We are committed to considering our environmental, financial and social responsibility in all of our activities: scientific research, academic education, societal interaction and supporting functions on our campuses in Lappeenranta and Lahti.

Our passion is to provide engineering solutions for a sustainable world. Our research and education are striving for sustainable technologies and innovations in various fields of engineering.

Olli Pyrhönen Dean, LUT School of Energy Systems

The ambition towards sustainability drives our research and educational content. Growth creates prosperity but should not be pursued at the expense of our planet.

Riina Salmimies Dean, LUT School of Engineering Science

Sustainable business and responsibility are at the heart of all our study programmes. Together with our students, we have the desire to make the world a better place for future generations through science and education.

Sami Saarenketo Dean, LUT School of Business and Management

» IN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH,

we conduct and publish high-level research which improves the state of the environment and is relevant to society and industries.

» IN ACADEMIC EDUCATION,

we provide our graduates with skills and competencies with which they will be able to contribute to sustainable solutions and practices wherever they work.

» IN SOCIETAL INTERACTION,

we base our collaboration with organisations on a strong entrepreneurship ecosystem. We require sustainable operations and transparent reporting also from our partners.

» ON OUR CAMPUSES,

we aim to create a responsible campus culture where it is safe to study and work and where the environmental load and carbon footprint are small.

Examples of our SUSTAINABILITY ACTIONS

» High-quality research on water treatment. » Food from air with a new process. » 100% of the electricity LUT purchases is renewable. » We are committed to carbon negativity by 2024. » The campus restaurant constantly monitors how much biowaste it produces and sells food out shortly before closing time to minimize line loss. » Our strategy 2030: System Earth solves vicious problems to save our planet.

» In 2021, 0% of LUT’s 181 tons of waste was landfilled.

» Our campus cities are winners of the European

Green Capital Award (Lahti) and the European

Green Leaf Award (Lappeenranta) for 2021. » We are a member of many international networks promoting sustainable development, such as the ISCN and the NSCN. » Help Earth Breathe – Plant a Tree, a tree planting event for new students.
