Your Individuality We treat you as an individual. You’re a name, not a number.

Your Future Employability is embedded in everything we do.

YOUR UNDERGRADUATE EXPERIENCE Your studies enable you to explore a subject that you are passionate about, developing an in-depth understanding in areas of particular interest to you. You will discover your own strengths and qualities that equip you to make long-term career and personal choices and ultimately, realise your goals and ambitions.

YourUndergraduate undergraduate Experience experience Your

Our diverse student body will also give you the opportunity to learn more about different cultures, beliefs and philosophies. By becoming involved in clubs and societies, you will find others who share your interests, whether they are sporting, educational or social. We take an innovative approach to the delivery of your learning and teaching, one which has been designed to help you succeed and develop your confidence as a university student from the beginning of your journey with us. You will typically study one module (or block) at a time, allowing you to focus and deep dive into concepts. You will complete your assessment at the end of each module, enabling you to gain early understanding of your progress and the development of your learning. In each module you will experience a range of teaching approaches, including lectures, group work, seminars and activities which are completed through our online learning environment, Brightspace. We will provide you with access to a rich blend of learning materials and specialist facilities and resources appropriate to your chosen course. In your first year of study, you will learn in smaller groups, guided by your course team and a wide range of experts, to build a solid foundation of academic skills and tools to help you manage your learning.

This evolves through your second year to develop your reflective skills and self-awareness preparing you to be an independent learner and researcher in your final year. Throughout your degree, you will develop employability skills with a particular focus on professional development in your final year to prepare you for life after university. Our approach to learning, assessment and feedback will give you the tools to change, evolve, succeed and change again.

BLOCK AND BLEND Many of our undergraduate programmes are delivered as ‘block and blend’, where you will typically study one module at a time (also known as a block) rather than three simultaneously if you were studying a non-block programme; and learning will be delivered through a ‘blend’ of lectures, seminars and tutorials. Our students have fed back positively that this approach enables them to better manage their time and benefit from being able to revisit learning through recordings and other online content.

HOME FROM HOME Known for its hospitable and friendly nature, Suffolk has a growing student community all making the most of what’s on offer. University is where you meet friends for life, whether it’s sharing a Sunday roast in your halls, celebrating your birthday in Cult Café, or catching a train to Old Felixstowe for a breezy coastal walk, Suffolk has something for everyone to share.

Being from London I find the location ideal as it is only an hour on the train from Stratford. Be ready for serene architecture and waterfront views, as well as lively nights out in town. JEROME WAHOME Business Management

TAKE IN THE VIEW Suffolk has some of the UK’s finest coastline, nature reserves, rivers and forests. The cycle tracks, paths and boat hire make it easy to explore the landscape that inspired famous artists Constable and Gainsborough. Paddle board on Alton Water, or visit Orwell Country Park or Rendlesham Forest for some peace and inspiration.

Destination Suffolk

FANCY A DRINK? Try the local beer with Adnams, Aspall, Calvors, Mauldons and St Peter’s, just a few of the regional breweries, great to refuel after a long walk and give you a true taste of Suffolk with many using local ingredients like Suffolk malt. Or maybe have a cocktail on the Waterfront and watch the boats go by?

Destination Suffolk

BE INDEPENDENT AND EXPLORE Throughout the county you will find many towns all with their own unique characteristics and history, packed with an eclectic mix of independent shops, eateries and local artisans, there is plenty to explore. You might want to start with The Saints, a quirky and interesting thoroughfare in Ipswich town centre, visit Ipswich Museum, stretch out on a climbing wall or challenge yourself in an escape room.

DISCOVER THE FAMOUS ‘CASTLE ON THE HILL’ One of the biggest hits of our honorary graduate Ed Sheeran, Castle on the Hill was inspired by the real-life Framlingham Castle, in the Suffolk town where Ed grew up. The song describes his love of the county and the music video features the castle along with other interesting places across Suffolk.

Choose something you love and work really hard, and you’ll be surprised at how far you get. ED SHEERAN Singer, songwriter and Honorary graduate

MATURE AND PART-TIME STUDY If you are aged 21 or over, you are classed as a mature student; a large proportion of our student population are mature students. The University and the Students’ Union run a programme of events aimed specifically at mature students. PART-TIME STUDY

Mature and part-time study

We recognise that there are many different reasons for wanting to study part-time, whether it’s to fit around your family commitments, boost your career prospects, or enable you to earn while you learn. Around a fifth of undergraduate students in the UK study part-time. It can offer a more flexible approach to learning, allowing you to complete your studies over a longer period. This is typically four and a half to nine years for an undergraduate degree, following the same structure as full-time students but taking fewer modules per year. The number of modules per year depends on how long you wish to take to complete your course. If you want to study part-time, you must apply directly to the University. All applications are judged on their individual merits.

RETURN TO LEARNING: KESHA ALLEN Click here to watch

The government offers maintenance loans to eligible students who wish to study part-time. These loans are means-tested, and the rates are pro rata (must be a minimum of 25% equivalent of a full-time course to qualify). To get a maintenance loan you must also be under the age of 60 on the first day of the first academic year of your course. Ask the Student Centre for more information.

MATURE STUDENTS A large proportion of our students are over the age of 21, so if you’re considering a return to study, you won’t be alone. We understand that the prospect of being a mature student can sometimes be daunting, so we put in place a range of support measures to help. Library and Learning Services offer additional support to students at all levels of study and provide year-round workshops, drop-ins and one-to-one appointments.

Student Finance England offer a reduced rate, means-assessed Special Support Loan for eligible students aged 60 or above commencing a full-time undergraduate first degree. Additional financial support may also be available in some cases. We operate a flexible admissions policy for mature students, giving consideration to life and work experience. STEWART DURKIN

BA (Hons) Accounting and Financial Management I believe it’s not where you go to university, but who teaches you. Accounting and financial management can be very complex but the lecturers at Suffolk who teach me are amazing. The Professors explain it clearly and simply and help is given if you just ask. They are always there to support you. I enjoy my course because it broadens my horizons on finance. Learning accounting and finance is learning the language of business; you notice how organisations, banks and financial institutions operate.

uos.ac.uk/neverstandstill

My goal is to become a chartered accountant and work for one of the big companies, but the course has also helped me learn how to manage and budget my own finances better. The location of the campus means that shops and restaurants are all just a short walk away. The Suffolk Business School within the University has a café and seating area to relax between lectures and the Students’ Union has a pool table which is brilliant as me and my friends play.

BA (Hons)

This course brings together the disciplines of accounting, finance and management. You will study a constellation of subjects including: financial accounting; cost and management accounting; financial management; audit and assurance; taxation; and corporate financial strategy. There are excellent links with employers, providing opportunities to visit accounting firms and banks, and undertake internships and/or work experience and as a Partner in Learning of two world-leading professional bodies – the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), for which graduates on the course can claim a minimum of five papers in the professional ACA exams, and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), for which graduates are awarded exemption from both the certificate and operational levels. The course is not only designed for those planning to obtain a professional qualification after graduation through further training in practice, it is also for those who want to work in the financial, banking and public sector. We welcome entrepreneurs who would like to start their own business in the future, arming them with a thorough understanding of accounting and finance. Finally, there are opportunities too for those with intellectual curiosity who want to venture into research and further studies in this area, through small-scale research projects embedded within the course content at all levels, culminating in a final research project.

HANNAH NJENGA BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing I am proud to be a student at the University of Suffolk, it feels like my second home. The specialist facilities are of a high standard and allow us to put what we have learnt into practice. Our course has a good support network and we have a WhatsApp group which we all communicate through. I’d advise anyone thinking of studying for a degree to listen to that little voice inside that says “I can do this” and believe in yourself.

LAMECK NYARIRANGWE BA (Hons) Architecture I enjoy the designing aspect of my course as we are always learning new skills. My inspiration is seeing where the profession of architecture can take you. All of our lecturers are qualified architects and we benefit from good links to industry. The facilities are great, I mostly use the workshops and architecture studios within the Arts Building. The campus is easy to navigate and in close vicinity of many utilities and businesses. It takes time to adjust to university life however at the University of Suffolk this adjustment happens quickly, there is always help around every corner and easy ways to make friends.

This forward-thinking course allows you to study architecture as a tool for ecology and people’s lives in response to climate change. It offers an interdisciplinary programme for studying building design, the history and theory of architecture, creative practices and technology embedded in design projects. With us you will learn architecture as life. By the end of this course, you will know how to design buildings, spaces, objects and urban elements of architecture that are resilient and adaptive to rapid environmental, social and economic change. Through diverse project briefs, you will address people’s needs and modes of life on a macro to micro scale by means of critical and creative practice. Our Architecture degree is one of the youngest vocational courses of architecture in the country. It is prescribed by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) as Part 1*. Successful completion of our full-time three-year undergraduate degree carries exemption from the ARB/RIBA Part 1, which is the first stage in qualifying as an architect. You will be taught by qualified architects educated to the highest level and trained in different contexts. You will have a rich student experience with diverse cultural and professional references. This course prepares you for practice based on the latest industry criteria and expectations. All skills we teach are transferable and disclosive. Upon successful completion and relevant graduate placement/training, you may work in roles such as:

• • • • •

Part 1 architectural assistants, designers and technicians Artists, visualisers and illustrators Tutors and teachers in architecture, design technology, art and design Urban designers, officers in planning and the local authorities Research and editorial assistants in the built environment sector

This course also fully prepares you for postgraduate study in Architecture, Architectural Design, Urban Design, Construction Management, Engineering, and most art and design specialisms. *Subject to periodic validation Board visits This course is actively supported by the regional RIBA Suffolk network of industry specialists and sits within the learning programme of the Suffolk Sustainability Institute.

RENISTIKA FERNANDO-PULLE BSc (Hons) Bioscience* I love how broad the Bioscience* course is; allowing us to explore different areas helps us to decide what we can progress onto in the future. My favourite module is cell biology where we look into the behaviour of cells in our body and the formation of cancers. I have been doing a micro-placement organised by Student Life and it has allowed me to practise and gain confidence in my scientific skills, especially in cell culture, putting knowledge gained on my course into practice. I love the location of the University, the walk along the Waterfront is quite peaceful with fabulous cafés! It is really convenient as the train station and town are only a short walk away. It is a great place to study, classes are small so you engage more with your lecturers and get more out of your course. *Course has been re-approved as BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences

DOMINIK GRUNHUT BA (Hons) Architecture I chose the University of Suffolk because of its impressive architecture department. The staff and students are what I enjoy most about studying here, everyone is really motivated and helpful. I am inspired around creative people, working together and expressing ourselves through our practice. Using the studio and specialist facilities, I gain knowledge and experience from them all. The campus is located around the Marina making this university unique and the size is perfect, not too big, not too small. My student accommodation is close to the University and we live right next to the harbour which is a bonus.

DANIEL BETTS

BA (Hons) Accounting and Financial Management I chose the University of Suffolk because I wanted to work full-time while I studied. The smaller classes and informal contact with lecturers are a real bonus, you get better one-to-one support and being on first name terms with everyone makes for more relaxed learning. The campus is modern and spacious and right on the Waterfront which is far nicer during down-time than being in the middle of a busy city, though it is only a short walk into the town centre. I am one of the mentors on the Suffolk Life Mentor Scheme giving new students the chance to meet someone to point them in the right direction and get the most out of their time at university, and I’ve found the Student Centre great for general queries, they quickly get things sorted.

uos.ac.uk/neverstandstill

I’m also involved with the Students’ Union (SU) as Business School Officer and Student Trustee of the SU Board. It’s so easy to get involved helping the SU to grow and thrive and gives all students a better experience. I work full-time as a civil servant and they’ve been fully supportive of my desire to get a degree. I get my timetable well in advance and resources are readily available on Brightspace if I need support outside of university. I never feel guilty approaching my lecturers for additional advice and support. They are always more than happy to give their time and it can really help in the more complicated parts of your course.

Students studying criminology at the University of Suffolk will be challenged to seek answers to fundamental questions such as: What is crime? Who are criminals? Are we all equal before the law? How do we prevent crime? Criminology is an academic discipline with strong roots in sociology, psychology, law, social policy and philosophy. It is a discipline with lively and sometimes controversial debates and it is through engagement in debates that students develop the very important graduate skill of critical thinking. You can study criminology as a single route or choose to study it as a combined degree alongside sociology (see page 129), psychology (see page 124) or law (see page 111). Criminology and sociology are an excellent combination for a joint degree and you can explore the changing social context of our lives. Sociology developed with the modern world and its key task is to analyse the changing nature of the social world. Sociology equips you with the tools you need to understand the world we live in by developing relevant analytical and research skills. Graduates can pursue roles in organisations such as local and central government, the Police, HM Prison Service and the National Probation Service, educational institutions, or paid roles with voluntary organisations. You also have access to the full range of jobs open to graduates of any discipline. This course has excellent links with local Criminal Justice partners. Both courses are available with professional placement and Study Abroad options.

Digital Film Production

FRANKIE SHAFTAIN-FENNER BA (Hons) Digital Film Production I spent hours talking to one of the lecturers on an open day. It was refreshing to be able to talk openly with staff about their subject. One of the best parts of the course is collaborating with other students, developing ideas and filming them as a group helps to bring everyone together. We have a dedicated computer suite, loaded with the latest industry-standard software, including Avid, Premiere and DaVinci Resolve. With constant access to these facilities, we can sit and edit together all day. Our course includes a Professional Practice module, which involves finding and completing work for a professional client. I’ve had some great opportunities through this, from video editing to documentary work and promotional films! The people who run the student societies are really friendly and welcoming. I’ve attended the Film Society, Games Society and the LGBTQ+ Society. Since the societies are often run by students and for students, this makes it feel more like a community, as people can pitch in their own ideas and vote on the weekly activities.

I chose the University of Suffolk because both my children had such a positive experience studying here, with lots of support and opportunities from the tutors and Learning Services. I like that the timetable allows for time to work and because it is a smaller university, you receive more attention and help from staff. The facilities are great and the Student Centre and Student Life Advisers are very friendly, giving help and guiding you in the right direction. Nothing is impossible if we truly believe we are capable.

ANDRADA MARCU BSc (Hons) Cyber Security* I really like that cyber security sits midway between computing security and human impact security and being a smaller cohort, we do multiple group activities. The lecturers are very approachable and have time to discuss and answer your questions and I enjoy the variety of things we cover. Even though the course is pretty new the lecturers are well prepared and always willing to teach us more and more about the industry. I have lived in student accommodation for one year and it’s a great place. You can create friendships and find people from your course, even from the year above, who can help you. There is always something to do and if you are feeling lonely there is always someone to have a chat with, and the security is in place 24/7 so everyone can feel safe. Being a small university gives it a family feeling and student feedback is really important to them, they are always investing in the student experience. *Course no longer available. SARAH MILES BA (Hons) Early Learning The course has fit in brilliantly alongside my work and has really improved my professional practice. I appreciate having class sizes where I know the lecturers and they know me, as well as the amazing friends and support network I have made here. I have been very impressed with the library, and the Academic Skills Advisers have been brilliant for various workshops and giving feedback. There is always somewhere to find a hot drink, very important for those early or late study sessions!

CHLOE BESFORD

BA (Hons) Early and Primary Education Studies* From seeing the campus online to visiting in-person, I knew it was my kind of style – modern and ready for the future. At the University of Suffolk there is definitely a desire to have the student voice heard.

I am currently the President of the women’s football team and I love it. I have met many new friends and getting to know each other more on the socials has made the team even better.

I love studying how children learn, their different needs and how I can best support them. The course sets me up well for teacher training so this inspires me to work towards my dream job. I currently work as a teaching assistant within a school which works perfectly with my degree, the school have also been amazing at supporting me with my studies.

I live in student accommodation and enjoy the freedom you gain from living away from home. As well as living with your friends you can control your own timetable and study in a way that works best for you. *Course no longer available. New course: BA (Hons) Childhood: Primary Education with QTS

LAURA MITCHELL BA (Hons) English: Literature and Creative Writing I enjoy studying a subject that I am so passionate about. Anything and everything can inspire me, however a lot about living here helps with that. The location of the campus is ideal, the buildings are close together, plus it is only a short walk to the town centre and various student accommodations. The facilities are great, there are tons of books in the library and whenever I’ve needed a book that they don’t currently have, the staff have been happy to get a copy ordered… extremely helpful when you’re on a student budget. If you want to be at a uni that really does make you feel seen, then this is a really great place to be.

WILL KING BA (Hons) Architecture I picked the University of Suffolk because I liked the size of the campus and its surroundings. The lecturers know us by name, they are enthusiastic and encouraging which means we learn a lot in a short period of time. There is a real sense of community on the course between students on different years of study too. It’s great that all the facilities for the course, including the workshops, are all in the same building as our studios. There is a lot going on at the University and many different places to study or meet friends.

BARBARA MIRANDA

BA (Hons) Event and Tourism Management I have been inspired by my lecturers who are very supportive, knowledgeable in their field and make learning so interesting. I feel that I take more in because of the teaching methods that they use. During my first year I was a course rep and every query I put through was attended to and taken into consideration, and lecturers adapted their lectures if needed.

The campus is very modern yet comfortable. I enjoy the relaxing and refreshing atmosphere of the Waterfront at night. I was initially anxious about starting university as a mature student but everyone has been really welcoming, my confidence has increased massively since being here.

I enjoy how many trips we go on for our course and the visitors we have in lectures. I am a very active learner so being able to go out and meet people as well as see new things has definitely helped me with my studies.

ALEX GOOCH Students’ Union President

BA (Hons) Special Educational Needs and Disability Studies* The look of the course at the University of Suffolk really caught my attention when I was researching where to study. I am really committed to working in a field that helps make society better and more inclusive for everyone and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Studies course was just right for me, I also liked that the University is young and growing with a strong community ethos. The intake on the course felt very personal to the individuals that studied on it, all the lecturers really got to know us and it felt like a supportive community. I particularly enjoyed the third year modules where we could be more independent with our research and the topics for our essays. It is my local university and the location on the Waterfront is lovely. I made an effort to get involved in social sports and become a Course Rep for the Students’ Union (SU) in Council meetings which was rewarding and good for my confidence, especially when I went on to win an election to become the President of Education at the SU. Being part of the student community and making friends was the best experience. I would urge everyone to get your money's worth by getting involved with as much as you can. I met friends for life and it helped me to stay engaged and interested in my studies. All round, it was a brilliant and empowering experience. * Course is no longer available, but students can select BA (Hons) Childhood with the appropriate pathway

The study of history is a dynamic and ever-changing pursuit, shaped as much by the questions of the present as the events of the past. We seek to understand the events and forces that have shaped the world of today. Our degree focuses on British, European and global history from 1500 to the present. It examines historical experience at all levels, local, national and global. We explore the experiences of individuals, peoples, places, nations and empires and examine the ideas and events which shaped their place in history. We seek to understand not only what happened in the past, but why and how it happened. We support our undergraduates to think of themselves as historians and become active researchers from an early stage. Following the recent opening on our campus of a new purposebuilt archive and learning centre, The Hold, students at the University of Suffolk have unrivalled access to historical primary sources on their doorstep and additional opportunities to work alongside professional archivists and other specialists. Graduate employment is at the heart of our degree. Employability skills are embedded into our programme to ensure that you leave us with an attractive and potent CV. so far! I have recently finished my first placement in hospital, applying theory, such as anatomy and physiology to practise has been a great experience. The location is the best, I enjoy my walks to university every day! It is fun to have different places to go for studies, lectures and clinical skills. The Waterfront Building always feels welcoming and I love venturing over to the James Heir Building for clinical skills. It’s allowed me to become more confident and prepare for going into practice, and the library over the road is perfect to sit and study with my friends. This is a great place, you just reach out and the support’s there, so many good people bring this community together!

They work in partnership with service users and their carers, promoting core NHS values to help them achieve self-care, independence and recovery. You will spend 50% of your time on placement and 50% of your time in the classrooms or simulation laboratories. You will learn to work in a variety of mental health settings, particularly developing your therapeutic communication and interpersonal skills. You will also learn about physical nursing care alongside students from other fields of nursing and will be encouraged to develop the skills of independent learning, critical analysis, leadership, management and decision-making. BSc (Hons)

This course prepares students to practice midwifery in all settings, including a woman’s home, community setting or hospital environment, and with your degree you will be eligible for professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. This course will enable you to acquire appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes to deliver safe and high-quality midwifery care for all women and their partners. It will also equip you to develop interpersonal and negotiation skills that can be utilised within a range of multidisciplinary settings to improve choice, access and continuity of care for childbearing women and their families. This is supported by recent research into women’s experiences of maternity care, which identified good communication, support, involving women in their care and being treated with respect, dignity and kindness, as factors which contributed to a positive experience. Midwifery is an evolving profession, so a key part of this course is about developing the skills to adapt to new situations and to become a resilient practitioner to meet the needs of women, babies and families. The skills and underpinning knowledge are explored and practised both on campus in the clinical skills laboratory and in practice placements, working alongside midwifery and other health and social care professionals. Modules studied include anatomy and physiology relating to childbearing; sociological and psychological aspects of childbearing; critiquing research and how it informs evidencebased practice; and the role of the midwife. In practice, you will gain valuable experience working with midwives, learning from them as you develop skills and confidence. There is a strong support network, learning from peers in small groups and the midwifery teaching team, who specialise in hypnobirthing, normal birth, high-risk care and public health. Working with the latest and best evidence, students will have the opportunity to learn and practice using the Continuity of Care model, central to contemporary developments in maternity care. Students also study the Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) module as part of the course.

In 2019, I was elected as the BAME Officer for the SU, although this a part-time role alongside my studies, I am really committed and work closely with them to provide support, advice and guidance for students and staff. I have also started the BAME Society and I encourage students to register and get involved or just ask me a question SU.BAMEOfficer@uos.ac.uk or Twitter @BameOfficer. There’s loads of support available and Student Centre is a great starting point for useful information. I encourage everyone to tap into these resources, you will find amazing staff and help! You should take every opportunity and support that will help make your study at Suffolk easier. The new social area for students is the best thing ever for socialising and relaxing with “uni-mates” and the location of the campus is just right, perfect for walking into the busy town centre with loads of facilities and shops. The University is right on the Waterfront, it feels and looks amazing any time of the year. If you want a different and unique experience, I recommend the University of Suffolk.

If you want to explore the interaction between mind and behaviour, Psychology could be the course for you. It will provide you with a thorough grounding in each of the major fields of: social psychology; developmental psychology; biological psychology; cognitive psychology and a strong understanding of research methods as required for psychology programmes accredited by the British Psychological Society. More applied modules enable you to apply your knowledge to specific areas e.g. psychological aspects of health and wellbeing, cyberpsychology and fundamentals of cognitive neuroscience. You can choose to study Psychology as a single route, or as a joint degree with Criminology or Sociology. Psychology and Criminology focuses on fundamental questions about the nature of justice and crime, what makes a criminal and how effective punishment may or may not be for particular crimes. Sociology is concerned with important classical and contemporary sociological debates in areas such as globalisation, social stratification, gender and sexuality, technology and sociological theory that impacts human behaviour. The Suffolk Psychology Society at the University offers a regular series of lectures. At these lectures, world-leading experts from different fields of psychology provide insights into their most recent research and the impact it has on the current understanding of psychological functioning. There is also a Student Psychology Society at the University of Suffolk that holds regular events. Psychology has developed from its early underpinnings in philosophy, medicine and psychiatry to emerge as a dynamic and popular independent science, providing insights into the complexities of the human condition.

ELLIOT NEGRU

BSc (Hons) Psychology and Early Childhood Studies* I chose the University of Suffolk because it is relatively small and new, for me that meant state-of-the-art facilities and professors that are new and eager to teach students in smaller groups than other universities. You don’t feel like just another number or another random face in the crowd, but you actually feel like you are someone, you have a voice and the lecturer is there for you and your education.

or a problem that needed solving, I knew I could count on my friends or lecturers to give me advice and set me on the right track. For me, the University of Suffolk felt like my home away from home, helping me the way a family does. *Course no longer available, related courses include Psychology or Childhood courses

I think one of the most enjoyable aspects of being a student at the University of Suffolk is the camaraderie, the support you get and have all around you, be it friends, course mates, lecturers or Student Services. I never felt alone at university, even if I had a bad day

The University will be there to support and guide you when you decide to begin.

AIDAN DEVINE BA (Hons) Digital Film Production I enjoy working with the filming equipment, editing suites and screenwriting modules to learn different aspects of filmmaking, and the Waterfront is great for film locations or study opportunities. It feels good to be part of a team of unique, talented, and wonderful people from different backgrounds, all working on something of our own. I would advise new students to come to university with an open mind and a free spirit, enjoy your work and the people around you, reach out to them to succeed as a team, and if you’re lucky, a family.

ABIGAIL HARKNESS

BSc (Hons) Sport Performance Analysis I chose the University of Suffolk because of the specialist facilities and with smaller cohorts I knew I would get plenty of access to them. We use professional level technology on the course and being able to replicate current field work really helps build my CV. With the campus building spread along the Waterfront everything is in close proximity and it makes for a beautiful walk along the marina every day which is a bonus.

I am the current President of Netball, but I’ve also tried many other sports the SU offers such as football. Joining sports in my first year helped me to socialise and meet new friends and they have stayed with me throughout my time at the University.

We use the Sports Science Lab in the Library Building and the Human Technology Lab in the James Hehir Building and the access to this equipment has benefitted my learning, the smaller group sizes allow everyone to use the equipment themselves.

BSc (Hons) Wildlife, Ecology and Conservation Science I love the practical elements of my course, we get to see exotic animals up close with loads of hands-on experience and great support. BTEC Higher Nationals

BTEC HIGHER NATIONALS Our partner colleges offer both Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diploma (HND) courses, targeted at delivering specialist vocational learning. HNCs and HNDs are awarded by Pearson, a well-established national awarding body, and studying these with the University of Suffolk allows students to benefit from the combination of a nationally recognised curriculum, delivered by local experts in the field. Students also benefit from the close relationships that our tutors have with local employers, ensuring delivery reflects current knowledge and development, preparing students to take their place in employment.

These awards are recognised by employers for their emphasis on developing students’ practical skills, specialist knowledge, and sector and industry understanding. To view the up-to-date list of HNC/HNDs available at our partner colleges, visit: uos.ac.uk/courses

161

Learning and teaching on Higher National courses is characterised by an emphasis on ensuring theoretical content is well grounded in industrial practice, complemented by opportunities for work- based learning, and individual and group project work.

Part-time studying an HNC will take around two years, with a further year or two required to study for an HND. An HND will typically take two years full-time study to complete. Following the completion of an HND, students are often able to progress onto Honours degree courses, usually requiring one or two further years of study.

We work in partnership with employers to deliver a range of Higher and Degree Apprenticeships. Our apprenticeships are offered at Levels 4–7 and apprentices are awarded a Foundation degree (Level 5), a Bachelor degree (Level 6) or a Masters degree (Level 7) at the end of their course.

THE APPRENTICESHIP HUB Based in the Atrium, the Hub team has been set up to support apprentices and employers on their journey providing a one-stop-shop working across various professional and support services within the University.

STUDYING

ASSESSMENTS Apprentices will undertake a range of assessments as required by their degree course, including work-based projects, assignments, exams, presentations and group work to receive their University Award (e.g. Bachelor degree). To complete the full apprenticeship, apprentices will be required to undertake a final assessment known as the End Point Assessment (EPA). The EPA method will vary per apprenticeship standard and can include (but is not limited to) an interview, observation, synoptic project, test or showcase. Upon successful completion of the EPA, apprentices will receive their apprenticeship certificate of completion.

MORE INFORMATION More information about apprenticeships is available at uos.ac.uk/apprenticeships and on individual course pages. Visit uos.ac.uk/apprenticeships for details or contact apprenticeships@uos.ac.uk with queries.

163

Apprentices have a contract of employment with their employer and are required to spend at least 20% of their contracted working hours undertaking apprenticeship training (known as ‘off-the-job’ training). Teaching of theory takes place either on campus or within specialist teaching facilities agreed with the employer; using our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) or within the workplace. Apprentices will develop their practical skills within the workplace to further develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) outlined in their chosen apprenticeship standard. This is where ‘on-the-job’ training will take place.
