Howard Florey Scientist and Nobel Laureate

Howard Florey graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery in 1921. At that time no one could have imagined what he would achieve. Antibiotics did not exist and a simple cut or scrape could lead to a fatal wound infection. In 1940 Florey and his team changed the course of history when they developed penicillin into an antibiotic treatment. The medical discovery won him a Nobel Prize and—more importantly—continues to save many millions of lives.

Sir Douglas Mawson Professor and Antarctic explorer

Douglas Mawson was a much-loved lecturer in mineralogy and petrology at the University for almost 50 years. His interest in Antarctica was sparked by his extensive fieldwork on Precambrian glaciations in the Flinders Ranges. So in 1907, Mawson joined Ernest Shackleton’s Nimrod expedition, seeing it as an opportunity to advance scientific research. And it was! On a harsh 2000 km trek over 122 days, Mawson discovered the South Magnetic Pole with fellow explorers Tannatt Edgeworth David and Alistair Mackay. His three later expeditions to Antarctica also yielded scientific breakthroughs in fields from glaciology to bacteriology. Today, Mawson is remembered for his significant contributions to the understanding of Antarctica, the knowledge of Australian geology, and for his commitment to wildlife protection.

Rebecca Richards Indigenous Rhodes Scholar

Rebecca Richards became the first Indigenous Rhodes Scholar in 2010, winning the prestigious scholarship to Oxford University. Rebecca is a member of the Adnyamathanha and Barngarla peoples of the Flinders Ranges. As a child travelling to the region with her father she would see the traditional rock art of her people and share in stories about her heritage. At age 14 Richards’ interest in anthropology was ignited when doing fieldwork there with her father, and the Head of Anthropology at the South Australian Museum, Dr Philip Jones. The information they gathered was invaluable and later used in the determination of Native Title. Rebecca is now a passionate leader in the Indigenous community; committed to preserving and promoting Aboriginal culture. With access to the Pitt Rivers Museum and Bodleian Library at Oxford she hopes to help repatriate objects and knowledge, sharing them with Indigenous communities in Australia.

The University of Adelaide welcomes students from all different educational backgrounds, from students who have recently and successfully completed high school to those who haven’t studied for decades. If you have the skills needed for learning, and the motivation and potential to succeed at university study, we believe you should have the opportunity, and the access, to a great education. In addition to the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) we offer many other entry pathways. These include the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT), TAFE, Vocational Education and Training (VET), Australian Defence Force and our own free, one-year University Preparatory Program (UPP) that can improve your numeracy, literacy and research skills.

Bonus points are awarded for SACE students studying a language other than English or a specialist maths subject in SACE Stage 2. Bonus points can also be added through our Fairway schemes, which aim to make university entry accessible to more students regardless of their financial situation, educational background or location. We also know it can be nervewracking waiting for a university offer to enrol in a program. Many of our programs have an Adelaide Approved entry score. If you meet or exceed this ATAR score, you will receive an offer for that program*.
