Programme overview
• 16-week full-time programme: speed your way into the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Civil, Electrical or Electronic)* or the Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Civil or Electrical). *Cross-credits into these programmes: this means you’ll need to gain fewer credits to gain the higher qualification.
This programme is ideal for you if you want to go on to Unitec’s New Zealand Diploma in Engineering or the Bachelor of Engineering Technology – but don’t quite meet the admission requirements.
• Gain the fundamental physics, algebra, literacy and engineering knowledge for entry into higher-level engineering programmes. • Tailored for Unitec’s engineering degree and diploma programmes meaning it’ll prepare you for the programme that you want to enter. • As a student in this programme, you’ll be part of an engineering student body - learning alongside other aspiring engineers. • A mix of classroom sessions, practical activities, guest speakers, discussions, presentations and online learning. • A chance to engage with Unitec’s marae, a great setting to explore mātauranga Māori and the role of culture in communication.
Admission requirements For this programme, you’ll need:
Academic 1. Four years’ secondary education 2. To be 16 years old by the time the programme starts 3. 40 credits at NCEA Level 2 from four subjects including: • 12 credits or more in Mathematics, preferably achievement standards in algebra, calculus or trigonometry 4. 10 credits at NCEA level 1 or above in English
English Applicants will need one or more of the following: • 12 credits at NCEA Level 1 or above in English • The New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Applied) (Level 3) • Provide evidence that you satisfy our criteria for existing English proficiency, such as IELTS • Achieved at least one English proficiency outcome in the last two years If you don’t meet the English criteria above, we have a range of English Language programmes available. Other options If you don’t meet these requirements, you’ll need one of the following: • A relevant qualification at Level 3 or above on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework or equivalent • Equivalent credits from appropriate trades training and/or demonstrate skills and experience • A B- average or above in the New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 3) Engineering pathway (FSTU 3926 Identity and Communication, FSTU 3922 Physics, FSTU3914 Maths Algebra, FSTU3912 Intro to Algebra) • Attend a Skills Review session where your literacy and numeracy levels will be assessed.
