THROUGH 1817

1933

PUTNAM COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION Education in Putnam County can be traced back to 1817 when the first co-educational school was opened in July of that year. Eatonton Academy became the first city school open to males and females while many smaller school settings, such as churches and small one room school houses, dotted the surrounding countryside serving those students unable to attend school in town. In the early 1900’s, the public school system within Putnam County consisted of 14 sub-school districts. Under the school-districting plan the country had 38 schools recognized at that time. In the early 70’s, Putnam County schools integrated and opened one campus per age grouping that served all of the county’s students, regardless of race. Putnam County is now a Charter School System with 4 schools, a primary, elementary, middle and high serving approximately 2780 students.

Putnam General Hospital has been in continuous operation since its opening on March 1, 1968. The original facility was comprised of 38 beds, when the first patient was transferred from Jordan Hospital to Putnam General on March 1, 1968. In 1974, through addition and expansion, a surgery wing was opened with 17 beds. Then in June of 1978, a modern intensive care unit was opened with 3 beds. After completing a $5 million dollar renovation in 1993, the hospital was a modern state-of-the-art 50-bed hospital, including five ICU beds. In 2004, the hospital began expanding once again to enlarge the areas of Physical Therapy, Cardiac Rehabilitation, and storage. As part of this expansion, two additional recovery beds were added to the Operating Room area, as well as a family waiting room. The expansion also brought the hospital’s CT Scanner into the hospital from an outside building. The hospital now serves as a 25-bed critical access facility. Our Emergency Department, Surgical Services, Lab, Radiology, and other support services are attractive, functional departments that enhance our ability to provide professional care with a personal touch.
