DESIGNER HILARY WARD URBAN KITCHENS AND JOINERY
AWARDS CATEGORY KITCHENS PLUS QLD
This large, open kitchen was a unique opportunity for a fresh start for this family of five. Previously, the kitchen was located in a different part of the house and was too small and cramped to fully use or enjoy. It was moved alongside the living area and the design needed to work cohesively with the existing style of the home. The homeowners wanted more bench space, enough seating for three children, and a colour palette and design that was striking yet practical.
The designer achieved this beautifully by capitalising on the high ceilings of the home, whilst retaining the original flooring. By including vertical timber battens that draw the eye up and complement the existing floorboards, an impressive focal point for the kitchen has been created. A new generous island bench provides enough space for entertaining and food prep, delivering a more open-plan and spacious kitchen. The warmth of the wood contrasts with the cooler tones across the base cabinetry and bar stools to give the homeowners the modern, mid-century edge they were looking to achieve.
