live close to our campuses and opt to live at home. But for those of you coming from further afield, we have a range of accommodation options. A home from home – Our halls of residence are all self-catering, and in most cases, you’ll have your own study bedroom with a bed, desk, chair, wardrobe, and blinds or curtains. From the moment you arrive here, you’ll be part of a diverse and tight-knit creative community. And bringing your own personal possessions will help to make the place feel more like home. All bedrooms and shared areas are heated, and each house or flat has a shared kitchen/ dining area. You’ll need to bring your own pots, pans, cutlery, crockery, kitchen utensils, tea towels, towels, sheets, pillows, and a duvet (and cover) or blankets. All internal shared areas are cleaned once a week, although you’re responsible for cleaning your own room and en-suite bathroom (if you have one). We provide internet access in all bedrooms and shared areas – the cost is included in your residence fees.

20

Safe & accessible – We want you and your family to know that you and your belongings are in safe hands in our halls of residence. And, if you do have an emergency, all our halls have trained Student Wardens on duty overnight and during weekends and holidays.

We provide basic contents insurance for all residents living in our halls through Endsleigh Insurance – we’ll give you the details of the policy during your online induction. You can pay more for enhanced cover at any time. Each campus has a number of bedrooms that are wheelchair accessible and we’ll make reasonable adjustments to modify accommodation to suit particular needs. We operate a no smoking policy in all our residences and buildings. How to apply – We offer rooms to as many new full-time students who want to live in university accommodation as we can. From the March of your starting year, if you’ve firmly accepted an offer from us, you can apply for UCA accommodation through our Applicant Portal. It’s best to apply for accommodation as soon as possible, rather than waiting for your exam results in August. This will give you the best chance of getting the type of accommodation you’d like. The first allocation of university accommodation happens in May (you’ll need to apply by May 2018), and on a rolling basis after that – we’ll let you know by email as soon as possible. If you’ve been successful in your application, you’ll be able to view and accept your Accommodation Agreement through our online system. For more details, please visit: uca.ac.uk/accommodation

Applicant days

“Our Applicant Days have been especially designed to help you discover more about the course, campus and student experience.” Sarah Simms Head of Admissions

Our Applicant Days are a great opportunity for you to showcase your talent in a relaxed environment and to ask us any questions you might have. As part of the day you'll attend an interview with a member of your course team. They’ll want to look at your portfolio of work, so please remember to bring this with you. Our Portfolio Advice video on our website gives you some guidance in putting together your portfolio – visit uca.ac.uk/study/ portfolio-advice or turn to page 12 of this prospectus.

40

The Applicant Day usually consists of a welcome from the course leader, your individual interview, and a tour of the facilities and the campus. Depending on our students’ availability when you visit, we’ll try to show you students working in the predegree studios.

The day is a friendly and informal event, so wear whatever you feel comfortable in. On average, the Applicant Day takes about three hours, but you can take as long as you like to look around campus. You’re welcome to bring any guests with you, but please be aware that they will not be able to attend all aspects of the day with you, such as your interview. All the information about your Applicant Day will be emailed to you when your day has been scheduled. Once you receive this email, you should log into the Applicant Portal to access your Applicant Day Guide. Your guide will give you a full breakdown of the day, including a schedule of events, tips on what to bring with you, what to expect and how to prepare.
