WELCOME

The Times they are

a-Changin’

Welcome to the 2014 Edition of the Volume HAS ANOTHER YEAR REALLY GONE BY? Is it really time to bring our price list up to date? Are we going to get our crystal balls out again? Yes – all of these things are, as usual, in this years edition. We do have a few interesting technology articles. A bit of myth-busting and some general thoughts and muses from guest writers and staff for your general entertainment. Unilet Sound & Vision is now into its 45th year. That’s forty-five years of us looking at audio and video equipment and trying to understand it well enough so we can present it to you, our customers, in a sensible and jargon-free way.

“Gather ‘round people, wherever you roam. And admit that the waters around you have grown...” So, what is likely to be trending for the coming year? Lots of new and wonderous screens from Panasonic. We will see the quality of LED screens improve as we, in tandem, watch the slow demise of plasma. Will OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) finally see our shelves

We have seen many things change during those 45 years. The promise of new technologies is always interesting, sometimes exciting as well. Resisting change can be either wise and cautious or stupid and fool hardy, depending on your point of view. But when your life blood is all about change and ‘the new’ then Unilet will always do its best to embrace and present. Incidentally, dealing with the past and the old will also be covered but in another part of this years edition.

The title of this article takes its name from a Bob Dylan song. The first verse of that song reads: “Gather ‘round people, wherever you roam. And admit that the waters around you have grown...”

Not a prediction and definitely fact for some, but something to ponder on... The Unilet Team are always here to help and we look forward to seeing and hearing from you at some point over the coming year. In the meantime, check out our new website at www.unilet.net where you can register for updates on our upcoming news, events and offers. Cheers

Sonos How did we

survive before ?! I’m willing to bet that whilst some of you reading this will know what Sonos is and does, that a significant number of you will never have heard of it and might be wondering what all the fuss is about. I DON’T THINK IT’S TOO STRONG TO SAY that Sonos has in many respects, revolutionised how we access and control the music we listen to in the home. Before I explain about Sonos, just cast your mind back to around 8 years or so ago. How did you listen to, control, select and index your music? What did you listen to music on, the hi fi, the radio in the kitchen or bathroom, your i-Pod or mobile phone? Notice that the one item I didn’t mention directly above was your computer. Sonos approached us with their system at that time and it’s fair to say we didn’t know quite what to make of it.

Page 8

Here was a system based on the fact (which time has proven correct) that more and more people were using their computer as their main source of music, and which allowed that music to be transmitted all around the home using either a wired route (using existing CAT-5/ ethernet cabling) or better still, wirelessly, using the same technology as the wireless laptops we now take for granted. The fact that you could have different (or the same) piece of music playing almost anywhere in the home, with total control from again, almost anywhere (using their own remote control) was a revelation. Prior to the above, the only way to have

music everywhere was to install a multiroom music system, which normally entailed ripping out walls or floors to put in all the structured wiring, with the attendant mess and costs. You also had restrictions on control (with a few extremely expensive exceptions) and in general, most systems were a compromise. Since it’s inception, Sonos has continued to evolve. Control is now via any smartphone/ most tablets. Internet music services such as Spotify, Napster, Last.fm et al are a touch away. Then there’s internet radio, with thousands of stations from all around the world immediately available. And the sound quality ? More than good enough for the purpose and much better than you have any right to expect. Sonos is equally at home with either in-ceiling speakers or good quality budget speakers. At this point I’m sure some of you are wondering how is all the above achieved. What do I physically need ? What does the equipment look like ? What costs are involved? (surprisingly affordable), Is it THAT easy to install/use ? And so on. They say actions speak louder than words and in the case of Sonos, this is particularly true. Therefore, pop into the shop and see whether or not Sonos is that good. Play around with it to your hearts content and ask

Sonos’ HiFi wireless speakers and audio components allow the user to play the same music every room simultaneously using just one app .

as many questions as you like. If an analogue “dinosaur” like myself is passionate about it, then there’s hope for everyone!

The Importance of Internet

Connectivity

– For ‘Smart Enabled’ Appliances SINCE THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ‘HOME COMPUTER’, in its various development guises, one major application has by far and away become important to us. The Internet and subsequently Ethernet transmission of data. The principles of Ethernet transmission were developed by Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Centre ) USA, some 40 years ago, between 1973 – 1974. It has taken all of this time pain and intellectual genius, to get data rates increased from the original 10 megabits per second to 100 gigabits per second. So why am I so interested in bringing this to your attention? The reason is as follows… Many of today’s electronic appliances are ‘Smart‘ enabled. This means that if connected to your Internet Router, whether wired or wirelessly you will have internet functionality with that product. Let’s take, as an example, your new flat screen TV. Put the new screen on it’s stand. Plug in the mains and the aerial lead. Tune it in and the next stage of the self-install asks for a ‘Network’ connection.......Panic! A smart TV device is either a television set with integrated Internet capabilities

Page 10

or a set-top box for television that offers more advanced computing ability and connectivity than a contemporary basic television set. This simply means that this appliance has an in-built browser that has internet functionality. It may also have the ability to run applications (apps.) Also, depending on how advanced the computer processor is within the TV you can browse the web and also stream internet video to your TV, from the comfort of your sofa (YouTube, Netflix, Skype etc.). This requires you to either hard wire your

STAFF FEATURE TV to your router or be able to connect it via ‘Wi-Fi’. Many devices can use Wi-Fi, e.g., personal computers, video-game consoles, smartphones, some digital cameras, tablet computers and digital audio players. These can connect to a network resource such as the Internet via a wireless access point. This requires your router to have a wireless protocol to start with. Once the device is connected, other factors will

“Most electronic devices we use today are as much a computer as they are an audio or video device.” present themselves. The limiting factor will be speed and wireless ‘dead spots’! The safe and secure way to overcome these challenges is to hard wire your TV (or other items). If your router is close to the TV, no problem. If it is far away from the TV then you won’t want to trail a cable to that location. One of the simplest solutions is to use a ‘HomePlug’. BT has been using this technology for years. They were then called ‘Powerline Adaptors’. This device uses your mains to support networking over your existing home electrical wiring. Several device specifications exist under the HomePlug name, with each offering unique performance capabilities and coexistence supported by ‘The HomePlug Alliance’ (the HomePlug Powerline Alliance is a trade association of electronics manufacturers) who have aided in the development of this technology.

Page 12

Netgear’s Universal WiFi Range Extender

The alliance developed standards for applications such as in-home distribution of TV, gaming and Internet access. This is in the form of a transmitter plugged into the wall socket near the router, both being joined by an Ethernet cable. The other device (receiver) plugged into the mains socket near the TV, with an Ethernet lead from the receiver to the corresponding socket on the TV or Smart Device. This device uses the mains to distribute Internet in a stable and secure manner. Because of the frequencies the HomePlug devices use, there is no cause for concern regarding mains interference (we are more than happy to explain technical merits of this technology). This leads on to explain where Internet connected products are going. Existing equipment can almost repair or update itself with ‘software updates’. The updates are delivered for ‘free’ in the form of “Firmware”. Firmware, generally speaking, refers to the programs that help

is left on a cycle – it’s perfect for setting the machine going from your office, to be done as you walk through the door. If your Smart Washing machine and TV is on the same network it could communicate with a pop-up message on your screen telling you that the washing was done! I digress! What is happening as we speak, is that mobile phones, Tablets and iPads, are able to have Apps that can control a multitude of devices. Are you ready to embrace the technology?

“select a cycle and set the machine going!”

We at Unilet are more than happy to make sure solutions are in place for you and in the surroundings your appliances are used.

a device do what it’s supposed to do; it’s the background programming that runs the appliance. Most electronic devices we use today are as much a computer as they are an audio or video device. As such, sometimes the manufacturer makes improvements to those programs that run the device (firmware). These improvements are released as firmware updates. We can expect to see firmware updates for everything from our TV and Blu-ray players to our video gaming consoles. What does the future hold? Well, Wi-Fi enabled washing machines, the Smart Washer app takes on a whole new lease of life. The Smart Control function can connect to your washing machine even when you’re out of the house, and lets you select a cycle and set the machine going, as well as showing you how long

“ As the present now will later be past....... And the first one now will later be last.....” - Bob Dylan ON THE COVER OF THIS YEARS MAGAZINE is a pictorial flowchart of Hi-Fi source components from the dawn of recorded sound until the present day. The last image you will have noticed is of those all too easily recognised idevices and tablets.

“All Things Must Pass” George Harrison

The Future: The future of many things, not just audio and video, will be fairly and squarely operating in the digital domain (really?..... no s**t Sherlock!...Ed). The internet plays an increasingly intrinsical part in both searching for and acquiring both the soft and hardware you want and need. (Any more obvious statements?...Ed). Yes, probably, but bear with me. CDs started the digital revolution for most of us, although it was in answer to the recording industry adopting digital formatting in the late ‘70’s. The CD is almost 32 years old and still hanging on...but so is vinyl and FM radio.

The CD player, like the record player and the radio tuner are all source components in a Hi-Fi system. The quality of sound is variable and also hotly debated. But the source for your tunes is changing. It might now be a digital media player or server of some description. You might be storing your tunes on a hard drive, a USB stick or SD card. You could be using an iPod or your smartphone as a source. All of these things store and work in the digital domain. All of the sourcing comes from the internet which is inherently digital. You then have to convert all of these different digital files into something you can recognise. So you need a DAC (Digital to Analogue Converter) which could also be argued to be a source component. Once you’ve got this far, you can now guide

Page 14

music to anywhere in your house wirelessly which, you’ve guessed it, uses a digital codec. For those videophiles amongst you, the same has happened for movies and TV programmes. The quality is getting better and the acquisition becoming easier and faster as, seemingly, every month goes by. So, this is all very brilliant and full of the promise of wonderful sounding things, like 24bit audio files and 4K video files, but there is a problem...a very big problem actually.

“A hole, is a hole, is a hole....”

But the real point is that it is all music. All sources, whether digital or analogue have their pros and cons. All manufacturers claim (usually empirically) that their version of that source is the defacto product, but here’s the problem I referred to earlier. It doesn’t matter if you can’t hear it. So we need two fundamental components to facilitate the sound. Hole 1 – An amplifier Hole 2 – Loudspeakers (or headphones) Without either of these, the system won’t work. It would be like designing the fastest and most beautiful car in the world and, regardless of how the engine worked, not thinking about some sort of torque

Richard Burton

A few weeks ago, I was asked by a customer where I thought we would be with all of this stuff in twenty years time. My answer was an honest “I don’t know...anyway I’ll be long retired by then”. As usual with someone of my age, that question led me to think about where we were twenty years ago. If I was told then that in 20 years time we would be downloading and streaming high bitrate digital audio files from our computers over something called the internet, I, like most people at that time, would have laughed my face off. If you would then have told me that some respected and informed people would also call it “Hi-Fi”, I would have been rolling around the floor holding my sides and pleading with you to “Stop!”.

Hole 1 - might be filled by Yamaha’s A-S3000 Integrated Map

Hole 2 - might be filled by Bowers & Wilkins PM1 Loudspeakers

Page 15

STAFF FEATURE conversion device and the wheels! These two components have been around since the beginning of recorded sound. So let’s deal with the amplifier first.

“Maturity is knowing that the volume knob also turns to the left!” J.M. Wright All source compenents, digital or analogue, output their signals in tiny values. In most cases, only 2-5volts. Not nearly enough to make a pair of ‘speakers work. So an amplifier is absolutely essential, however large or small. What do you think drives those tiny speakers in the bottom of your smart phone? Various designs apply both to analogue and digital, but all do the same thing. They boost the current to pulse a voice coil to move a driver in a loudspeaker. Does it necessarily follow that the larger and most expensive amplifiers are the best? No, not really. It is actually about relativity. Matching an appropriately powered amplifier to the requirements of any given loudspeaker, which neatly segues into hole number 2.

frequency and dynamic range, then I’m afraid it does matter. We are not necessarily talking about the kind of monitor/PA stack you would see at a rock concert, but we are talking about a loudspeaker array that can produce a ‘true to life’ sound. I have spoken to a number of eminent speaker designers over the years and the short answer to this question is “it can’t be done”... Don’t forget that any recorded music is simply a version of the original performance. No amplifier/loudspeaker combination can perfectly reproduce the live performance. However, that is not what the playing of music at home is necessarily about. It is about making a sound that you are happy with despite the obvious constraints. Am I advocating sonic compromise? Well, yes and no. As a wizened old audiophile I would encourage anybody to achieve the best possible reproduction they can, regardless of the source. The only way to do that properly is to make sure that the amplifier and loudspeaker/headphone combination is present and correct.

Page 16

Let’s go back to the opening paragraph of this diatribe and that icon of phones and tablets. Some of you may remember that late last year Unilet held an open weekend and

“Regardless of age, gender, audiophile or non-audiophile, type of music or age of the recording, one thing was very clear.” issued an analogue vs digital challenge to all who were interested. The end result was pretty conclusive. Before I reveal that result I should point out that all of the source components were extremely expensive and state of the art. We made sure that the amplification and loudspeakers were generally accepted as “a bit good”. The conclusion was irrevocable. Regardless of age, gender, audiophile, non-audiophile, type of music or age of the recording, one thing

was very clear. Everyone preferred the sound of vinyl – even if the original recording was digital! However, most also said that digital storage and playback is more convenient, less cluttered, less life invasive and were prepared to make the compromise sonically. Interesting, eh?...Should that last box on the cover of our magazine really be a record player, not a phone? If yes then have we come full circle? No! I’m saying that whether you are a Loaderist, Streamerist, Tunerist, Portablist or a Flufferist* then let us help you get it right, but remember, it will only ever be as good as the two oldest things we’ve ever had for recorded sound...the amplifier and the loudspeaker. *See Glossary of Terms for definitions.

Day in the Life

A

of Antony Michaelson, CEO, Musical Fidelity

‘God knows why anybody would want my opinion on anything?’, I thought when Vernon asked me to write an article about ‘anything that took my fancy’. For a start, that sort of thing wouldn’t really be suitable for a family magazine. Briskly moving on from that sensitive and, possibly stimulating, topic, what could I write about? MY OPINIONS ABOUT HI FI HAVE BEEN CIRCULATED widely so reiterating those again might prove tiresome for all of us, me included. Advertising and marketing gurus insist that continual repetition is the way to reinforce a brand’s message. But, quite frankly, I can’t be arsed. Terrible isn’t it? I won’t bow down to the holy god of marketing. Back to the original problem…what to talk about? As it happens the day before Vernon asked me to write I had had a wonderful music filled day at the Wigmore Hall. Those of you who know about the venue could take a break here whilst I explain it to everybody else. Perhaps you could make a cup of tea or have a quick nap and re-join us later? The Wigmore Hall is a small 550 seater Concert Hall in, oddly enough, Wigmore Street, London, W1. It has the most

Page 18

wonderful acoustic. Magical almost. When you play there (and I have) the sound seems to float from your instrument and blossom in front of you. It really is that special an experience. As a listener the sound is rich and warm, not in the slightest bit boomy, just pure music to the ears. It was built in 1901 for the Bechstein Piano Company and named, again not surprisingly, Bechstein Hall. These guys are really original with their naming aren’t they? The architect was Thomas Collcutt who designed many fine interior spaces such as the Savoy Hotel and the super luxury liners of the

early twentieth century. His thing was the Neo-Renaissance style. Some find it a little elaborate but, personally, I find it beautiful. From the outset the hall’s acoustics were admired. Great artists of the time loved playing there and audiences were appreciative of the sound and the music. Everything went swimmingly until the First World War when the UK government forced Bechstein (as it was a German company) out of business. The hall was sold to, of all people…Debenhams for a knock down price. It was they that wittily named it the Wigmore Hall. The thing about the hall is the exquisite sound and the intimacy of the musical experience. If you have never been there please find a concert that appeals to you and go.

millions of pounds and owned by the Fulton Collection who lent it to James Ehnes.

If the sleepers and tea makers could re-join us now I think we are probably ready. Just a quick re-cap. I was about to tell you about the wonderful musical day I had at the Wigmore Hall but got diverted talking about the hall itself. On that musical Monday I went to a BBC lunchtime concert and then a piano recital in the evening. The BBC lunchtime concerts are an institution which are a credit to the BBC and our culture. They have great artists playing for just an hour at lunchtime, and the tickets are not expensive. Not very much to be able to hear top musical talent. On that Monday the performer was James Ehnes playing Beethoven and Brahms violin sonatas. Unfortunately the pianist was indisposed and, being a real professional trouper, James Ehnes gave a solo violin recital. He is one of today’s greatest living violinists, and plays the Marsick Stradivarius (made in 1715). The violin itself is worth many

A solo violin recital? Surely that wouldn’t have much variety or musical interest? After all how much tonal, harmonic and melodic variety can one instrument produce? Quite a lot as it turns out. When you get right down to it the harmonic and melodic “bone structure” of small and large ensembles aren’t very different. There is a big difference in volume and tone colour but when you get right down to the blood and guts of the music it really is the same. James Ehnes produced an extraordinary demonstration of a vast variety of tone colours with an almost unbelievable dynamic range. Last year I went to a fantastic concert with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra where I was awestruck to hear a crescendo (that’s going from soft to loud) spanning about 16 bars. A really riveting experience. And, god help me, I heard James Ehnes on just one violin do exactly the same trick as the whole Leipzig

James Ehnes

Page 19

GUEST WRITER Gewandhaus Orchestra. Not too shabby! The melodic and harmonic complexity of the Bach partitas is on a par with almost everything written. So what you have is a monster composition compressed for one instrument. Or, perhaps we might look at it the other way and say large orchestral compositions are just pumped up smaller scale works. There is plenty of meat to debate here. The 1715 Marsick Stradivarius leads me to a subject oddly connected with Hi-Fi. Stradivarius violins are incredibly valuable and viewed as a sort of Holy Grail. There are many other fabulous violins which don’t have “the name” and are not nearly so valuable. As a result there have been extensive tests to try and establish if there

Page 20

is, in fact, any real difference between a Stradivarius and other high quality (not nearly as valuable) instruments. The detailed measurements showed that there were no practical differences in the sound. The Strad fans countered that (here we are in Hi-Fi land) they didn’t care about the measurements they knew that the Strads sounded better. So more tests were conducted where different makes of violin were played to an audience who couldn’t see what they were listening to. Not surprisingly the Strad didn’t do any better than any of the others. But still the Stradivisti (as I call them) insisted that the beautiful, rare, exquisite Strad somehow sounded better and justified its elevated price. Sounds just like Hi-Fi to me!

Last year I went to a Sokolov recital in Cologne. Another wonderful Concert Hall but just to give us a laugh the architect built it underground but apparently forgot that there was a children’s play area above it. It quickly became apparent that this was rather a serious oversight. People were sitting in the Hall expecting complete hush and had the rather unnerving experience of hearing children’s playground noises projected into the Hall. Great stuff isn’t it? Now when you go there the area above the Hall is fenced off with guards to make sure that nobody walks above it. Don’t you love it?

…and those are just the ones that come to mind. To hear any of them live is an extraordinary experience. It is hardly

“(CD recordings) ... are wonderful but pale into insignificance when compared to the real life experience of hearing the great man in front of you. It is almost like a religious experience.” Back to Sokolov. The concert was breathtaking. At the end the audience was so enthusiastic that he was forced to do seven encores. That’s an enormous amount. The thing was that they were so ecstatic that they were stamping on the ground to demand that he came back to take more bows and give more encores. They simply wouldn’t let him go. Sokolov does not do studio recordings. The only CDs available are of his live concerts. They are wonderful but pale into insignificance when compared to the real life experience of hearing the great man in front of you. It is almost like a religious experience. The full capacity audience (his concerts always seem to be sold out) fall into silence as the lights are dimmed, Sokolov walks on to the stage, gives a cursory bow, sits down and plays. Somehow he communicates that applause is not expected between pieces. The audience sits there absorbing and, in an odd way, somehow participating in the music making. Usually, when he has finished he indicates that he is ready to receive their applause. I know it sounds incredibly stage managed and melodramatic but it doesn’t feel that way

when you are there. Back to the Monday evening Wigmore Hall concert given by Volodin. He is a relatively young artist of staggering ability and musicianship. The first half of the concert was given over to the Bach Goldberg Variations, one of the greatest achievements of Western art music. The second half was Debussy and Ravel. The Goldberg variations were given a fabulous performance in the Russian style of committed full bodied playing. When he finished the audience erupted in applause. Behind me a sour faced old geezer was heard to say “oh, but his playing lacks inner spirituality”…I jumped as if I had an electric shock as I thought “what is wrong with these people?”. I very nearly grabbed him by the hand to pull him up to the platform and tell the audience that he thought he could do it better and we should all sit there and listen, but I flunked it and left it alone. I know that everybody is entitled to their opinion but it really made me grind my teeth”. The Debussy and Ravel in the second half were exquisitely subtle and perfectly executed. Our lemon sucking friend was heard to say “he fared better in the pieces”. Fists clenched I ignored his pitiful attempts to draw attention to himself but, in a way his risible presence acted as a wonderful foil to the transcendental brilliance I had just heard. What a day! I slept like a baby and woke the next morning spiritually refreshed, ready to attend to another exciting day at MF reminded of exactly why we existed. What our true purpose is……to serve the music.

“HiFi To Go ...?” When normally talking about HiFi we often think of large speakers, an expensive amplifier and a CD player to match the rest of the system. A set of interconnects and some speaker cable that will make the selection of electronics sing! Sure, we can of course still do that but we are now spending more and more time offering up the benefits of a streaming solution. WE ARE ABLE TO SUGGEST SIMPLE SOLUTIONS where you can do away with your CD player, substituting it with a unit which can control the music you wish to listen to from your phone or tablet. The benefits to this are substantial. You get to simply browse your existing music library, access music from the internet/cloud and also listen to hundreds of thousands of internet radio stations. We love the fact that Sonos – a popular multi-room streaming solution - is a perfect partner for easily accessing your music catalogue, so too are the Simple Audio range of products. Once you have experience of a streaming solution in your system I can pretty much guarantee you won’t look back. These solutions are great to simply and easily offer an interface to your music, but (for some) don’t provide the best quality sound available. If you would like to improve on their performance then cunningly we can introduce something called a DAC. A DAC (Digital to Analogue Converter) is capable of doing the donkey work of converting those lovely noughts and ones into what you

Page 26

actually hear. This can vastly improve the sound from a streaming solution and for not a great deal of extra cost.

DAB the Future? It’s been at least a couple of years since I’ve had a (veiled) rant about DAB (Digital Radio Broadcasting) in our august publication, so I thought I’d return to the subject to try and bring you up to date with the shenanigans surrounding mainly the switch-over from analogue radio – If it ever happens! MOST OF YOU OUT THERE would not have been aware of the crucial conference that took place at BBC Broadcasting House, London on the 15th December

last year, which was chaired by Ed Vaisey, who is the Minister for Culture, Communications & Creative Industries (Phew !) The commercial radio trade body, the Radio Centre, which represents most of the big commercial radio groups was hoping that the Minister would announce a switch-over date as early as 2018, whereas smaller radio groups (who seem to be having an increasing influence on proceedings), including UTV Media (Talk Sports Parent company) were looking for an indefinite postponement of the switch-over due to fears over loss of local stations, and associated consumer costs for households to convert to digital radio.

“there are still an estimated 100 million (yes!) analogue radio sets out there” Page 30

Connect. With the Future...

- aptX Bluetooth streaming input - Increased output for greater power and clarity - Improved circuitry for greater efficiency - Even better sound performance

The award-winning Roksan K2 series has now been expanded to include a new integrated amplifier. The K2 BT improves on the original K2 Integrated with brand new circuitry and a higher output than ever before. The inclusion of aptX® technology also adds a whole new source input to the amplifier. Now you can stream your favourite music from a Bluetooth-enabled device in original 16-bit CD quality.

STAFF FEATURE As it was, the Minister announced a “target” date of 2020, when he hoped that if certain “criteria “ could be fulfilled , the switch-over could start to take place. So the question you may ask is, why all the chaos/ indecision over this subject? Well I think a substantial part of this could be explained by two other comments the Minister also made during the conference, namely This exercise has to be “listener led” and “I’m not going to impose a solution on people who aren’t ready for it.” The second of those, in particular is the key one for me. This is made all the more obvious when there are still an estimated 100 million (yes !) analogue radio sets out there, with various surveys still showing

that people in general are happy with radio provision as it stands- digital or analogue. Also, the aforementioned criteria are also proving more difficult for the radio industry to meet than anticipated. Despite some reports to the contrary, we are still some way off the “target” figure of 50% of all listening to radio via one of the digital platforms (DAB, Digital TV or the Internet).

“The real fly in the ointment here is the humble (or not) motor car.”

STAFF FEATURE The real fly in the ointment here is the humble (or not) motor car. Cars account for approximately 20% of all radio listening, and despite the fact that almost 50% of new cars now have DAB fitted, fewer than 10% of all cars can receive digital radio. Again, add to this the cost of converting an existing car to receive DAB (not all can be), plus the inconsistent coverage of DAB over the UK (more of an issue in the car) and it’s clear where some of the inertia against change is coming from. The Minister is still very much committed to Digital Radio and part of this commitment is a possible introduction of a second, national digital multiplex with even more stations for you to choose from- ask yourself, do you think we need even more stations to choose from ?

Page 34

I think you all know my own views on DAB in general. All considerations of quality have been buried under a wealth of commercial considerations. However, politics is also a key player here as analogue radio supporters are a small (but increasingly important) voting group that any future Culture Minister is wary of provoking. Also (surprisingly), there hasn’t been the expected interest in the spare bandwidth that the switch-over would (in theory) provide. If you add all of the above into the mix, it’s no wonder the future of DAB is so unclear. I believe the switch-over will happen, but when and how is anyone’s guess. Continue to enjoy analogue radio whilst you have it !

“Communication ...” communication /kǝ,mju:ni’keıſǝn/ n. (pl. s) 1 From the latin “communicare” meaning to share. It is the activity of conveying information by any means available to you.

HOW DO YOU LET THE PEOPLE WHO ARE IMPORTANT TO YOU know how the world is with you? And, likewise, enquire how the world is with them? A whole new communication genre given the umbrella title of Social

The

Psycholgy

of Buying

No, I haven’t been to university since last year (none would have me!) but the whole process of why we buy things has always fascinated me and has led to many an interesting discussion with you - the customer. OF COURSE, YOU HAVE WHAT’S KNOWN AS THE OBVIOUS “distress purchase”, where the only psychology involved is whether or not you still want one of your kitchen utilities bouncing across the floor and continually flooding it (the 15 year old washing machine) or the neighbours threatening you with grievous bodily harm

as the smell of defrosting prawns wafts down the street (the 20 year old fridge/ freezer). At the other end of the scale is the clearly “indulgent purchase” which we all make, normally as a short term boost (a bit like a happy pill), although for some, the lack

“The buying decision was now being jointly made between couples” Page 42

of the latest car, phone or named fashion may well cause more distress than the examples above ! This leaves us with purchases that don’t appear to fall into the categories above, and which constitute the majority of our buying, although food is the one obvious item that covers all areas, in that it’s necessary, can be indulgent, but for a great many is simply “fuel” and a very matter of fact purchase. Consumer electronics (which includes what we sell) is another area where buying can stretch from distress (I can’t live without that 65” Plasma TV) to indulgence (I want that 65” Plasma TV), so, we have the same product, but totally different reasons for buying ... why? I spent 10 years out of the industry during the “nineties” and on my return in 2000 it became clear that two things had fundamentally changed; The buying decision was now being jointly made between couples, rather than being the “male” preserve, which led onto; The aesthetics of the item being just as important as it’s actual function. This initially came as quite a shock to me, as up until this time the customers main concern was primarily either the picture or sound quality. However, on further thought, it all started to make sense as we all now have expectations regarding the overall quality of product (Some will remember wonderful sounding products from the past that looked like they’d been built by a 5 year old

KEF’s modern, bold speakers make a statement

using Lego and Meccano bits !) This move away from the core purpose of the product then leads onto the other reasons for buying it. Yes, we’ve discussed aesthetics, but we then get into the area of want (emotional ?) vs need (practical/ indulgent) Hi Fi in particular presents the buyer with a number of questions, especially as the issue of sound quality itself is so subjective. Throw in childhood dreams of owning Hi Fi better than your parents (emotional), making sure your partner doesn’t threaten to leave you as the number of boxes start to crawl across the floor towards you (indulgent) and cabling you could hang an elephant from (practical?), it’s no wonder that I’ve had many a deep conversation with customers that have almost turned into therapy sessions! Finally, I’ve tried to keep the article relatively light hearted, but the next time you go to buy anything ask yourself: Why?

Raising the (Sound) Bar

Three years ago, I wrote an article in the Volume describing the cinematic experience at the Empire cinema in Leicester Square which kick started my fascination with film and the technology behind it. IT COULDN’T HAVE BEEN MORE THAN A YEAR LATER (late 1995 perhaps?) when I had an equally impressive experience at an electronics store on the Tottenham Court Road... My friend and I stopped to pick up some AA batteries for a somewhat decrepit Sony Walkman which had slowed down in speed during the Tube journey and stopped altogether somewhere around Kennington. After purchasing, I fumbled to get the packet open. We were standing in the main showroom near a member of staff who was about to demonstrate a massive 32 inch (!) TV to a prospective customer. He rifled through what looked like a stack of LP’s and pulled

out ‘Return of the Jedi’...”one of those Star Wars films” I tutted to myself.

“Films on vinyl?” Apparently not. This 12’’ mirrored slab was a LaserDisc, and from the moment the shop assistant hit play, I instantly understood the popularity of Star Wars amongst those who had seen it theatrically. The sound of those speeder bikes blasted through the showroom and zoomed overhead in awesome surround sound. I was clearly not the only one impressed, as the people in the shop broke from their browsing to crowd into this impromptu demonstration, from which I learned three things... n

This was like being at the cinema (albeit on a smaller scale)

n

It was attainable for home use.

n

I couldn’t afford it (but hey, at least it had a price)

Call it fate... ...but please don’t call it embellishment, for I kid you not, on the very same day some 15

Page 44

PMC’s surround system

minutes later I walked into Virgin Megastore and happened upon a magazine called ‘Home Cinema Choice’ which (purely by coincidence) was on issue #1. I quickly snapped it up and over the next three years, educated myself on Laserdisc, AC-3 digital, RF demodulators and rear projection TV’s. I spent every month poring over stuff that was off limits to a teenager...a sentiment shared by my friend who was himself an avid reader of FHM. The introduction of the DVD (Digital

Versatile Disc) was an undeniable game changer for the AV industry. Certainly a more manageable format than LaserDisc and not as much of a wallet buster for early adopters. It was a prime example of downsizing without compromise, and brought about the downfall of the humble VHS. Fast forward to today, and it seems that downsizing is now the overriding factor... It’s no secret that early AV equipment was the domain of the enthusiast. The back end of a home cinema amplifier looked like a telephone switchboard from the 1940’s. And if that wasn’t bad enough, this didn’t even include video connections! For video, we had the chunky SCART cable which was the python amongst the nest of vipers that quickly accumulated behind the equipment rack. This was a situation which people either persisted with or avoided altogether. By the time the HDMI cable addressed these shortcomings by combining digital video with audio, the gap in the market was soon to be patched by the arrival of the ‘soundbar’, providing sound to those who

Page 45

STAFF FEATURE wanted a better audio experience but were wrongly put off by the outdated stigma associated with long redundant equipment.

enough to take it up as a hobby and spend my first three pay cheques to make it a reality at home? Definitely not.

As TV’s got thinner and thinner, the laws of physics limited the quality of sound those TV’s could produce, so it’s no surprise then that even the smallest, most cost effective soundbar could sit beneath a screen and improve upon the ‘built-in’ audio system of the TV. It seems that in their relentless pursuit of a perfect picture, display manufacturers never stood back far enough to observe the ‘whole’ picture.

There truly is no substitute for loudspeakers and amplification (whether small or large), and if you’ve been out of the loop for a while, you would be stunned how simple the connections are, how effectively they can stream audio over your network from your mobile devices, and how easy they are to set up.

“Sound is 50 percent of the movie-going experience...” George Lucas In spite of his latter-day mishaps (Phantom Menace anyone?), the Star Wars creator was absolutely right. If I’d heard that demo in 1995 on a soundbar, I would admit to being impressed. But would it have wowed me

Speaker options are now broader than they’ve ever been, with on-wall (even in-wall) options to ensure everything is completely hidden. Add a little Unilet expertise into the mix and you’re on the red carpet toward an Oscar winning system. As the magazine title suggests, Home Cinema is very much a choice... If you love film and TV, and want to really connect with it, this would be a very wise and rewarding choice indeed.

GLOSSARY

Glossary of Technical Terms 3

3D

The extra visual dimension. Creates depth of field in an image either passively or actively. You need glasses regardless. Over to you.

4

4K-2K

Burgeoning video upscaling from existing HD standard (1920x1080 pixels) to 4096x2048 pixels or Ultra HD.

A

Active

This is a loudspeaker design which typically has a crossover & amplifier built-in. They can be connected directly to a pre-amplifier and both require a mains connection. More complex designs employ a powered crossover which splits the audio frequency at signal level ‘before’ being sent to the amplifier, allowing for greater resolution when compared to ‘passive’ loudspeaker designs.

Aggressive Not a hard sell or a smack on the nose, but a Hi-Fi system that has a tendency to over-expose the higher frequencies. AirPlay

Another Apple protocol for wirelessly streaming data between Apple products. Recently licenced out to other clients.

Ambience

A sense of “space” or “venue” within a recording.

Amplifier

The engine of any Hi-Fi or Home Theatre. It receives the very low level signals output from sources such as CD players, Turntables, Tuners, DVD players etc. and increases the signal so that the current is high enough to make the loudspeakers work. Various designs apply, and usually include a volume control.

Analogue

The domain in which we all hear and see.

Analytical

Something to do with your state of mind and the resultant medical care required to remedy it.

Anamorphic Because most film negatives are a different shape than the widescreen (16:9) this process modifies the negative so that the whole of the frame is viewed. App

Apple Lossless

or Application. Computer software programs that can be used on smart phones, laptops etc. Most Home Cinema manufacturers now have ‘Control Apps’ to drive their equipment. A fruit farmer who has been well and truly ‘scrumped’. Not really. This is Apple’s clever little compression system for getting music on to their devices in slightly better quality than MP3. However, lossless it ain’t.

B

Aspect Ratio This is the correlation between the height and the width of a screen or negative. Attack Nothing to do with Pvt. Jones from “Dad’s Army” shouting “They don’t like it up ‘em Mr. Mainwaring” but the Hi-Fi systems ability to reproduce the percussive nature of any note. Balanced Nothing to do with your general demeanour, but a professional connector. 3-Pin Earthed, Click-Fit. If your kit has it, use it. Bass-Reflex A speaker cabinet design that utilises a port which aids in extending the bass response Bi-Amping Where each drive unit of a loudspeaker is driven by a separate amplifier. Bi-Wiring

This can give some of the benefits of Bi-Amping but at a lower cost. The design on many loudspeakers will allow separate runs of speaker cable to each drive unit.

Bit-Depth

Simply refers to the number of bits used per sample. CD Audio has a bit depth of 16 up to a theoretical 24bits for higher resolution audio files.

Bitrate

A Digital Audio file is measured in kilobits per second (kbps). Theoretically, the higher the bitrate the better the quality.

Bluetooth

Neither the name of a pirate or a dental problem, but a connector for transmitting data wirelessly between devices. AptX is an upgrade to the existing Bluetooth standard, offering higher quality audio transmission. Kleer is a similar alternative.

Blu-Ray

Not a Pornographic Sci-Fi movie but a High Definition Video format that comes dangerously close to emulating the original film print, and with studio quality audio to boot.

Body

Carmen Electra, Sophia Loren, Elle McPherson...Oh sorry! I drifted away there. This means a fullness of sound. The opposite of thin (Kate Moss)

Boom or Boomy

Exaggerated Low or Bass frequencies. Can be caused by poor loudspeaker placement or the acoustic of a particular room.

Bright

Much the same as Aggressive. The Hi-Fi system is exaggerating the high frequencies. The sound becomes edgy and irritating. The long-term affect can dislodge a filling or two.

Page 66

C

Cartridge

Stylus and armature arrangement for playing vinyl records. Various designs apply moving magnet, moving coil & moving iron. Very old fashioned, but brilliant.

C.I.E.M.

Custom In Ear Monitor Headphone earpiece that moulds it’s shape to your ear.

Clinical

Presentation is overly accurate at the expense of musicality. Taken to excess can produce a very ‘sterile’ sound.

Cloud

White or grey. Fluffy. Sometimes wet. Up in the sky. Aka, the Internet.

Co-Axial

A 75ohm balanced cable construction which can be used to send electrical or digital information.

Colouration Any change in the character of sound which makes a note or instrument sound unnatural. Compression Don’t worry about the technicalities. Just take it from me - You don’t want it - it’s horrible. Crossover

D

Dark

A circuit board found inside a loudspeaker which splits the incoming signal to the individual drive units. High frequencies to the “tweeter”. Bass to the “woofer” Opposite of bright, or the fuse has blown.

D.A.B.

Digital Audio Broadcast. Digital Radio to you and me.

DAB+

Next generation of DAB (Digital Radio). Specifications indicate a significant upgrade in audio quality. Most existing DAB receivers are not forward compatible. No UK dates.

D.A.C.

Digital to Analogue Converter. This little gizmo turns all of those ‘0’s’ and ‘1’s’ into something we recognise. Simple eh? Err. No, not really. Maybe later.

Decibel

dB. Measurement of sound pressure.

Detail

Or the Low Level Detail, Definition, Transparency or Transparent...all mean the same thing. You can never have enough detail!!

Digital

A binary file used to compress anything analogue for easier storage. (See D.A.C.)

Digital FLAC, WAV, WMA, ALAC, MP3, Audio Files ATRAC. These are all versions of the same thing. They are all compressed digital storage files. Their individual qualities and abilities are hotly debated by audiophiles.

D.L.P.

Digital Light Processing and is one of several different types of projector technology.

Dolby

Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital, Dolby Surround and Dolby Pro-Logic are all variations of principally the same thing. These are used as compression systems, mainly in the film industry, to get the original multi-channel soundtrack onto the film format with very little loss of quality (Dolby TrueHD is termed as Lossless).

DSD

Direct Stream Digital – Originally an alternative codec to MLP invented by Sony for the SACD format. More and more DAC’s are adding DSD compatibility to their roster of features.

DTS

Digital Theatre Systems. This is an alternative to Dolby. The differences are hotly debated.

DTS-HD Master Audio

Equivalent to Dolby TrueHD, i.e. Lossless Film Audio. Many argue it’s better than Dolby.

D.X.D.

Digital Extreme Definition Digital editing site for DSD.

D.V.B.

Digital Video Broadcasting. Digital (Freeview) TV to you and me.

DVD

Digital Versatile Disc. Been around since 1998. Now usurped by Blu-ray in every way.

DVD-Audio High resolution audio format also capable of surround as well as stereo, which had at one time been thought to replace CD.

E

Dynamic

A system’s ability to reproduce the contrasts between quiet and loud with energy and dynamism.

Dynamic Range

The difference between the quiet and the loud parts of a piece of music measured in decibels.

Electrostatic A specific type of loudspeaker which utilizes a membrane or filament suspended in a statically charged field. Where this design can be limited in frequency range it’s one great virtue is very low distortion. Ethernet

Standardized hard-wire connection for computer networks, now widely used for Audio & Video streaming.

Euphonic

A very “en vogue” word. We think it is describing the inherent distortions and colourations found in most valve designs. We don’t have a problem with ear friendly distortions and colourations; we just think the word is gobbledygook.

Page 67

GLOSSARY

F

Flufferist

One who removes fluff & dust from his stylus before and after playing a record

Focus

A 1970’s Progressive Jazz/Rock band from Holland. A small family car and a defunct chain of DIY Stores.

Imaging

Impedance This is the measurement of resistance to the alternating current (AC) in an electrical circuit and expressed as ohms. A loudspeaker offers a resistance to the amplifier, therefore limiting its capabilities. The lower the resistive value of a speaker, the more current is required from the amplifier, therefore the harder the speaker is to drive.

Forwardness See Aggressive. Freesat

Free to air digital TV from same satellite as Sky (Astra 2). HD availability.

Freeview

Free to air digital TV utilizing existing aerial connections.

Frequency See Frequency Response Range

G H

Speak to a Wrestler

Grunt HD Audio

A device that plays media (be it audio or visual) over a network. Simples.

N.F.F.

No Fault Found (See Keith)

O O.L.E.D.

Organic Light Emitting Diode Next Gen TV screens that will ultimately supersede LCD & Plasma.

Q R RCA/ Phono/

Quadraphonic A precursor to surround sound which required 4 equal channels.

Various names for standard 2-Pin line level connector. Single-Ended

Open(ness) Relates generally to the mid and high frequencies. Presented properly, they can give a sense of airiness and space within a given sound stage.

Recession

Optical

O.T.G.

On-The-Go. Dedicated digital audio only out for Android devises.

Oversampling Standard sampling rates are 44.1kHz (CD), 48kHz (DVD), 96kHz (Blu-ray & Uncompressed LPCM). Oversampling is the process of doubling the native sample rate of any given format (in some cases, more than double), in an effort to (allegedly) improve resolution and reduce noise. We are not convinced about the latter, but people do like a big number.

P

The highest safe power for speakers measured in watts. Great fun to exceed.

Progressive A system which gives clearer, Scan flicker free images from DVD/Blu-Ray in comparison with the conventional horizontal line refresh system.

Meridian Lossless Packing – Originally an alternative codec to DSD invented by Meridian Audio for the DVD-Audio format.

Seismic

A word used to describe ultra-low bass frequencies. Alternatively, you could speak to a geologist.

Page 69

GLOSSARY Sharpness Horrible in audio and an over-abused setting on TV’s. Sibilance

Where the ‘S’, ‘F’ and ‘T’ sounds are over-emphasized, assuming it doesn’t occur naturally. Freddie Mercury did have a natural lisp!

Smart phone A mobile phone which allows access to the internet, subsequently enabling the user to do many things, most of which are pointless. Some of them actually make calls! Smart TV

This does not refer to a TV that only allows you to watch the BBC, but to a TV that allows access to the internet.

Does the music sound fast enough? Correct timing is very important within music. So it is in a Hi-Fi system. Too much bass and the music will sound too slow.

SPL

Sound Pressure Level. This is the local sound pressure deviation from the ambient pressure caused by a sound wave...in other words, “How loud?”

Allegedly stood for “Tomlinson Holman Experiment”. A performance benchmark generally passed by many Home Cinema products as an assurance of quality. THX is a brand, not a sound format, contrary to popular opinion.

Timing

See Speed. It’s also something that most Unilet staff are very bad at. (Especially at 9am!)

Timbre

The correct tonal character of an instrument or voice.

Transient

See Attack.

Transmission Another type of loudspeaker Line design utilizing an internal labyrinth construction to extend the bass response.

Sound Bar A new confection based snack containing lots of sugar...not really. Its actually an ‘under TV’ one box device containing multiple speakers and surround sound processing. Interesting idea if you don’t want a dedicated surround sound system. Speed

Tweaker

A practitioner of the above.

Unilet

Est. 1969. Need we say any more?...

USB

CARBON PRO 8 For over thirty years, Stewart Tyler, founder and Chairman of ProAc has been designing and manufacturing high quality loudspeakers, initially through Celef Audio, but since 1979 under the ProAc brand name. For two decades, the now internationally renowned Response range has come to represent the pinnacle of audio excellence, whilst the more affordable Tablette and Studio models have introduced the ProAc sound to a wider audience. A consistent design philosophy was adopted from the outset; that transparency, minimal colouration, pinpoint imagery, exceptional detail and overall smoothness are vital to the creation of music as a lifelike experience. Tyler’s meticulous approach to sonic design has also been applied to the build quality of each ProAc model, where only the finest components are used and each cabinet is finished in beautiful real wood veneer. ProAc loudspeakers now grace the homes of many thousands of music and home cinema lovers worldwide and the brand has become a byword for sonic excellence. The success of the Tablette, Studio range and introduction of the incredible Carbon Pro 8 flagship model is set to broaden the company’s appeal and strengthen the ProAc brand name even further.
