WHAT YOU WILL NEED YOUR DETAILS
APPPLYING TO ADVANCED DEGREES Deans’ Scholar and some Advanced degrees at UOW normally require separate application forms. However, when you apply to an Advanced or Dean’s Scholar degree through UOW Selective Entry you don’t have to complete these separate applications with two exceptions: International Bachelor of Science (see page 17) Bachelor of Medical and Health Sciences Advanced Honours (see page 13)
Valid contact details
Double Degrees
We may need to contact you in late 2012 or early 2013. Don’t use a school email address unless you’re sure you will be able to access it after the end of school.
Sometimes double degrees are made up of degrees from two different faculties. If you can’t find the degree you’re after, check the table for the other faculty.
Your UOW Selective Entry degree selections
Providing academic results
You can choose up to three UOW degrees as part of your UOW Selective Entry application. Double degrees count as a single choice. You will be assessed for entry to each of these three degrees separately at every stage of the application, so you may receive successful outcomes for all three. See page 5 for more on outcomes. You will need to supply separate sets of certified copies for every degree you apply to. To be considered for a particular degree, you will need to meet the minimum application criteria. This will mean achieving a minimum raw exam mark in your Year 12 half-yearly exams for key HSC subjects related to the UOW degree you have selected.
Why you want to study at UOW You will have the chance to tell us why you are interested in the degrees you’ve applied for. This is your opportunity to demonstrate your passion for an area of study. You can also provide up to five points you think are relevant to your application, such as extracurricular and volunteer activities, work history or additional qualifications.
SAVING AN UNFINISHED APPLICATION You can save your application and return to finish it later. You must add at least one UOW degree choice to your application before you can save it. We will send you a confirmation email including the password and login details you will need to return to your application. Your login details will be your date of birth and HSC number as your enter them on your application.
ACADEMIC RESULTS SUMMARY The Academic Results Summary form is for UOW Selective Entry applicants whose official report cards or academic transcripts don’t include raw exam marks.
HOW TO COMPLETE YOUR FORM Complete your UOW Selective Entry online application as normal. When you submit your application, we will send you a personalised Academic Results Summary including your personal details, HSC subjects and marks as you have entered them. You can then print it out to have it verified before making certified copies (see page 3).
VERIFYING YOUR MARKS You need to have your Academic Results Summary verified by an authorised staff member at your school. They need to affix your school stamp, and sign and date the form, indicating that the marks you have included in your UOW Selective Entry application are true and accurate. You can then make certified copies of the form to bring to your UOW Selective Entry interview or event.
SCHOOL CERTIFICATE You don’t need to include your School Certificate marks on your Academic Results Summary. Simply provide certified copies of your official School Certificate transcripts when requested.
TRIAL HSC We’ve left blank spaces for you to fill in your marks when you receive them.
2 UNIVERSITY OF WOLLONGONG
HOW YOUR APPLICATION IS ASSESSED Your academic record is the main way we assess you for suitability You will need to provide certified copies of your high school exam results You need to provide academic results
HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED
Certified copies
Once you’ve met the minimum academic requirements for your degree of choice, we will assess you for UOW Selective Entry.
You will enter your marks during your online application. You will also have to submit certified copies of your original mark sheets or transcripts in person at your UOW Selective Entry interview or event. You will need one certified copy for every degree you apply to.
YOUR ACADEMIC RECORD We will look at your academic record for evidence of consistent or improving academic performance—particularly in subjects relevant to the UOW degrees you have applied to. We will ask to see:
You may not be invited to an interview or event. In this case, we will email you with instructions on how and when to submit your certified marks.
School Certificate (Year 10) results for English, Maths and Science
Certified results are a mandatory part of your application and cannot be accepted after the due date.
Year 11 final exam raw marks for all subjects
HOW TO HAVE YOUR RESULTS CERTIFIED
Year 12 half-yearly exam raw marks for all subjects. To be eligible for UOW Selective Entry, you will need to achieve set minimum scores in relevant Year 12 half-yearly exams. These academic criteria are set out in the tables starting page 8.
To get copies of your academic results certified you must take original documents along with copies to an authorised person who will ‘certify’ them by signing (or stamping and signing) the copies. They must print their name; provide their phone number and the position that allows them to certify documents.
Trial HSC marks when they are released
People authorised to certify documents for UOW Selective Entry are:
You will have the chance to tell us why you are interested in the degrees you’ve applied for. This is your opportunity to demonstrate your passion for an area of study. You can also provide up to five points you think are relevant to your application, such as extracurricular and volunteer activities, work history or additional qualifications.
IF YOUR SCHOOL DOESN’T PROVIDE RAW EXAM MARKS If your school only includes scaled results or ranks on your official report cards or transcripts, you will need to get your raw exam mark from your subject teacher. You can then enter this mark in your online application, and have it verified by an authorised staff member at your school—see page 2.
IF YOUR SUBJECT DOESN’T HAVE AN EXAM If your subject doesn’t have an exam, you can ask your teacher for an overall subject mark instead. You can use this mark in your online application and have it authorised by a school staff member as above. See page 2 for details.
Justice of the Peace (JP) Accountant or registered tax agent Manager of a bank or credit union Barrister, Solicitor or Patent Attorney Post Office Manager Police Officer Your school – copies must be stamped with the school stamp and have a signature of a staff member. It is up to your school if they wish to offer this service. Please check with them in advance.
TAFE SUBJECTS AND PATHWAYS If you are studying TAFE subjects or completing the HSC through Pathways, you can still include these results as part of your UOW Selective Entry application. The online application will explain how you should enter your marks.

Interviews and Events Some applicants may be asked to attend an interview or a selection event If invited to an interview or selection event, attendance is required at most
INTERVIEWS AND EVENTS After we have looked at applicants’ academic records, we will conduct a series of interviews and on-campus selection events from 24–28 September. These are a chance for members of the UOW faculties to meet you, discuss your application and determine if UOW Selective Entry is right for you. Each faculty will hold different events depending on what is most suitable—they may conduct one-on-one interviews, group testing or informal networking events. Specific event information will be released closer to the date. The faculties will decide to invite applicants on a case-by-case basis. Some successful applicants won’t be asked to any events.
BOOKING YOUR INTERVIEW Invitations to interviews and selection events will be emailed between Monday 3 and Friday 7 September 2012. If you are asked to an interview, the email may ask you to log back into your application to make a booking. You can do this using the login details provided in your original UOW Selective Entry confirmation email.

INTERVIEW TIPS Dress for the occasion. You should treat UOW Selective Entry interviews like a job interview. You don’t have to wear a suit or formal business attire, but smart, neat clothing is strongly recommended. Read your instructions carefully, and supply all the information requested as part of your application. If you are in doubt, email us on selective-entry@uow.edu.au Prepare and be punctual. This includes knowing what you need to bring to interview, and having it ready ahead of time. Be interested. A UOW Selective Entry interview is an excellent chance to talk with the people you’ll be learning from. Asking intelligent questions about what UOW can offer you is a good way to show your enthusiasm. Stay focussed on why you’re passionate about studying at uni. Give your questions some thought and try and make every answer demonstrate to the faculty why you would make a great UOW student. Some of the qualities they may look for are:
Passion for a subject Discipline and organisation Commitment and perseverance Curiosity, and a willingness to listen and learn Leadership and teamwork skills
OUTCOMES Outcomes will be sent 10–12 October You will be assessed for all your nominated degrees separately and may get a different outcome for each Unsuccessful outcomes have no effect on the normal application process through UAC
WHEN YOU WILL FIND OUT
TYPES OF OUTCOME
Outcomes for your UOW Selective Entry application will be sent by email from 10 – 12 October. Everyone will receive their outcomes in this period.
There are four possible outcomes to your application for UOW Selective Entry. You will be assessed for each degree you apply to individually, so an unsuccessful outcome for one degree won’t rule you out for the other two degrees—and you may even receive three successful outcomes.
Outcomes will be released all through the day and night, and the order they are sent in depends on many factors. Not all applicants to the same degree will find out at the same time. If you don’t receive your outcome straight away, don’t worry— even if your friends hear back before you do—we will contact you with your UOW Selective Entry outcome by the end of Friday 12 October. Following this email you will be sent a letter to the address provided in your application. You can expect this letter after the HSC exams start.
THE ATAR IS IMPORTANT Your ATAR is important. For UOW Selective Entry we’re not looking for a particular rank, though—we’re looking for consistent or improving performance. University will be some of the best years of your life, but it’s also a lot of work. It takes discipline and self-control to do well at UOW. If your performance in your HSC exam and resulting ATAR are significantly worse than your academic performance to date, we may review your UOW Selective Entry outcome, even if you were successful. Based on this review and the reasons for your drop in performance, we may alter or withdraw your Selective Entry place.
Ineligible This may mean: You did not meet the minimum academic requirements for your nominated degree. This is calculated separately for each degree, so an ineligible application to one degree does not exclude you from a successful outcome for the other two. Your application is incomplete and we are unable to progress your application. You were invited to but did not attend a UOW Selective Entry interview or event.
Successful You have been reserved a place in your UOW degree of choice. You still need to apply to UOW through UAC—we will send you more information on this process when you receive your UOW Selective Entry outcome.
Provisional You have earned a reserved place in a UOW degree provided you meet certain conditions. These may be a minimum mark in a relevant HSC final exam, or a special minimum ATAR that takes into account your achievements in a particular study area.
Unsuccessful You have not secured a place in a UOW degree through UOW Selective Entry. However, you can still apply through UAC as normal and receive an offer to study at UOW. Your unsuccessful UOW Selective Entry application will not affect this process.
UOW Selective entry
5
WHAT TO DO next When you know your outcome
UOW Selective Entry AND UAC If successful, you must also apply to UOW through UAC to receive a formal offer to study. If unsuccessful, your UOW Selective Entry application will have no effect on the normal UAC process.
YOUR “HIGHEST ELIGIBLE PREFERENCE” UAC processes all applications on behalf of UOW. Normally, they assess applicants (based on criteria including ATARs) to determine if a student qualifies for a place at UOW. UAC looks at your preferences in order from first to last. The first degree in your list of preferences that you meet the criteria for is called your highest eligible preference. This is the degree you will be offered. UAC only make one offer. Once UAC have determined your highest eligible preference, the assessment process stops and all the degrees further down your list are ignored.
UOW Selective Entry AND YOUR UAC PREFERENCES The only difference UOW Selective Entry makes to UAC application process is in the assessment of ATARs.
SUCCESSFUL OUTCOMES If you receive a successful UOW Selective Entry outcome, you will automatically be considered to have met the ATAR requirement of the UOW degree you applied to. In all other respects, you must apply to study this degree at UOW through UAC as normal. To receive a formal offer to study this degree, it needs to be your highest eligible preference.
PROVISIONAL OUTCOMES If you meet the conditions set out in your provisional outcome, it will be treated as a successful outcome as above. If you do not meet the conditions, it will be treated as unsuccessful (and have no effect on your UAC preferences—see below).
UNSUCCESSUL OUTCOMES If you receive an unsuccessful outcome through UOW Selective Entry you will not be disadvantaged, nor will it affect the normal UAC assessment process in any way. You can still apply to UOW through UAC and have your ATAR assessed as normal.
6 UNIVERSITY OF WOLLONGONG
BEFORE you Apply Understanding minimum academic criteria
UNDERSTANDING THESE CRITERIA
TAFE subjects
All UOW degrees offered through Selective Entry are outlined in this section, organised by faculty. Next to each degree is a list of HSC subjects and a score expressed as a percentage.
If you are doing a TAFE subject as part of your HSC please ensure you provide the percentage mark in your application. If your TAFE subject issues a Pass or Fail grade please enter the results as follows:
In most cases, the minimum criteria are the Year 12 half-yearly exam raw marks you will need to achieve to be considered for UOW Selective Entry, expressed as a percentage. There are a few exceptions: Completing: this means you must be currently enrolled in the subject listed. You must still enter an exam mark, but there is no minimum score. Advantage: you don’t have to study this subject to be considered for Selective Entry. If you haven’t studied it, you may wish to demonstrate a willingness to study the subject through bridging programs in your Selective Entry application. To be considered for a degree, you must meet all the criteria exactly as printed here. Only the listed HSC subjects will be considered: no substitutions can be accepted.
MINIMUM CRITERIA AND HOW YOU ARE ASSESSED Meeting these criteria means you progress to the next stage and will be considered for Selective Entry—but it’s your total performance in relevant subjects that will get you a successful outcome. This is especially true for double degrees, where the minimum criteria may not include HSC subjects in all areas relevant to the UOW course.
TAFE Pass: Record a mark of ‘51’ as the results and indicate this is an overall subject mark. TAFE Fail: Record a mark of ‘0’ as the result and indicate this is an overall subject mark.
Pathways If you are doing Pathways and have completed some HSC subjects during 2011 or before, please enter the results as follows: In the end of Year 11 results section enter your Trial HSC raw exam mark for any HSC subjects completed in 2011. In the Mid-Year 12 results section enter your final HSC exam mark for any HSC subject completed in 2011. You will be able to provide your reports and final HSC documentation for these subjects when submitting proof of results and completion of subjects.
IMPORTANT NOTE These minimum criteria are for Selective Entry only. If you do not meet the minimum criteria, you can still apply to UOW through the Universities Admission Centre (UAC) as normal.
