UNITED WAY OF ASHEVILLE AND BUNCOMBE COUNTY
RECOGNIZING OUR DONORS
To be recognized as a leadership giver, a donor must direct his or her gift to United Way’s Community Investment Fund or one of our current funded partners. We go to great lengths to make sure each and every member of the Tocqueville Society, Peaks Society, Women’s Leadership Council and Highlands Circle, as well as all Diamond Donors and companies are recognized in our annual Leaders In Giving book. Some donations, however, aren’t received in time to make it into the book. To make sure we show our appreciation to everyone, donors whose gifts are received after March 31 will be listed in next year’s recognition book. * Indicates deceased throughout this book.
LEADERSHIP GIVING & AFFINITY GROUP UNDERWRITERS
We are so grateful for the support of the following businesses for their financial support of our Leadership Giving and Affinity Groups. With their help, we are able to hold events that allow us to engage and inform our existing donors as well as develop relationships with potential donors.

ON THE COVER:
Newly retired AT&T Executive, LaVoy Spooner and Mukunda Pacifici of DixonPacifica Real Estate.
The most powerful way you can impact your community and improve the lives of your neighbors is by giving to United Way’s Community Investment Fund. These dollars are invested in the areas of Education, Income and Health and produce measurable results. In 2012-2013, 74,000 people’s lives were improved right here in Asheville and Buncombe County. As Peaks donors who are at different stages of their careers, both LaVoy and Mukunda come together to make their community a better place by supporting the Community Investment Fund.
“T
hank you for your extraordinarily generous gift to United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County. Your contribution is a powerful demonstration of your commitment to our community. By contributing to United Way’s Community Investment Fund, you join with others across Asheville and Buncombe County to strengthen the building blocks of a good life for everyone - Education, Income and Health. “Working together, people with passion and commitment like you are leading the way to a brighter tomorrow. You’ve shown what it means to LIVE UNITED.”
SUZANNE DEFERIE
2013-2014 BOARD OF DIRECTORS CHAIR
As each year begins, our volunteers attend committee orientations. This year, we asked a question: “With so many great organizations to choose from in our community, why did you choose United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County?” 300 volunteers answered this question and, while there were many great answers, there were some common themes: • Our volunteers believe they can help more people, address more issues and have a greater impact when they work with United Way. • Our volunteers love getting to know other great people who care about the wellness of our
community. They meet people they might never have had a chance to get to know. • And the final reason we heard over and over? “You asked me.” That is a powerful statement. “You asked me.” United Way exists to improve people’s lives in the areas of Education, Income and Health. And we believe that it is through the power of collective action, all of us working together, that we can achieve our goals. It is our job to extend an invitation to every member of our community to join us as Givers, Advocates and Volunteers to improve our community.
As board chair, Tocqueville member and fellow Leadership Giver, I want to thank you for saying yes to our call to action. Whether you’ve been saying yes for the past forty years, or are new to United Way, you are all important members of our family. I have a request. We need YOU, our Givers, Advocates and Volunteers to help extend this invitation to others. Be it your family, your friends, co-workers, Facebook or Twitter following, we hope you will help us spread the word and ask others to join us. We don’t want to ever hear “I didn’t know you needed me. No one asked.”
It’s easy to extend this invitation. Just share your story about why you give. Why you volunteer. Why you believe United Way is a great way to improve our community. Then ask your friends to join you. You can share the “give” page from our web site. Give them our brochure and program materials. You can also ask one of our staff members to meet with just one person, or a whole group. We’re happy to do the asking right there with you. Thank you again for your continued generosity. Thank you for Living United!

YOUR GIFT ALSO MAKES THE WORK OF UNITED WAY POSSIBLE: 2013 was quite a year for 2-1-1. We handled 53,000 calls, are now a part of the NC 2-1-1 system and expanded the service area of our Asheville Call Center. We serve 7 western counties and are excited about our two newest partnerships with Polk and Rutherford counties.
In 2013 we noticed a greater number of repeat volunteers: people are having great volunteer experiences and are coming back for more! Other highlights: 2,700 people gave 22,000 hours of service through volunteer opportunities they found through Hands On. A new partnership with Asheville Radio Group, Paramount KIA of Asheville and the Asheville Tourists greatly improved the impact of our School Supply Drive - a record 738 students started school with a fully stocked backpack!

We received our third national accreditation from the Alliance of Information and Referral Systems (AIRS) which speaks volumes about our quality staff and we are proud that some of our practices were so well received by AIRS that they will become part of their best practices manual shared nationwide.

You believe in the power of COLLECTIVE ACTION. You give to United Way’s COMMUNITY INVESTMENT FUND and, because of your gifts, and those of others in our community, we are all stronger.
ADDITIONALLY We envision a safe community where everyone has the knowledge, resources, access and opportunities to be healthy.

We’ve assembled a city/ county/ community partnership of school and nonprofit professionals to work on big picture issues. There is a lot underway, but one of the most exciting is the development of an “Early Warning and Response System”. Its purpose is to identify middle school students veering off the course to graduation and link them with high-impact programs and interventions to support their path to a successful 9th grade year and on-time high school graduation. We are among a handful of communities leading this charge nationwide.
With the help of our VISTA members, United Way is in its second year partnering with Enka Middle School and YMCA’s 21st Century Program to create a Community School at Enka Middle. Community Schools bring resources and programming to students and families in their own school setting. Already in the 2013-14 school year we’ve seen 97 students participate in activities such as: yoga, creative writing, community service, healthy cooking and more.
GIVE, ADVOCATE AND VOLUNTEER. Three ways
each of us can make a big change in our own lives and effect change in our community. We saw so many great things happen in 2013, around each of these areas, but here are a few highlights.
Donor affinity groups are growing: • HIGHLANDS CIRCLE was founded in 2007 as a
way for young leaders, in their 20’s and 30’s, to combine their giving with opportunities for networking, service and leadership. This great group of people are 141 members strong and raised more than $113,000 in 2013.
• WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP COUNCIL (WLC)
launched in May of 2013 with a focus on our Middle School Success Initiative. Taylor Foss, our chair, is also a member of the national WLC board. With Taylor’s leadership, we’ve seen tremendous growth and are happy to report that we have 164 members!
Our advocacy efforts have grown: • A record 200+ people attended our annual Legislative
Briefing in December. This event, run in conjunction with United Way of NC and the NC Budget and Tax Center, is an effort to inform the community about the state of the NC economy and key budgetary decisions. Our event continues to have the highest participation rates in the state.
•
United Way Board members passed a resolution supporting Medicaid Expansion in North Carolina. Working with the WNC Medicaid Expansion Advocacy Group, we aim to supply quality information and clear up common myths.
Other highlights: • We released a report, “Voices For The Common Good”, which outlined our findings from a series of Community Conversations held since 2010. More than 300 diverse community members participated and our findings were included in a report by United Way Worldwide as well. The report can be found on our web site.
“U
nited Way of Asheville and Buncombe County’s local chapter of The Tocqueville Society was created in 1990 to recognize individuals and couples who invest $10,000 or more each year. Since that time, members of The Tocqueville Society have generously given nearly $12 million to change the lives of their neighbors in need. For 2013, our Tocqueville donors surpassed the $1M mark, representing 20% of the total dollars raised in the community campaign.
THE TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY “I must say that I have seen Americans make a great deal
of real sacrifices to the public welfare; and have noticed a hundred instances in which they hardly ever failed to lend a faithful support to one another.” Alexis de Tocqueville

We have been Tocqueville members for 10 years and are always impressed with how intelligently and fairly United Way distributes funds to organizations that serve our community. - Phyllis and Wayne Lang

We are grateful for the leadership provided by George and Barbara Groome, our 2013 Tocqueville Chairs. With their guidance, a matching fund was established for the 2013 campaign to increase Tocqueville giving and expand our membership. Their plan worked! As a result, more than $66,750 new Tocqueville dollars were raised. Thank you to the people who funded this matching grant: Barbara and George Groome, Pam and Jim Turner, and Robert Pew and Susan Taylor.
Marilyn Patton, the first lady of philanthropy to so many in our community, passed on April 9. If you never had the opportunity to meet Marilyn, the best way we can describe her is that she was a funny, feisty, generous, approachable and knowledgeable woman. Most of all, she was kind and we will miss her. Marilyn’s impact on our community, coupled with that of her whole family; her father, Harry Blomberg and sister, Barbara Blomberg, her late husband Buddy Patton and their children Pat, Harry and Lynn is immense. The Patton/Blomberg family represents what is best in philanthropy. Read more about the the Blomberg/Patton families on our web site: unitedwayabc.org/marilynpatton Our hearts are with the whole family as they celebrate her life and legacy. Marilyn truly was one of a kind!

ABOUT THE TOCQUEVILLE COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD In 1973, United Way of America began honoring an individual or family who had demonstrated extraordinary commitment, leadership and service and made a broad impact on their community and/or the nation. Previous winners of the national award include: Ambassador Walter Annenberg, Presidents Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter, Senator and Mrs. John Glenn, and Bob Hope. Local United Ways followed and soon began recognizing one of their own. Our United Way began the tradition in 2002, with Buddy and Marilyn Patton and Barbara Blomberg being honored as the first winners of our Tocqueville Society Community Service Award. This award is given to a Tocqueville Society member who has demonstrated the following:
Marla and Joel Adams and Dot Hamill Tocqueville Community Service Award Recipients
On December 12, 2013, George and Barbara Groome hosted the Annual Tocqueville dinner at which United Way awarded the Tocqueville Community Service Award to Dot Hamill and Joel and Marla Adams. Their leadership and financial support has transformed our community, having a long lasting and far reaching impact. We are grateful for their work and friendship. Thank you!

volunteering builds team spirit
We have seen first hand how teams of all kinds, be they work or family related, benefit from working together on a volunteer project. Hands On Asheville-Buncombe, United Way’s volunteer center, is ready to connect your team to meaningful and impactful volunteer experiences:
• Contact us to create a project for your company. We can develop partial and full day
experiences that incorporate education and volunteerism around an issue. An example of this in action: one group wanted to explore hunger issues and we assembled 3 volunteer sessions that took place over several months. Each volunteer date began with an orientation to the issues of hunger and how each nonprofit addresses the problem.
• No time for your team to go “into the field”? Then consider one of our “portable projects”. These projects can be accomplished during a retreat or on a lunch break. Some options include creating flash cards for students and toys for shelter dogs.
• We also provide links to projects that can be done by the whole family. Just search for youth and family friendly projects and maybe your next family reunion can be even more vibrant!

“We are proud of the accomplishments made by our Women’s Leadership Council during this, our first year. Membership has grown from 45 to 164 women and more than 217 hours of volunteer time was contributed by WLC members alone.
“We are a powerful national network of caring women – more than 50,000 members strong. Our WLC has aligned with our community’s goal to create success-ready 9th graders, supporting United Way’s Middle School Success initiative. We hope you will join us!”

It is a pleasure to work on the Women’s Leadership Council where many intelligent women leaders in our community influence the success of the middle school program through United Way. This program allows our teens and tweens to increase the likelihood of high school graduation and further lifelong success. I am proud to be a part of a group that is helping to make our children’s futures brighter. - Althea Aycock, Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP I support United Way because I know that by giving I am supporting so many worthy non-profit organizations in our community. I have three young children and so I particularly appreciate the work they do to improve education in our area, especially middle schools. Ultimately I want to give back to this community because I feel fortunate to be a part of it. - Harli Palme, Parsec Financial

WLC members take a hands on approach to their giving. In addtion to their financial generosity, WLC members have volunteered during garden workdays, holiday book drives and gift wrapping parties, educational forums and several members volunteered to be a part of “Girls In Charge” - an eight week self esteem mentorship project with middle school girls. They didn’t have any fun AT ALL!
“Together, Highlands Circle’s 141 members raised $113,000 for United Way’s
Community Investment Fund, contributed 93 service hours and participated in 15 networking, volunteer and leadership development events throughout 2013. Thank you, Highlands Circle, for your active involvement in this community! Are you interested in getting to know other young leaders? Do you want to understand the issues facing our neighbors in need and be part of the solution to improve lives in Buncombe County? Join us at one of our upcoming networking socials and learn how you can make a difference!”

Back when I worked in nonprofits, I developed an appreciation for the help that some people need and why things just don't get better all by themselves. It takes a whole community to move the needle on big issues like education, and I work with United Way to make sure I am a part of that process. I give my time to the Highland Circle Steering Committee and my treasure to the Community Investment Fund because I know that those are the best ways for me to help my neighbors. - Andy Gmitter, Galaxy Digital Like many, I knew of United Way, but I did not have an in-depth understanding of the mission of the organization. I decided to focus more time, energy and resources on United Way and Highlands Circle, to build my understanding of the organization’s initiatives, make connections with others with similar philanthropic interests and let’s face it, to have some fun along the way. I have always been a big believer that working together for a common goal is how we become greater as individuals and as a community… so here’s to LIVING UNITED! - Ashley van Twisk Allen Bryson, Johnson Price Sprinkle

Highlands Circle members do not rest. These are some active people - connecting at our regular networking socials, volunteer events and leadership development opportunities. This year, members were particularly energized by a presentation on the issues surrounding the health care industry by Dr. Paulus of Mission Health. It’s a complicated issue and Dr. Paulus did a fantastic job addressing this national issue from a local perspective.

Through United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County, we give of our resources, raise our voices and lend our muscles to change our community.
Consider another kind of giving: a future gift of a small part of your estate through a bequest in your will. Such an endowment will help assure our future and mark your continued legacy of giving. Together, we can continue improving lives and inspiring hope, both now and in the years to come.

Asheville City employees had a blast at their annual picnic while helping raise funds for United Way.
We come from different places. We come to different conclusions. But underneath it all, we share a passion for improving the human condition. When we LIVE UNITED, we create real, lasting change in the building blocks of a good life: the education, income and health of our communities, our families, even the person next to us.
