Life on campus From our biggest campus in Mt Albert to the Northern campus in Albany, Unitec’s three campuses are all quite different. The Mt Albert campus is green and spacious, with lots of carparking, sports facilities and cafes to catch up with friends. It’s just 10 minutes drive to the city, and a short walk to the nearest bus stop and train station. Out west, there’s Waitakere with its modern teaching facilities, right at the heart of Henderson. Our Northern campus in Albany is easy to reach from all parts of the North Shore and the northwest. All our campuses are 100% smokefree and they’re constantly buzzing with students of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds. There’s always something going on too – from social events on campus to action-packed trips out of Auckland with the Experience NZ programme.

The year starts with the biggest student orientation event in the country and finishes with the massive End of Year Party, with concerts, film nights, gaming events, sporting events, BBQs, parties, comedy nights and Kids’ Days Out in between. You can join one of the many clubs or societies at Unitec or even start your own one. And if you’re after some culture, there are regular plays and dance performances by performing arts students, as well as design and visual arts exhibitions at the Mt Albert campus galleries.

IBM and Concentrix Delivery Centre Both IBM and Concentrix have established delivery centres at Unitec’s Mt Albert campus. Unitec students and graduates can apply for part-time work in a variety of technical or administrative positions at the centres. It’s an excellent opportunity to gain work experience with two multi-national companies while learning valuable business and industry skills and it will complement any discipline of study at Unitec. Sport and fitness The Sports Centre offers excellent training facilities for all ages and fitness levels. You can play squash at the National Squash Centre, choose a yoga or Pilates fitness class or use the weight room and cardio area. Concession and discount cards are available to students.

EdCollective also runs the ‘Experience NZ programme’ for Unitec students http://www.usu.co.nz/experiencenewzealand which includes activities such as skiing down a volcano, jumping out of a plane, exploring the underwater world of the Pacific Ocean, relaxing under a heated waterfall in the forest, road tripping around the North Island, or chilling on a boat surrounded by 144 islands. Off campus

Unitec offers a range of accommodation from studios to five-bedroom apartments, which are all self-catered. Each apartment (except for the studio) has a separate bedroom, lounge, bathroom (or two) and a well-equipped kitchen. Your furnished bedroom has a comfortable bed, some storage, space to study and a connection for a phone and computer (please note that if you require a fast broadband connection, then that is your responsibility). There is parking available and also an on-site laundry. You can choose to stay for a semester or a year.

Stay with a homestay family All homestay students have their own room and are provided with two meals a day during the week and three meals a day at the weekends. The cost is NZD 270 per week, plus a placement fee of NZD 250 and an airport pick-up fee of NZD 80.

Unitec Residential Village on campus This 134-bed apartment complex offers a mix of living options (listed below). Some houses, flats or apartments will not be furnished so you may need to purchase household items when you first move in. There is a huge variety of accommodation available and to secure this, you need to view the property and meet with the landlord to formally sign the tenancy agreement, so please do arrive in Auckland early! Unitec offers a wide range of programmes, from certificates to doctoral degrees. A doctorate is the highest level of study in New Zealand (level 10), while certificates usually start a level 3. If you’re studying for a bachelors degree you would normally take courses at levels 5 to 7. The levels here represent the level at which the study is completed – eg a bachelors degree is level 7, diplomas are either level 5 or level 6. “I originally wanted to be a dancer, but injuries prevented this. The many x-rays, MRI scans, nuclear medicine scans and ultrasound scans I had along the way unlocked a new interest in radiology. The medical imaging programme at Unitec is a mixture of theory and practice. It’s hard work – you often spend your holidays in clinical placements - but the small classes allow you to build strong relationships with your classmates and tutors. A proud moment for me was receiving the Unitec Senior Scholar Award at graduation, which shows that hard work does pay off! My qualification is 100%

relevant to my job now. Having a clinical placement at Middlemore Hospital really helped me as I was exposed to working life as a radiographer from day one. I love that no day is ever the same. Radiation technologists work all over the hospital (general, emergency, superclinic, theatre, screening), and I really enjoy this fast-paced environment. I don’t know yet where my future will take me but there are so many opportunities with a medical imaging degree. I could do postgraduate study in mammography, ultrasound, MRI or nuclear medicine, or I could even travel abroad with my degree.”

Can I copy the SOP or ask someone else to write it for me? No - it is very important that you write your own statement. Do not ask a friend, agent, or family member to do it for you, and please do not copy paragraphs from Unitec or other websites. We want to know why you want to study with us, and only you can tell us this.

Why do I have to write an SOP? Mainly to help Unitec understand why you are applying for the programme you selected, and whether it is likely to meet your needs. The SOP does not affect whether you meet the general entry requirements.

Guidelines for Credit recognition/ Cross-credits As per the Unitec Academic Statute, “cross-credit” means the award of credit in recognition of successful equivalent study at the same or higher level, in the context of another programme and in accordance with the institution’s policy on credit recognition. Cross-credits awarded do not usually exceed 50% of the Unitec programme, and may be less. All cross-credits granted are provisional until approved by the Programme Committee. The student will be formally advised of the Programme Committee’s decision in writing. Cross-credits are only applicable to the programme for which they are approved; they cannot be reassigned to another programme. The information on this form and on any attachments will be covered by the NZ Privacy Act 1993 and by Unitec’s Privacy of Information policy.
