Overall, the magazine ranks Union 15th among regional universities in the South, which means Union has been classified as a Top Tier institution each year since 1997 and has ranked among the top 20 regional universities in the South for five consecutive years. Editors also identify Union as an “A+ option for serious B students.” Princeton Review Princeton Review ranks Union among the top schools in the Southeast. Nationally, 623 schools received this regional ranking, which is only accorded to about 25% of the nation’s colleges and universities. Chronicle of Higher Education: Great Colleges to Work For After a survey of 44,000 employees at 310 colleges and universities, the magazine chose 30 four-year institutions for its honor roll of Great Colleges to Work For. Union not only made that short list, but was also among only three schools to be recognized in 11 separate rating categories. America’s 100 Best College Buys An objective and independent research company surveys more than a thousand U.S. colleges and universities each year, then analyzes the information to find out which schools offer the best education for the dollar based upon academic performance indicators and comparative costs. President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll Initiated in 2006, this award recognizes colleges and universities nationwide that support innovative and effective community service and service-learning programs. Union is among a select group of institutions that has made the list in each of the years it has been compiled. College Access and Opportunity Guide Union is listed among 284 U.S. colleges “committed to serving and supporting today’s firstgeneration, low-income and traditionally underserved college-bound students.” Union is one of only four Tennessee institutions so honored. Colleges of Distinction Union and the other schools chosen for inclusion in this guide exhibit four distinctives of superior colleges and universities: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant communities and successful outcomes. Templeton Foundation Union is listed in the Foundation’s guide entitled Colleges that Encourage Character Development. Schools included in this listing have “exemplary programs, presidents, and colleges and universities that inspire students to lead ethical and civic-minded lives.”

director of athletics Tommy Sadler enters his 27th year of service at Union University, and the third in his role as the Director of Athletics for Union. Sadler was named to this position after serving the 2008-09 year as the acting athletics director. He follows in the footsteps of Dr. David Blackstock, who had been Union’s Athletic Director for the past 34 years. Sadler, a native of Jackson, is a 1972 graduate of South Side High School and a 1976 graduate of Union University. During his time at Union, Sadler played four years of baseball for the Bulldogs. In 1981, he received his Master of Education from the University of Memphis. His tenure at Union began in 1985 as director of public relations. After a year in that role, he became the university’s director of corporate and foundation support, a position he held for 10 years. In 1996, Sadler then moved into his previous role as associate director of athletics.
Sadler earned the Union University Staff Member of the Year in 1994. In 2010, Sadler was named the TranSouth Conference Athletic Director of the Year. Sadler has also been very active in athletics at the conference level. He is beginning his ninth year as the president of the TranSouth Conference, of which Union is a member. Prior to this time as president, he served the conference as its vice president.

“Tommy Sadler has faithfully served Union University in a variety of ways through the years, but his key contribution has been in his work with the athletic department,” Dockery said. “He is respected by all of our coaches, by those who support the athletic program and by the leadership of the university. At this transitional time in the life of our athletic department, I know of no one better to help us chart a future course for that department than Tommy Sadler.” Sadler and his wife Michelle, a teacher in the Jackson-Madison County School District, make their home in Jackson.

head coach David Niven begins his third season as the Union University men’s basketball head coach, and his 15th season with the Bulldog program. In his first two seasons at Union, Niven served as a volunteer assistant coach, and then became full-time in 1999. In 2003, Niven earned the position of associate head coach for the Union men’s basketball program and became head coach in 2009. He spent the 1996-97 season as an assistant coach at Oklahoma Baptist. In his first season as head coach, Niven posted a 26-8 record overall and a 14-2 mark in the TranSouth. His team earned the conference regular season and tournament titles, and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament. Niven followed that first season with a 26-7 overall record and 14-2 league mark. Union shared the regular season championship and advanced to another NAIA National Tournament. Niven’s career record as a head coach is 52-15 (.776).
Niven is deeply committed to excellence both on and off the court. He aligns himself with the identity, mission and vision of Union in both his coaching and mentoring of his players. He is devoted to the development of his players physically, academically and spiritually. “I feel a calling upon my life to fulfill the Great Commission as a college basketball coach”, says Niven. “I want to teach my players how to place their hope in eternal things and not the things of this world.”

Union president Dr. David S. Dockery says, “Dave has demonstrated over and over again his deep commitment to the identity, mission and vision of this university. His life exemplifies a ‘team above self’ mind set that will, I am sure, characterize in days ahead the attitude of his team both on and off the court.” During his time at Union, Niven has assumed the responsibility of coordinating the recruiting efforts for the Bulldogs. He has recruited and signed numerous All-Americans, as well as, the 2002 NAIA Player of the Year. Niven has also signed 10 players that have gone on to play professional basketball in the United States and countries all over the world.
More importantly, the statistic he is most proud of is the 41 players that have graduated during his time as their academic advisor. “No coaching staff in the country will place more emphasis on the academic success of our players than we do here at Union”, says Niven. “Each player will have the commitment from our staff to prepare them for life after basketball.” Niven, a 1996 graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University, spent his playing career at OBU and finished with a four-year career record 121-24. In those four years, he played on teams that were ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, advanced to the NAIA National Championship game, and Coaching Records (1969-Present) two Final Fours. He also (a complete list can be found in the record book) became the first player to help lead the Bison to Current Head Coach (Year-by-Year) four consecutive national Year Head Coach Record, TSAC tournaments. While at OBU in 1997, as assistant 2010-11 David Niven 26-7, 14-2 coach for the Bison, Niven 2009-10 David Niven 26-8, 14-2 received his Master of Career: 52-15 (.765) Education degree from Past Union Coaches East Central University Year Head Coach Record in Ada, Oklahoma. He received valuable coaching 1994-2009 Ralph Turner 362-151 (.706) experience as the Bison 1989-94 Rick McCormick 88-74, (.543) went 36-4 and made it to 1987-89 Bob Ward 30-34, (.469) the 1997 NAIA National 1974-87 Jim Swope 185-160, (.536) Championship Finals. 1974-75 Jim Simmons 41-61, (.402) Niven and his wife Mandy Beth have been married for eight years. They have three 1967-68, 69-71 Bill Henry 52-24 (.684) children, Jacob (5), Zack (4) and Emma (2).

Lydic started his coaching career at Asbury where he was the student assistant coach for the men’s basketball team during the 1999-2000 campaign.
After graduation, Lydic returned home to work as the administrative assistant for the men’s basketball program at Colorado State University. In 2003-04, he was promoted to director of basketball operations at Colorado State. In 2004, Lydic started work as a graduate assistant at Valdosta (Ga.) State University where he earned his masters degree in Physical Education. He then moved to west Tennessee where he worked as the assistant coach at the University of Tennessee at Martin for one season. From 2007-10, Lydic was the assistant coach at Pearl River (Miss.) Community College. While at Pear River, the team won 61 games and Lydic was a key part of leading the team to the 2009-10 Mississippi JUCO State Championship with a 24-5 record. Union head coach David Niven says, “Trevor brings passion and enthusiasm to his work here at Union. He is a tireless worker and has really raised the level of our individual workouts. Trevor really enjoys working with players to help them improve their skills on the floor and in their lives Trevor Lydic off of it. season outlook
The Union University men’s basketball team enters the 2011-12 season under the leadership of David Niven, now in his third season as head coach. The Bulldogs are looking to continue the momentum of last year’s TranSouth regular season co-championship and a 14th appearance in the NAIA National Tournament. However, Union will do so with an almost entirely new squad. Union returns three players, two of which started last season. Four Bulldogs graduated last season, including Stan McNeil, who was selected to the TranSouth All-Conference team. They bring back two returning starters who saw a significant amount of playing time, Skyler Vaden and Antoine Hall. Union will look to several players among the group of ten newcomers to contribute to this season’s success.
Union has four seniors this season, two of which are returning for a senior year of action. Vaden and Hall started for Union last season, with Vaden starting in 32 of the 33 games and Hall starting in 30 games. The returning seniors will be called upon this season for leadership. Two newcomers round out the senior class. David Lane and Leventrice Gray transferred to Union for their last season of college basketball. They will both be expected to contribute in major ways to this team. The junior class is made up of one returning player and three newcomers. Samuel Danache played in all 33 games last season for Union. Dani Marti, AJ Roberts and Anthony Freeman, Jr. round out the junior class and will be called upon often to help the Bulldogs this season and next year. The freshman class is the biggest class on the Bulldog roster with five players. Paul Valdor is a red-shirt freshman who sat out last year and spent that time in practice working on his game. Four true freshmen make up a large portion of the Bulldog roster this season. They include Giosha Koguashvili, Pedro Faller, Will Duncan and Eric Leisey. Each will have opportunities to contribute to the program early in their careers. Once again, Union faces a tough non-conference schedule this season with teams that have participated in the national tournament in recent years. Of Union’s 14 non-conference games, 12 will be played against national tournament teams Belhaven (Miss.), McKendree (Ill.), William Carey (Miss.), Tougaloo (Miss.), Emmanuel (Ga.) and Campbellsville (Ky.). Union will also face an improving TranSouth Conference, who boasted Martin Methodist as a national tournament semifinalist last season. Union, Martin Methodist and Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) all advanced to the national tournament. Coach Niven and second year assistant coach, Trevor Lydic will work hard to build this team and merge the newcomers into the Union system. This talented squad hopes to be playing for a ninth TranSouth title and a 15th appearance in the national tournament in March. Union is playing in their final season of NAIA competition as the school looks to begin its NCAA DII membership process in 2012-13. Skyler Vaden
6-2 • 175 lb. • Senior • Guard Hometown: Los Angeles, Calif. Previous School: Bakersfield CC Birthday: December 8
Coach’s Comments. Skyler will be one of the best returning players in our conference this season. After playing only at the point last year, he will have the chance to play at both the point and off guard spots. Skyler has a great feel for getting to the basket and creating shots for himself and his teammates. He should be our stopper on the defensive end as well. Union Career. (‘10-’11)...Vaden started and played in 32 games....recorded 303 points....20 3-pointers.....was named a TranSouth Scholar Athlete. Before Union. Vaden transferred to Union after spending two seasons at Bakersfield (Calif.) Community College. He averaged 11.7 points, four assists and two steals per game. Vaden was named first team all-conference in the Western State Conference. He ranked No. 3 in the conference with his 2.3 steals per game. Vaden, a native of Los Angeles, played his high school basketball at Washington (Calif.) Prep. He averaged 17 points per game as a senior and was named first team in the Marine League.

Antoine Hall
6-6 • 200 lb. • Senior • Guard Hometown: Douglasville, GA. Previous School: Gadsden State CC Birthday: October 25
Coach’s Comments. Antoine comes back as one of the best perimeter shooters in our conference. He shot a very good percentage last year and with improved post players this year we expect that to be even better. Antoine continues to be the vocal leader of our team. He does a great job of setting the tempo for practice each day. Union Career. (‘10-’11)...Hall played in 30 games, starting 30 times....recorded 383 points....87 3-pointers.....named one-time TranSouth Player of the Week....was named a TranSouth Scholar Athlete. Before Union. Hall transferred to Union from Gadsden State (Ala.) Community College. While at Gadsden State, Hall averaged 11.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. He led the team with a conference 3-point shooting percentage of .413. The Douglasville native posted season highs in a game versus Beville State (Ala.) where he scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds, including a 5-for-6 effort from behind the arc. Hall played his high school basketball for Douglasville High School. He averaged 15 points and four rebounds and was a 3-year varsity player. As a senior, Hall was named to the all-district team.

Samuel Danache

Coach’s Comments. Sam comes back in his junior year with more experience than anybody. After redshirting as a freshman, Sam is entering his fourth year with the program. Sam is one of the strongest guards on our team. He has the ability to get all the way to the rim very quickly and has proven he can finish with either hand. Union Career. (‘08-’09)...Red Shirt. David Lane
6-1 • 175 lb. • Senior • Guard Hometown: Akron, Ohio Previous School: Northern State Univ. Birthday: April 14
#3
Coach’s Comments. David comes in with the opportunity to make us a much faster team his season. He is the quickest player on our team and will be very tough to stay in front of. His ability to shoot the 3 as well as get to the basket make him a tough cover. He comes in with the mentality of making his teammates better and can really help our guys with his ability to create shots for them. Union Career. (‘11-’12)...First season at Union. Before Union. Lane transferred to Union from Northern State (S.D.) University where he played one season of basketball. While at Northern State, Lane averaged 12 points, six assists and four rebounds per game. Lane spent his first two years of college at Santa Barbara (Calif.) City College where he averaged 20 points, six assists and five rebounds per game. he was named first team all-conference and was a listed among the top-100 JUCO players in California. Lane prepped at Cuyahogo Falls (Ohio) High School.
Leventrice Gray
6-7 • 210 lb. • Senior • Forward Hometown: Birmingham, Ala. Previous School: Jacksonville State Univ. Birthday: June 15
#22
Coach’s Comments. Boss is a former teammate of Antoine Hall. Boss has already shown leadership both on and off the floor this year. He is the best jumper on our team and maybe anywhere. I expect Boss to be a difficult match up for many post players because of his athleticism. He should be a guy we can count on to clean things up on the glass at both ends of the floor. Union Career. (‘11-’12)...First season at Union. Before Union. Gray transferred to Union from Jacksonville State (Ala.) University where he played one season. His first two seasons of college basketball were played at Gadsden State (Ala.) Community College. Gray averaged 12 points and six rebounds per game at Gadsden State. Gray prepped at Ramsay High School where he helped lead his team to the Alabama 5A State Title as a sophomore. He averaged 14 points and six rebounds in high school. He was the team leader in rebounds twice and top scorer as a senior. In track, Gray won the high jump and long jump.

Anthony Freeman, Jr. 6-8 • 215 lb. • Junior • Forward Hometown: Portland, Ore. Previous School: Chemketa CC Birthday: February 13
#15
Coach’s Comments. Anthony has been a great addition to our team this off season as we look to replace our entire front court. He runs like a deer and will give other post players problems with his speed in transition. Anthony also has great vision for a big man. He passes as well as any post I have coached. He will be another guy that creates offense for his teammates with his ability to pass. Union Career. (‘11-’12)...First season at Union. Before Union. Freeman transferred to Union from Chemeketa (Ore.) Community College where he played two seasons. He helped lead his team to the 2010 league title at Chemeketa while being named second team All-NWAAC. In his sophomore year at Chemeketa, Freeman scored 13.5 points and averaged 9.5 rebounds per game. Freeman prepped at Tualatin (Ore.) High School where he helped win back-toback league titles in 2008 and 2009. Freeman was named second team all-league, McDonald’s All-American Nominee and was named to the Oregon second team all-defense.
Dani marti
6-8 • 200 lb. • Junior • Forward Hometown: Valencia, Spain Previous School: Univ. of Rio Grande Birthday: October 20
#34
Coach’s Comments. Dani brings another element to our front court that is a good compliment to our team. He gives us a player at the 4 with the skills of a perimeter player. Dani is a smart player that handles the ball, passes, and shoots better than most players at his position. Dani is also a sneaky athlete with the ability to finish well at the rim. Union Career. (‘11-’12)...First season at Union. Before Union. Marti transferred to Union from the University of Rio Grande (Ohio) where he played two seasons. He averaged 8.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Marti shot 44% from the field and 42 percent from behind the arc.

Coach’s Comments. AJ is a really good wing for our team because of his versatility. He is one of the better passers on our team but his greatest strength is his ability to get to the basket. AJ also uses his length and athleticism and is one of the best perimeter defenders we have. He has the ability to change the game at both ends of the floor. Union Career. (‘11-’12)...First season at Union. Before Union. Roberts transferred to Union from Niagra County (N.Y.) Community College where he played two seasons of basketball. He was named third team all-region as a freshman and first team all-region as a sophomore in junior college. Roberts earned the Team MVP award both seasons. In junior college, he averaged 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three blocks per game. Roberts prepped at Niagara Catholic (N.Y.) High School where he played basketball and football. He led his basketball team to the 2005 and 2007 MMCC Title, along with a Catholic State runner-up in 2007. In high school basketball, Roberts earned first team all-Catholic, defensive MVP, team MVP twice, and team captain three times. His football honors included first team all-Catholic, team MVP, captain and first team all-state.
Giosha koguashvili

Coach’s Comments. Gio comes in as a freshman with the ability to make an immediate impact on our program. He is a strong guard with a number of skills that make us better. Gio defends well both on and off the ball. At the offensive end, he can shoot it well but is another guy with really good vision when he puts it on the floor. Gio can finish at the basket for himself but also is quite adept at creating shots for his teammates. Union Career. (‘11-’12)...First season at Union. Before Union. Koguashvili prepped at Hamilton Heights (Tenn.) Christian Academy where he played basketball. He averaged 17.9 points and grabbed 5.4 rebounds per game. He also helped his U17 club team to a national championship in 2009. Koguashvili was named the Most Talented Player in 2009.

Coach’s Comments. Pedro comes in as a point guard but may also have the chance to play some as a shooting guard as well. The most difficult position for a freshman to grasp is that of a point guard. Fortunately, Pedro shoots it well enough that he will have some opportunities to help us in other areas as he develops that part of his game. Pedro also has very good quickness which translates to very good on the ball defense. Union Career. (‘11-’12)...First season at Union. Before Union. Faller prepped at Hamilton Heights (Tenn.) Christian Academy where he played two years of basketball. He led the team with 18.1 points per game. Faller also grabbed 6.2 rebounds per game and dished out 6.0 assists per game.
Will Duncan
#24
6-2 • 175 lb. • Freshman • Guard Hometown: Tuscaloosa, Ala. Previous School: Duncan Christian Academy Birthday: September 10
Coach’s Comments. Will joins our team as a walk-on from Alabama. He brings energy and enthusiasm to practices every day. Will exemplifies a team first attitude every day as he works very hard to make his teammates better. Will plays defense hard and shoots the ball from the perimeter with good consistency. Will has the attitude necessary to help make his teammates better. Union Career. (‘11-’12)...First season at Union. Before Union. Duncan played his high school basketball for the Tuscaloosa Warriors. He helped lead his team to the ACSC regular season title in 2010. Duncan was named team captain three times while earning all-conference honors three times. As a senior, Duncan averaged 22.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.1 steals per game. He posted career highs of 35 points and 13 rebounds while producing 14 career double-doubles. Coach’s Comments. Eric joins our team as a walk-on that has already made tremendous progress during our preseason practices. He has good hands and feet which are paramount to being a good post player. He has proven that he can catch some tough passes and finishes well around the basket. As he continues to add strength and experience Eric has a chance to be a very good player for us. Union Career. (‘11-’12)...First season at Union. Before Union. Leisey prepped at Warwick (Pa.) High School where he played four seasons of basketball. He was selected co-captain as a senior, while also being named to the Lancaster-Lebanon first team All-Defense. Leisey averaged eight points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots per game. Off the court, Leisey was named to the distinguished honor roll in each of his four years of high school.
Paul Valdor
6-8 • 220 lb. • Freshman • Forward Hometown: Cap Haitien, Haiti Previous School: Notre Dame HS Birthday: August 28

Coach’s Comments. Paul has made vast improvements in his game coming off a red-shirt season last year. Paul continues to improve his post game and is developing the ability to score around the basket. Paul’s best attribute is that he can really stretch the defense. Paul is a big guy that can cause some match-up problems because he can really shoot it from anywhere. Union Career. (‘10-’11)...first season at Union (red-shirt). Before Union. About the NAIA
The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participation in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process. The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conferences and Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association. The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa.
Advancing sport with innovative change
The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports. Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation (www.championsofcharacter.org). Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
