THE FUTURE
Ways our courses develop your employability
Professional accreditations
Many of our postgraduate courses are accredited or approved by professional bodies, which gives you a career advantage from day one. Just a few of the professional bodies that accredit or approve our degrees include: British Computer Society; Institution of Engineering and Technology; British Psychological Society; Association for Project Management; Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport; Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development; Nursing and Midwifery Council; Social Work England; British Association of Sport Rehabilitators and Trainers; and British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences.
Learn from industry professionals
We believe it is important for you to have the opportunity to meet and network with industry specialists, hearing about their experiences and first-hand knowledge of their sectors. At the University of Bedfordshire, many of our courses include regular industry talks and masterclasses from professionals in their fields. The speakers provide you with valuable industry knowledge and answer any questions you may have.
How does a professional accreditation help you?
Professional bodies/organisations offer different benefits. Depending on your course, an accredited qualification may offer you:
» free or reduced student memberships so you can begin to build your network
» professional qualifications in addition to your degree
» exemptions from selected units or exam papers
» the option to apply/register for full or partial chartered or professional status when you gain an accredited Master’s
» entry to trainee positions within your field.
You may find at job application stage that accreditation is required – and you may not be able to ask for accreditation retrospectively.
In-house industry experience
Many of our courses offer you the opportunity to gain industry experience alongside your studies through University-based enterprises. Students from Art & Design can gain experience at our in-house design studio, Guildford Street Press, while Law students can work with real clients on real cases at our Law Clinic or Refugee Legal Assistance Project, to name just a few.
Real-world industry experience
Our links with numerous organisations – locally, nationally and around the world – provide you with a unique opportunity to gain specialist experience and create your own global network of industry contacts. Many of our courses include career development initiatives such as consultancy projects, and some have the option of an industry placement. You can also get involved with the University’s Research & Innovation Service , which works with local businesses, helping them solve some of their most pressing challenges and enabling you to develop your employability.
Just a few of the organisations we have connections with include the BBC; Glaxo Smith Kline; Reuters; Luton Town FC and Bedford Blues RFC; Machins Solicitors; Luton, Bedford and Stoke Mandeville Hospitals; MIND; and TUI Travel.
Field and course trips
Bring your learning to life through field trips that allow you to get a flavour of what reallife professionals do every day. For example, our Law students visit courts in session. Our Media students explore studios, postproduction companies, film festivals and Outside Broadcast venues nationwide. Farther afield, we have successfully bid for grants from the Turing Scheme, which provides funded opportunities for student work experience abroad. Our international art school trip has taken past students to Amsterdam, Paris and Berlin.
GET READY FOR THE FUTURE
Be a volunteer
Volunteering is a great way to develop your interpersonal and communication skills; add to your CV; and build your confidence. We offer a range of ways for students to volunteer, from one-off events to regular and long-term commitments, with charities, community organisations and on site with the University and Students’ Union.
Activities to boost your wider experience
Represent your University
You can take on paid work for the University as a student ambassador, helping out at our open days; leading campus tours; and assisting at other University events. You can also become a representative for your Students’ Union, course or faculty and be a voice for fellow students. These roles help you develop your leadership skills; enhance your presentation abilities; and make you a more employable individual upon graduation.
Enter industry competitions and awards
We encourage you to take part in external competitions so you can show potential employers your industry knowledge. It’s also a way for you to stand out from other graduates. Many of our students have been recognised within their industry after being nominated for and winning awards from the Association for Project Management (APM); British Education; Social Worker of the Year; British Computing Society (BCS); and the Student Nursing Times.
Showcase your talents
If you’re following a creative course, you will have plenty of opportunities to show your work through exhibitions and your degree show. If you’re not following a creative course, there’s no reason you can’t grow a skill or talent in your free time.
If you have an interest in radio or presenting and producing your own shows, then why not get involved in the University’s radio station, Radio LaB, a community radio station offering a mix of music shows, news and light entertainment.
For sportive students, you can still stay involved in competitive sports and represent the University through our membership of the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues – see page 29 for more on our extracurricular sports programmes.
You should also explore the clubs and societies on offer at the University through Beds SU. For more information, see page 28.
Our Careers and Employability Service has been awarded the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services’ (AGCAS) Membership Quality Standard (2022-2025), demonstrating the level of professionalism within the team.

TAUGHT COURSES
Our extensive selection of full-time and part-time postgraduate taught courses incorporates the specialist expertise of leading academics, allowing you to build your knowledge, skills and employability with an outstanding qualification.
Qualifying criteria
To gain a Master’s degree, you need to achieve 180 credit points at Master’s level. Typically, this will be made up of eight 15-credit units and a dissertation worth 60 credits. In most subjects, intermediate qualifications are available after completion of 60 credits (a Postgraduate Certificate) and 120 credits (a Postgraduate Diploma). This can be extended to a higher-level qualification at a later date, providing the credits you obtained are still current.
Delivery and support
Most units are a blend of lectures and seminars, and are supported through materials that are available online via the University’s virtual learning environment – Bedfordshire Resources for Education Online (BREO). It is also possible to study particular units within the workplace (work-based learning).
Education and teaching courses
These courses are run at our Bedford campus and offer specialisms in a range of disciplines. Teaching students spend 80% of their time in practical school placements in addition to attending lectures, seminars and workshops.
Credit for prior achievements
Taught courses are usually facilitated through lectures, seminars, tutorials or lab-based work and tend to be assessed by course work or examinations. The structure of a taught Master’s varies from course to course so it is important to find out what your course of interest is offering. Many include some form of research project or dissertation as well as taught elements. Some offer a choice of units while others have set criteria that all students have to follow. Our Master’s courses involve independent work with support from a personal tutor.
If you have credit from a previous postgraduate qualification, whether studied at Bedfordshire or elsewhere, you may be able to use some of it towards a higher award. RPCL (Recognition of Prior Certificated Learning) is applicable if you have a recognised qualification. RPEL (Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning) is where credit is given for wider work experience. If you think you may be eligible, please refer to the academic course contact.
Benefits of a taught Master’s
» Enables you to develop necessary research skills and techniques
» Your course may offer a part-time option or block delivery with a number of entry points through the academic year, helping you fit study around your other commitments
