I

n a very crowded marketplace it can be hard to work out where to do your yoga teacher training. The International Yoga Teachers Association (IYTA) is one of your options, but why should you choose this organisation? Here are some reasons why:

1. Longest running yoga teacher training organisation in Australia The International Yoga Teachers Association is an international non-profit organisation that was founded in Australia in 1967 by Roma Blair.

2. Internationally recognised qualification and network In addition to teachers and students in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Cairns, Darwin, Melbourne, Hobart and Perth, it has international representatives and members in Austria, France, Canada, Fiji, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Oman, Switzerland, Singapore, South Africa and the United Kingdom. What some of our recent graduates are saying “I have worked as a midwife with women during pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal for 20 years. I have also been a yogini for many years completing my own yoga teacher training last year. It has been my dream to share my love of yoga and the many benefits with women in pregnancy. IYTA’s pre- and postnatal yoga teacher training is outstanding in its content, broad knowledge base, focus on safety and methods of learning. The recent four-day residential shared with other students, experienced lecturers and facilitators was a lovely way to live and learn together in a peaceful retreat centre. The variety of weekend workshops, online lectures, videos and workbooks are all thoroughly researched and well prepared for self-directed and face-to-face learning. I recommend IYTA Pre and Post Natal training to anyone who wishes to teach yoga to women during this most special time of their lives.” Jane Haverfield, PPN Graduate 2017, Post Graduate Certificate Pre & Post Natal “I am thrilled that I chose the IYTA Yoga Teacher Training Course. The depth of experience in meditation has also given us a huge advantage as teachers — most yoga courses don’t require that kind of diligence. I’ve made some lifelong friends, I feel I’m part of a large, warm, like-minded community and my whole way of living and relating to myself and others has changed for the better because of this course. I can’t recommend it highly enough.” Alana Smith, International Diploma of Yoga Teaching (460hrs)

Using motivation, self-drive and passion to create an authentic career Freedom and flexibility are essential to nutritionist and entrepreneur Hayley Richards. By creating her own career in natural health, Hayley has found an abundance of both. Before graduating from the Endeavour College of Natural Health in Adelaide, Hayley had launched her own small business — Raw Karma. “While I was studying, I became fascinated with raw food,” Hayley says. “I started to dabble in nutrient-filled, plantbased desserts before raw food became a trend. My business just grew organically.” Hayley showcased her raw treats at Endeavour’s Student Market Day; she sold them to local cafes, at the markets and via private orders. She created e-Books, which she sells online and soon her business was a full-time pursuit. “I always appreciated the flexibility to study part-time or full-time, on campus or online depending on the subject and my other commitments,” Hayley says. “The beauty of Endeavour is that it’s like a community. The lecturers know your name and you’re surrounded by an instant network of like-minded people. It’s a great base from which to find your particular passion and explore your options. In nutrition, you don’t have to just work in a clinic. One of the benefits of this career is that you can make it what you want.” As Hayley’s business grew, so did her social media community. She now has an Instagram following of almost 30,000 people. “Without social media, my business would never have been as successful,” Hayley says. “I made so many connections online,” she says. “It’s opened a lot of doors and allowed me to explore collaborations with different businesses.” Given her social media success, Hayley was approached by a health food brand to help it run its campaigns. She does this alongside preparing to launch her new plant-based grazing platters, running raw food and nutrition workshops, creating recipes and developing a deodorant that’s good enough to eat. “I love nutrition because it gives me the freedom and flexibility to take on new challenges or to change up my business model when I need to. It’s always evolving.” Follow Hayley’s wellness journey: IG: @rawkarma & @hayleyskarma W: raw-karma.com

Endeavour College of Natural Health’s nationally accredited courses Bachelor of Health Science (Acupuncture) Bachelor of Health Science (Myotherapy) Bachelor of Health Science (Naturopathy) Bachelor of Health Science (Nutritional and Dietetic Medicine) Bachelor of Complementary Medicine

Campus locations Adelaide, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.

Knowledge for life The seeds of Hayley’s future career in health and wellness were planted years before stepping foot on Endeavour College’s Adelaide campus. She already possessed a passion for nutrition and had a commitment to natural health. Hayley’s studies at Endeavour College fostered her passion and commitment, as well as gave her the knowledge to heal.

Learn through practice Each campus has an on-site teaching clinic, Wellnation Clinic, where theoretical knowledge comes to life for students. Endeavour College’s Health Science degrees include hundreds of hours of hands-on learning with real clients. This clinical experience sets Endeavour College graduates apart and gives them confidence to begin their clinical practice.

Industry expert educators Endeavour College’s academics are carefully selected for the wealth of knowledge and experience they bring to their teaching. The diverse academic team is made up of academics that educate full time as well as those who divide their time between teaching, their own clinical practice, businesses and further study.

Endless career choices Like Hayley, you can find a career in natural health that offers flexibility and freedom to design a career to fit you. Endeavour College graduates can work as clinical practitioners in their own clinic or a multimodality clinic alongside other clinicians. Many graduates are now taking their clinical practice to the client by offering mobile services as well as online, using digital technology to give access to clients at a distance. In addition to clinical practice, graduates have countless non-practitioner careers available to them. These natural health specialist careers range from content creation and education to consulting and advising. With such a variety of careers available, Endeavour College graduates have the luxury of designing their careers to fit their passions, aspirations and lifestyle. WellBeing EDUCATION, COURSE & SEMINAR GUIDE

Opening your mind to further learning Q: How does studying at Nan Tien Institute (NTI) fit in with your life? A: Studying at Nan Tien Institute works well as it fits around my life. Especially being a mother, I’ve found it’s easy to balance and fit the studies into my usual workload. The timetable at NTI needs to be scheduled well. Study for each subject is across a four-week period, so readings and assignments have to be completed in that time. I only need to be in attendance for five days for face-to-face learning, which can be intensive, but as a working mother, it’s an ideal way to balance study with the rest of my schedule. Q: Did you have any hesitations or concerns before enrolling? A: I was worried about how I would manage my studies while working and raising two children. I wanted to make sure I was there for them, but I also realised I needed to better my knowledge through study. Everyone at NTI was helpful and made it easy for me to cope with the constraints and strains of trying to balance my life.

About Nan Tien Institute

A student’s journey along the road to completing a Masters Busy professional and mother of two Lisa De Ruyter is studying for a Masters of Arts in Health and Social Wellbeing at the Nan Tien Institute (NTI). With a background in business, advertising, property CRM and marketing, Lisa had an interest in learning more about health and wellbeing as a pathway to finding calmness in her busy life. Despite initial concerns with juggling studies, work and parenthood, Lisa enrolled at NTI. In her final stages of study, Lisa has already begun applying aspects of her learning into her daily life, including becoming a more mindful person. 14 | wellbeing.com.au

Nan Tien Institute (NTI) is Australia’s first higher education provider offering enlightened and holistic studies in the areas of mindfulness, arts, health and wellbeing. NTI is a government accredited, nonprofit institute that embraces Buddhist values and incorporates contemplative pedagogy to foster an environment for holistic learning, allowing students like you to contribute to the advancement and integration of knowledge, culture and ethical understanding. NTI offers postgraduate programs in Applied Buddhist Studies, Health and Social Wellbeing, as well as customised Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programs and special interest subjects to students from across Australia and countries worldwide. By using the knowledge and skills obtained through these courses, you will be prepared to meet the challenges of a globally interdependent society and be prepared for a future role of influence. Enquire today by calling 1300 343 573.

Q: What have you enjoyed the most about your studies at NTI? A: Without a doubt, my favourite part of this journey has been the collaborative learning space at NTI. The teachers have wonderful backgrounds and workplace experience, often with mindfulness behind them. This enables students to feel entrusted in the space, so they open up their knowledge and are willing to share, and this, in turn, helps to grow everyone’s capacity to learn when they are in class. Q: What do you hope to do with the knowledge and qualifications you have gained at NTI? A: Everything that I’ve learned at NTI has opened my mind to the idea of further learning, and I have enjoyed the journey of studying again. I don’t think I’ll ever leave Nan Tien now! I love the subjects. I think each subject, because of the depth of knowledge of the lecturer and their open-mindedness, has enabled my learning capacity to grow. As far as work goes, I believe that I’m on the journey to something great. Q: Have you found NTI to be supportive? A: Absolutely. NTI has been very supportive as an institute. The other students are wonderful, all from diverse backgrounds and the campus — as well as being state-of-the-art, has been a collaborative learning space. I had already touched on mindfulness before I came to study at NTI, but by learning about the history of it, as well as learning to apply it in my everyday life, I am now able to approach every part of my life in a greater way, and that has really helped me as a person. Q: What would you say to someone considering enrolling at NTI? A: I would say enrol now and see where it leads you. It’s a unique and mindful learning space. Everyone at NTI is so supportive, and you’re bound to meet wonderful people along the way. E: study@nantien.edu.au W: nantien.edu.au/wellbeing

nteractive and experiential in nature, our Meditation Teacher Training course offers the knowledge, insight and support of three highly sought-after mindfulness experts. Along with detailed training sessions, discussion opportunities and plenty of teaching practice, trainees also receive a comprehensive course manual, which includes a session-by-session reference guide for delivery of the meditation courses when you return home. While many trainees progress through our meditation teacher training pathway by completing the Mindfulness-Based Stillness Meditation (MBSM) training, followed by Guided Imagery & Contemplation, you may choose to do either as standalone courses, or complete both in any order.

Mindfulness-Based Stillness Meditation (MBSM) four-night immersion, Monday–Friday Running three times yearly, our MindfulnessBased Stillness Meditation (MBSM) training immersion focuses on acquiring the skills to facilitate an eight-week MindfulnessBased Stillness Meditation (MBSM) course. MBSM gives more depth to the “popularised” teaching of mindfulness. In our busy, modern world, contemplative meditation can be invaluable — it enables us to think things through, overcome confusion, find clarity with decision-making as well as access insight and inner wisdom, in a practical and reliable way. Guided imagery can help to access the power of the mind more directly and effectively, for greater creativity, productivity, healing and inner peace. The effective healing modality attracting high-profile sportspeople

A

cuEnergetics received widespread attention in the media last year when founder Kevin Niv Farrow gave AcuEnergetics treatments to the captain of the NSW State of Origin team, Boyd Cordner. The modality has also captured the attention of other highprofile sportspeople including rugby league legend Wayne Pearce, who says, “I was blown away by how effective AcuEnergetics is.” This media explosion that had AcuEnergetics on the front page of two major newspapers and on the TV news in the same day created massive interest all around Australia for people wanting access to AcuEnergetics treatments for themselves. “We had people from all around Australia wanting to find a practitioner in their area,” says Farrow. “There are many people out there with problems that haven’t been fixed with the traditional treatments available — AcuEnergetics gives these people hope because we have a different way of approaching their problem.” AcuEnergetics is a modern healing modality with a unique and effective approach to treating illness in the body. Farrow, an Australian, developed AcuEnergetics more than 40 years ago. It works with the bioelectrical system in the body by encouraging the body to promote faster, natural healing in order to ease pain and improve physical and emotional health.

18 | wellbeing.com.au

AcuEnergetics Practitioners work on precise points on the body to restore this natural bioelectrical flow, usually without touching the body. The results are consistently positive and effective. “People everywhere are realising how incredible and effective this modality can be,” adds Farrow. “The modality is at a point where there is a great demand for treatments and although we’ve got practitioners around Australia and internationally, there are still not enough — this is the perfect time to get trained and qualified in this exciting modality.” There are AcuEnergetics Practitioners and Wellness Balancers in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, USA, Germany, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands and Romania. The collective group of practitioners give between 35,000 and 40,000 treatment sessions each year. Farrow says, “There really is nothing out there quite like AcuEnergetics, which is why we have people coming from all over the world to study with us here in Sydney.” AcuEnergetics combines Farrow’s own research and understanding with knowledge from ancient Chinese, Middle Eastern, Indian and Judaic texts. In addition to this integration of understandings from ancient and modern medical sources, AcuEnergetics has also uncovered a number of remarkable original discoveries about the nature of the body. The result is a modern treatment modality backed by thousands of years of wisdom. Courses start from the entry-level weekend workshop, right through to the more intensive eight-weekend Level 3 “energy medicine” and four-weekend Practitioner Training. The first couple of courses (Level 1 + 2) focus on developing the basic skills and understanding required to progress further, as well as teaching the main hand techniques used in AcuEnergetics treatments. These courses expand student’s knowledge of the electrical structures in the body and how the mind and body are connected — students also learn seven AcuEnergetics Wellness Balances to take away and practise.

The Level 3 energy medicine course is an experiential and theoretical training in bioelectrical bodywork. Students are trained to feel, understand and work with the meridians, energy centres, energetic flows and acupressure points. It’s a comprehensive training in the physiology and anatomy of the electrical body. The Practitioner Training takes everything the students have learned and puts it into practice with real life experience in treating common complaints such as back, neck and knee pain, menstrual complaints and fertility issues, among others. It takes the theory to the clinical setting and helps students prepare for the treating experience. These courses appeal to people seeking a new career, those looking to enhance an existing career in western or complementary medicine, as well as people from other fields who wish to gain an in-depth understanding of how the electrical body works. The courses are also great to do just for fun and to understand the fascinating world within the body and mind. AcuEnergetics workshops regularly run in Australia, Europe and North America. Qualifications include AcuEnergetics Wellness Balancer, AcuEnergetics Practitioner, AcuEnergetics Meditation Teacher and AcuEnergetics Teacher. and wellness cuisine. However, limiting animal proteins to poultry and seafood keeps the menu nice and lean,” says executive chef James Knight. “Our menu has been crafted to nourish guests as well as inspire them, so we limit things that tend to be consumed in excess and show them how it’s possible to use this variety of produce at home. “With plenty of colourful fruits, salads and vegetables, many straight from our organic kitchen garden, our guests experience a cleaner way of eating that is still incredibly satisfying.” By sharing meals with fellow guests without the distractions of technology and day-to-day life, mealtimes are a chance to enjoy the simplicity of food and life. Ruth’s father Thomas was a lecturer of nursing and a light worker who offered his time and service to help different people around the world. Ruth was born in England and moved to Uganda at nine months of age when her father rescued wildlife. Ruth spent five wonderful years in Africa surrounded by animals such as lion cubs, deer and monkeys that the family would rehabilitate and return to

the wild. After leaving Africa, Ruth’s family continued to move around the world while her dad offered his time and service to help many different people. As a result, Ruth has been fortunate enough to experience life in many different places including Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, Papua New Guinea, Queensland and the ACT before eventually settling in Victoria. Having always been an inspiration to her, Ruth’s father was a man who lived by example and taught Ruth a lot about being a spiritual being and reincarnation of all life. He taught her that everyone and everything is equal. No matter whether we are a fly or a human, we all have souls and come from the same source. At mealtime Ruth’s family talked about energies, what they had seen in the night or experiences they had during the day. Ruth started Talk With Your Angels many years ago after guidance from a friend about sharing her gifts with others and being able to help them on their own journey. Over the years, she has evolved from helping friends in need to offering her wisdom and advice to a larger audience that includes people from Melbourne and the Geelong region, as well as some from interstate and overseas. Outside of work, Ruth is supported by her beautiful family who consist of her husband Geoff, her two daughters Emma and Sarah, her son-in-law Adam and gorgeous grandson Thomas (named after her father). Her love of animals has continued on since her childhood and she still has a menagerie of animals at home including dogs, cats and birds. In her spare time, Ruth enjoys spending time in her beloved garden and all sorts of crafts including knitting, quilting, crocheting and embroidery. Study Shiatsu and Oriental Therapies in 2019 Discover wellbeing for self and others through shiatsu

A story of herbal medicine research

C

hinese medicine made a huge contribution to medicine in 2015 when Professor Tu Youyou, an 85-year-old traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) researcher of the Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing, China, received half of the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2015. During the Vietnam War in the 1960s the Chinese government decided to set up a research program to find a new drug for treating malaria, which was highly prevalent in Vietnam. Many scientists conducted studies but their trials failed 190 times. One day, Tu Youyou found a record of malaria treatment with a Chinese herb qing hao (Artemisia annua) in an ancient medical book dated back 1600 years in the Jin dynasty. Rather than use the traditional boiling extraction methods, the Jin dynasty TCM doctor used the raw herbal juice instead. With this low temperature extraction method, the malarial parasite had a 100 per cent killing rate. Soon after Tu Youyou’s discovery, many TCM universities undertook clinical trials and the chemical structure of the Artemisia was discovered. Through several decades of application and pharmaceutical refinement, the qing hao su (Artemisia extract drug) has been proven to become the most effective medicine for malaria surpassing Quinine, the traditional chemical drug for this disease. Soon it became the first choice of US marines for their overseas troops to combat malaria, and qing hao su (Coartem) was approved by the FDA in the United States as a formal drug on April 8, 2009. After wiping out malaria in China, the herbal drug was introduced to African countries that were still affected by malaria. Since then, millions of lives have been saved. It is for this reason Tu Youyou was awarded a Nobel Prize. It is estimated there are more than 10,000 TCM books that were published before 1900, which may hold great medical value waiting to be discovered. Studying traditional Chinese medicine is the first step of this discovery. The philosophy of TCM will benefit the learners. Enrolment in the Sydney Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine for 2019 has now opened. Open day is on November 25, 2018 from 11am–2pm. The course will commence on February 18, 2019. The Australian Shiatsu College is now taking expressions of interest for short courses and the Diploma of Shiatsu and Oriental Therapies (HLT52215), commencing February 2019. Shiatsu, which translates as “finger-pressure”, incorporates mindful touch with the framework of oriental medicine theory. Originally developed in Japan to promote health and wellbeing, shiatsu uses a variety of techniques to work along the meridians of the body with the aim of supporting a therapeutic outcome tailored to each individual. There is a vast range of conditions that respond well to shiatsu treatments. A shiatsu treatment is generally given on a futon on the floor with the client remaining fully clothed. The treatment may also incorporate supporting oriental therapies such as moxibustion, cupping, stretches and lifestyle advice. Shiatsu can be learned as an introductory short course in Zen Shiatsu, giving you skills to work on family and friends or as a professional pathway through the Diploma of Shiatsu and Oriental Therapies (HLT52215). All courses are delivered on-site at the College in Brunswick, Melbourne. Founded in Melbourne in 1985, the Australian Shiatsu College (TOID3609) has an established history in training practitioners. The College also runs a student clinic that is open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays by appointment. Australian College of Environmental Studies It is said that, “Genetics loads the gun, and the environment pulls the trigger.” Since the human genome was mapped in 2003, scientists discovered that it isn’t our genes that cause most disease; it’s the environment in which we live. And yet, this information is largely ignored in both medicine and natural therapies. Building Biology is a rapidly expanding industry that investigates and controls health hazards in the home from allergens and mould, to electromagnetic fields and chemicals in everyday products. Using the latest in modern technology, our graduates acquire the knowledge and skills to use state-ofthe-art equipment to test homes for hazards that cause asthma, allergies, eczema and chronic fatiguing illnesses. Some of our graduates have even been used as expert witnesses in court. Upon completion of the nationally accredited Advanced Diploma of Building Biology (10194NAT), you will join a rapidly growing association of elite individuals who are enhancing the lives of thousands of people and their local communities, while earning a good income with flexible hours. Feldenkrais Professional Training Program begins in Melbourne, February 2019 Anyone who loves solving puzzles will love being a Feldenkrais Practitioner. Considered more of an education process than a therapy, Feldenkrais helps people become more aware of what they are doing and what they could do differently to find ease, more comfort or more effective performance. Using the incredible neuroplasticity of the brain, you will discover ways to bring about improvement gently and easily. During your training, you will develop the sensitivity to track small changes in your own organisation so that you can help others do the same. You will learn about human movement from your own felt experience and through working with your hands on others. You will learn to lead people verbally through Awareness through Movement lessons so you can run group classes. You will also learn to use gentle touch and movement so that you can work individually with people in a hands-on context called Functional Integration. You may choose to add these skills to what you currently do, or use them to help children and adults with movement difficulties, pain or balance issues. You might use them in the context of helping people learn a performance skill, minimise the risk of injury or optimise elite performance. Maybe you’ll help people cope better with everyday life — dealing with the challenges of stress and hours of sitting. Whatever your interest, you’ll gain the skills to make a difference in yourself and others. There is a combination of face-to-face, online and homebased learning over the course of three years. 26 | wellbeing.com.au

How life coaching changes lives WORDS BY ANNE HARTLEY

It was two weeks before Christmas when I received a phone call from Rebecca who said, “I have had two warnings at work and I am about to lose my job. I need you to save my job and I have one week.” Now, as a coach I am confident about my abilities, but I must admit this request felt like a tall order. However, I love a challenge so I met with Rebecca and in one session was able to help her see what took her off track at work, and what she needed to do to save her job. Two months later, Rebecca’s employers commented on the change in her and how well she was doing. Three years later, she was still in the same job and helping her co-workers who had experienced the same problem. A lot of people misunderstand what coaching is and feel it’s another form of counselling or giving advice. It is neither. Coaches do not hand clients solutions; they ask questions and guide clients to discover their own solutions. Our role is to support clients to view the world through different filters — and this is what is life changing. Coaching is very much a learned skill. Becoming a life coach is one of the best choices I’ve ever made because, not only do I get to work with people who value my contribution, helping others keeps me on track in my own life. Health Academy Australia

Health Academy Australia offers online courses in Nutrition, Naturopathy, Health and Wellbeing, Counselling and Psychology. We have excellent tutor support and exceptional student completion rates. Many of our graduates are working in the industry and enjoying their dream careers. Our graduates are also able to register with industry bodies and get insurance. The courses have excellent pathways that give students credits towards the Bachelors of Health Sciences. We have more than 50 courses to choose from. All of our courses are fully flexible and are self-paced so you can work around your work schedule and lifestyle. Vahini Panda, CEO of Health Academy Australia, says that most students who study with Health Academy are people who live in regional areas, stay-at-home mums, people who work full time/ 28 | wellbeing.com.au

part time and those who don’t have the time to attend classes. Online study gives them an opportunity to study, start fresh or upskill themselves. “When a prospective student comes to us frustrated with their current work situation and wants a change, we work with them to determine the best suitable course for them. To see them flourish from that stage to the completion of their qualification and then establish a career for themselves gives us the most satisfaction and makes it all worthwhile,” says Panda. Panda says there are many students who come from regional WA, Qld and other Australian regional areas hundreds of kilometres away from any proper facility to study. They come from isolated communities, so completing their course and working for the community and addressing their local needs gives them a focus and sense of accomplishment.
