Is My Child Eating Enough? With childhood obesity epidemics on the rise, many parents and healthcare providers are concerned about the dietary habits of children. However, many parents to toddlers or even school-aged children may wonder if their children are eating enough. Children often go through periods of finicky eating or disinterest in food. It is not uncommon to have a child who eats a wide variety of foods when he is younger only to dislike the same foods a year or two later. Most doctors say that if a child is growing and active, chances are that he is healthy and getting enough food. If the opposite is true, there may be some cause for concern. Parents should consult the child's pediatrician if eating habits seem to be compromising their child's growth or energy levels. There are estimates that a young child should eat about a tablespoon of food for each year of the child's age. Therefore, a 3-year-old should be getting at least 3 tablespoons of food. If the child is interested in more food, certainly offer it. If he pushes food away after eating, don't force more on him. Most children should have 3 meals and 2 snacks per day. Toddlers may not eat enough in one meal
to remain full until the next meal. Small, healthy snacks of vegetables, whole-grain crackers or low-fat dairy products can help take the edge off of hunger. Health experts say that it can take several introductions to a new food before the child becomes accustomed to its taste and texture. It may be a good idea to offer a variety of new foods together with something he already enjoys eating. It's also common for kids to only eat one type of food over and over again. Don't worry that the child is not getting enough nutrition. Chances are he will grow out of this stage and soon enjoy a variety of foods. Threats or punishments to eat will only serve to cause a poor relationship with food, advise childhood experts. Also, don't bribe a child to eat with the reward of a snack or dessert later on. This sets a poor example of eating and could lead to behavioral problems. Many children develop finicky eating habits. However, as long as a youngster is growing regularly and has plenty of energy for daily activities, there's a good chance that the foods being eaten are not interfering with health.

As anyone who's ever attempted dieting knows, advice on weight loss comes from every corner. Friends might swear by the latest dieting trend while family members may be just as adamantly convinced the trend doesn't have merit. So what's true and what's false? Simply put, combining a healthy diet with regular exercise is the best way to lose weight and keep that weight off. While most adults are fully aware of that fact, that doesn't stop them from finding the latest fad and letting it dictate their eating habits for days or even weeks. For those about to diet, consider the following good and bad diet fads. The Good * Portion control: Many diets emphasize the importance of portion control. Research has indicated it's not just what we eat that causes weight gain, but how much we're eating as well. In a study in the American Journal of Public Health, researchers found that cookies are 700 percent bigger than the suggested USDA standards. And it's not just cookies that are much bigger than recommended, as our servings of pasta (480 percent), muffins (333 percent) and bagels (195 percent) are much bigger than they should be. While not all diets that promote portion control are necessarily healthy, portion control on its own is a healthy way for everyone to approach their daily diet. * Lifestyle change: Individuals who want to lose weight should look for dietary tips that promote a change in lifestyle and not just changes in diet. Look for diets that don't have a timeline, promoting fast weight loss in 'X' amount of weeks. A diet that promotes a longterm commitment to eating healthy foods while also encouraging daily exercise is one that's likely going to be more successful and beneficial than one that promises significant weight loss in a short period of time. The Bad * One food can do it all: Nearly every dieter has heard of a diet that promises you can eat all you want of a specific food and
Health Directory 2011 • April - June
still lose weight so long as that's all you're eating. However, focusing on a specific food is certain to deprive dieters of nutrients they sorely need. Cutting out entire food groups means dieters won't be enjoyed a balanced diet. Also, dieters will begin to crave the foods they're not getting, which could lead to bingeing. Another side effect to one-food diets is that certain foods can cause some unenjoyable side effects, including dehydration or gastrointestinal problems. Look for balance in a diet, which should eliminate one-food diets from consideration. * Misguided vegetarianism: While vegetarianism isn't bad, dieters often apply it incorrectly. When applied correctly, a vegetarian diet has been linked to all sorts of benefits, including lower rates of obesity and heart disease. However, dieters often mistakenly eat a vegetarian diet with a foundation of cheese and pasta, which can actually cause weight gain. Carbohydrate-rich foods, while they might be vegetarian, will likely result in weight added as opposed to lost. When adopting a vegetarian diet, be sure to include whole grains and fruit and eat foods like nuts, beans or even tofu to ensure you're getting enough protein. * Bye-bye, carbohydrates: Arguably no diet is more popular than the one that advocates eliminating carbohydrates. This is problematic, especially for those who want to combine their healthy diet with exercise. Carbohydrates are ideal foods for boosting energy, which dieters will need if they want to exercise regularly. Whole-grain breads, oatmeal and brown rice are all beneficial carbohydrate sources. For those desiring to eliminate some forms of carbs from their diets, eliminate white bread and white rice, as those are low in nutrients. When it comes to dieting, there are certainly plenty of options touting incredible weight loss in short periods of time. But dieters should always look for healthy ways to lose weight and keep it off, which often includes some combination of a well-balanced diet that promotes moderation.

When a person decides to make a commitment to a healthier lifestyle, that decision is often accompanied by the decision to join a gym. Gyms can vary greatly. Some cater to specific activities, such as kick boxing or martial arts, while others are more general in scope, with weight training and cardiovascular equipment and access to personal trainers. Regardless of which type of facility an individual is hoping to join, certain external factors go a long way to dictating whether or not joining the gym will be a success. When looking for an exercise facility, the following items should be taken into consideration before signing an agreement. * Location: Even the most ardent of gym rats would say it helps a great deal to find a gym that's conveniently located. If the gym is too far away or getting there requires sitting in heavy traffic, then men and women are much less likely to visit the gym as they would be to visit a gym that's right down the street or easy to get to. When looking for an exercise facility, find one that's either close to home or close to the office (preferably both if you work close to home). For those who work far away from home, the gym's location should ideally be closer to home to promote working out on weekends when you won't be anywhere near the office. * Fellow members: Certain gyms might prove intimidating or uncomfortable because of their existing members. While the members themselves might be warm and friendly, those new to working out might be intimidated if everyone else in the building looks like a professional bodybuilder. In addition, women sometimes feel more comfortable working out at an all-female gym. * Cost: The cost of gym membership is arguably the foremost consideration for many people when choosing a gym, especially since the economy remains largely unpredictable. When looking for an exercise facility, inquire about membership costs as well as any initiation fees you may incur or discounts you may be eligible for. Because of the struggling economy, many gyms have waived or are open to waiving sign-up or initiation costs, which can cost
Page 5
in the hundreds of dollars at some facilities. Also, when discussing cost with a facility employee, ask if there are family discounts or if memberships are reduced if fees are paid all at once instead of every month. For example, a gym might charge $600 annually ($50 per month), but give a 10 percent discount to any members who pay a year's worth of dues at sign-up. When discussing membership costs, keep in mind many gyms are open to negotiation, but prospective members must initiate any such negotiations. * Membership rights: Many gyms boast different types of memberships. Some memberships are all-access and allow members to use the weight room, sauna, pool, etc. Other memberships might cost less but not offer as much access. For instance, a basic membership might offer access to the weight room and cardiovascular machines, but not to the pool or sauna. Choosing the right membership depends on the individual. For those who don't swim and won't enjoy a post-workout steam, then the basic membership can save money while still meeting all of the desired needs. For those who want all-access, the more expensive membership might be more up your alley. Whichever membership is the better fit, be sure the membership agreement lists your rights as a member before signing any paperwork. * Hours of operation: Some people prefer to workout before going to work, while others want to sleep in and exercise after a day at the office. Individuals should find a gym that fits their schedules and workout preferences. It's also good to inquire about holiday hours of operation. A good gym won't shut down entirely during a holiday, and instead stay open on at least a limited schedule. * Equipment: Even those new to working out should be able to tell if equipment is up-to-date or outdated. A gym with outdated equipment is best to avoid, as older equipment could increase risk of injury. A gym with the latest equipment is a gym that likely emphasizes giving its members the best possible environment in which to workout, and that's important for all fitness enthusiasts, but especially those who are just beginning.

Encouraging Good
Hygiene Habits
for Tweens
(MS) -- With school, sports, friends and hobbies, today's tweens lead busy and active lives, and sometimes they don't take the time -- or know -- to practice good hygiene. While discussing proper hygiene with your tween can be difficult, it is possible to address the topic without making him or her feel uncomfortable or self-conscious. One approach parents can take is to appeal to your tweens' growing maturity by making it clear that these self-care tasks are their responsibility. Giving your tween the respect and encouragement to make their own choices in these transitional years can help them develop healthy habits for life. To help empower your tween to take better care of their hygiene, parents can follow these tips: Make it Fun: The tween years are all about finding a unique sense of style. This also applies to cosmetics and accessories. Allow your tween to choose their shampoos, soaps and oral care products. This will encourage them to take interest in their hygiene without you having to ask. Brace Face: Tooth brushing can be a struggle at this age. Your child may go in the bathroom for 30 seconds and declare that he or she has brushed. Kids should know that good oral care is just as important as taking a shower, especially if your child has braces. Make the process a little easier and ensure they are brushing for the proper amount of time by keeping a two minute timer in the bathroom. By supplying your tween with products in the flavors (e.g. nottoo-spicy, not-too-sweet) and cool designs
they will like, such as the Crest Pro-Health FOR ME Fluoride Anticavity Toothpaste, they might even forget they are doing something healthy and those two minutes will fly! "Oral health is an important issue particularly for kids in their adolescent years. Tooth decay is still recognized as the most common chronic disease affecting children in the United States. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, 51 million hours of school are lost each year due to dental-related illness1," says Dr. Jennifer Salzer, orthodontist, dentist and mother of a tween. "Not only can poor oral hygiene affect the health and well-being of a child, it also plays a role in self-esteem." Under Armor: Puberty is the first time adolescents have to deal with body odor. Help your tween understand how to control odors by explaining the difference between deodorant, which controls bacteria while adding fragrance, and antiperspirant, which stops or limits sweating. Remind your tween that both deodorant and antiperspirant will help if they put it on before they start sweating, not after. Skincare 101: Changing hormones typically bring about oilier skin, especially on the nose and forehead. Teach your tween to wash their face once or twice a day with a cleanser and discourage them from picking, as this causes inflammation and scarring. Lead by Example: Whether they admit it or not, your tween notices your habits. Set an example by showing that a healthy hygiene routine is important to you too.

(MS) -- If you're 65 or older, the flu prevention message for you this year is simple: Get the flu shot as soon as you can. There's no need for two shots like last year -- just one shot will help protect you for the 201011 flu season. This year -- and every year -- health officials urge you to get the seasonal flu vaccine as soon as it's available in your community. Older adults are at greater risk of serious flu-related complications (like pneumonia), hospital stays and dying from the flu when compared with young, healthy adults. This is because the body's ability to fight illness drops as you age. In fact, each year about 9 out of 10 seasonal flu-related deaths and more than 6 out of 10 seasonal flu-related hospital stays in the United States occur in people 65 years and older. This year, there is only one vaccine for the 2010-11 flu season. "This year's flu vaccine will protect against the 2009 H1N1virus that caused so much illness last season and two other influenza viruses," said Dr. Anne Schuchat, Assistant Surgeon General of the U.S. Public Health Service and CDC's Director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. "One of which is an H3N2 virus, which usually hits older adults harder. And having one flu vaccine will make it easier to get the protection you need against flu all season long." Flu vaccine supplies are expected to be plentiful, but you should get the flu shot as
Page 7
soon as it's available, as the timing of influenza circulation is unpredictable and sometimes starts in the early Fall. This year, you also have a choice in dosage for the flu vaccine -- a regular vaccine and a higher-dose option are available for people 65 years and older. The higherdose vaccine may cause more mild side effects than the regular vaccine as it may result in a stronger immune response. These mild side effects may include pain and redness where the shot was given, headache, fever, and muscle aches. CDC has not shown a preference for either type of flu vaccine because both vaccines will provide protection against flu this season. Talk to your doctor about which vaccine is best for you. Getting a flu shot every year is your best protection against the flu and its complications. Because flu viruses may change each year, even if you got the 2009 H1N1 flu shot or the seasonal flu shot last year, you still need this year's vaccine. You can get a flu shot from your doctor, pharmacist, or local health clinic and at flu clinics in local retail outlets. CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older get the flu vaccine, including those 65 years of age and older. For more information about the dangers of flu and the benefits of the flu vaccine, talk to your doctor or nurse, visit http://www.cdc.gov, or call CDC at 1 800 CDC INFO (800 232 4636).

Healthy Additions to Your Daily Diet
According to a report from the American Heart Association Statistics Committee and Stroke Statistics Committee, heart disease figured to cost the United States in excess of $315 billion in 2010 alone. While there's no single cause of heart disease, a person's lifestyle can greatly reduce or increase his or her risk for heart disease. One of the best ways a man or woman can reduce the risk for heart disease is to watch what he or she eats. A poor diet can cause obesity and high cholesterol and increase a person's risk for diabetes. In a 2008 report, the National Center for Health Statistics noted that 33.9 percent of adults in the United States could qualify as overweight or obese in 2005-06. In addition, high blood pressure affected 30.5 percent of adults during that same time period. Being overweight or obese and having high blood pressure are risk factors for heart disease, and all can be controlled by adults who commit to changing their diets. Though there are risk factors for these conditions besides poor diet, maintaining a healthy diet is a big step for adults looking to reduce their risk of heart disease as well as a host of other ailments. When added to a diet, the following foods can help healthconscious men and women live healthier lives. * Almonds: Almonds can help men and women control their weight and improve their heart health. What's more, almonds, which are a good source of protein, fiber and vitamin E, might help reduce a person's risk of Alzheimer's disease. * Coffee: The medical community has varying opinions on coffee, but when consumed in moderate doses, coffee might help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and, for men, Parkinson's disease. Coffee might also help improve memory and mood, but adults should consult with their physician for advice as to the medical benefits of coffee.
* Grapes: Grapes are a great source of vitamin C and potassium. Grapes also provide a good dose of quercetin, which could help men and women strengthen their immune systems. * Ginger: Men and women with arthritis might want to consider adding more ginger to their diets. Ginger has been linked to reducing arthritis pain, and can also help calm an upset stomach and quell nausea. * Kale: Kale is often mistaken for spinach. While spinach is healthy, too, kale is among the many green vegetables that pack a powerful and nutritious punch. Kale is a strong source of vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, and lutein. In addition, kale is a good source of zeaxathan, which can help reduce the incidence of certain cancers and help maintain eyesight. * Pecans: Like almonds, pecans are a good source of vitamin E, particularly a type of vitamin E known as gamma tocopherol. Pecans are also full of antioxidants, which can strengthen the body's immune system. * Sweet potatoes: Some might scoff at the notion that a food with the word "sweet" in its name can actually be healthy. However, sweet potatoes are a great source of vitamin A and vitamin C, and they're also high in fiber. Sweet potatoes are also a great source of lycopene, which may help fight heart disease and even certain cancers. When it comes to getting healthy, men and women can look to several foods that may reduce their risks for a host of ailments, including heart disease, the leading cause of death for both men and women. But adults should consult with their physician before making any changes to their daily diets.

Spring Fever Syndrome There are many people who associate the arrival of spring with a renewed sense of energy that borders on the frantic. But such spring fever is actually quite the opposite ... at least in the beginning. Spring fever is a term used to classify a mood change characterized by low energy, fatigue and apathy early in the spring season. Similar to seasonal affective disorder (SAD), spring fever is a mental condition brought on by the change in seasons. It is common in people who also suffer from SAD. Eventually, spring fever may evolve into feelings of restlessness, intense nervous excitement, high-energy spurts and loss of appetite. The condition is a chemical response in the body to its carcadian rhythm spurred on by sunlight. In the winter, there are fewer hours of sunlight. Sunlight has a direct effect on the production of serotonin and melatonin. Serotonin is the feel-good chemical messenger that affects mood and other bodily functions. In the darker, colder seasons, serotonin can be in short supply, which is why many people feel blue these times of the year. Melatonin is the chemical component that is related to sleep and wakefullness. When there are more hours of dark-
ness, the body produces more melatonin, which in turn makes a person tired. When the spring season arrives, the body can take a while to readjust to the correct levels. Therefore, a person may initially have residual melatonin and a short supply of serotonin in the early spring, accounting for the tiredness and irritability. As the chemical messengers decrease and increase according to sunlight, the reverse takes effect. Aperson may have extra energy and actually feel little need to sleep. There is also some biological evidence that the seasonal change may affect human conception. Studies show that late winter and spring babies are commonplace, meaning that a number of conceptions take place during the warm-weather months. As the body readjusts hormonally to the changes in seasons, there could be a fluctuation of moods until the full feelings of vitality known during the spring season set in. While spring often evokes feelings of elation and rejuvenation in adults and children alike, it is important to recognize that suicide rates also increase with the change in seasons, perhaps as a result hormonal imbalances in the body.

3 Tips to Maximize Your Abdominal Exercises • Don’t rush. Be very slow and smooth with the ab exercises. Ideally, try to take 2-4 counts to come up and 2-4 counts to come down. • Concentrate, concentrate, and concentrate on those abdominal muscles. Visualize in your mind the contraction and working your muscles as you perform an exercise. • Before you begin, think about pulling your belly button in toward your spine. Now keep it in that position throughout the entire move. You may need to remind yourself periodically to keep this position.
