letter from the president
Greetings, Union Family,
My favorite part of this magazine is the focus on Dr. Larry Inkster. Retiring after 50 years of service, his impact is far reaching. He has coached almost every sport on campus, has served in a variety of administrative roles, and has taught thousands of students. Everyone acquainted with Inkster has benefited from his wisdom, his collegiality, and his humor. We wish Larry and Kathy a very happy and well-deserved retirement.
Dr. Inkster and our faculty, staff, alumnae, and trustees made it possible for Union to weather the storms over the past few years, and the pandemic was a true test of our resilience. I am so proud of the way our campus community adjusted to new ways of program delivery and new protocols for supporting students. Personal attention has always been a hallmark of Union, and while virtual classes, meetings and celebrations are a safe way of gathering, we need physical presence to build community. There’s no better community than Union, and the good work continues.
We continue to expand the undergraduate curriculum to meet employment needs of our region and the interests of students, and we continue to grow our internship opportunities.
We have doubled graduate programs over the past six years to meet the increased demand from individuals wanting to expand their job knowledge and skills, and we have expanded our agreements with other institutions for guaranteed placement in graduate and professional programs.
We support access to all capable students who want a college degree, and our financial aid awarding structure makes a Union degree one of the most affordable options in the state, public or private.
At Union, we are preparing students for a meaningful, successful life. It’s our Union Distinction.
Go Bulldogs!

Dr. Larry Inkster is an exceptional individual who has made significant contributions to Union College over the course of seven decades until his retirement in May 2023. He not only holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from Union College but has also been honored with induction into the Union College Athletic Hall of Fame in multiple categories. Throughout his career, Larry has demonstrated unwavering dedication to the college, as well as to numerous groups, individuals, and organizations.
Initially intending to teach physical education and coach baseball in New Jersey after graduating from Union, Larry’s path took a different turn when Dr. Pete Moore offered him a teaching position in his department and the opportunity to coach the Union baseball team. This provided Larry with the chance to pursue his passions. He furthered his education by earning a master’s degree at Eastern Kentucky University and a doctorate in physical education at the University of Kentucky.

Representing roughly 30 countries from around the world, international students are a vital part of Union’s campus. To better support their transition to college life, Union has opened a new International Student Services office. Seniors Yaniv Zion, from Israel, and Carlos Sainz Barroso, from Spain, will serve as liaisons, providing new international students with needed support and guidance.
“Barbourville is really different from how we used to live outside the United States,” recalls Yaniv.
He explains that in addition to all the adjustments any new college student must make, international students also need help filling out important documents, applying for green cards, and finding transportation to critical locations like the social security office and the airport. Even learning where to buy vegetables can be a hurdle.
Carlos notes that little things like not knowing that “R” stands for Thursday can really add up and make things more challenging than needed. For him, this meant missing a class on his first day.
Since that first day, Carlos has gone on to be elected president of the Student Government Association two years in a row. He also plays soccer, serves as a Justice Leader, and is majoring in chemistry.
Yaniv currently works as a tutor and Spiritual Life Leader. He is majoring in psychology, has been part of Union’s theater crew, and also plays soccer.
Now, Yaniv and Carlos want to share all they have learned about being successful Bulldogs to help new students arriving from outside the U.S.
Carlos says he will encourage new students to get involved on campus and ask questions in class.
“Union is a small school,” he says. “If the teachers know you, they will help you. It’s really positive to keep those connections.”
Yaniv adds, “We just want to make sure new students are not feeling alone at Union.”
Union is committed to serving the academic needs of a diverse community of students in a dynamic, personal environment. As International Student Liaisons, Yaniv and Carlos will meet bi-weekly with new international students, coordinate with college administration to meet their unique needs, assist with resource referrals, and maintain regular hours in the new International Student Services office, located on the first floor of Speed Hall.

Jennifer Hoggan stands on the cool sand of Coronado Beach, waves crashing in the distance. She smiles at the camera, proudly holding what she’s dreamed of for 38 years – her diploma.
“It feels like a puzzle piece going into place,” she says. Jennifer’s connection with Union began in the winter of 2017 when Jane Skidmore and her mother Jane Minton Blair happened to attend the Methodist church in Coronado, California, where Jennifer’s husband is a minister. Later, Union’s online options, affordability, and supportive community turned out to be just what Jennifer needed to make her dream come true.
In 1984, Jennifer began her studies at California State University, Long Beach. She was a student of Comparative Literature but was not able to complete her degree at that time. “I didn’t have my act together,” she says.
As time went on, Jennifer lived a full life as a mother, wife, volunteer, and employee of various jobs. Still, she “always felt that lack” regarding her education. When she filled out job applications or heard people talking about where they got their degree, she says she “felt a little bad inside” and was determined to complete her bachelor’s, too.
By 2019, Jennifer’s three children were nearly grown, and the time to focus on her studies had come.
“I put my family first for a long time, and that was good,” she says, “but as my kids became older and were leaving the nest, it became easier for me to think about going back to school and make it happen.”
Jennifer decided to pursue substance use counseling. She knew there was a great need, others saw her potential as a counselor, and she learned that in California, the path to licensure only required an undergraduate degree, rather than an additional master’s. She enrolled in San Diego Community College with a clear goal in sight.
Then, the pandemic happened. Like everyone, Jennifer experienced heavy emotions and massive changes in her day-to-day life. Her classes suddenly shifted to online. Her youngest son, who was in college himself, came home because his dorm closed. Her husband’s work was constantly in flux. “It was just a tough time for the whole country,” she remembers.
Still, Jennifer persevered. She realized that as an older student, she had developed life skills that helped her navigate this new world and succeed in an online environment. She completed her Associate of Science and Associate of Arts degrees in 2020, along with a certificate in Alcohol and Other Drug Studies.
Union’s online options help Jennifer Hoggan live her dream
By Rachel DorrohNow she was ready for the next step. When Jennifer searched for “affordable online degrees in addiction counseling,” she was excited to see Union College come up second on the list. She was already familiar with Union’s welcoming community and solid track record.
“It felt like things just kept falling into place,” she says.
The synchronicity began one Sunday in 2017. Like any other Sunday, Jennifer’s husband, the Rev. Robert Fuesler, asked his Coronado congregation if anyone was visiting from out of town. When Jennifer heard that two women were in from Kentucky, she made her way down the aisle to them during the passing of the peace. She welcomed them and explained that her daughter Abigail wanted to go to a college in Kentucky and that they would be visiting it soon.
The visitors asked which school, and Jennifer said it was a small one they had probably never heard of. When it turned out to be Union, Jane Skidmore remembers that she and her mother squealed. “I live across the street from Union!” Skidmore told Jennifer.
Skidmore has served on Union’s Board of Trustees for many years and is currently the Vice Chair. Her mother, Jane Minton Blair, has been called Union’s best ambassador and “The First Lady of Union” in recognition of her decades of service and generous philanthropic support.
The two mother-daughter pairs met up for coffee after the service, and Jennifer and Jane Skidmore struck up a friendship that has lasted to this day. Skidmore invited Jennifer and Abigail to stay with her when they visited Union that spring, and Jennifer accepted. She says “Jane’s absolutely gracious demeanor” won her over, and that she is grateful she got to spend time with Blair on that visit before she passed the following year.
“I believe we’re soul sisters,” Skidmore says of Jennifer.
Though Abigail ended up going to a different school, Union’s charming campus and kind community remained fresh in Jennifer’s mind. Skidmore and Blair’s words of wisdom and warm encouragement stuck with her, and she was happy to find that the school they so dearly loved happened to be the perfect fit for her.
“I wanted a program that would be small enough where I would be known as an individual, that could work around my time constraints, that was affordable for my family budget, and obviously, that supported my professional goals. All those things were important to me, and I found them at Union,” Jennifer says.
She applied, was accepted, and was delighted to find that the same person who had “exhibited that legendary Southern graciousness” on her tour in 2017, Drew Horner, was now her admissions counselor. “It was a full-circle moment,” she says.
Drew’s friendly, helpful demeanor matched the rest of what Jennifer found at Union. Like all Union students, she was assigned an academic advisor to be her liaison and offer 1:1 support throughout her time at the school. The flexible class schedules met her needs, and she was impressed with the quality of the content. She notes that teaching online is an “art form” and that her professors excelled at it.
In December of 2022, Jennifer earned her Bachelor of Science in Substance Abuse Counseling from Union. “I’m part of the Bulldog family now. It feels really good,” she says.
Now, Jennifer has passed the licensure test to become an addictions counselor and just needs to accrue her supervised clinical hours. In the meantime, she’s using her education to serve her community. Jennifer volunteers to help those struggling with addiction and is also employed at a residential facility. “It feels good to give back,” she says.
While Jennifer is pleased with the work she’s doing, the biggest changes for her in getting this degree are more personal than professional. “Whenever we pursue a goal and conquer the obstacles that stand
In addition to her other volunteer work, Jennifer helps facilitate a support group for parents of children with a rare disease called Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis, or Wegener’s Granulomatosis.
When Jennifer’s child was diagnosed, she searched for other parents to talk to who understood what her family was experiencing. Once she found them, they created a support group together that has grown to over 150 members from around the world.
Jennifer is passionate about raising awareness of the disease and helping parents find needed support. For more information, contact her at jenniferhogganaods@gmail.com.
in the way of meeting that goal, then we have more confidence in ourselves,” Jennifer says. “I have some of that feeling.”
She notes that her friends and family members have been impacted by her accomplishment, too. “You know, to see me do this, they’ve been moved and inspired to do different things in their lives, too,” she says.
Jennifer also sees the spiritual side of making her dream come true.
“I believe, as a woman of faith, that we are all interconnected in ways that we don’t even fathom. So, when any one of us lives up to more of our own potential, it sends ripples out in ways that we don’t fully understand.”
Skidmore says Jennifer is a special person, “very deep thinking and intuitive,” and that she was thrilled when Jennifer told her about completing her bachelor’s degree. She knows Jennifer will be a great counselor, too. “She’ll be such a life changer for people,” Skidmore says.
Union College is committed to changing lives, one student at a time. The small faculty-to-student ratio means that each student receives an individualized education and the support needed to find their purpose and succeed. Union’s online programs are offered in convenient 8-week courses with multiple admission dates throughout the year.

I somehow managed to win, so I got to take Doc’s bag of frisbees with me that day. Great teacher, a retirement well deserved!!”

“His unwavering passion for Union and its students is contagious. I feel extremely fortunate to have been taught by him. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without his guidance and influence.” Kellianne Holck ’17
“You were always so nice and helpful.” Norm Haney ’99
“You always wore your smile on good days & bad, and every student knew your name! You accomplished so much and made a huge impact on so many students that passed through Union.” Jeff Carper ’97
“May you know that you have made an indelible mark. …Your legacy will live on for generations to come.” Dr. Fidelis Achenjang, Professor of Chemistry
“To many, Union is Larry!” David Austin ’63
At his retirement party, Dr. Inkster brought up Union’s core values, the first letters of which spell out the word CIRCLES. He joked that the “I” and the “L” stand for “Inkster” and “Larry,” but really—he’s not far off. Dr. Inkster represents Union’s values better than anyone we can think of. Thank you for everything, Doc!

Highlights from the 2022-2023 School Year:
1. The women’s volleyball team spent time with senior residents at Christian Care Communities of Corbin.
2. The men’s basketball and baseball teams helped deliver Christmas backpacks full of food, clothes, school supplies, hygiene items, and toys to children in Knox County.
3. Many Bulldogs volunteer at the Union College Boys & Girls Club (UCBGC) throughout the year. These students from the Edna Jenkins Mann School of Nursing taught the kids about healthy habits.
4. For the 2nd year in a row, the UCBGC hosted a Glow-in-the-Dark Easter Egg Hunt for the local community.
5. Union also offered a free Breakfast with the Easter Bunny event in partnership with Barbourville Tourism.
6. Students from multiple majors, organizations, and sports teams volunteered in our local schools during Read Across America week.
7. Over the summer, Dr. Jayme Kilburn facilitated a free month-long community theater workshop.
8. Bulldog Sports Day gave local kids an opportunity to learn from Union coaches and sharpen their skills as they participated in free sports clinics.
9. The Appalachian Gathering for Recovery Solutions brought together hundreds from Eastern Kentucky and beyond to share resources, ideas, and hope for addictions recovery.
10. Union faculty and staff painted windows in downtown Barbourville to celebrate the Fourth of July, organized by Barbourville Tourism and Union’s Kirstie Warren.
Union College, known for its long-standing tradition of conferring degrees in May, made a significant change to its academic calendar in 2021. Recognizing the importance of timely celebrations, the college introduced a December commencement ceremony, providing an additional opportunity for students to commemorate their achievements. On December 10, 2022, our December commencement ceremony took place, followed by the traditional May commencement ceremony on May 6, 2023. Over the course of the academic year, a total of 281 students proudly earned their undergraduate and graduate degrees. With the conferral of degrees, the culmination of years of hard work and dedication, the graduates joined the proud ranks of Union College alumni. They embarked on a new chapter, equipped with knowledge, skills, and experiences that will shape their futures and enable them to make meaningful contributions to society.
Faculty Friends
A series where we reconnect with some of our cherished faculty members and delve into their post-retirement adventures
After retiring, Dr. Ella Hensley found herself surrounded by a growing family of pets when she married her husband. Despite not having had pets since her youth on a farm, she now cares for 19 cats and three dogs, which keeps her quite occupied. In her free time, when she’s not tending to her “fur children,” she shares delightful adventures with her husband in their motor home, exploring nature through hiking and photography. Although they mainly explore states close to Kentucky, her ultimate favorite destination remains the captivating Great Smoky Mountains.
Embracing her newfound leisure time, Dr. Hensley has rekindled her love for reading. No longer engrossed in professional journals as a teacher, she has immersed herself in the captivating mystery novels of J.A. Jance, her newfound favorite author. However, her heart still belongs to Sometimes a Great Notion by Ken Kesey, a timeless book that holds a special place as her all-time favorite.
Dr. Ella Hensley taught economics at Union for 30 years, and one prominent thing she said she learned was to “understand how wonderful and unique Union students are.” She cherished the opportunity to connect with them both inside and outside the classroom, forming lasting bonds that enriched her teaching experience.
Arriving at Union in 1980 to impart his knowledge of history, Dr. John C. Taylor found a true home for 33 fulfilling years. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in establishing both the Wilderness Club and the Pine Mountain Grotto, nurturing a sense of adventure among Union’s students with a passion for cave exploration. Following his retirement in 2013, his love for history and the great outdoors continued to drive him toward exciting new projects.
At present, he is diligently preparing a presentation on the Civil War history of a county in West Virginia, a place close to his heart as he owns a farm there. Additionally, he is engrossed in curating an awe-inspiring slideshow, comprising over 10,000 photos from his wilderness escapades with students during their time at Union.
Dr. John TaylorFirmly believing in professionalizing hobbies, Dr. Taylor’s advice to his students was to “marry for money, read history for love.” To him, Union was the epitome of perfection, offering a beautiful campus and the wonderful opportunity to engage with a diverse array of people.
Dr. Ella HensleyThank You!
Thanks to all who helped make a difference for Union College students during Dear Old Union Day on May 17, 2023.
Together, we raised more than $75,000 for scholarships, academic and student life programs, athletics, and departments.
