The most powerful way you can impact your community and improve the lives of your neighbors is by giving to United Way’s Community Investment Fund. These dollars are invested in the areas of Education, Income and Health and produce measurable results (see page 43). In 2011-2012, 71,000 people’s lives were improved right here in Asheville and Buncombe County. More than 95% of employee giving at Galaxy Digital and ISA was directed to United Way’s Community Investment Fund in 2012. These companies may work in different markets, but their employees come together to make their community a better place by supporting the Community Investment Fund.

LIVE UNITED We’ve undergone quite a transformation at United Way with our move to LIVE UNITED. It’s a transformation we believe is absolutely essential to meet the challenges we all face in this community. Yet, at our core, who we are and what we believe in has not changed since our founding: We exist to improve people’s lives. We exist to try to find solutions to social and community problems that you can only overcome together. How we go about that work has evolved with time, just as the economic, political and social environments we work within have evolved. From our early days as a fundraising federation to our current role as a community leader around collective impact, our approaches have changed, but our

core business remains the same. As Givers, Advocates and Volunteers, we support United Way because we want to make things better. We all want to do our part to make our communities stronger and to help society progress. That’s the idea behind Advancing the Common Good: creating opportunities for everyone to have a better life - everyone - by focusing on Education, Income and Health, the building blocks of a good life. The only way Advancing the Common Good works, and the only way our investments will produce results, is for us to believe in the potential of every human being. We believe all students can learn. We believe all families can build financial stability. We believe all

people can improve their health and well-being. Again this year, we represent our brand with people from different backgrounds and perspectives uniting through United Way to make a difference. What they have in common is stronger than what makes them unique. They embody who we are and what we believe. Regardless of the generation we belong to or the size of our paycheck, regardless of our race, gender or orientation, we believe, together, that we are here to improve people’s lives, because every life has potential.

To have a skilled workforce, to compete in a global economy and to curb criminal behavior, we need students to graduate from high school. We see the ripple effects in our community when families have affordable homes and the skills they need to gain living wage jobs. Life is better for all of us when our neighbors live on safe streets and can access healthcare when they need it. Your giving, your advocacy, your volunteerism, magnified by the same generosity of your neighbors, makes a meaningful difference in people’s lives. he needs in our community have increased dramatically at a time when fundraising among nonprofits has decreased due to the economy. As Tocqueville Society members, we believed we were in the best position to help turn that tide. And we did! “I’m happy to report that the 2012 Tocqueville Society campaign raised just over $1 million – a four percent increase over 2011 and a return to the pre-recession level of giving among Tocqueville Society members. Joining Affinity Groups

Affinity groups are collaborations of donors with shared interests who are committed to significantly improving the quality of life in our region through focused philanthropic Giving, Advocacy and Volunteerism. Members have opportunities to create long-lasting change and enhance their own development as individuals and as community leaders. We now have two affinity groups - Women’s Leadership Council, founded in 2012, and Highlands Circle, our group for young leaders age 21-40 which became an affinity group in 2011. Sheron Craig is on the executive committee of Women’s Leadership Council and Travis Boyer is a Highlands Circle member.

Many Leadership Givers have responded they would prefer to receive e-mails or access our Web site for United Way information. In response, we continue to develop ways to reach out to Leadership Givers in budget and environmentally friendly ways, like video messages and e-newsletters, in addition to traditional methods such as mailings. As a result, we’ve reduced the number of printed publications we order by several thousand copies, and we’ve seen a savings in our printing budget each year. The Spirit of North Carolina Awards for Campaign Excellence is sponsored annually by United Way of North Carolina. The awards program provides statewide recognition for outstanding commitment and support to communities through local United Way involvement. The competitive awards are presented to honor companies and employees who demonstrate excellence in their United Way campaigns. Award winners are judged on 10 Standards of Excellence, which include:

The City of Asheville The City of Asheville shares a natural partnership with United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County, with both organizations working alongside many partners to make the community stronger. City of Asheville Eaton Corporation Eaton Corporation directs its philanthropic efforts toward making a difference in the quality of life in the communities where they operate. A significant portion of Eaton Corporation’s charitable contributions are directed to United Way, matching the generous support of its employees. Eaton employees also embody the spirit of volunteerism. They support many nonprofits in the community, including participation in Day of Caring, a community-wide day of volunteerism organized by Hands On Asheville-Buncombe, the

In addition, nine employees serve on United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County’s board and committees. “This award recognizes outstanding companies whose dedication to the community is evident from the president throughout the company,” said Tina Jepson, resource development manager with United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County. “Eaton Corporation set up 25 campaign rallies for management and employees, and the results were nothing short of outstanding.” Highlights of the Eaton Corporation campaign include: • Employee donations increased 20 percent from 2011, resulting in 182 new donors. • One in eight donors are Leadership Givers at the $1,000+ level. • The company raised $44,761 in special events donations and through the annual Eaton Golf Tournament.

Middle School Success 2012 Accomplishments

In 2012, Middle School Success served 131 people from 45 organizations through its Professional Development Series for youth development professionals. Eight workshops and two Lunch & Learn events covered topics such as Services for At-Risk Youth and Working with Teen Girls. In partnership with Hands On Asheville-Buncombe and YMCA of Western North Carolina, MSS launched a community school initiative at Enka Middle School. Our United r me Way was Sumovery c one of 10 Dis United Ways in the country to receive a United Way Worldwide/Ready by 21 Middle Grades Success and Transitions grant in the amount of $50,000. This grant will enhance our community school project at Enka Middle, community awareness efforts, summer program expansion and our early warning and transitions work with Asheville City and Buncombe County Schools.

In October, United Wayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Highlands Circle was fortunate to have the opportunity to sit down with Neal Hanks, president of Beverly-Hanks & Associates Realtors, through the Conversations with Community Leaders program. Neal is a very active member of the United Way family, serving as a current member of the Board of Directors, past campaign cabinet chair and member of the Tocqueville Society. During the program, Highlands Circle members received an inside look into the current state of the housing market and economy in Western North Carolina. Neal shared advice on what it takes to be a leader in the community and how, as young professionals, Highlands Circle members can best make a difference. The evening was fun, informative and a great success, thanks to Neal and all of the Highlands Circle members in attendance.

Within the workplace divisions of United Way’s annual giving campaign, companies that regularly compete for market share also find themselves competing for bragging rights. From the Legal Division, in which firms compete for the prestigious Challenge Cup, to the Financial Services Division, where banks and accounting offices often invoke each others’ names to raise a few more dollars or gain a few more participation points, the spirit of competition has taken several companies to the top of the leaderboard. In the Healthcare Division, Mountain Area Health Education Center is a leader in employee giving. Nipping at its heels is Sisters of Mercy, which has employed the spirit of friendly rivalry more than once over the years to gain ground on its competition.
