HUMAN RIGHTS THROUGH CINEMATOGRAPHY 15 November - 10 December 2016, Gujrat, Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta
HUMAN RIGHTS THROUGH CINEMATOGRAPHY is organized by
HUMAN RIGHTS DAY 2016
Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December. It commemorates the day on which, in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1950, the Assembly passed resolution 423 (V), inviting all States and interested organizations to observe 10 December of each year as Human Rights Day. This year, Human Rights Day calls on everyone to stand up for someone’s rights! Many of us are fearful about the way the world is heading. Disrespect for basic human rights continues to be wide-spread in all parts of the globe. Extremist movements subject people to horrific violence. Messages of intolerance and hatred prey on our fears. Humane values are under attack. We must reaffirm our common humanity. Wherever we are, we can make a real difference. In the street, in school, at work, in public transport; in the voting booth, on social media. The time for this is now. “We the peoples” can take a stand for rights. And together, we can take a stand for more humanity. It starts with each of us. Step forward and defend the rights of a refugee or migrant, a person with disabilities, an LGBT person, a woman, a child, indigenous peoples, a minority group, or anyone else at risk of discrimination or violence. 3
HUMAN RIGHTS THROUGH CINEMATOGRAPHY Building on the success of the 2015 experience, the second edition of the film festival Human Rights Through Cinematography will take place 15 November – 10 December 2016. The positive response the film festival received last year, encouraged us to increase the number of movies and of locations: twenty three movies and documentaries will be screened in Gujrat, Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and Quetta. The themes featured include migration, democracy, forced marriages, domestic violence, freedom of press, honor killings, decent work and women’s empowerment among others. The number of partners has also increased: in addition to the European Union, the Swiss Confederation and the International Film Festival of Human Rights (FIFDH), this year the Embassy of Argentina and the High Commissions of Australia and Canada have joined the organizing committee of the festival. Debates with specialists will follow the screenings while several movie directors will be available for Q&A sessions either in presence or via video link. The Human Rights Declaration in Urdu will be available at the venues of the festival to raise awareness and stimulate debates on human rights among Pakistani audiences. 4
EUROPEAN UNION AND HUMAN RIGHTS The European Union was born out of WWII, which saw large-scale severe human rights violations among Europeans. For that reason the European Union is strongly committed to fostering human rights protection in Europe and around the world. While promoting human rights worldwide, the European Union and its Member States acknowledge that problems do still exist in Europe and that they must be tackled. The films selected to celebrate the 2016 International Human Rights Day show that all around the world, people are still greatly suffering from violations of their basic rights. No country is exempt from doing its utmost to ensure that human rights are cultivated, protected and enforced at all levels and in all parts of the world. The EU supports Pakistan’s efforts for protection of the human rights with special focus on gender equality, freedom of religion and belief, rule of law, access to justice and freedom of expression.

In this feature-length documentary, Cree filmmaker Neil Diamond takes an entertaining and insightful look at the portrayal of North American Indigenous people throughout a century of cinema. Featuring hundreds of clips from old classics as well as recent releases, the film traces the evolution of the “Hollywood Indian.” Diamond guides the audience on a journey across America to some of cinema’s most iconic landscapes and conducts candid interviews with celebrities like Clint Eastwood, Robbie Robertson and Jim Jarmusch. The film is a loving look at cinema through the eyes
of the people who appeared in its very first flickering images and have survived to tell their stories in their own way.

After decades of war and an oppressive Taliban regime, four Afghan photojournalists face the realities of building a free press in a country left to stand on its own – reframing Afghanistan for the world and for them. When the Taliban ruled Afghanistan, taking a photo was a crime. After the regime fell from power in 2001, a fledgling free press emerged and a photography revolution was born. Now, as foreign troops and media withdraw, Afghanistan is left to stand on its own, and so are its journalists. Set in a modern Afghanistan bursting with color and character, FRAME BY FRAME follows four Afghan photojournalists as they navigate an emerging and dangerous media landscape – reframing
Afghanistan for the world, and for them. Through cinema vérité, intimate interviews, powerful photojournalism, and never-before-seen archival footage shot in secret during the Taliban regime, the film connects audiences with four humans in the pursuit of the truth.

sell the explosives to children working in a lapis lazuli mine. When not dreaming of the time when American troops finally withdraw from their land, another gang of children keeps tight control on the caravans smuggling the blue gemstones through the arid mountains of Pamir. In this seamless blend of fictional and documentary form, we experience a stunning cinematic journey into the beauty of war-tormented Afghanistan. Shot over seven years on evocative 16mm footage, first-time director Pieter-Jan De Pue paints a whimsical yet haunting look at the condition of Afghanistan left for the next generation. As American soldiers prepare to leave, we follow De

Pue deep into this hidden land where young boys form wild gangs to control trade routes, sell explosives from mines left over from war, and climb rusting tanks as playgrounds—making the new rules of war based on the harsh landscape left to them.

WHERE
Main Auditorium, Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi
Filmed over 211 shoot days in nine countries and five continents over four years, This Changes Everything is an epic attempt to re-imagine the vast challenge of climate change. Directed by Avi Lewis, and inspired by Naomi Klein’s international non-fiction bestseller This Changes Everything, the film presents seven powerful portraits of communities on the front lines, from Montana’s Powder River Basin to the Alberta Tar Sands, from the coast of South India to Beijing and beyond. Interwoven with these stories of struggle is Klein’s narration, connecting the carbon

in the air with the economic system that put it there. Throughout the film, Klein builds to her most controversial and exciting idea: that we can seize the existential crisis of climate change to transform our failed economic system into something radically better.
