2016 LEADERS IN GIVING
RECOGNIZING OUR DONORS
To be recognized as a leadership giver, a donor must direct his or her gift to United Way’s Community Investment Fund or one of our current funded partners. We go to great lengths to make sure each and every member of the Tocqueville Society, Peaks Society, Women’s Leadership Council and Highlands Circle, as well as all Diamond Donors and companies are recognized in our annual Leaders In Giving book. Some donations, however, aren’t received in time to make it into the book. To make sure we show our appreciation to everyone, donors whose gifts are received after March 31 will be listed in next year’s recognition book. * Indicates deceased throughout this book. If you find any mistakes, or have updates as to how your name should be listed, contact Elizabeth Allen, Leadership Giving Manager at 239-1048.
LEADERSHIP GIVING & AFFINITY GROUP UNDERWRITERS
We are so grateful for the support of the following businesses for their financial support of our Leadership Giving and Affinity Groups. With their help we are able to hold events that allow us to engage and inform our existing donors as well as develop relationships with potential donors.

that help students, families and our whole community succeed. Asheville City Schools, Buncombe County Schools and local health and human service providers are all critical partners, and directors, of this new focus. As I write this, some exciting developments are underway within three pilot sites – Enka, Erwin and Asheville Middle Schools:

CHAIR - 2016 BOARD OF DIRECTORS
This will be my second year serving as Board Chair of United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County. I am excited about what we do and the impact we are having on the lives of those who live and work here. I hope you will review this book in its entirety. Among the names of your fellow Leadership Givers, you will find stories about how your donations and your time continue to strengthen our community. SEEING THINGS IN A NEW LIGHT I have been a leadership giver since 1986 and I’ve always been proud of how our United Way creates real opportunities for our neighbors to become better educated, financially stable and healthy. When I talk to people about what United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County is doing TODAY - especially our Middle School Success initiative - people are impressed. They realize they’ve been imagining United Way as if it were on an old black and white television, when there is actually a full color, hi-def version right here in Asheville. AS I WRITE THIS… Our Middle School Success initiative is actively building partnerships and systems
A Resource Coordinator, placed at each middle school, ensures that the right resources and partnerships are developed for the unique needs of the students and families in that community. We are excited that our newest team member, Kyle Garrett, has served for a full school year at Enka Middle in this capacity. We will have two new staff members placed at Erwin and Asheville Middle for the start of school this August.
•
Resource Coordinators partner with teachers to monitor and encourage each student; catching them at lifechanging tipping points and connecting them to caring adults and community resources. They also work with local service providers to develop partnerships that serve students, families and the community. A great example of this work will come in the new school year. Coordinators will organize “Homework Diners”, a once a week event, at each of the three schools. A meal will be prepared by a great local culinary job training program; providing their participants with valuable work experience and giving local families a fantastic, healthy meal.
After sharing a meal, students receive homework help from paid, licensed teachers. At the same time younger children will be cared for by local youth service providers, and parents can take advantage of free classes we’ll arrange with local service providers on a range of topics like budgeting, home repair and health care and wellness. There is a lot more to be excited about as this work unfolds, but I hope you see that we are heading in some great new directions. WILL YOU HELP US TELL OTHERS? You are all generous donors. Many of you are also supportive volunteers and advocates. Eventually, with your help, we will be able to develop successful students and communities in all eight districts. I thank you for saying YES to our invitation to improve lives right here at home. I have a personal request. We need YOU to help extend this invitation to others. Be it your family, your friends, co-workers, Facebook or Twitter following, we hope you will help us spread the word and ask others to join us. It’s easy: just share your story about why you give, why you volunteer and why you choose United Way, and then connect them to us. Our staff will take care of the rest. Thank you again for your continued generosity. Thank you for Living United!
“Where would our community be without United Way? Keith and I appreciate how United Way brings together donors and volunteers so that we can connect and respond to the needs in our community. “

2015 ALEXIS DE TOCQUEVILLE CHAIRS
“I must say that I have seen Americans make a great deal of real sacrifices to the public welfare; and have noticed a hundred instances in which they hardly ever failed to lend a faithful support to one another.” Alexis de Tocqueville Democracy in America - 1835
United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County’s Alexis de Tocqueville Society was created in 1990 to recognize
individuals and couples who invest $10,000 or more each year. Since that time, members of The Tocqueville Society have generously given more than $14 million to change the lives of their neighbors in need.

ABOUT THE TOCQUEVILLE COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
In 1973, United Way of America began honoring an individual or family who had demonstrated extraordinary commitment, leadership and service and made a broad impact on their community and/or the nation. Previous winners of the national award include: Ambassador Walter Annenberg, Presidents Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter, Senator and Mrs. John Glenn, and Bob Hope. Local United Ways followed and soon began recognizing one of their own. Our United Way began the tradition in 2002, with Buddy and Marilyn Patton and Barbara Blomberg being honored as the first winners of our Tocqueville Society Community Service Award. This award is given to a Tocqueville Society member who has demonstrated: • Outstanding contributions to the nonprofit health and human services of our community.
Barbra and Keith Love Tocqueville Community Service Award
• Commitment to the work of United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County with gifts of time and money. • Sustained contributions over a period of years to a variety of nonprofits.
Barbra and Keith’s leadership and financial support has transformed our community, having a long lasting and far reaching impact. We are grateful for their work and friendship. Thank you!

POWERFUL NEXT STEPS THAT WILL STRENGTHEN FAMILIES AND COMMUNITY In partnership with the Asheville Buncombe Middle Grades Network (Asheville City and Buncombe County schools, nonprofits and community) we are creating hubs of support for middle school students, their families and neighbors. IMAGINE OUR MIDDLE SCHOOLS... • had a way to quickly identify when students were getting off track and had access to all the mentors/ tutors kids needed; • and once a week, families could come to the school for a “Homework Diner” where they would share a great meal prepared by a local culinary training program and their kids could get homework help from a teacher being paid for their extra work; • and anyone in the community could come to the school to take classes on budgeting, healthy eating, parenting strategies or even get their GED; • and businesses, faith communities and neighborhood groups created teams to support these efforts. That’s just some of what we are building!
End of School Block Parties fed more than 700 people and connected families to great resources for the summer months.
NEXT STEPS... We placed our first, full-time, Resource Coordinator at Enka Middle School this past year and in 2016 coordinators will be placed at Erwin and Asheville Middle Schools as well. Among the key responsibilities of these coordinators: • helping teachers use a new dashboard that will help spot when kids are losing ground in attendance, behavior or course studies, and • developing and organizing the community partnerships that will support the students, families and community. Also, in the 2016-17 school year - we will roll out “Homework Diners”. If you’d like to learn more about this powerful strategy - check out a story from NBC’s Nightly News: unitedwayabc.org/homework-diners
Newly implemented early morning coffees at Erwin Middle provide a chance for parents to drop in and meet the principal and school staff.
Classes, like this one on computer literacy, will be available to anyone in the community at each school.
“I love people who love United Way. The Peaks Society is a fantastic collection
of community leaders who understand how much we can achieve as a community when we pool our resources and our will. The members of the Peaks Development Committee are committed to engaging even more people in this effort, and I feel lucky to be one of them.”

Fifty eight years. That’s how many collective years of giving these two Wells Fargo co-workers, Kim and Delise, have under their United Way “belts”. They both started giving at their workplaces and, over the years, have become more deeply involved as leadership givers, volunteers and advocates. Today, they help lead engagement opportunities for their fellow co-workers; “Wells Fargo is a big supporter of philanthropy and volunteerism nationwide. It is a part of our vision and values, to give back in every community where we do business. So it’s been fulfilling and rewarding for us personally to be able to provide meaningful opportunities for our fellow team members like the ones we’ve done with Hands On. We tailor our activities to our team’s interests because we get to make those choices locally.” Review photos of a recent Wells Fargo team volunteer experience: bit.ly/1Y5Yk6p

Our 2-1-1 referral specialist listened to Marta and privately wished she had called sooner. There were resources that might have helped her keep from losing everything. What there wasn’t, were resources to pay for her gas. But what our referral specialist could do for Marta now, was brainstorm solutions with her, and that’s what they did. When we followed up, Marta told our specialist that a friend helped with the gas and that she got the job – one that would pay enough to help her rebuild what she had lost. “She thanked me for

STRENGTH
We believe it is important that our community has a strong safety net that supports the education, financial stability and health of everyone in our community, from infants to elders. That’s why our competitive grants prioritize funding for programs that: • Increase learning through early childcare centers • Help youth strengthen their social and basic life skills • Improve adult literacy, language and vocational skills • Remove barriers to safe, affordable housing • Prevent violence and abuse

We believe our community is a better place when children are strong, healthy and successful. We all benefit when they graduate from high school, college and career ready. And that to have the best shot at a good life, it’s important that a student’s family and community are strong and healthy too. United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County is working with the Asheville Buncombe Middle Grades Network, a partnership between Asheville City Schools, Buncombe County Schools, nonprofit organizations and institutions of higher education. This partnership is building collaborative hubs of resources, at first within three pilot schools - Enka, Erwin and Asheville Middle, and eventually across Buncombe County. These resources serve students, families and community members living within each district. Here’s the latest on our three Middle School Success strategies:
1. EARLY WARNING AND RESPONSE SYSTEM We are in the testing phase of a new dashboard system that helps teachers, coaches, mentors and tutors see how each student is performing around attendance, behavior and course grades. The dashboard uses a simple Red/ Yellow/Green alert so we can see which students are doing well and which students are off course. But it isn’t enough to just know if a student is falling behind; we have to connect students AND their families to services and tools to help ensure they succeed.
2. RESOURCE COORDINATORS

PLE. IMPROVE LIVES.
HEN COMMUNITY.
We believe in the transformative power of volunteerism. It is an experience that can change how we view and interact with the world around us and gives each of us the chance to be a “force for good”. This is why we promote volunteerism, create easier ways to channel volunteers to area nonprofits and share continuing education and best practices among volunteer managers. An important area of growth for us? Finding new ways to engage workplace volunteers through corporate engagement. We find it is a win-win - for the community, workplace relationships and a way for our corporate partners to have the support they need to fulfil their own civic responsibilities.
We believe everyone deserves to have someone really listen to their story and work hard to help them succeed. This is why our 2-1-1 information and referral specialists are trained to listen to the spoken and unspoken parts of a caller’s story. By actively listening to these cues, we ensure each of 50,000+ calls we handle annually get high-quality information for their unique situation. NC 2-1-1 has two call centers - one in Durham and one here at United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County. As a part of a statewide restructuring process, the Asheville call center took on a larger footprint in the western North Carolina region. We now serve 16 counties and will eventually cover 23. For our staff, this means we not only answer calls from a wider geographic area, we are also actively identifying and building regional partnerships that will better serve our community.
3. WHO GOT YOU THROUGH? We placed the first Resource Coordinator at Enka Middle School in the fall of 2015 and in fall 2016, Erwin and Asheville will get one each as well. Resource Coordinators champion the Early Warning and Response System and organize community resources: financial literacy, health screenings and out of school events that support kids, their families and community.
Middle schoolers with a supportive community are more engaged in class, make better grades, attend school regularly and have a better chance at graduating high school on time. That’s why we are recruiting a second shift of caring adults with the “Who Got You Through?” campaign by sharing the stories of kids, and the adults who are making a difference in their lives.
The Women’s Leadership Council mobilizes women to use their energy, talent and passion advocating for social change. We demonstrate the powerful impact women can make when they pool their individual talents and financial resources. In just two years we have more than 200 members contributing close to $300,000 to United Way. We focus on Middle School Success; championing the cause, sharing the message and supporting middle school students. For me it’s an opportunity to connect with other women who want to be actively involved in creating positive change in people’s lives. We welcome new members…join us today!

2016 WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP COUNCIL CHAIR
I’ve been involved with United Way for the last 12 years, first in Texas and now here in Asheville. My involvement and love of United Way really started out as a thank you for their role in helping to connect my wife to the services she needed when she was a pre-teen living in Oklahoma. She was actually in middle school when she hit a very dark and low point in her life. It was through their United Way that she was directed to the kinds of counseling services she needed, but her parents couldn’t afford. That’s why it’s so exciting for me to serve on the board of directors. Now I get to do more than just write a check. I get to help develop our community strategy - that’s exciting to me.

Our affinity group, made up of young professionals under the age of 40, is passionate about making a difference for our community. We know that by joining others, we can accomplish more. And we have; in the 10 years since our beginning, Highlands Circle has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the work of United Way and helped countless individuals through volunteerism. In fact last year, our members, including 56 new members, raised $138,170 – a $10,000 increase over the previous year. We’re proud to play a tangible role in reducing the impact of poverty – one dollar, member, and volunteer hour at a time.

2016 HIGHLANDS CIRCLE CHAIR
Highlands Circle United Way’s Young Leaders
Working as a volunteer at Enka Middle School has been a truly rewarding experience. I love to see students getting excited about learning something new or difficult. It is so much fun to see the light bulb go on, and to know that as a volunteer you are part of the learning process that helped nudge, and motivate them to get there. I want to thank our United Way for their leadership in our community and for the creation of programs like the Middle School Success volunteer initiative that helps to focus community resources were they are needed the most. Working together, I know we can continue to make an impact in individual lives, and create positive, permanent change in our community.

Through United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County, we give of our resources, raise our voices and lend our muscles to change our community.
Consider another kind of giving: a future gift of a small part of your estate through a bequest in your will. Such an endowment will help assure our future and mark your continued legacy of giving. Together, we can continue improving lives and inspiring hope, both now and in the years to come.

We know the benefits to corporate volunteering— retaining top talent, improved skills, increased employee satisfaction, and a positive public image to name a few—but sometimes it can be challenging to connect with a nonprofit or coordinate a project.
Great Things Happen When We LIVE UNITED! United Way is committed to reducing the impact of poverty on people’s lives and strengthening our community. We do this by focusing on the EDUCATION, INCOME and HEALTH of our community but to be successful we will need everyone to answer our call to GIVE, ADVOCATE AND VOLUNTEER.

@ work week students
Each year, 700+ local middle school students participate in Students @ Work Week, a joint project of the NC Business Council for Education and the NC Department of Public Instruction. The goal: help students connect career interests to their daily school experience. We are one of seven organizations coordinating activities. See the photos:

Who Got You Through?
Connecting kids interests, skills and classroom experience to the real world doesn’t have to be a once a year experience. By volunteering as a tutor or mentor, and making it possible for your co-workers to do the same, you can spark excitement year-round. Learn more: handsonasheville.org/
