Properties of crystal structures are dependent on their sizes, morphologies and facets. Thus, controlling crystal growth should play important roles in application areas. To precisely control crystal growth, growth mechanisms should be understood. We study classical and nonclassical crystal growth mechanisms. We are also keen to study composites of two (or more) different metal oxides (phases) because they can create greater flexibility on properties and multi-functionality and phase separation phenomena are also very interesting from a basic science point of view. Another research area that we are interested in is surface modifications of metal oxides which can effectively modulate properties of the metal oxides and generate new functionalities. We will develop such crystal growth and modification methods to create unprecedented metal oxide structures which can be applied to energy harvesting, light emitting, energy storage, data storage, water purification and other areas and used to study electrocatalysis, ferroelectricity, magnetism, magnetoelectric coupling effect, ionic conduction, etc.

UNIST-Helmholtz Juelich Center for Future Energy Solution

Two emerging keywords in ceramic community are sustainability and tailored functionality for advanced applications. This high-efficientoriented and eco-friendly approach are to respond properly to the environmental regulations getting tougher and tougher. One of the biggest challenges on this quest lies in the fact that most useful ceramic materials contain nominally toxic elements that should be eventually removed. Our goal is to best-tailor the functionality of ceramic materials to meet the requirements for practical applications in accordance with the environmental appropriateness.

Our lab seeks to understand the collective dynamics of functional particles due to induced or local interactions and utilize them to discover new engineering principles in developing intelligent soft material systems. A collection of particles spontaneously arrange themselves as a coherent super-structure, which sometimes displays emergent characteristics. Therefore, I will seek to identify key ingredients for selfassembly as a set of responsive building blocks, energy, and interactions. I will consider these ingredients as a methodology that promotes technological initiatives including smart manufacturing and functional diversification of programmable matter at nearly every scale.

Experiments and computer modeling have been used for characterizing the microstructures of materials to study their relationship to desired properties and to optimize the materials design and performance. In nature, many problems related to the material properties are threedimensional because most practical materials have a polycrystalline or multi-phase structure with complexity in spatial arrangements of the microstructural unit, and are subject to various processes. Therefore, it is of interest to characterize microstructural parameters and reveal their effects on the properties of materials in all three dimensions. Learning subjects involved in Engineering courses and also related to fundamental courses would be good to study MSE major courses. Especially, learning basic concepts of General physics, General Chemistry, and Calculus etc. are important. However, you can simply overcome lack of basic knowledge if you keep up with MSE Curriculum. And to become a fabulous Materials Science engineer working for the prosperity of humankind, basic physical fitness and sophisticated knowledge is essential.

For juniors preparing for graduation

For juniors preparing for graduation
