Many of these will be performed for community and society members in attendance at the WJHHS free program at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, August 28 in the Community Rooms of the Jefferson Hills Borough Building. His parents Dominic and Riley, still must fulfill their financial obligations (mortgage, car payments, insurance, mounting medical bills, etc.), and their return to work is inevitable. MVRCC ‘Pop-Up Post’ Lets Area Businesses Spread Their Wings

The Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce’s "POP UP POST" is now up and running! Thanks to Belle Vernon native Mary Blatnik for coming up with the new name for the chamber's concession/pop-up building.

This building was formerly an ATM building for PNC Bank and was gifted to the chamber for $1 in 1989. Since then the chamber has loaned it out to nonprofit organizations for fundraisers during parades and events throughout the years. Recently the chamber had decided it needed some updates and maintenance. In doing so a new idea was born. An idea to help entrepreneurs, someone who may be an online business and may want a space for the day or week to sell their goods, give the brick-and-mortar route a shot or even a current brick-and-mortar that wants to change things up and spread the word of their business to another town in a scaled-down version of their store. Of course, non-profits or organizations looking for a pop-up fundraising space can still take advantage as well. For details and to reserve a time. Contact the Mon Valley Regional Chamber at 724-483-3507.

The chamber hopes to shine a spotlight on small towns, help newly developing businesses get a kickstart, and give small businesses a creative outlet!! All proceeds from the rental of this venue will go toward MVRCC Scholarship Fund for local students!!

Advancing breast care and women’s health in the South Hills

How one

mammogram saved Amy Gliozzi’s life.

Some dates are impossible to forget. For Amy Gliozzi, one of the dates is December 14, 2023 — the day of her annual mammogram. With no symptoms and no family history of breast cancer, Amy had little reason to be concerned about a routine screening. A gut feeling, however, told her otherwise.

“I immediately knew something was wrong,” Amy said. She was right. Five days after undergoing additional testing, including an ultrasound and biopsy, Amy received a diagnosis of stage 1 cancer.

Even in the face of her diagnosis, Amy had hope. “I had a lot of confidence in my surgeon [Mark P. Gannon, MD, AHN Jefferson Hospital]. He’s been doing breast surgery [at AHN Jefferson Hospital] for over 30 years, and I trust him with my life,” Amy said.

Amy began her radiation treatment in May of this year. This was after undergoing a lumpectomy in January 2023 followed by chemotherapy. She’ll require 19 rounds of radiation in total.

It’s been a long road, but the end is in sight.

“I remind myself to keep the long-term goal of a better outcome in mind. It hasn’t been an easy journey, but I have a lot of support from my family and friends,” Amy said. “I’m also inspired by other breast cancer survivors. If they can do it, I can do it! And of course, all the staff at AHN Jefferson is wonderful. I can’t say enough about them.”

Amy’s advice to the community is simple: Don’t skip your annual mammogram. “The Breast Center at AHN Jefferson Hospital was just completely renovated with all state-of-the-art equipment. Whatever the result of your mammogram, the staff will be by your side,” Amy said.

WHEN BREAST CANCER IS DETECTED EARLY AND HAS NOT SPREAD, THE 5-YEAR SURVIVAL RATE IS 99%.

Source: National Breast Cancer Foundation

— Amy Gliozzi
“Breast cancer can happen to anyone, young or old. I went for my annual mammogram every year, no matter what. And my mammogram at AHN Jefferson Hospital saved my life.”

Welcome to the newly expanded breast center.

As a breast radiologist and Director of Breast Imaging, Sarah Thomas, DO, is excited to get the word out about how the renovated breast center is better serving the South Hills.

What does the expansion project mean for patients and the community? We now have the ability to support a higher volume of patients. With three mammogram rooms and two ultrasound rooms, we can get more patients in sooner and provide them with results faster. We’re alleviating the anxiety of waiting and reducing the time between screening and diagnosis.

What are some of the latest screening and diagnostic technologies used in breast care? We perform 3D mammograms in addition to guided biopsies and MRI evaluations for high-risk patients. We also calculate a patient’s Tyrer-Cuzick score, which assesses the 10-year and lifetime risk of developing breast cancer for all screening mammograms.

Specialized care for women, close to home.

Our compassionate health care providers focus on meeting all aspects of a woman’s health needs throughout all stages of her life.

“We provide a community environment that offers the same level of women’s health services as a larger city hospital,” said Chong Park, MD, President of AHN Jefferson Hospital. “We’re dedicated to delivering care to our people. They’re not just patients.” Between AHN Jefferson Hospital and the new Bethel Park satellite location, the range of women’s health services provided is truly comprehensive. They span from routine OB-GYN care to breast imaging, radiology, on-site diagnostic testing, behavioral health and even treatment for sleep disorders.

“By improving these facilities and using the latest technologies, therapies, and treatments, we’re able to better serve our community by doubling our patient volume, decreasing wait times, and delivering faster turnaround times for results,” said Dr. Park.

I don’t have a family history of breast cancer. Should I still get an annual mammogram? Yes, it’s still important to get screened! The goal of screening mammograms is to catch cancers when they’re small and haven’t spread, which makes treatment less complicated.

How do I schedule an appointment for a mammogram at AHN Jefferson Hospital? You can schedule your mammogram through MyChart* or call us at (412) 469-5234, Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

(Family Features) If you’re among those looking for ways to clean your home while also going green, it may be easier than you think. Consider these easy and affordable solutions to help you live more environmentally friendly. You may be surprised to find you already have many of these household products on hand. Baking soda: A natural, safe, effective and gentle solution, baking soda can serve multiple home cleaning needs. Make a paste of three parts baking soda to one part water. Rub onto silver with a clean cloth or

sponge. Rinse thoroughly and dry for shining serving or decor pieces. Additionally, you can sprinkle baking soda on upholstery and carpet to get rid of odors.

Vinegar: With the acidity to help get rid of dirt and grime around the home, vinegar can be used to clean cloudy glassware. Simply soak paper towels or a cloth in full-strength white distilled vinegar and wrap around both the inside and outside of the glass. Let sit before rinsing clean. To remove lime deposits on your tea kettle, add 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar to the water and let it sit overnight. In the morning, boil the vinegar for a few minutes then rinse with water.

Lemons: With a fresh, natural smell, lemons have the acidity to remove soap scum, clean and shine brass and remove hard water deposits. Just spray some lemon juice on tile surfaces to remove soap scum or hard water deposits. Squeeze lemon juice on a cloth and use to polish brass around the home.

Houseplants: Plants serve as natural air purifiers. African violets and ferns are beautiful ways to help clear the air.

Other easy, green ideas for keeping your home clean include opening windows and doors while you clean to improve air quality and taking off your shoes when you come inside, which can help avoid tracking dust, dirt, pollen and more throughout the house.

Cutting Summer Cooling Costs

Here’s hot news on saving cold cash: Window film may cut your home’s cooling costs.

(NAPSI)—When monthly utility bills arrive, many Americans are getting hot under the collar.

In fact according to the National Energy Directors Association, this summer’s residential cooling costs are projected to be the highest in a decade hitting an average of $719 or about $173 a month.

To add salt to the wound of higher summer cooling costs, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Summer Assessment says the predicted warmer-than-average summer weather pattern for 2024 may challenge areas of the country. The Chairman of FERC recently stated, in part, “Our country is facing an unprecedented surge in demand for affordable electricity, while con-

fronting extreme weather threats to the reliability of our grid.”

To combat the demand for more air conditioning and the resulting utility costs, the nonprofit International Window Film Association (IWFA) recommends the professional installation of heat-blocking window films to reduce interior temperatures by deflecting solar heat gain by as much as 80 percent.

“Professionally installed, state-ofthe-art window films may help consumers reduce their electric bills and improve window performance by rejecting a significant amount of interior temperature increases from sunlight during the cooling season,” said Darrell Smith, executive director of the IWFA, the world’s definitive source for window film information.

With window film applied to the glass, a home’s interior temperature may be made more comfortable and balanced throughout the home without the need to shut out natural daylight.

When compared to the price of window replacements, long-lasting window films are very cost-effective and most installations can be completed in a day or less with little, if any, disruption to household routines.

It is also recommended consumers check with their professional installer to determine if the window film selected for installation qualifies for tax rebate incentives under the The Inflation Reduction Act.

WJHSD Retirees Lauded; New Staff Hired at June Board Meeting

Recent retirees with a combined 173 years in the district were recognized by the West Jefferson Hills School District Board during a recent monthly meeting. The Board also approved the hiring of eight new teachers and staff for the 2024-25 school year.

The Board also approved the final 2024-25 budget of $68,040,881, which included a 2% increase in millage rates for the upcoming year. The 2% increase will result in a $67.65 tax increase for the upcoming year for anyone living in a home at the median assessed value of a homestead property ($145,800) in the district ($46.40 for every $100,000 in home assessment).

Retirees With 173 Combined Years Honored

Eight WJHSD staff members with a combined 173 years in the district were recognized by the Board, including: Dena Davis (33 years, librarian; Pleasant Hills Middle School), Katherine Hannon (28 years, science; Thomas Jefferson HS), Susan Gaitaniella (28 years, Jefferson Hills Intermediate School) and Wendy Matta (22 years, science; TJ).

Also among the retirees are: Linda Gaito (26 years), the district’s Payroll Specialist, Cindy Coughenour (15 years), who served as Administrative Assistant, Facilities and Business Operations and Patrick Fiorill, a district librarian for 18 years.

New Teachers/Staff Hired for 2024-25

Eight new teachers and staff were approved by the Board to be hired for the 2024-25 school year:

• Katherine Bonatesta, Grade 7 ELA, Pleasant Hills Middle School;

• Alexandra Downer, Life Skills, Gill Hall Elementary School;

• Shannon Feagins, Grade 7 Math, Pleasant Hills Middle School;

• Ashley Flynn, Math, Thomas Jefferson High School;

• Kylie Hartbauer, Grade 1, Gill Hall Elementary;

• Molly Resnik, Life Skills, Jefferson Hills Intermediate School;

• Michael Shoats, Science, Thomas Jefferson High School;

•Patrick Harrigan, Administrative Services/Communications Coordinator

The Board also recognized Elise Dopudja, Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent, and Jeff Nelson, the District’s Public Relations Coordinator. They recently received an Award of Merit from PenSPRA in the Publications category as part of the statewide 2023 PenSPRA Communications Contest. Nelson also received an additional PenSPRA Award of Merit for 2023.

WJH School Board Appoints Member, Hires Director of Facilities

During a special meeting on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, the Board of Directors of the West Jefferson Hills School District appointed Ashley Malley to the board, serving for a term until December 2025. The appointment comes following the resignation of board member Chelsea Campolongo who recently moved out of the district.

Malley, a 2004 TJ alumna, works as a talent acquisition manager for Aspen Dental and is married with two children, ages four and two. Malley is a lifelong resident of Pleasant Hills. Malley told the board that she applied to ensure that her children and all students in the district have the same positive education experience that she did in the West Jefferson Hills School District.

The district advertised for community members interested in serving on the board of directors to submit a letter of application and resume for consideration. In the letter, applicants were asked to detail

the skills and experience they would bring to the board, the reasons for wanting to join the board, two key issues that the individual would want to address as a board member, and any volunteer service in the school district or community. Eligible applicants had to be 18 years or older, possess good moral character, and must have resided in the West Jefferson Hills School District for at least one year prior to the appointment. School board members are volunteers and are not paid for their service. Malley will be sworn in at a school board meeting in August.

Also at its July 23 meeting, the board of directors hired Mark Mariani as the district’s director of facilities. Mariani most recently worked as an assistant director of operations with the City of Pittsburgh. He graduated from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania with a degree in public administration.

NEUROPATHY TREATMENT

South Hills Peripheral Neuropathy Sufferers Now Have Hope

Tri State Neuropathy Centers, one of the largest neuropathy treatment practices in the USA is currently scheduling patients at their Castle Shannon office, located at 3757 Library Road.

Dr. Michael Renk, Tri State Neuropathy Centers

Over 30 million Americans suffer from neuropathy and its debilitating symptoms of painful cramping, burning and tingling, difficulty walking, numbness, and even interruption of sleep. Neuropathy has a devasting effect on normal activities that most people take for granted and enjoy. Some of the most common causes of neuropathy are related to diabetes, medications, chemotherapy, and back issues.

“Peripheral neuropathy is a chronic and progressive disease,” said Dr. Michael Renk of Tri State Neuropathy Centers. “Left untreated, peripheral neuropathy will only get worse. It is best to treat it early.”

Since 2013, the eight regional Tri State Neuropathy Centers have steadily grown and successfully treated over 12,000 patients with an advanced technology protocol that addresses the causes of neuropathy rather than the symptoms. The program is noninvasive, painless, drug-free, and is FDA-approved.

GLAUCOMA-CATARACTS

Q: I have blurry vision, and my eyes get tired easily.

What could be causing this?

A: Although there are several possible causes for these symptoms, one of the most common explanations is astigmatism. Astigmatism affects approximately 40% of adults worldwide1. The good news is that most cases of astigmatism are easily treatable. Treatment can improve vision quality, leading to a more enjoyable and productive life.

Q: What is astigmatism?

A: Astigmatism occurs when the cornea or lens of the eye is more curved than it should be. The cornea is normally shaped like a sphere, but with astigmatism, it is shaped like a football. Similarly, the lens normally has an ellipsoid shape like an olive, but with astigmatism, it may have a more conical shape. Astigmatism causes rays of light to focus at multiple points instead of one, leading to blurred vision, distorted vision, eyestrain, and headaches.

membrane dystrophy may also cause irregular astigmatism. In this disease, the superficial layer of the cornea is folded in on itself, preventing the surface of the cornea from being smooth and uniform. This can be corrected by a superficial keratectomy, which means gently scraping the cornea and letting the superficial layer grow back more uniformly. Lastly, degenerative corneal diseases such as keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, and keratoglobus can cause irregular astigmatism. Patients with these conditions may need rigid gas permeable or scleral contact lenses to smooth out and flatten the irregularities, corneal cross-linking to strengthen the cornea, or occasionally, a full thickness corneal transplant if the astigmatism is severe. Luckily, most types of astigmatism are correctable. An examination by an ophthalmologist will be able to tell you if you have astigmatism and what treatment options are available to you. As a corneal and cataract sub-specialist, I can offer a variety of surgical treatments beyond glasses or contacts, including LASIK, PRK, toric intraocular lenses, superficial keratectomy, and corneal transplants in order to achieve your best possible vision.

Q: What types of astigmatism are there?

What are my options for treatment?

A: Astigmatism can be regular (most common) or irregular (relatively uncommon). Regular astigmatism means that the steepest and flattest meridians of the eye are perpendicular to each other. This can be corrected with glasses, contacts, or refractive surgery (ex. LASIK or PRK). If you have cataracts in addition to astigmatism, you can fix astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery with a special intraocular lens called the toric lens. Additionally, small corneal incisions can be made during cataract surgery to correct mild amounts of astigmatism. These treatment options lead to better vision and less dependence on glasses after cataract surgery.

In irregular astigmatism, the steepest and flattest meridians of the eye are not perpendicular to each other due to uneven points of curvature. This may occur after trauma or a corneal infection leads to corneal scarring. Anterior basement

Victory March in Monessen Shines Light on Christianity

This first ever ‘Victory March’ in Monessen gave Christians the opportunity to publicly pray over the city and declare their faith as an example to others in the Mon Valley. On Sat., July 13, 2024, from 1:00PM– 2:30PM, an actual parade of believers gathered with banners and in trucks, and with a police escort, in The Schooner Center Parking Lot in Monessen. They marched for approximately 25 minutes, braving the heat, from the lot to Second Street and back via Donner Avenue. The event was also held inside the sanctuary of Orchard Christian Fellowship to offer a cool prayer place.

One of the Victory March Pastors said, “This is not a small thing. This is a pretty big deal. This is a great way to show unity within the Body of Christ.” Pastors and leaders from eight different local churches joined the event praying for unification and for the welfare of the city, as people from all over the Mon Valley came together in prayer.

Sponsored by the Mon Valley Community of Pastors and Monessen Mayor Ron Mozer, the day was amazing. Mayor Mozer observed that there were numerous spectators and others coming out of their businesses to join the March. The event proved to be the outworking of 1 Peter 3:9, in which the church is instructed to publicly proclaim the virtues of Him who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light.”
