Raising Miss America
As the mother of Miss America I have to ask... how amazing does it feel to see your child succeed? It is beyond surreal. You raise your children to be smart, driven and successful~ but to actually witness a "dream come true" is an incredible feeling. At what age did Mallory decide she wanted to be a future Miss America? Well, at age 13 she started competing in the Miss Alabama's Outstanding Teen program (a feeder to Miss Alabama, Miss America)...she placed in the top 5 that first year- I think it hit her then, that this was a goal that she wanted to strive for. We all saw Mallory's amazing tap performance to "Get Up Off That Thing" by James Brown. We also know you are a dancer and own your own performing arts studio. What do you feel are/were the more important aspects of training for such a powerful competition? The most important thing for any dancer (to me) is to love what you do! at Make Your Move, we really focus on creating the most well-rounded dancers..... if you are not passionate about your art form, the audience will pick up on that. being able to connect with your audience and bring them into your performance is what makes it "stand out" from the competition.....with Mallory, I think that by showing her absolute joy when performing on stage is what gives her the competitive edge. Reality TV has focused intently the past few years on competition Mothers. From Toddlers and Tiaras to Dance Mom's we have all seen the "not so pretty side" of competing. What are your thoughts on the 4
I think that they really have a negative effect. it's sad that they even continue to exist. Miss America is about style, service, success and scholarships- toddlers and tiaras (to me) is just full of "sketchy" directors who are capitalizing on parents who keep believing that their child's success lies in a circuit pageant where they're rewarded for being superficially "beautiful"...if they would take that money and invest in real dance, voice or piano lessons and put the rest towards college, by the time the girls were ready to try for Miss America programs, they would have proper training in their art form that would bring out their character, self-esteem and work ethics to help prepare them for the "big picture". Mallory answered the question regarding Gun Control with such ease and confidence. Obviously she is very well rounded and educated. How important was education in her childhood? For example, what steps did you take to make sure she received her education and understood its importance? Education is very important in our family, but so is being well rounded. I feel like the more activities your child can be involved in during the school age years, the more prepared they will be when it comes time to make decisions or have opinions on various subjects. Mallory was very involved in school activities, i.e.: jr arts, cheerleading, dance line, drama club, show choir, yearbook staff, sga, etc. But grades had to be kept up in order for her to continue with her activities. time management is crucial in the middle and high school years- it really helps them prepare for college and the business world. We read that Mallory moved to NY with just $1000 in her pocket! Is that true? What was it like to watch her take in her Independence with such confidence and motivation? that is absolutely true. actually i think it was really like $987...well, after a year at Auburn she came to us and pleaded to go to NYC for one semester to "find herself"..she said she didn't want to continue in school without really knowing what she "wanted to be when she grew up" (she didn't want to "waste tuition money"). we had traveled to NYC every summer since she was 12 for dance classes, so i knew she was familiar with the "city" and such. we told her if she wanted to go she had to earn the money - she worked all summer, and had a yard sale, packed a huge suitcase and made arrangements to sleep on a "friend of a friend's couch" and she was off in mid October of 2008........seeing her leave was VERY scary and also very calming at the same time- i knew that she had what it took to take on the city and that she had enough common sense and drive to succeed.- but she is our only child- so it was very emotional for us too..... I mean, we raised her to live her dreams, and to go after what she wanted- so, she did just that! (and it felt good knowing she had the courage to go!) Looking back through this entire experience... what is the most memorable moment of the journey you took with Mallory to Miss America? oh, wow- the most memorable? I think it was right after she won Miss New York (it was her third and final try)- we went to her dressing room for her to freshen up before the gala, we were all alone, she turned to me- then she hugged me really tight and said "thank you mom, i love you"... "we did it!" ....I'm going to Miss America! Any advice for Parents raising that "future" Miss America? Yes! always be a parent first and a friend second.

Beauty Tips: by Sabrina SKIN CARE: 1. It is very important to get on a good cleansing routine for your face. It is also essential to learn what skin type you are: Dry, Oily, Combination (oily and dry), Normal, Normal to Oily, Normal to Dry, Acne prone 2. Once you learn your skin type, find a cleanser, toner, moisturizer that keeps your skin healthy and problem free. 3. Wash your face AT LEAST twice a day: in the morning and at night. IF YOU ARE OILY (like myself), you can wash your face a third time during the day (afternoon) MAKEUP: 1. Find your match! Test difference shades of foundation, powder, concealer, etc on the side of your neck right under your jaw line. That spot will get you a true color match. 2. DON'T CAKE IT ON and by that I mean do not put layers and layers of facial makeup on your face, you will clog your pores and create problems on your skin like blemishes. 3. Research what colors go well for different color eyes, skin colors, skin textures, etc. Not everyone can pull off blue eyeliner! For example, shades of lavender look well on Brown eyes and pink lipstick looks better on fair skin girls rather than bright red lipstick. MAINTENANCE: 1. Clean your makeup brushes AT LEAST once a week. A good makeup brush cleaner can be found at Ulta or Sally's Beauty Supply. Baby shampoo works fine too since it's gentle. If you have oily skin or have acne (like myself), clean your brushes every other day. That way excess oil or bacteria or makeup isn't sitting on the brushes over many nights. 2. DON'T BE AFRAID OF CHANGE: If your skin care isn't working for you, making your skin dryer, not clearing up blemishes, whatever the case, don't be afraid to try different products, HOWEVER, don't change up your routine TOO much, your skin will get confused and "freak out." 3. DRINK LOTS OF WATER: the more you hydrate, your skin will be brighter, clearer and over all healthier. Plus, water is good for you! Hope these tips help! It’s All About Megan! by Macspix & Megan Hamnett (aged 10 ½) Although it seems some while ago since we started 2013 I just want to wish everyone a Happy New Year and hope it is filled with many fun and exciting positive things! I first met Megan Hamnett a couple of years ago for a family shoot we did in the snow. We went back to her families house and I did a few solo shots of her and her two younger sisters Poppy & Willow. Megan made a good impression on me as she has long natural blonde hair and a really great smile ~ which seems to make her eyes smile too according to mum Sarah. We have done about 8 or 9 shoots together now and more planned this year as well. Most have been solo, however she has done two with Emma (another regular of mine who is a year younger) and a one with her sisters as well in early autumn on a day that felt and looked more like summer! So far she has been to a crematorium in the snow, an old unused church, some woods a field of yellow rape seed, some old warehouses, an old garage and a couple of inside shoots as well….what’s next with Megan? Well you are going to have to wait and find out, but as her confidence and ability progresses the shoots will be more adventurous. And even though she is now 10 and a half (half’s are all important as a child!) all the shoots with Megan are free of make up, high heels or pouting poses! Megan has such great natural beauty and a winning smile so why spoil that? Now you may recall Chloe & Kayleigh gracing the cover of Unique Child over the Christmas Holidays, well Megan is very good school friends with Chloe (in fact their birthdays are on consecutive days). Chloe has been boasting a little about her first magazine cover and so some jealousy is arising…hence I am dedicating my entire article to Megan to get some bragging rights of her own! I asked Megan to write a few lines of her own about photoshoots with me and how she enjoys them and below is what she wrote ~ this was unaided by her mum so her thoughts, all her words..i have corrected the spelling but left any grammar as she wrote it. Megan wrote : -
Dear Bruce, I have the privilege of being able to work with a very hard working man name Bruce. I love being able to work with Bruce, because he is a man who always makes me feel comfortable when I am modelling. It’s great working with Bruce cause he always comes up with brilliant but crazy ideas. He always gives me fun shoots and my favourite would be going to the beach with my sisters and getting to have them done with Poppy & Willow. He is a great photographer and I love doing it! I really want to become an actress now and when I get older so then I can get loads of money and help people less fortunate then me it would really make a difference to help change others life's so I would love to become an actress NOW AND WHEN IM OLDER! I hope if people like my photos they might want me to be on their program's. So enjoy her photos in this article ~ there are some we did especially for this article and a small selection of her past shoots to show her portfolio to date! Have fun and I look forward to my next article for Unique Modelling Magazine! Bruce ~ Macspix Photography Please see my facebook page Macspix Portraiture Gallery! 13

“Chloe in her own words” My name is Chloe, and I am 11 years old. I love modeling because it is exciting! Trying out different fashion styles is lots of fun and getting to express my personality through pictures is the best part. I have several fashion favorites. For cooler weather, I like to wear jeans or sweats with hoodies and boots. For warmer weather, I like to wear shorts with tank tops and flip flops. My favorite accessories are hair bows and scarves. My short term goals are to continue modeling, dancing competitively, tumbling, and performing in local musical theatre productions while maintaining straight A’s in school. My long term goals are to be a “triple threat” dancer/actress/ singer and a dance choreographer.

Carlie Carlie plans to finish high school with enough college credits to start as a sophomore. She wants to achieve a degree in either elementary education or become a Pediatrician. Carlie loves to dance more than anything! She is a member of the High School's Dance Line and the Track Team. I enjoy running with the track team at my school. Before graduation she looks forward to taking another trip to New York City. Family is most important in her life! Most of Carlie’s wardrobe is Pink with a mix of Animal Prints and Bling! Her favorite beauty products are mascara and lip gloss. Specifically Estee Lauder vibrating mascara because it causes her lashes look so big and fake! Another personal favorite is Maybelline's baby lips in tinted colors. It keeps the lips soft and colorful.
