Day of Caring
So far we’ve held five opportunities for volunteer coordinators in 2013: • Hands On Database Trainings • 3 Lunch and Learns: • developing volunteer position descriptions • conducting volunteer interviews and • creating volunteer handbooks • Workshop: volunteer recruitment strategy and social media
In 2013, nearly 900 volunteers from 60 local businesses contributed more than 3,100 hours of volunteer time to complete 64 projects in support of 56 local nonprofits, schools, and public entities. Although it’s impossible to quantify the true value of this service event to the community, the estimated savings to participating organizations is valued at $69,500.
59 local volunteer coordinators attended and: • 100 percent agreed/highly agreed they gained new knowledge or skills • 91 percent felt they gained high/above average knowledge
It is so rewarding (PLUS FUN!) to share a day of caring project with my staff and my volunteers. Last year we hauled what seems like tons of mulch and loved every minute of it.

When I moved here to Asheville over 3 years ago, I immediately began volunteering through Hands-On Asheville. I became familiar with the community this way, learned more about my local United Way and even ended up as “Volunteer of the Year” for one of the organizations that I volunteered with!
When we ask how people have heard about us - both volunteers and book donors - we are regularly told that they found us through the Hands On website. Our volunteers say it’s easy to navigate, and they like the calendar feature. We have been grateful for the continued support and success of our stock-up projects. The project has helped us to be more efficient and it has also helped us to reach out to a larger community with our mission.
The email newletters are what keep me focused on my responsibility to my community. The newsletter is very well done, reader-friendly, and helpful. I like the format of the calendar (the past days in grey, the current and future days in white, as well as being able to look ahead a month or two). HOA provides a way to contact and express interest in most every type of volunteer/non-profit that a person might be looking for.
This is a wonderful way for us to promote needs for volunteers at all of our sites. I love the calendar and the newsletter- great organization, very well done. I need to utilize the service more!
