Greetings from your Bluewater Angus Board!
A warm welcome to your 76th annual Bluewater Angus Club sale, Canada’s longest running Angus sale.
Building upon the success and acceptance of last years board managed sale, we endeavour to continually strive to better serve you, our membership.
Our sale is the major fundraiser for the club. Funds raised go towards supporting junior member and 4H initiatives. As always the success of the club relies on volunteers. If any of you are interested in volunteering time to one of our projects please speak to any board members. Whether it be the sale or the show in Barrie, any help is appreciated.
Once again the sale committee is proud to partner with WES for Youth on a donation heifer. Supporting youth mental health is more important then ever and we feel this is very much a worthy cause for the club to support.
We sincerely thank you for your continued interest and support of our sale.
Your Bluewater Board of Directors

312L has truly been something special, from the moment she was born. A moderate heifer, yet extremely complete, she is wide from hooks to pins with a deep flanked, barrel middle. She’s got a clean front third and a perfect Angus head. DBLL 312L’s granddam is working for Painter Family Ranch. Fer great grand dam has what we think is the most exciting heifer calf by SAV President, a cornerstone to come in our program. DBLL 312L is sired by SAV Renovation 6822, the female maker, an exceptional epd graph along with the best disposition. She sells halter broke, and walks with stye. When the smoke clears sale day someone is going to have a nice female who will show with the best of them, and then go on to be a Front pasture cow. We think this Heifer is one of the best we have ever raised.

23L could have one of the more unique pedigrees selling this fall run. Sired by another homeraised bull, Hillbrook Bandolier 8H. 8H is a Descendant of Camilla Bandolier 84G and Double AA Annie K 203’06. Two of the most prolific animals in straight Canadian angus. Add in a shot of Bonnie Chance Bardolene 10A and you’ve got a treasure trove of genetics on the top side. Her dam, 10G, was an embryo calf out of Glen Islay Annie K 72T and Double AA Bardolier 119U. 72T was a powerful cow, exuding everything we aimed to build here at Hillbrook. 119U was a fantastic breeding bull who worked at Glen Islay for several years before moving onto the herd of Ernest Mutch in PEI. 23G is long spinned, thick topped and correct. She moves like a kitten and checks all the boxes we look for in a breeding quality heifer. Add in her outcross Canadian pedigree and you’ve got a good one here. Sells vaccinated with Bovi-Shield and open.

Another great daughter of our home bred bull, Hillbrook Bardolier 9H, he continues to make them stylish, correct and feminine in one tidy package. 6L shows all the traits we like to see in a heifer before she hits the replacement pen. We have no doubt that 2L will follow in the family’s footsteps. 2L is an Spring Grove Overhaul heifer that is built to last. We retained her heifer from last year for our program and she has grown into a strong, powerful yearling. 02L aspires the same qualities. You can appreciate her for her moderate structure, femininity, and sound disposition. This heifer is easy moving and pertains the qualities that you know will make a long-lasting female. 2K is one of our Kozi/Net Worth heifers we retain every year. They are all sound, docile and calve no problem. These females have great udders and produce a very nice calf. The dam is from a Mel-Mac/BC Lookout cow. Exposed since June 10th to our new Sandy Bar Black Cat 30K from Saskatchewan. 30K’s mother is a daughter of SAV Resource. One of the very best cows at the large Sandy Bar Ranch in SK. Sells vaccinated to Bova Shield and will be preg checked safe.

Clear Brook Lady McHenry 1K has a heavily stacked pedigree with sires like Charlo, Rainfall and 5T Power Chip. 1K is a moderate framed heifer who bears significant resemblance to her dam. 1K was the first calf from our Rail Line Lady McHenry 2H cow purchased from the In it to Win it Sale. Her dam is easy keeping, quiet and is sound to the ground - a front pasture kind of cow. 1K was used by our daughter Riley as a 4-H projecther quiet temperament made her a great show project. 1K was AI bred to Growth Fund on April 5, pasture exposed to Clear Brook Commander 3K from May 1 until June 30. Vet check favors AI date.

She is sired by a son of our foundation donor, Emblynette 107, and her dam goes back to the Blackap May family on the top side. Perhaps the most exciting thing here is the pregnancy she is carrying. This is a bred heifer that 100% exemplifies our breeding program built on fertility and longevity. Her genomic enhanced EPDs show her in the top 15% for 11 different traits. With her breed average calving ease, incredible growth, docility, heifer pregnancy and carcass traits combined with breed average mature size, this heifer ticks all the boxes. The one index box she ticks that very few will is the CBI index in the very top of the 1%. The Combined Balanced Index combines the 15 most important indexes into one. Combining Growth, Maternal and Carcass traits with genomics gives a more clear picture of where she will end up.
Originating from our Headliner family, her dam is carrying her 11th calf, her granddam had 10 calves and her Traveller 71 third dam had 11 calves, all having never seen a cleanup bull or a hoof trimmer. Parent verified and genomic enhanced.
Due January 23/24 to Connealy Craftsman. No cleanup bull.

Rob Roy Miss Fancy 1K is a well structured, clean fronted and feminine heifer with lots of potential in her future. She is sired by the Mich Wheatland Caliber bull that was campaigned by Premier Livestock and was a multi time champion in the show ring and produces high quality calves in the sales ring. Her dam was purchased through the Extravaganza sale and also has some very recognizable genetics in her pedigree. Miss Fancy has a quiet disposition and will make a great addition to any cow/calf operation.

We have selected two commercial heifers out of our replacement pen that will fit well into anyone’s herd and breeding program. Mothering ability is very high on our priority list of requirements for our females. These heifers should have no problems in this area. The other requirement that we strive in our breeding program is carcass traits. Each heifer has at least five generations of carcass bulls in their lineage. These heifers walk on an exceptional set of feet and legs that help ensure maintenance free cattle for years to come. Both heifers are sired by a Ellingson Homegrown bull we raised and have sold to a neighbouring Angus breeder. 4K and 5K are medium framed and are bred to our Ten Speed bull, for a easy calving mid April calf.
Double vaccinated with Pyramid 10, Covexin and single vaccination to Scour Boss 9 and Ivomec
Welcome from Glen Islay.
The Glen Islay “Heart of the Herd Sale” , where we will sell all of our cows from 3 to 6 years old, is our way of reducing our cow numbers, and not being accused of just culling the herd. We will still have a handful of old cows, 6 two year olds , and a few bred heifers.
We have enjoyed some success in the Angus business, with bulls topping test stations years ago for rate of gain. We bred 11 either grand or reserve grand champions at the Royal Winter Fair in 9 years. We also bred the only bull that was grand champion at both the Royal and the Agribition [Glen Islay Blue Label], and many other division winners along the way. Our cattle have topped many sales, and we have been fortunate to have sold bulls to nine provinces in Canada. We have also exported our cattle to eleven other countries. Glen Islay Niagara was chosen supreme champion bull at the North Coast National Show in Australia, Glen Islay Masterpiece was chosen supreme champion at the Royal Show in England, and Glen Islay Charter was chosen supreme champion at the national show in Mexico.
Breeding good cattle is an art, not just a formula of numbers. Understanding that nature does not tolerate extremes, we have continually improved the balance of our herd, and the cows we are selling are the result of that selection process. Since 2008 we have genomically tested all of our calves for tenderness. I believe this trait will become more important in the industry as the cost of beef goes up and the consumers become more discriminating. Every taste test conducted, rates tenderness as the most important trait, even more than marbling, and those two traits are only 15% related. This really is the most predominant set of cows we have bred so far. Our straight Canadian, Glen Islay genetics are an outcross to mainstream modern Angus genetics, and as a very prominent angus breeder from Alberta stated on a visit in 2021 “ these cows bred to the popular mainstream angus bulls would be a genetic explosion ”. We genuinely appreciate the interest and sales of our cattle to Western and Eastern Canada, and with trucking getting so expensive, for this Heart of the Herd sale we will pay half the cost of transportation to central points for cattle selling outside of Ontario.
We have consigned to this Blue Water Sale for well over 50 years , and very much appreciate the work of the sale committee that maintains the reputation of good cattle, good value, and integrity that has been the hallmark of this longest continuous annual sale in Canada for 76 years.
We hope to see you at the sale, and of course if you have any questions about our cattle, be sure to call, or better yet, we welcome your visit before the sale.
Sincerely,
Don & JeannetteTenderness – 6

Here is the last of my 44Y daughters, and a great bull producing cow. Her first calf was Glen Islay Blacklock 23G, that we used in our own herd for two years in our heifer pen, then he worked for Pete Van Stavern, and now is our main herd sire in our Manitoulin herd. Her next bull works for Vince Arnold, and her bull last year was described as the best bull in a really good pen of bulls, now owned by Fleury Cattle Co. in Saskatchewan. She has a fancy heifer calf this year that I will definitely be retaining. Her mother, old 13X, is still going strong and is unquestionably one of the best cows that I have ever owned. Including this year’s bull calf we will use three direct sons and two grandsons. The sister to this 2E cow that topped the sale last year at $22,000 had such an outstanding bull calf by Angus Acres Bandy 96X for Z Bar Angus and Hillbrook Angus that I bred this cow the same way. Bred April 13 to Angus Acres Bandy 96X.

What a powerful Old Post daughter we have here in 16E. She would be our show cow if we were still showing, and her production record has been phenomenal. I had not flushed a cow for 20 years but I did flush this cow in 2021, so that is how much I think of her. Our best yearling heifers are sired by her son, Glen Islay Headline 24H, who is also leaving outstanding progeny at Martin Farms on Manitoulin Island. Her daughter sold last year in this sale to Bronyx Angus in Saskatchewan for $10,100. Her bull calf this year will probably have our highest weaning weight, and will be a highlight of our bull pen next year. This Lena cow family originated from my choice of all the cows in the historic Ronan herd in Alberta, and they have consistently produced some of our highest performing cattle. The mother of this cow, 52A has a maternal brother to 16E working for Glennie Bros herd in Saskatchewan, and Wes Glennie is very impressed with his calves, and particularly his fleshing ability. I bred this cow to the great breeding bull at Sealing Creek Ranch in B.C. before I decided to sell this group of cows, hoping for a heifer calf. It will be a valuable coupon for you.

I purchased Bonnie Chance Bardolene 10A in 1972, and am still using him. Good cattle never change, because nature does not tolerate extreme trait selection for growth, milk, muscle, marbling, or any other trait. Despite the influence of academics, breed associations, and breeders themselves to change the breed by recommended selection methods, change is not necessarily improvement. A really good cow in the 60’s, the 70’s the 80’s or 2000’s never changes because they follow a phenotypic pattern, even though they come in different sizes. This Bar Doll family came from Saskalta Ranch in Saskatchewan, and are noted for excellent feet, and added performance in our herd. This cow is very attractive, and like her mother she has worked well for me. 15F’s first calf, Glen Islay Chance 29H, is the herd sire for Garth Klein at Rock Creek B.C., and her daughters are working for Darren Hargrave and new breeders N7 cattle Co. Double AA Old Post has done us a world of good. The bulls are good footed, big nutted, with excellent growth and temperament. His daughters are also very fertile, good footed, plenty of growth, and excellent temperament. This 22F cow is one of his biggest, but very easy fleshing. One of her daughters was our high selling calf in the Blue Water sale to Bronyx Angus. Her bull calves have sold to Ethan Orr, and long time customer Rick McKay. Her heifer calf this year is one of our very best. I bred a lot of the keeper cows this year to a yearling son of the 12G cow in this sale Glen Islay Tenderline 3K. He is a strong footed attractive bull that I am very excited about as he is also a 10 for tenderness.

This is the only daughter of Glen Islay Chance 12Z in the sale. He was an outstanding bull with great feet and heifer friendly. We sold semen from him to Australia and USA, and I still recommend him for heifers. The dam of this 25F cow now owned by Southgate Angus was one of two daughters I had by Blind Creek Lad 25H. He was called the old fixer by his owner Eldon Smith as he improved feet, udders, temperament, and all the basics we look for. I like to line breed my top females, and this cow is line bred to Pride 1M, one of the most influential cows in the herd of all time. I am keeping 6 two year olds and maybe the best one is out of this cow. The service sire here is Glen Islay Trooper 31J , that is a direct son of old Bonnie Chance 10A from 1969. I recently sold Trooper 31J to the 850 head cow herd of Darwin Gork in Manitoba. We have the first set of calves from Trooper on the ground, and plan to use him by A.I. a lot in the future. Here is the first of three daughters of Headliner 12E, and what a job he has done for us and for Fleury Cattle co in Saskatchewan. He sired the largest sire group in Fleury’s bull sale , and averaged right at $8500. This Magic cow family produced 2 Royal Winter Fair grand champions for us and the dam of this lot, Magic 17Z has been one of the best producers. 17Z is the mother of the great breeding Marshall bull at Len Mar farms, as well as herd sires for Darren Hargrave, and Vince Arnold. The grand sire of Magic 17Z is Glen Islay Blue Label, the only bull to be grand champion at both the Royal and the Agribition. Magic 6G is a good looking, long bodied cow, and is raising one of the best Trooper heifer calves on the farm, so I bred her back the same way. Her bull last year was a top performer but got injured before being sold. This cow will pay her way where ever she goes. Bred 16 May to Glen Islay Trooper 31J.

This is a very attractive young cow, with a great heritage behind her. It is not surprising that Headliner is working so well, considering his sire Remington Heads Up 44Y, owned by the Gray’s in the powerful Z Bar Ranch herd in Saskatchewan, was one of the best bulls I have ever seen. He also sired our top selling cow at $22000 last year and the 2E cow in this sale. I am truly thankful that Dave and Carol Gray sold me a few doses of semen on 44Y. Like the last lot, 6G cow, this cow is from our precious Magic family that originated with the purchase of Magic of Coalbridge 22F in 1974. She was a full sister to a great breeding bull Coalbridge Marshall 15. This family also produced Glen Islay Mr. Magic at $20,000, Glen Islay Permit at $18,000 and Grand Son of Snako at $10,000 as well as the two Royal Winter Fair grand champion females. The first daughter of 10G is at N7 Cattle Co. and her heifer this year is a keeper. Note that Magic 17Z is also the dam of the previous lot 6G cow.

This young Headliner daughter has already produced a herd sire for us in Glen Islay Tenderline 3K. I am very optimistic about his future and have used him a lot. Maggie 12G is also a maternal sister to our other herd bull Glen Islay Trooper 31J that recently sold to the large herd of Darwin Gork in Manitoba. Maggie 76A was born in our Manitoulin herd, and is a never miss producer. Her first son sold to Darren Hargrave, and her daughters have all been at the top of their group, including Glen Islay Maggie 23F that topped the Blue Water sale at $6400. We have had a lot of success with Double AA Bardolier 119U but probably 76A is his very best daughter. This 12G cow is one I will miss, but her mother, her two sisters, her two daughters, her brother and her son will contribute to our smaller herd. I am so impressed with her son Tenderline 3K, sired by Summit 11E that I bred her back the same way.

Another attractive , moderate frame, hard working daughter of the foundation sire Bonnie Chance Bardolene 10A. Typical of the Bonnie Chance daughters, she has a tidy udder, is good footed, and will last for a long time. The dam of this lot Maggie 47X was our most attractive daughter of Old Post, and produced admirably, with sons sold to Earle Foster in Manitoba and James Worth in P.E.I. She had a perfect udder and would have been a very competitive show cow in her day. Semen on Bonnie Chance Bardolene 10A is getting very scarce, and there will not be many more chances to get a direct daughter of one of the very best and most consistent breeding bulls that I have ever used. The yearling heifer out of this cow is one of the top six that we have retained, and her heifer calf this year is also a keeper. Bred 5 April to Glen Islay Tenderline 3K.

I am fairly sure that this is one of only two living daughters of the legendary Camilla Chance 37T [born in 1963], better known as Canadian Colossal. The other daughter is at Bronyx Angus in Saskatchewan. He was the most popular bull in North America with over 600 head registered in Canada and thousands in U.S.A. He was a 2600 lb. bull that changed the breed from the belt buckle size angus cattle to the more efficient cattle we have today. Like most Colossal daughters, this cow is long bodied, stout made, with excellent feet. She is a maternal sister to the 15F cow in this sale, both out of the really powerful Old Post daughter, 38X. This 18G cow is raising a very good bull calf by Wandering Creek Dynasty, but I believe her mating to Bonnie Chance Bardolene 10A will be very special. This cow is an example that really good cattle never change.

This cow does not sport a straight Canadian pedigree, but she excels in tenderness and production. Coming from our herd on Manitoulin Island she is the problem-free kind. Her grand mother was the top selling calf from the high performance Prairielane herd in Manitoba. The sire of this cow is a paternal brother to Glen Islay Headliner 12E at Fleury Ranch. We used 3E for three years on the herd on Manitoulin and he now works for Pete Van Stavern. I have had tough luck with her bull calves through no fault of her own, as one got caught in a feeder and the other one punctured his foot. 43G has a very promising heifer calf on her this year. Note that Glen Islay Blue Label is the only bull that has ever been Grand Champion at both the Royal and the Agribition. Note also that a tenderness score of 10 is the highest you can get and only about 1% of the Angus breed will achieve a 10. “Tenderness is the major industry issue with one in five steaks considered tough” according to OMAFRA beef web January 2023. The service sire here is a 10 as well.

The mother of this 2H cow is also a big powerful cow that has been a good bull producer. The Summit 11E bull sold to the Gray’s at Z Bar Ranch in Saskatchewan, and he has done a great job for us, including being the sire of our herd bull Glen Islay Tenderline 3K. I plan to use Summit 11E more in the future. We sold semen on Rocky 8Z to Australia, and he has proven to be a high performance sire. The influence of Old Post on our Pride females has been a tremendous asset. The sire of this lot was on display at the World Forum and is best known as the sire of Remington Heads Up 44Y, that I have said many times is one of the very best bulls that I have ever seen. 44Y did us a world of good through his sons and daughters, like Headliner 12E, the Pride 10E cow that sold for $22,000 and the 2E cow in this sale. This was a last minute decision prompted by President Cam Hill to sell these embryos. The Pride 31A cow is a favorite of all visitors. Roy Bjorkland stated “ that is exactly what an Angus cow should look like” while looking at 31A and her calf 16J. At 10 years old she is youthful, good uddered, and sound. She is a full sister in blood to the powerful Glen Islay 12N, that has left a strong influence in many herds. A full brother to these embryos is Glen Islay Heads Up 10F that is very impressive, and is leaving such outstanding progeny at Calvin Martin’s Southgate Angus, that we recently collected him and will be using him in our herd. I also have a full sister to these embryos Glen Islay Pride 16J, that is one of our top two year olds. Because of the success of both JPC 10F and JPC 16J, that is why I flushed 31A to Angus Acres Heads Up 137R. This mating is proven to work.
