Pictured are BHS students James Humphries, Alexea Mullins and Desiree Reyes. BHS students who are studying Japanese through Georgia Virtual School participated in a relief effort to support the victims of the tsunami/earthquake. Following the Japanese tradition, students folded paper cranes and collected pledges to send to victims. BHS students folded 103 origami cranes to be added to those from other students in GAVS throughout the state. Sadako was 2 years old when an atomic bomb fell on Hiroshima in 1945. When she was 12, she was diagnosed with leukemia and given less than a year to live. A friend showed her how to fold paper cranes and told her that if a person folded 1,000 paper cranes, they might get a wish granted. Sadako believed the story and wished to get well. She began working hard to fold one thousand cranes. At the time of her death in October 1955, she had completed only 644 cranes. Her friends were so moved that they folded the remaining 356 cranes to complete her goal so they could be used in her funeral. These children kept working for more than two years and raised about $400,000 to erect a monument to honor and remember Sadako and the cranes to promote peace in the world. In honor of this effort and her story, approximately nine metric tons of paper cranes are sent to Hiroshima each year. Today, Japanese people, especially young people, still take time to fold a thousand paper cranes when someone is recovering from illness, needing encouragement or trying hard to reach a very difficult goal. They are a symbol of peace, love and encouragement.

Eagle Ridge students spend money wisely

Mrs. Crane and Mrs. Eubanks’ kindergarten class continues to identify and count money by participating in an incentive of earning coins for doing their ‘jobs’ at school. When a student is ‘caught’ displaying positive behavior in class, she/he earns money to add to their pouch. Pictured are students Antonio Edwards and Ollieah Lary (right) showing off their money pouches. On Friday, the students can spend their coins in the class store. Also pictured is Jaylen Walker (left) spending his earned money in the class store.

Midway students study stars

Ms. Ruby Cox, OE teacher from Midway Elementary, conducted an activity at Georgia College on stars with students from Midway Elementary. The students were third-graders who visited the college for a field trip entitled ‘Fossils to Space.’

EBLA students put on a show at Blandy

EBLA Academy students recently teamed with Blandy Hills Elementary students to perform a puppet show about friendship. The play was presented by the Spanish students to the Blandy students in both Spanish and English. Shown are Shelby Thigpen and Brooke Bentley preparing their puppets for the show as well as a shot of the puppets on stage. Thanks Mrs. Bentley and Ms. Cosme for working together to give the Blandy students a great show!

JMA journalism students visit The Union-Recorder In February, John Milledge Academy’s Journalism class had the opportunity to visit The Union Recorder. The class toured the building and learned about the history of this newspaper, and saw first-hand all of the hard work that goes into producing a daily paper. They met reporters, editors and workers who were readily available to answer questions. Everyone was very friendly and the students learned many techniques to take back and use in writing magazine articles and working on the yearbook. The Union Recorder was kind enough to provide lunch, and the students had a wonderful time discussing future college and career plans while eating with the staff.

Mangus is new principal at Sinclair Christian Academy The week of March 28, Sinclair Christian Academy welcomed a new principal to work along side the Administrator, Heather Schulze, to continue building programs and excellence in the quickly growing school. He prefers to be called Captain Mangus or Principal Mangus. Before becoming principal of Sinclair Christian Academy, he served in the United States Army. He has visited numerous countries and states in his life, ranging from Miami, Fla., to Afghanistan. He has been featured in Time magazine; his wife, Ashley Mangus, has been quoted in a few magazines as well. When asked what his goals were as principal, he shared his vision of quality education and programs before

GPAs, and extracurricular activities such as track and cross-country. Principal Mangus says God led him to this position through prayer, as well as through circumstances in his life. He graduated college with an MPA, which happened to be a requirement for this job. He also says God’s timing was great,

because two weeks after retiring from the army, he was offered this position. Principal Mangus says: “We are a good school, we will be great.” Sinclair Christian Academy looks forward to the continued momentum and growth ahead with Captain Mangus as our Principal.
