CHANCELLOR’S CONGRATULATIONS

It is with great pleasure that as Chancellor I congratulate you, on graduating and seeing the fruition of the work that you have put in over the years.

Because of COVID and lockdowns, compared to other cohorts of university students, you will have had the most unusual and, often the most frustrating of university experiences. Looking back on these, do remember that you learnt to overcome adversity at challenging times and adapted. Your graduation is even more special as a consequence, and you can take many of the lessons around resilience with you as you march forward.

At this time of achievement, do remember to say thank you to family, friends and staff – all those who have supported you along the way, showing appreciation is important and valued.

You are now a graduate and therefore linked to the University in a new way as a member of our Alumni Community, and as alumni, you are also now an ambassador. I too am an ambassador for this wonderful university. Other hats including being a writer, a professor and a senior adviser in international development. In all my work, I am an advocate for women’s rights and for diversity and equality of opportunity. This drive comes directly from my heritage and the fights

of my great-grandmother Emmeline and grandmother Sylvia Pankhurst – leaders of the British suffragette movement.

Looking back, history reminds us of how far we have come, but to make a difference in the world, we also need to focus on the present and the future. I believe we have individual and collective responsibility to make the world a better place, including by promoting norms that value ALL people, challenging discrimination and prejudice wherever it lurks. I also believe in the importance of finding joy and wonder in our lives – hence my motto which is that we should all strive for both ‘Fun and Purpose’.

I hope that on your own individual path, you will find ways to champion the University of Suffolk supporting the institution and the students that follow in your footsteps.

The ceremony begins with the entrance of the academic procession. The procession includes members of academic staff, senior managers, recipients of Honorary Awards and the Conferring Officer from the University of Suffolk.

Once the stage party have taken their places, the ceremony is formally opened and the Conferring Officer gives an opening address.

If an Honorary Degree is being awarded, a senior member of the University will take the role of orator to present the Honorary Graduand before their award is conferred followed by a response from the Honorary Graduate.

Statements of authority are then made before the presentation of graduands for their awards to be conferred. Each graduand is called to the stage individually by name to be congratulated by the Conferring Officer.

After all awards have been conferred and prizes presented, one of the new graduates will make a speech on behalf of the graduates.

The ceremony is then formally closed and the stage party lead the new graduates from the venue.

University of Suffolk Mace

Processions often feature a ceremonial mace, for example at parliamentary or formal academic occasions.

Traditionally, a ceremonial mace is a highly ornamented staff of metal or wood, carried by a mace-bearer before a sovereign or other high officials in civic ceremonies intended to represent the official’s authority.

Within higher education, a ceremonial mace has been a symbol of university scholarship and integrity since the 11th century. Local wood turner, Darren Breeze, created our mace in 2019 using a design by Elizabeth Martin, following a county-wide competition. The design is traditional with a modern twist incorporating typically Suffolk symbols and associations in a subtle way. The design features the sun rising over the sea, the University’s iconic Question Mark and three ‘nut bolts’, created using the University’s 3D printer, symbolising Suffolk’s Trinity; the Suffolk Punch horse, the Black Faced sheep and the Red Poll cattle.

The academic dress at today’s graduation ceremonies has evolved from the traditional clothing worn by scholars at the first universities in medieval times. Each university’s academic dress is unique with the hood shapes and colours identifying the award and awarding institution. The colours for our hoods are based on the county crest of Suffolk.

At Adastral Park, the new DigiTech Centre has opened. The result of a collaboration between the University of

Suffolk and BT, with funding from the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). The Centre provides training in cutting-edge digital skills for careers in information and communications technology. It boasts specialist hightech laboratories for Data Science and AI, Cyber Security, and Internet of Things technologies and is jointly used by staff, students and businesses based at the Park.

This year, the University opened the newly developed Health and Wellbeing Building, a space on-campus supporting the promotion of integrated care amongst our student body, practice partners and the wider community. It houses brand-new clinical simulation facilities, two state-of-the-art hospital wards, a midwifery birthing unit, a new sports and exercise facility, a

working radiography imaging suite and counselling/physiotherapy clinic rooms.

It is also home to the Integrated Care Academy (ICA); a unique alliance between the University, NHS Integrated Care System and Suffolk County Council. The ICA is an exemplar in the field of integrated care, extending local impact, regionally, nationally and internationally. As the only Integrated Care Academy in the UK, it demonstrates how Suffolk and North East Essex is one of the best places in the world for learning, developing and implementing integrated care, creating exciting opportunities for our staff, students and alumni.

Based in the lively coastal towns of Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft, the University of Suffolk at East Coast College offers a growing range of Foundation and Honours degrees, the majority of which are led by lecturers who are active in their specialist fields with established links to employers and the local community. The College boasts an internationally renowned centre of excellence in engineering, offshore and related maritime safety and logistics, and a dedicated Energy Skills Centre.

University of Suffolk at Suffolk New College

Providing a friendly and welcoming environment, the University of Suffolk at Suffolk New College is just a few minutes walk from the University campus on the Ipswich Waterfront. Located in a purpose-built £70m facility forming part of the Ipswich Innovation Quarter, students benefit from a dedicated higher education social space, teaching innovation centre and a civil engineering laboratory.

University of Suffolk at West Suffolk College

University of Suffolk at West Suffolk College is an established and excellent centre for higher education located in Bury St Edmunds. The College has its own unique identity and a strong commitment to student achievement. A wide range of career-related Foundation and Honours degrees are available at the dedicated higher education facilities.

DanceEast

The University has an established partnership with DanceEast to deliver the BA (Hons) Dance programme, the first two-year work-based dance degree in the UK, responding to growth in demand for dance artists working in health, education and community settings.

Global Banking School

Global Banking School (GBS) is a partner institution of the University of Suffolk. The University validates a range of undergraduate degree programmes delivered at GBS campuses in Birmingham, Leeds, London and Manchester, and successful students graduate with a University of Suffolk award.

Initial Teacher Training

The University works in partnership with four Initial Teacher Training (ITT) providers: BEC Teacher Training, Inspiration Teacher Training, North Essex Teacher Training, and Suffolk and Norfolk SCITT. On successful completion of the programme, trainees receive a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), awarded and conferred by the University of Suffolk, enabling them to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

London School of Commerce

The London School of Commerce (LSC) is an Associate College of the University of Suffolk. The University has validated a range of business-related undergraduate and taught postgraduate degree programmes for delivery by LSC at its campuses in London, Manchester, Malta and Sri Lanka, with successful students graduating with a University of Suffolk award.

The University works in partnership with Unitas to validate a range of Foundation and Honours degrees in Youth Justice, Crime, Criminology and Criminal Justice. These are delivered via distance learning to those working, or aspiring to work, in the youth and criminal justice systems.

Unlocked Graduates

Unlocked Graduates is a two-year graduate prison officer leadership programme. Students who complete the programme are awarded an MSc in Leadership and Custodial Environments from the University of Suffolk.

There are so many things to be proud of. You have shaped your university experience. You have attended our events, taken part in our sports and societies, used our advice service and taken advantage of the deals and discounts we have offered. You have continually shaped your Students’ Union (SU) by offering feedback on our services and telling us what we do well and what could be better.

Your votes determined SU leadership and gave you a say on how the SU is driven. You elected your Presidents and officers to take the SU forward for the next year. You have influenced a new strategy to embed student leadership at all levels to ensure future students are represented and at the heart of the decisions we make.

We hope that you enjoy every minute of celebrating your achievements with friends and family.

This can be in business, industry, commerce or enterprise; for academic distinction in, or services to, academic disciplines of particular interest to the University; for public or community service exceeding professional or job requirements; or an exceptional contribution to the University of Suffolk.

Those who receive an Honorary Award become members of the University of Suffolk Alumni Community, continuing their relationship with the University for many years after the formalities of the graduation ceremonies. We are proud of this year’s new Honoraries and welcome them into the University of Suffolk.

Each year Honorary Awards are conferred on notable individuals at the annual graduation ceremonies, with nominations sought from across the institution.

Jonathan Adnams

OBE

Educated at Framlingham College 1965-72, Jonathan left school at 16 years old to go longshore fishing from Southwold harbour, prior to studying Estate Management at Southampton College of Technology (1974).

Jonathan joined Adnams in November 1975 as an apprentice Brewery Engineer, gaining an ONC and HNC in Mechanical Design Engineering via Lowestoft and Norwich Colleges. He held positions of Distribution Manager and Director from 1980 and Jonathan joined the Adnams board in 1988 as Pubs and Property Director.

He was appointed Adnams Managing Director in 1997, a role which encompassed Brewery Production between 1998 and 2018.

He attended Ashridge Business School 2002-2006. Jonathan led the project teams responsible for the redevelopment and modernisation of the Sole Bay Brewery. He was the inspiration and driving force behind the concept and building of the Copper House Distillery in 2009 where Jonathan took Adnams into the world of distillation of Vodka, Gin and Whisky.

In 2006 Jonathan became Chairman of Adnams plc and Adnams Community Trust and remains so until the present day.

In 2008 he was awarded an OBE for Adnams commitment to Corporate Sustainable Responsibility.

Activities outside of Adnams include sailing, farming and an interest in the history of the Baltic region.

Jonathan is a frequent visitor to Lithuania and studied Lithuanian language at VDU Kaunas (Vytauto Didžiojo University).

Jonathan has a long association with the RNLI, joining the Southwold Lifeboat crew at 17 years old, he held the position of Senior Helmsman from 1980 until his retirement from an active role in 2001. During his 28 year active lifeboat career Jonathan took part in over 200 rescues, during which time 168 lives were saved by the Southwold Lifeboat.

Dr Harry Brünjes BSc MBBS DRCOG FEWI

FRCP (Edin)

Dr Harry Brünjes was born in Norwich and spent his first twenty years in Corton, a clifftop village between Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth. Early education was at St Margaret’s School, North Lowestoft and Bedford Modern School. Subsequently Harry initially graduated from London University and then qualified in medicine at Guy’s Hospital and St Thomas’s Hospital.

In 1995 Harry started the Premier Medical Group (PMG). In 2010 PMG was acquired by Capita. In 2016 Harry re-acquired PMG and rebranded as Kuro Health in 2021.

Harry was Chair of Lancing College between 2009-2019. Since 2015 Harry has been Chair of the English National Opera and Chair of the London Coliseum.

Harry has a lifelong interest in music and theatre. He played piano professionally which subsequently led on to after-dinner speaking. In recent years he has performed his own docudrama ‘Dial Medicine for Murder’ at the Edinburgh Festival followed by a nationwide tour.

Paul Killik Hon Grad 2022

Paul Killik began his investing career in 1969 at Hedderwick Borthwick as a trainee and a Partner’s Assistant, before moving to become a Personal Assistant to the Senior Partner at Killik Haley – a family firm started by a distant relative in 1903. Following a merger, Paul was made Partner at Quilter Goodison in 1977, and began running the Private Client Department in 1983. He was at the forefront of the Thatcher movement to encourage new investors into the stock market, opening the first share shops in Debenhams department stores across London and the Home Counties.

Killik & Co was founded in January 1989 from an old chemist shop in Chelsea; the first stockbroker in the UK to launch a self-invested personal pension that soon also established itself as the go-to house for PEPs. Now headquartered in Mayfair, with a middle office at Crown House in Ipswich, Killik & Co has seven high street branches across the South East. Still driven by its founding philosophy to make the benefits of investing available to all, the firm continues to innovate in the private client space, having launched its own robo-app, Silo, and established the House of Killik concept spaces in Battersea and Esher. As Senior Executive Officer, Paul is proud to remain involved in the day-to-day activity of the business, which is one of the few of its kind that remains independently owned. Running as a Limited Liability Partnership, Paul works closely with his daughter Georgie, who leads the innovation department, which is focused on delivering planning and investment services that harness both human advice and the efficiency of technology, for a superior client service. Killik & Co has been recognised as Financial Times Wealth Manager of the Year seven times.

Abby Pocock

BA (Hons) Early and Primary Education Studies

For my first assignment I achieved a mark of 47%, which is just 7% above the fail mark. Three years on and I am graduating with a first-class honours degree.

Being able to improve that drastically has taught me a lot about myself and has enabled me to identify my strengths and weaknesses as well as discovering the appropriate techniques to overcome problems and progress.

I started my course with a toddler in tow, and gave birth to my second son just a few weeks after I started my third year. They are of course my greatest achievements, but to be able to be ‘Mum’ and obtain a degree at the same time feels like a huge accomplishment and I am looking forward to starting my teacher training in September.

The last three years have certainly flown by, and I am still trying to process that it is all very real, and I have a degree. I think graduating will be the icing on the cake and a time to celebrate everything my classmates and I have achieved.

Maintaining communication with your tutors is my most sound advice. They are there for you whatever your concern, be it academic or personal, and they will support you wherever you need it. Finally, three years can seem daunting and a long time, but it is really not, so if you are considering studying – do it and don’t give up!

BA (Hons) Computer Games Design

I really appreciated the lecturers’ resources, advice, and support along the way and I have come out a better person with more refined skills that I now use in the games design industry.

Highlights for me have included winning a gameplay award at the Games Innovation Challenge, I was encouraged by the University to enter, along with being accepted into Tranzfuser with the help of my lecturers.

I also worked through the tough conditions of the pandemic during all three years but still came out of it with more skills and knowledge than ever before which now helps me run a studio remotely from my office.

I am looking forward to seeing all my peers with whom I have worked and grown with over the last three years finally getting their moment after all the hard work and obstacles we faced as a group.

Looking ahead I am now starting my own games studio and I aspire to be working full-time with a team of University of Suffolk graduates creating our own games and helping the upcoming game design and programming students get into the industry.

Collaboration with others will help you grow your strengths and support your weaknesses, everyone here wants you to succeed so ask any questions, work with all your peers and help each other along the way.

MSc Data Science and Artificial Intelligence

I am an international student from Nigeria and I moved to the UK during the pandemic at the start of my study back in March 2021.

I was working with a data management company back in my home country and I wanted to upgrade my knowledge to be more equipped with the necessary skills to thrive in an everchanging world, evidenced by the impact of the pandemic.

I searched online for a school and I was convinced the University of Suffolk would provide me with the right environment for me to succeed in my study. If I were to choose again, I would choose Suffolk.

The highlight of my time at the University would be my success in using the skills and everything I have been taught in class to find a job in a very difficult data market. I started a role as a junior data scientist at a firm in London just about 7 months into my masters programme at the University and that is thanks to everything I was taught by the lecturers.

At graduation I am looking forward to seeing the joy in everyone’s face knowing we fought our way through the course during a very difficult time.

My advice to future students is to ask for help if you are overwhelmed. Always try to relate to your classmates so you can get new ideas and apply them to your personal situation.

I have been an international student at the University of Suffolk twice now. Having previously had a wonderful experience while completing an undergraduate degree (BA Hons English), I decided to return for further studies.

Along with the learning, I have had fantastic opportunities to network and connect with students and professionals from various backgrounds and industries which has truly enriched my experience.

I am looking forward to celebrating the hard work and the commitment that has helped me to achieve a Distinction in my MBA. I also know that it could not have been possible without the loving support of my parents, and I am looking forward to dedicating it to them and celebrating with my sister who will be attending my graduation ceremony.

My advice to others is to make the most of your time at the University of Suffolk. With smaller teaching groups, everyone will know your name, you can access support on academic advice or one-to-one tutorials to gain insight and have discussions on specific areas of interest to you. The University also has a fantastic Student Life team that can advise you on a whole range of areas that you might need, and access to the careers and employability team continues after you leave which is really useful.

I will always remember Suffolk as a place of transformation and growth.

PhD Study

The University of Suffolk has recently partnered with the University of Brighton to provide opportunities to study for a PhD across a range of research areas.

At the University of Suffolk, anybody with a Bachelors (Honours) degree, graded at 1 or 2:1 is eligible to apply. If you have a research topic you’re passionate about, you could be able to research that topic for your PhD without a need to study for other postgraduate qualifications beforehand.
