This pre-apprenticeship certificate is your starting point to a career as a registered electrician or to begin your training in electrical engineering.

Programme overview

This programme is the first step in electrical training before you enter an apprenticeship arrangement with an employer.

You’ll learn and develop the following competencies:

• Fault diagnosis and testing techniques • Safe practices • Electrical legislation • Installation and maintenance of electrical machines and electrical equipment in special electrical situations • Communicating with stakeholders on electrical and related matters

When you graduate, in the context of the wider electrical industry and under supervision in a controlled environment, you’ll be able to work as an electrical apprentice. You’ll also be able to pathway into further education in electrical or electronics engineering.

Admission requirements

For this programme, you’ll need:

Academic

1. NCEA Level 1 in mathematics, English, and physics or general science 2. Three years’ secondary education 3. Be 16 years old by the time the programme starts

English

If English is not your first language, you’ll need one or more of the following:

• Achieved NCEA Level 3 and New Zealand

University Entrance

• Provide evidence you satisfy our criteria for existing English proficiency such as

IELTS • Achieved at least one English proficiency outcome in the last two years

Other options

If you don’t meet these requirements, you’ll need one of the following:

• A relevant qualification at Level 2 or above on the NZQF or equivalent • Evidence you’re eligible for special or discretionary admission
