CHANCELLOR’S CONGRATULATIONS
Chancellor’s congratulations
It is with great pleasure that as Chancellor I congratulate you, on graduating and seeing the fruition of all your hard work. We are very proud of you. This is a moment of celebration, and gratitude. Time to remember and say thanks, to all those who supported you along the way, family, friends, colleagues and staff. You are now a graduate, and therefore linked to the University in a new way as a member of our Alumni Community, and as alumni, you are also now an ambassador. I too am an ambassador for this wonderful University. In this ceremonial role, as in all my work, I am an advocate for women’s rights and for diversity and equality of opportunity. This interest and drive comes directly from my heritage and the fights of my greatgrandmother Emmeline and grandmother Sylvia Pankhurst - leaders of the British suffragette movement. Looking back, history reminds us of how far we have come, but to make a difference in the world, we also need to focus on the present and the future. I believe that whatever path we take, whatever our work or personal circumstances, we have individual and collective responsibility to make the
world a better place, including promoting inclusion and challenging discrimination and prejudice, wherever it lurks. I also believe in the importance of finding joy and wonder in our lives – hence my motto - that we should all strive for both ‘fun and purpose’. I hope that on your own individual journeys of fun and purpose, you stay in touch and continue to champion the University of Suffolk, finding ways to support the institution and the students that follow in your footsteps. Once again, many congratulations. All the very best with your future endeavours and please keep in touch.
Dr Helen Pankhurst CBE Chancellor

VICE-CHANCELLOR’S CONGRATULATIONS I am delighted to welcome you, your family and friends to your graduation ceremony at the University of Suffolk.
Vice-Chancellor’s congratulations
Graduation is the culmination of all your hard work, and you should be extremely proud of all that you have achieved, both individually and collectively, and within the context of a global pandemic. I am extremely proud of the fact that you completed your programmes demonstrating your resilience and commitment. Today it is time to celebrate your accomplishments and we congratulate you on attaining your award. As Vice-Chancellor, I always find graduation a good time to reflect. At the University of Suffolk, we transform lives through education and research, ensuring that we make a positive impact on individuals, communities and society.
We aim to prepare you for your future working life and make an impact on the world around you. Our graduate employment rates remain excellent, demonstrating our students’ value in a competitive market. So, I urge you to be confident in the person that you have become through your studies and to take this learning and confidence into your workplace. The Ceremony
THE CEREMONY
6
Once the procession have taken their places, the ceremony is formally opened and the Conferring Officer gives an opening address. If an Honorary Degree is being awarded, a senior member of the University will take the role of orator to present the Honorary Graduand before their award is conferred followed by a response from the Honorary Graduate. Statements of authority are then made before the presentation of graduands for their awards to be conferred. Each graduand is called to the stage individually by name to be congratulated by the Conferring Officer. After all awards have been conferred and prizes presented, one of the new graduates will make a speech on behalf of the graduates.
University of Suffolk Mace Processions often feature a ceremonial mace, for example at parliamentary or formal academic occasions.
The Ceremony
The ceremony begins with the entrance of the academic procession. The procession includes members of academic staff, senior managers, recipients of Honorary Awards and the Conferring Officer from the University of Suffolk.
Traditionally, a ceremonial mace is a highly ornamented staff of metal or wood, carried by a mace-bearer before a sovereign or other high officials in civic ceremonies intended to represent the official’s authority. Within higher education, a ceremonial mace has been a symbol of university scholarship and integrity since the 11th century. Local wood turner, Darren Breeze, created our mace in 2019 using a design by Elizabeth Martin, following a county-wide competition. The design is traditional with a modern twist incorporating typical Suffolk symbols and associations in a subtle way. The design features the sun rising over the sea, the University’s iconic Question Mark and three ‘nut bolts’, created using the University’s 3D printer, symbolising Suffolk’s Trinity; the Suffolk Punch horse, the Black Faced sheep and the Red Poll cattle.
The ceremony is then formally closed and the procession lead the new graduates from the venue.

Like many women, she juggled being a mother, full-time nurse and informal carer while undertaking further study. Despite being a reluctant student, education became her ‘passport.’ Cathy has worn many hats during her career; Community Nurse, Senior Lecturer, Associate Dean and Head of Education and Training, as well as founder, chair and trustee of many charities. As a passionate fundraiser she has run marathons, climbed mountains and walked and cycled miles in support of charities and good causes. She has always loved ‘hands-on’ clinical practice and returned to direct patient care over 25 years ago to develop a unique and fulfilling role in community nursing. Given the title of Queen’s Nurse in 2018, Cathy was awarded an MBE in 2020 for services to nursing and fundraising in Suffolk.

In 2019, he became Ralph Fiennes’ Suffolk dialect coach in ‘The Dig,’ in which Fiennes received many accolades for his dialect. More recently, on BBC Countryfile, Charlie made an appearance explaining the importance of Suffolk’s dialect.

On television, his was the first voice to launch BBC Four, where he also presented the BBC Proms. From Lowestoft, Zeb is leading a campaign to erect a statue of his hometown hero Benjamin Britten on the seafront opposite the composer’s birthplace, to inspire other young people in the town that they too can achieve their ambitions. Zeb is the author of the bestselling ‘Gaspard the Fox’ series of children’s books, illustrated by James Mayhew. ‘Gaspard’s Foxtrot’ and ‘Gaspard’s Christmas’ are also major new narrated concert works, composed by Jonathan Dove.
