NEW ERA DINING

PORTLAND, OREGON
Freeman’s Southern heritage, while Soda Club specializes in vegan Italian fare.
Toronto
Lucy Waverman, Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef, cookbook author and columnist for The Globe and Mail, Canada’s national newspaper, states, “Vegetarian and vegan dishes have always been available in Toronto because of its incredible ethnic diversity.” In addition to the city’s underthe-radar Indian, Israeli and Egyptian eateries, the food writer reports the presence of sophisticated, high-end vegan or veggie-friendly restaurants, including Planta, whose three locations feature elegantly modern spaces, and Mexican-inspired Rosalinda. A taco tasting menu at La Bartola, another Latin-leaning establishment, includes tacos al pastor composed of jackfruit and mushrooms instead of pork. While not strictly vegetarian, chef and owner Julian Bentivegna presents an exquisite “vegetable-forward” menu at Ten.
“Portland has so, so many excellent vegetarian and vegan dining options, and they’re so diverse,” reports Liz Crain, prominent local journalist and author of Food Lover’s Guide to Portland. “We have everything from vegan Japanese comfort food and American barbecue restaurants, to spots serving vegan Sri Lankan, South
American and Vietnamese cuisine,” she adds, noting the presence of vegan scoop shops (e.g., Kate’s Ice Cream), even vegan doughnuts (e.g., Doe Donuts). “No more make-do meals of just a side salad plus a dry baked potato, that’s for sure,” says Crain. For starters, Dirty Lettuce presents meatless soul food and Boxcar Pizza offers plant-based Detroit-style pizzas.
Lisbon
Portugal is currently one of the hottest destinations in the world and, thanks to favorable residency programs, a favorite of restless American expats. Travel blogger and founder of the website Veggies Abroad, Rebecca Gade-Sawicki reports Lisbon offers plentiful vegan and vegetarian eateries. “As a city that has a love affair with seafood, Lisbon has become incredibly vegan-friendly over the past decade,” she says, noting that even some Portuguese favorites like pastel de nata (custard tart) have been veganized. Restaurants of note include The Green Affair, where the artfully plated dishes make guests forget they are eating vegan, and Organi Chiado, a charming establishment in a historic district.
With a large Indian-born community, and Islam being the prevailing religion in the United Arab Emirates, Dubai offers plentiful vegan dining opportunities. Folia, at the Four Seasons at Jumeirah Beach, is one of celebrity chef and author Matthew Kenney’s upscale plant-based restaurants. While on a rooftop 54 floors above street level at Address Sky View hotel is Cé La Vi, where dishes such as black truffle risotto with butternut squash or beet salad with avocado, red quinoa, mint and pistachios delight a trendy clientele. For lovers of exotic Pacific Rim cuisines, Tum Tum Asia presents interpretations of specialties from Japan, China, Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia—all 100 percent vegetarian.

Washington, D.C. is home to our most prominent political buildings and leadership, and has been the U.S. capital since 1790. Since then, it’s blossomed from a political hub into a bustling metropolis with a myriad of exciting attractions, and a great city to visit for a long weekend—or a more permanent stay.
Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices PenFed Realty’s Mike Aubrey says, “D.C. has a different dynamic than [other] major American cities, with the panache of New York or Chicago, but it’s small enough to maintain characteristics that have been around for a long time.” With his vast knowledge of the city, Aubrey curated his top picks for places to visit in D.C.
Stay
“You can’t go wrong with The Four Seasons in Georgetown,” says Aubrey. “It’s everything you’d expect from a Four Seasons multiplied by 100.” It’s also a favorite amongst the members of our Congress.
Secondly, the St. Regis hotel; a historic five-star hotel with a bird’s-eye vista of the White House. “When you think of the District of Columbia, you think of the government, and you really get a flavor of it from the St. Regis.”
