FUNDING THE BRIGHTEST IDEAS TO SOLVE GLOBAL CHALLENGES

UOW’s Global Challenges Program aims to bring together multi-disciplinary teams of researchers interested in solving the world’s biggest problems. The Program focuses on three Global Challenges, united by our goal to Transform Lives and Regions: • Living Well, Longer • Manufacturing Innovation • Sustaining Coastal and Marine Zones

JOIN THE BEST & BRIGHTEST Do you want to use your research to make a difference in the world? Are you passionate about the challenges facing our globe? Are you a PhD candidate keen to look at a problem from a unique angle? The Global Challenges PhD Scholars Top-Up Program awards scholarships to students who undertake research projects at UOW that address one of the Global Challenges. Successful candidates receive a $10,000 p.a. taxfree top-up. In addition, $5000 p.a. will be made available via their primary supervisor to support the student’s research and travel costs. The Global Challenges Program will award up to six top-up scholarships to students commencing in 2016. Applications close 17 October 2015. THE CHALLENGES LIVING WELL, LONGER It is one of life’s few truths: we will all get old eventually. And we are all living longer, but are we living well? Living Well, Longer examines how society can deal with our ageing population and its associated impacts and issues. While the challenge has a strong focus on two key issues—mental health and dementia—Living Well, Longer also cuts across almost every aspect of a person’s life: physical health, finance, the environment, technology, transport, early childhood, education,

RACHAEL BARTLETT

Global Challenges PhD Scholar Studying the role of an inflammatory receptor in motor neurone disease The PhD Scholars Program has been a highly beneficial and fantastic opportunity. I would encourage all PhD candidates to apply. In my case, I found that even the process of applying started me thinking about my research in a broader context, about how it would fit into the challenge of Living Well, Longer and about ways of communicating the outcomes of my research.

geography. It is a challenge affecting not just Australia, but nations around the world. Global Challenges wants to work with researchers from a range of disciplines to help examine the ways in which a long life can also mean a happy, healthy, and productive life.

MANUFACTURING INNOVATION What things should we be making in Australia and how should we be making them? This question is at the heart of the Manufacturing Innovation challenge. Manufacturing Innovation aims to reposition the Illawarra as a place of intense creativity and experimentation by drawing on expertise from a variety of backgrounds, such as engineering, design, social sciences and economics. Global Challenges is searching for creative researchers who are fascinated by new technologies, researchers who love to know how things are made and recognise how new ways of manufacturing can change the world.

ABHIJITH ANAND

Global Challenges PhD Scholar Studying how business analytics can create value in organisations The best part of the Global Challenges PhD Scholars Program is that it provides a common platform for researchers from different fields and expertise to have their say on the identified themes of research. I will be spending a year in McGill University in Montreal, Canada, working on my research. It would not have been possible without the top-up from the Global Challenges scholarship.

SUSTAINING COASTAL AND MARINE ZONES Half of the world’s population, including 66 per cent of Australians, live on the coast. In Australia and around the world, coastlines and maritime spaces are essential to the environmental, economic and cultural health and identity of a nation. From food security to climate change, marine conservation to the law of the sea, this challenge brings together experts from science, biology, law, geography, medicine, nutrition and economics. Global Challenges wants researchers who are passionate about protecting and sustaining our precious oceans to help address this urgent and exciting challenge.

THOMAS DOYLE

Global Challenges PhD Scholar Studying coastal vulnerability and the role of beach-dune interactions The Global Challenges PhD Scholars Program has not only given me the funding and support to be able to conduct a much wider study, but it has also given me the opportunity to speak to experts across all different disciplines relating to the coast, enhancing the originality of my research.

HOW TO APPLY Applicants must submit a CV including academic transcript and one-page summary of their research background in addition to a one-page statement addressing how their proposed research project aligns with the Global Challenges Program. To be eligible, your project must align with the aims of the Global Challenge Program. As a condition of award, all applicants will need to hold a competitive scholarship and satisfy the ongoing conditions of that award and their enrolment at UOW

Applications close on 17 October 2015.
